We are products of the 90's. From the crazy patterns on clothes, screaming Cowabunga from our rooftops, gaming out on the Oregon Trail, and bouncing in our moon shoes. We've begun going back through some of our old favorite movies and tv shows and realize, that as kids, We Were Just Dumb
Blade Runner 2049 is finishing up it's theatrical run and as big Science Fiction dorks Jason and Mike @hormeticeffect wanted to give you their thoughts on the movie. They went back and watched both the original film as well as the new one in order to see just how they stack up to each other.
So one of the greatest World Series in history just finished up and i'm sure some of you are still needing a baseball fix, well we were too! This week Jason and Mike went to the 90's baseball classic "The Sandlot". This movie raises a lot of interesting questions:Is it okay to do a close up on 16yr old Wendy Preffercorn's tush?Is the Sultan of Swat really the baseball fixture that he used to be?Also is there a more iconic use of the word "Forever"?Check out the episode to find these answers and determine whether or not this holds up on the latest episode of We Were Just Dumb!
In honor of the release of Jackie Chan's new film "The Foreigner" Jason and Mike decided to go back to their first introduction to the unique styling of Jackie Chan. In his first film to be developed to appeal to a western audience America got it's first taste of the quirky, goofy, action packed and all around fun movies that Chan had been putting out overseas for years. When we were kids martial arts were king but we had only been exposed to the slow and simple versions of this in movies like The Karate Kid and Roadhouse, so you gotta wonder, would Rumble In The Bronx still have that wow! factor as we are adults? Listen and find out!
So at this point we've all heard (unfortunately) that there is a new Aladdin movie coming out, without the comedy and without the music. Terrible. So this week Jason and Mike decided to go back and watch THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE ALADDIN to see how it held up. In this classic movie, its Robin Williams vs Gilbert Godfried battling it out for the true love of their masters! All jokes aside it was great and sad at the same time to see Robin Williams and all his talent at work. Did our little boy nostalgia bleed all over this movie and cloud our judgement or is it really as good as we remember? Listen to find out!
I'll put it this way, did you ever see the disaster of a film that was M Night Shyamalan's attempt at a blockbuster? You know the one i'm talking about? The one with nothing but dialogue and exposition and lifeless characters and very little action? Well imagine that, but in a cartoon show. This week Jason and Mike went back to some of their earliest memories to watch, what for some reason was a huge cultural hit with boys in the late 80's and early 90's, Thundercats. Once they woke up from falling asleep trying to get through the episodes they decided to voice their opinions, give it a listen:
Is Keith David's voice the greatest voice in cinematic history? This week Jason and Mike went back through a deeper and darker cartoon series from the 90's in Gargoyles. Keith David along with the recurring vocal talents of most of the cast of Star Trek TNG make up the characters in this lesser known show. Is quality voice over work enough to propel this cartoon to a high rating? Give this episode a listen and find out!
To kick off the 2017 Football season Jason and Mike decided to go back to the lesser known classic football flick Wildcats from the year 1986. Featuring the first movie roles of Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes careers it was quite an unexpected treat. The primary star of the film is Goldie Hawn during the peak of her 80's glory and the not so glorious peak of that 80's raccoon mullet hairstyle. How did this movie fare? Give this episode a listen and find out!
In honor of the 3-D Re-release of T-2 in 4k that just dropped in theaters Jason and Mike decided to go back and review the original Terminator from 1984. This movie terrified and amazed at the same time in it's original release and had a hell of an 80's cast including Linda Hamilton, Michael Beihn, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. While people probably remember this as an action movie it re-watches as much more of a Sci Fi Thriller with an emphasis on Thriller. Give this episode a listen to find out who the guys think is hotter, Linda or Arnold, and find out just how this movie holds up! What appealed most to two prepubescent boys in the 90's? Turtles, who ate pizza, kicked ass and said "dude"! Any boy who grew up in the late 80's and early 90's knew about the phenomenon that was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and we were no different. The surprising part? This movie is way darker and more serious than it's cartoon counterpart. This week Jason and Mike went back to their Cowabungan days and watched the first of the 3 original turtles movies. Does it hold up? Find out on this weeks episode!P.S. - Mike had a little too much Tequila
This week Mike gets revenge on Jason for his Valerian water torture and forces Alien: Covenant upon him. While they may differ on their opinion of it's predecessor Prometheus, they both agree there is very little redeeming quality in this trash heap. Give it a listen and find out who gets to do the Fingering!
This week Jason and Mike continue on with the Duck theme and revisit the 90's Disney classic The Mighty Ducks. Currently streaming on Netflix this movie was the epitome of kids sports movies at the time. Did this one stand the test of time? Give us a listen and find out! Also we'll tell you the hardest part about rollerblading........
This week Jason forces Mike to watch the dumpster fire that is Valerian. FYI Mike was not happy about this. Luckily we washed the taste out of our mouths with a little Dunkirk but it wasn't quite the mouthwash we needed it to be. If you haven't seen Dunkirk yet maybe don't listen, if you haven't seen Valerian yet, consider yourself lucky and listen anyway!
This week Jason and Mike visited the wonderful land of St. Canard with our pals Darkwing Duck, Gosalyn and Launchpad McQuack. It was genuinely pretty fun and holy crap did we come up with some great ways to expand this universe. Before you dive in give these episodes a watch if you can:Episode 1 - Darkly Dawns the Duck Pt. 1Episode 2 - Darkly Dawns the Duck Pt. 2Episode 25 - Life, The Negaverse and Everything ElseEpisode 20 - Just Us Justice Ducks Pt. 1Episode 21 - Just Us Justice Ducks Pt. 2Episode 53 - Stressed To KillEpisode 47 - Dead DuckEpisode 52 - Time and Punishment
We took a time machine back to the Prehistoric Age to discern why none of these dinosaurs have buttholes!? Alas we failed our fact finding mission but we did record our thoughts on the movie, give it a listen!
We took a jog down memory lane for the jewel that is Fraggle Rock. This was a big Jim Henson creation of the 80's that aired originally on HBO GO and is currently and presumably always streaming there. Here's the episodes we talked about, definitely give them a watch before you listen if possible!8301 - 8317 - 8318 - 8319 - 8408 - 8520 - 8713
Let's Make Pattycake! On this episode we dive into 1988's hit Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A crossover of live action and animation that had never been done quite like this before. This was a huge hit of our childhood and it didn't disappoint.
I Have The Power!!!!!! (of the penis!)On this episode we drudge back through our childhood to the 80's hit cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. We picked a series of 6 "Greatest Hits" episodes and unfortunately sat down and watched all of them:
Amazon's Rule! Our good fortune led to the two of us seeing Wonder Woman around the same time, so we decided to hop on and do a review:
For our inaugural podcast we decided to go with THE most classic of 90's teen shows in Saved by the Bell. We watched all 6 episodes of the summer special Malibu Sands and share our thoughts here:
