Mother of two, Joanna Simpson, was brutally killed by her estranged husband, British Airways pilot Robert Brown, on 31 October 2010. Brown smuggled a claw hammer in to Joanna's home and bludgeoned her to death before burying her body in a pre-dug grave. Despite this, Brown was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter. He would serve just 13 years before becoming eligible for automatic release. Laura's forensic analysis of Joanna's case, together with Joanna's extraordinary mother, Diana Parkes CBE, and best friend, Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE, ignited a grassroots movement that successfully prevented Brown's automatic release. But that was not the end. Brown was eligible for parole again in April 2026. Listen as Diana shares the all-important details of what happened at the Parole Board meeting – you won't believe your ears. In this episode, Laura and Di discuss: The behind the scenes of the parole board process; The emotional impact on Joanna's family and loved ones; The Parole Board hearing – what the professionals recommended and the decision; Further insights into Robert Brown's psychopathology; Lessons for professionals assessing coercive control, stalking and domestic abuse; The continuing work of the Joanna Simpson Foundation, and; Joanna's enduring legacy and why the fight for justice continues. Phil and Emily are joined by journalist and author Josephine Riesman to continue their Richard Kelly Reichardt mini-series with the magnificent disaster that is Southland Tales (2006). And there is no better guest for it: Josie wrote the definitive deep-dive on this movie and once spent three hours walking Venice Beach interviewing Richard Kelly himself.Set in an alternate 2008 where nuclear attacks on Texas have tipped America into a surveillance-state apocalypse, Southland Tales unleashes Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake, and a cast of SNL alumni across a sprawling, end-of-days Los Angeles on the Fourth of July. It premiered at Cannes as an unfinished cut on DVD, got booed into oblivion, made a legendary $374,000 against a $17 million budget, and then quietly became the cult object that fans swear is more true than the reality we actually got.The gang digs into why a movie this incoherent is also this irresistible. Emily makes her case that it is what you would get if Philip K. Dick novelized Robert Altman's Nashville, while Phil counters with "Magnolia with a head injury." Josie reveals what Kelly told her about that surreal Justin Timberlake lip-sync to The Killers, the tie-in graphic novels, the Cannes catastrophe, and why he has a reason for every baffling choice, even the ones that never made the final cut. Plus its eerie kinship with Children of Men and The Handmaid's Tale, and the thin line between satire and prophecy.Misunderstood masterpiece or beautiful trainwreck? On America's 250th birthday, it might be the only movie that fits. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Rex Heuermann confessed to strangling eight women. He told his own daughter the victims were not real people to him. He described his motivation as demons. And on recorded phone calls from jail, Asa Ellerup's primary concern was making sure she did not say the wrong thing — not confronting him, not demanding answers, but managing his emotional comfort. For twenty-seven years, Asa's role in this relationship was to keep things smooth. To not push. To not ask the question that makes the room tense. The confession changed the subject matter. It did not change the role. She is still orienting her life around Rex's needs. And the reason she can't see how that reads to the rest of the world goes all the way back to a foundation that was fractured long before she met him.A psychological deep dive into the post-confession behavior of a woman who was built by someone else from the ground up — and the building is still standing.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On February 11, 2014, 63-year-old Cynthia Katherine Cdebaca woke up on her birthday and made a decision that would shock Southern California.By the end of the morning, her son-in-law, Geoward Flores Eustaquio—a military reservist, real estate agent, father, and youth rugby coach—would be dead, shot 15 times inside and outside the Fallbrook home they shared. Prosecutors would later argue that after a dispute over her clothing, Cynthia retrieved a revolver she had purchased just two weeks earlier, fired repeatedly, reloaded twice, and continued shooting as Eustaquio struggled to survive. But it wasn't just the killing that captivated the nation. It was what happened afterward. In this episode of Crimes & Consequences, we examine the case of "Killer Granny" Cynthia Cdebaca—a grandmother who believed she was saving her family, a victim whose life became overshadowed by controversy, and a crime so surreal that it continues to divide true-crime audiences more than a decade later.

