Researchers Under the Scope
Inside a Drug Trial for a Rare Childhood Disease: Drs. Sarah Tehseen & Katie Felton

Researchers Under the Scope

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2026 29:34

Most childhoods don't involve sitting at the hospital for an infusion of medication, transfusions on weekends, or worrying that classmates will comment on the colour of your skin. For one Saskatoon teen with an ultra-rare blood disease, that's everyday life. She was diagnosed with a form of anemia so uncommon only a handful of cases have been identified globally.  In this episode, Sarah Tehseen (MD) & Katie Felton (MD) share how they're working to change her "normal" by opening a phase 3 pharmaceutical trial and fighting for a better quality of life.   We hear how Tehseen and Felton each got into medicine, why they love working with kids, and what it's like to be there for families on "one of the worst days of their life."  "It's getting them through the next day, week, month and years ahead," said Felton. "So even though, yeah, I deal with blood disorders and cancer, which are really can be difficult conversations with families, we still have fun."   They pull back the curtain on the effort it took to bring a this drug trial for an ultra-rare form of anemia to Jim Pattison Children's Hospital. From having to respond to 40 or 50 e-mails a day, to forfeiting vacation time as their patient goes through blood draws and clinic visits, it's a heavy lift. "Definitely, it requires some changing and plans for us at times, to be able to accommodate and facilitate that," said Tehseen.  "Having two physicians doing it together, rather than being doing it alone, is has, has been super helpful."   They discuss the hidden financial realities of rare drugs, and the importance of blood and stem cell donation. Both physicians say they find true joy in detective work, and in finding the right treatments for their patients. And even simple things like learning a child's favourite video game or doing bunny-hop races down the hall can help kids coping with rare diseases feel a little less alone. Tehseen says it's worth learning more. "If she's your classmate, if she's your student, know what it is, how it's affecting her. Because the more you know, the better you're able to show up in the life of that person," she said.     OneMatch Bone Marrow Registry - https://www.blood.ca/en/hospital-donors-and-volunteers/become-donor/one-match Canadian Blood Services - https://www.blood.ca/en

This is not a show I ever planned to do. In all my years of podcasting, I've never felt compelled to look back and take stock of where we've been. But twenty twenty-four and twenty twenty-five have been different. These years have been brutal for our community, and I couldn't stay silent any longer. We lost giants. Real giants. Men who shaped the very foundation of modern Sasquatch research and carried the torch forward into the twenty-first century. Tonight, I'm setting aside whatever differences might have existed to honor what they gave us and acknowledge that we've lost some truly important figures.Doctor Jeff Meldrum passed away in September of twenty twenty-five after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was sixty-seven years old. The full professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University gave our community something precious: legitimacy. With his collection of over three hundred footprint casts and his landmark book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, he picked up where Grover Krantz left off and continued the tradition of academic rigor in a field that desperately needed it.I had the privilege of sitting down with Jeff just a few weeks before he passed, and that conversation will stay with me forever.Henry Franzoni died on August twenty-second, twenty twenty-four, also at sixty-seven. If Meldrum brought scientific credibility to Bigfoot research, Henry brought the internet. Back in nineteen ninety-three, he created the first Bigfoot website and the first online discussion group, the Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference. From that foundation grew pretty much every Bigfoot organization and website you see today. I interviewed Henry about a year before he passed, and afterward he sent me a signed copy of his book, Failing in a Cooler Way: Why I Never Found Bigfoot. That title tells you everything you need to know about who Henry was as a person.Steven Streufert, owner of Bigfoot Books in Willow Creek, California, is also gone now. Steven was an institution, a historian and scholar who knew the stories, the players, and the timeline of how this phenomenon evolved from local legend to international sensation. He was a key member of the Bluff Creek Project, the team that rediscovered the exact location where Patterson and Gimlin filmed their famous footage in nineteen sixty-seven. Steven and I had our public disagreements in his Facebook group, but that's what a community of researchers should look like. We can all have our opinions and still show mutual respect for one another.Beyond the deaths, we lost places too. The Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, California, closed its doors after twenty years. And in December of twenty twenty-four, two men from Portland died from exposure in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest while searching for Sasquatch on Christmas Eve.I explore the legacies of these three researchers, discuss the current state of Sasquatch research, examine the Patterson-Gimlin film at fifty-seven years, address what the skeptics say, talk about the nearly one thousand witnesses I've interviewed over almost forty years, and reflect on the lessons we can learn from the men we lost. I also share a word about safety for anyone venturing into the wilderness in pursuit of this mystery. The disagreements don't matter. The bickering doesn't matter. What matters is the work. What matters is the pursuit. These men spent their lives investigating something that most of society considers a joke, and they did it because they believed the truth was worth pursuing. Their torches have been passed. We'll do our best to carry them forward.Leave Brian A Voicemail Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