They're often the ones who make people feel seen, valued, and cared for long after the transaction is over. A young biotech worker is found dead in his La Jolla apartment, his body carefully laid out on a bed sprinkled with rose petals and framed by a wedding photo. His wife—an ambitious county toxicologist with access to some of the most powerful drugs in the world—tells police it was suicide. Investigators aren't so sure. In this episode, we unpack the chilling “American Beauty” murder of Gregory de Villers and the calculated actions of his wife, Kristin Rossum. We trace their relationship from whirlwind romance to toxic spiral, exploring Kristin's hidden meth addiction, her affair with a supervisor at the medical examiner's office, and the missing fentanyl that would become the centerpiece of a murder trial. You'll hear how forensic toxicology transformed a suspicious overdose into a first-degree murder case, why prosecutors called fentanyl “the perfect poison,” and how a crime scene staged to look cinematic instead exposed a killer who thought she was smarter than the system. We also dive into the courtroom drama, the life sentence, the multimillion-dollar civil judgment, and the lasting questions this case raises about trust, power, and access inside forensic labs. If you're drawn to evidence-driven true crime, complex relationship dynamics, and the intersection of science and deception, this deep dive into the rose petal murder will stay with you long after the episode ends. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong explores the shocking case of Pam Hupp, a Missouri woman whose web of lies, manipulation, and greed would unravel over the course of several years. What began as the tragic murder of Betsy Faria in 2011 appeared to be a seemingly open and shut case, leading investigators to focus on Betsy's husband. But as new evidence emerged, the investigation took a startling turn, revealing a trail of deception that extended far beyond a single crime. As authorities dug deeper, they uncovered suspicious deaths, fraudulent schemes, and a pattern of calculated behavior that pointed back to Hupp. Candice examines how Hupp's relentless pursuit of financial gain, talent for manipulation, and apparent lack of remorse allowed her to evade suspicion for years, and how a determined search for the truth ultimately exposed one of the most disturbing criminal cases in recent memory.Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Killer Psyche ad-free right now. One conversation where Robin Dreeke, retired FBI behavioral analyst, answers every one of them.Nancy Guthrie has been missing for five months. A listener flagged a neighbor with a walk-in gem vault and a Google Maps pin that reportedly overlaps with Nancy's property. The wrong-house theory hasn't been publicly addressed by law enforcement. The masked suspect was inside the house for forty-five minutes with the camera disabled and the back doors propped open. Robin examines what that timeline and that preparation tell us about whether the target was Nancy — or someone else entirely.Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to eight murders. His ex-wife gutted the room where he confessed to killing seven women, redecorated it, and sleeps there. She told cameras it's spiritual. She's visited Rex twelve times since his confession. The Ellerup family reportedly collected seven figures from a documentary. Robin addresses the behavioral meaning of that kind of proximity and the legal gap that made the payout possible.Mackenzie Shirilla and her mother built a coded language to beat prison call monitoring. Prosecutors cracked it. Steve lost his teaching job. Natalie called the Russos evil. Mackenzie worried about her stuff. Robin addresses who is actually running this family's defense and whether Mackenzie can ever reach accountability with these parents in the picture.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Rex Heuermann told his wife he killed eight women. Seven of those conversations reportedly happened in their own basement — the same basement where, according to prosecutors, he described the dismemberments in detail. Asa Ellerup filed for divorce, kept the house, tore out the floors, hung a cross on the wall, arranged stuffed animals on the shelves, and moved in. She sleeps there now. She has reportedly visited Rex in jail around twelve times since the confession. She told Peacock cameras she wants to understand his triggers. The audience wants to understand hers. Why does someone keep returning to a man who confessed to serial murder? Why does the family allegedly collect seven figures from a documentary deal while a victim's son — who was six years old when his mother was killed — files a lawsuit claiming they knew? Why does daughter Victoria say she believes her father most likely did it, while Asa maintains an active relationship with him?Robin Dreeke, retired FBI Special Agent and former chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, takes every question head-on. He breaks down what loyalty after confession actually looks like in behavioral terms, where the boundary between trauma response and complicity starts to blur, and what the DNA evidence recovered from all seven victims tells him about how close someone had to be. Nothing speculative. Every answer grounded in the documented record, driven by the listeners who've been living in this case.