In this conversation, Andy Felton invites us to see our bodies as organic gardens—living ecosystems that flourish or falter based on what we plant in them. He makes a clear, compassionate case that our modern, convenience-first food culture has left many of us undernourished and overwhelmed, not because we lack willpower but because we've been trained to outsource the most human act we do: cooking. With a steady, nonjudgmental tone, Andy explains how ultra-processed foods and chemical shortcuts confuse our biology, while simple, authentic ingredients restore it. He shares the liberating idea that you don't have to be perfect: start where you are, aim for an 80/20 approach, and remember that every bite is information your cells can use to move you toward strength, clarity, and calm. Then he turns our gaze backward to move forward—toward traditions like sprouting, fermenting, milling, and making real bread; toward seasonal produce and meeting the growers who nurture it; toward meals that are cooked with hands and shared with people. Without preaching, Andy weaves in a vision of health as “strength for life,” not an end in itself: energy to play with your kids, to serve your community, to live your values. If you've felt unprepared to navigate a broken food culture, this episode offers a hopeful path home—one skillet, one simple recipe, one small habit at a time. On 28th August 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, a young Franciscan friar named Thomas Felton was hanged near Brentford, Middlesex. Felton's “crime”? His Catholic faith, and his refusal to acknowledge Elizabeth I as head of the Church. The son of Blessed John Felton (executed in 1570 for posting the papal bull of Elizabeth's excommunication), young Thomas endured brutal imprisonment and torture — confined in the Little Ease, flogged, and even hanged by his hands until they bled. Yet he refused to betray his faith or the priests who sheltered English Catholics. He was just 21 years old when he went to the gallows — turning down a pardon rather than compromise his beliefs. In this podcast, I, Claire Ridgway, historian and author, share the tragic yet inspiring story of Thomas Felton, and why his courage deserves to be remembered. After an intensive two week deep dive reassessing the work of producer Felton Jarvis, Justin comes up for air only to find one Gurdip Ladhar waiting patiently at the surface.  Gurdip eases his way into the water, bringing along a favorite comfort Camden, 1971's "I Got Lucky," a collection of songs mostly comprised of movie material previously only available on Extended Plays (and one excellent non-movie single B-side!)   But we're not quite done with Felton yet - the last two episodes provoked some great responses long and short from Elvis fans of all kinds, and we tackle some of the most pointed questions and queries to result from the effort. Gurdip also gives his thoughts on recent Elvis news. For Song of the Week, Gurdip picks up right where he left off, picking the upbeat "I Love Only One Girl" from the feature film "Double Trouble," while Justin goes all-in on another one of Elvis's singularly iconic 1950s rock-and-blues recordings that's wildly out of season: "Santa Claus is Back in Town."

Discover how staying grounded—through the highs and lows—can lead to a life that's strong, steady, and full of purpose. (06/15/2025)