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? As the investigation progressed, it was clear that Raven was not a good guy. He admitted to numerous affairs, and various women came forward with stories of abuse and womanizing. What happens in the final moments before death? For generations, people who survived near-death experiences have described the same astonishing phenomenon: a vivid, panoramic replay of their lives—complete with forgotten memories, emotional revelations, and even the feelings of the people they affected along the way. This week, The Box of Oddities explores the science behind "life flashing before your eyes," including a remarkable brain study that captured activity in a dying human brain and raised new questions about consciousness, memory, and what may happen in the seconds after the heart stops beating. Then, Kat dives into the chilling true story of John George Haigh, better known as the Acid Bath Murderer. Charming, intelligent, and utterly ruthless, Haigh believed he had discovered the perfect crime by dissolving his victims in barrels of sulfuric acid. What followed was a shocking spree of fraud, deception, murder, and one of Britain's most notorious criminal investigations. From near-death mysteries to acid-filled barrels, life reviews to serial killers, this episode wanders into some very strange territory—and we wouldn't have it any other way. #BoxOfOddities #NearDeathExperience #LifeFlashingBeforeYourEyes #Consciousness #BrainScience #JohnGeorgeHaigh #AcidBathMurderer #TrueCrimePodcast #WeirdHistory #DarkHistory #MysteriesOfDeath #StrangeButTrue Learn more about your ad choices. For four months, the sixteen-year-old charged with killing Anna Kepner lived with a relative under electronic monitoring. A federal judge approved that arrangement when Hudson was charged as a juvenile. When the case moved to adult court, the same judge took another look at the evidence — and used language in his detention order that signals something beyond ordinary concern about flight risk. The order describes what the evidence suggests about Hudson's character in terms that go far beyond the standard legal framework for pretrial detention. He cited the nature of the charged conduct, the strength of the government's case, the presence of other children in the household, and concerns about what could happen if Hudson remained free. Sealed forensic evidence was filed days before the ruling.Anna Kepner was eighteen. A cheerleader. Headed to the University of Georgia. She was killed on her family's first blended-family cruise. Her body was found hidden under her bed, covered with life vests. Her thirteen-year-old brother was in the same cabin. And months before the cruise, she reportedly told her parents she was scared. The trial is set for September. Jennifer Coffindaffer, contributor to Hidden Killers, explains what the judge saw in the evidence and why the detention order reads the way it does.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? "We actually had a scene that was not a crime scene, but it was the scene that those killers wanted us to find."On the morning of Sunday, 29 May 2011, Beth Stephenson-Victor sat in the pews at Union Baptist Church and looked around for her parents. Beth's father, Bill, never missed church. Her mother, Peggy, would occasionally miss a service with her fibromyalgia flared up, but Bill was always there, rain or shine. Beth had spoken to her mother the day before, and Peggy said they were planning to attend. But by the time the service ended, neither had appeared. Beth tried to call her parents multiple times, and asked her husband to drive over to her parent's condominium on Ridge Edge Court, in the Oakbrook subdivision of Florence, Kentucky. A short time later, her husband called, and his voice told Beth everything she needed to know... There is a murderous crime spree happening right under—and perhaps inside—our noses. Killer microbes armed with weapons are eviscerating, assassinating, and detonating their fellow microbes. And the newest culprit? A protist that morphs into a cannibilastic supergiant when times get tough. Host Flora Lichtman talks with Glen D'Souza and Ben Larson, two detectives who study these micro-murders. They chat about why microbes kill, how they choose their victims, and whether we can harness those weapons for good. Guests: Dr. Glen D'Souza is a microbiologist and assistant professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. Dr. Ben Larson is an assistant professor and cell biologist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