After setting the stage by understanding producer Felton Jarvis's career leading up to his early collaborations with Elvis, we continue to investigate and interrogate the fan belief that he was singularly to blame for the "syrupy" overdubs that diminished the "pure" unfinished tracks. Helped along by a 1980 interview done between Felton and Jerry Flowers of RCA in which the producer talks about his career retrospectively, Justin and Bec trace Felton's journey as Elvis hires and hand-picks him to be his exclusive producer, taking Felton away from RCA and other artists so that Elvis can, as a largely autonomous artist whose only studio commitments during this decade are to send periodic deliverables to RCA, work at his own pace and create the kind of recordings that he truly wants. But was Felton truly to blame for the overindulgent strings and horns that were added to Elvis's music, or is there someone else that we've collectively overlooked? And has the narrative been all wrong and the way we even talk about "overdubs" been clouded by a widespread "rockist" misunderstanding of both Elvis and Felton, their respective jobs and tastes, and misunderstood expectations of the kind of music both fans & critics thought Elvis "should" be making?  The duo examine Elvis's live performances in relation to his studio work, touch on a few more non-Elvis records produced by Felton, and even revisit the 1981 "Guitar Man" project Felton spearheaded before his early death to see if it provides clearer insight into the producer's preferences and tastes. For Song of the Week, Bec makes a promise that "It Won't Be Long," covering the recording cut from "Double Trouble," while Justin goes prospecting because he's pretty sure "There's Gold in the Mountains" still to be dug up from "Kissin' Cousins." Some of the resources consulted for this and the last episode included, even if not quoted or mentioned in the final episode: Felton Jarvis's 1980 Interview with Jerry Flowers of RCA William Bozeman: "Felton Jarvis: The Man Behind the Music" from Elvis Express Magazine Peter Guralnick: Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley Roben Jones: Memphis Boys: The Story of American Studios Rick Hall: The Man from Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame Norbert Putnam: Musical Memories, Volume 1 Ernst Jorgensen: Elvis Presley - A Life in Music Ernst Jorgensen & Peter Guralnick: "Elvis Day By Day" and "The Complete Masters" Ernst Jorgensen, Johnny Mikkelsen & Erik Rasmussen: Reconsider Baby: The Definitive Elvis Sessionography Elvis Music FAQ by Mike Eder Alanna Nash: "Revelations from the Memphis Mafia" & "The Colonel" Luther Moore: "Felton Jarvis Re-Appraised" from Elvis: The Man & His Music magazine Brian F. Intrigued by the premise presented by the recent Sony box sets like "Sunset Boulevard" describing Elvis's undubbed recordings as "pure," Justin decided to investigate the story behind the man who has borne most of the heavy criticism aimed at the production on Elvis's music, Felton Jarvis, who was Elvis's main producer from 1966-1977. While we've previously touched on Felton's work as a producer in our "Elvis and His Producers/Elvis as a Producer" episode, realizing we may not have given him a fair shake, on this episode Justin and Bec investigate Felton's early work at National Recording Corporation (NRC) in Atlanta, Georgia, his time at ABC-Paramount working with Tommy Roe, Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and.... "Vince Everett"? They trace Felton's move to RCA Victor producing many successful acts and hit records in the field of country music in the mid-1960s and, naturally, his first sessions with Elvis across 1966-1968, chief among which was the How Great Thou Art project, which won Elvis his first-ever Grammy Award. Laced throughout are stories of a warm-hearted, good-natured Georgia boy - who loved Elvis Presley and dreamed so hard to one day produce his hero's music that he manifested it - from collaborators, friends and historians who have tried to relay some of Felton's story, as well as audio from Felton himself in conversation with RCA's Jerry Flowers in 1980, discussing his career in hindsight. Part 2 will even more directly interrogate the idea that Felton was, as so frequently repeated by Elvis fans over nearly 4 decades, singularly to blame for the "syrupy" overdubs that were a hallmark of Elvis's 1970s output, as Justin builds a case to convince Bec that she and everyone else - including sometimes even Justin himself - has been wrong all these years! When questioned about Washington's prior claims that Coogler was developing the film with a role intended for him specifically, the director confirmed them, saying, “there's no fiction out there about that”. In unrelated, but still Marvel news, tickets for The Fantastic Four: First Steps went on sale last week, crashing several major theaters online ticketing services and accompanied by a new trailer that appears to show us our first look at Franklin Richards. On the TV side of things, per Deadline sources, Schitt's Creek actor Emily Hampshire has joined the cast of the upcoming Vision Disney Plus series as E.D.I.T.H., the artificial intelligence that appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home. And finally, a second trailer for Ironheart was released on Monday.Late last week, Superman director and DC Studios co-head, James Gunn took to social media, as he is want to do, to announce and celebrate the completion of the film's final visual effects shot, with which he claimed the film to be 100% done ahead of its July 11 release. In the wake of that announcement Gunn took the opportunity to address fan questions surrounding the film's runtime, which he confirmed to be 2 hours and 9 minutes including credits and post credit scenes, while also kiboshing any speculation that Warner Bros had forced a shorter, mandated runtime, saying there was zero truth to it and that Warner Bros could not have interfered even if they wanted to, as it's a DC Studios film. All of this is compounded by rumors that DC Studios will not be focusing on any of their films at SDCC and Gunn's cagey Entertainment Weekly interview from earlier today where he claimed the DCU's Wonder Woman film is being written as we speak.Time for another good old fashioned trailer park, featuring the highly anticipated follow-up to last year's breakout hit, Wicked: For Good, whose first trailer garnered 113 million views in its first 24 hours – and our first full length trailer for Noah Hawley's upcoming FX series, Alien: Earth, which also announced the series for an August 12 premiereMarvel Animation premiered the first episode of the Disney Plus series Eyes of Wakanda during a panel at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, Monday morning. During the panel we learned from director Todd Harris the show will be “anthology-adjacent” and will consist of four episodes.Mia Goth has joined Ryan Gosling in Star Wars: Starfighter, the feature from director Shawn Levy. Although casting details are scarce at the moment, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that she will be playing a villain. HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series has announced nine actors playing key roles for its first season tackling Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The added cast includes Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, will reprise the role on Broadway.  Felton will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway starting Nov. 11, for a 19-week engagement through March 22, 2026. A VR game based on Marvel's Deadpool franchise is set to launch later this year from Meta Quest with Neil Patrick Harris voicing the Merc with a Mouth. The game will launch sometime later this year.
