Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 274The Saint of the day is Saints Marian and JamesSaints Marian and James's Story Saint Marian, an ordained lector, and Saint James, a deacon, were martyred during the persecution of Valerian around the year 259. Few other facts are known about them. It seems that while they were in prison, each had a vision regarding his martyrdom. They drew courage from these apparitions and were able to courageously face death. They were joined in their deaths by other Christians. Reflection The old saying that the more things change the more they stay the same may apply to today's celebration. Two faithful people facing the hardships of life during persecution in the third century may have a lot in common with those facing persecution for their faith today. Like the rest of us, the world's royals are mere mortals who meet our universal fate in the end. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr Lectionary: 501The Saint of the day is Saint CeciliaSaint Cecilia's Story Although Cecilia is one of the most famous of the Roman martyrs, the familiar stories about her are apparently not founded on authentic material. There is no trace of honor being paid her in early times. A fragmentary inscription of the late fourth century refers to a church named after her, and her feast was celebrated at least in 545. According to legend, Cecilia was a young Christian of high rank betrothed to a Roman named Valerian. Through her influence, Valerian was converted, and was martyred along with his brother. The legend about Cecilia's death says that after being struck three times on the neck with a sword, she lived for three days, and asked the pope to convert her home into a church. Since the time of the Renaissance she has usually been portrayed with a viola or a small organ. Reflection Like any good Christian, Cecilia sang in her heart, and sometimes with her voice. She has become a symbol of the Church's conviction that good music is an integral part of the liturgy, of greater value to the Church than any other art. Friends of the Rosary, Today, November 22, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Cecilia, a virgin and martyr, one of the most venerated of Roman saints. Her martyrdom probably occurred during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus, about the year 230. In 1599, her grave was opened, and her body was found incorrupt in a cypress wood coffin. Cecilia led a life of prayer and meditation. She had vowed lifelong virginity, but a youth named Valerian, relying upon the approval of her parents, hoped to marry her. When the wedding night arrived, she told Valerian, "There is a secret, Valerian, I wish to tell you. I have as a lover an angel of God who jealously guards my body." Valerian promised to believe in Christ if he could see that angel. Cecilia explained how such was impossible without baptism, and Valerian consented to be baptized. After he was baptized by Pope Urban and returned, he found Cecilia in her little room, lost in prayer, and next to her, the angel of the Lord was standing. Since the Middle Ages, Cecilia has been honored as patroness of Church music. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Cecilia, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! She lived in Rome during the reigns of the Emperors Decius and Valerian. At an early age she left all to embrace a life of unceasing prayer, entering a small monastery in Rome, directed by a nun named Sophia. For her Christian faith, she was seized and brought before the governor Probus and, when she boldly confessed Christ and refused to honor the idols, was subjected to a series of vicious tortures, under which she died. An angel led Sophia to retrieve her holy relics, which are now venerated at the monastery of Grigoriou on Mt Athos. We are sometimes told that monasticism developed in the Church after Christianity became accepted and grew more worldly. The story of St Anastasia is one of many evidences in the lives of the Saints that what we now call monasticism was present from the earliest days of the Church.

This week, we review the sci-fi film, "Valerian and the city of a Thousand Planets," a passion project of "The Fifth Element" director Luc Besson. - What record does this movie hold among independent films and European films? - What did the Geeks think about the story structure and pacing? Did the movie flow well, or were there too many distracting tangents along the way? - With Luc Besson directing both visually vivid movies, which had better visuals, this movie or "The Fifth Element"? - What did the Geeks think about the characters? Was there chemistry between the two leads? - How much did the Geeks like the diversity of the alien races? - How did this review inspire comparisons to "Rogue One," "Sleepy Hollow," the European division of Africa, Jerry Lewis, "Star Wars," "Star Trek," "Alien," and, of course, "Babylon 5"? - This was a pick of our fallen comrade, Dave Teague (his items still remaining on the list & available for being picked). For what reasons did we guess he put this on the list? - Was the alien market scene near the beginning helpful for world-building or overly complicated? - And, what 1990s sci-fi epic did we roll to review sometime in the near-ish future? It's a modern classic, despite a far-fetched final resolution & a massively misguided & forgettable sequel. Strap on your fairy wings, because it is time to go save the monarchy! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Iz Hesketh (@iz.hesketh), proud trans actor and drag performer known for her roles in British soap opera Hollyoakes and Disney's Renegade Nell, to talk about why the Disney+ series Renegade Nell Should've Been Gay(er). Although we wish this series would have been renewed for a second season, the episodes we did get are jam-packed with racial diversity, gender nonconformity, and all-over queer energy; and we think it has true cult classic potential. If you have not watched it yet, we highly recommend doing so before listening to this episode as it contains quite a few spoilers. We were so excited to sit down with Iz and talk about her role as a canonically nonbinary character (one of only 4 trans/nonbinary characters in the Disney universe and the FIRST to be in a live-action series). Normally we can only speculate what creators and the folks behind the scenes were thinking when they make things that just seem SO gay to us, but this time we have firsthand accounts from someone who was actually there on set (and guess what, listeners? We were right!). Many of the people behind the scenes for Renegade Nell were queer themselves and fully open to incorporating that into the characters and story. Viewers can see this for themselves through little changes that make a big impact on representation such as changing Valerian's (Iz Hesketh) pronouns and even incorporating the colors of the trans flag into one of Iz's costumes. Whether the plan was for Valerian to be nonbinary all along, or if they changed it when Iz was cast, we are thrilled to see such inclusive, diverse representation on Disney+. The queerness does not stop at Valerian, however, as the main character Nell is quite masc herself and can easily be interpreted as either a very butch lesbian or a trans man. We also have Leigh's favorite, Polly Honeycombe, a femme who is absolutely besotted with Nell, Billy, a very gay fairy (as are all fairies), and Sofia, the “enemy” in our enemies-to-lovers ship with Nell. Gender nonconformity is woven throughout the show as a main theme. Even when something pretty darn gay does happen, like Polly kissing Nell, the characters are all very accepting and think nothing of it. We know one thing for sure, Renegade Nell Should've Been Gay(er). Iz is saving up for gender-affirming surgery and fundraising through Go Fund Me! Please consider donating to her fundraiser if you are able. "This Saint, who was born in Spain, was the Archdeacon of the Church of Rome, caring for the sacred vessels of the Church and distributing money to the needy. About the year 257, a harsh persecution was raised up against the Christians by Valerian. Pope Sixtus, who was from Athens, was commanded to worship the idols, and refused; before his martyrdom by beheading, he committed to Laurence all the sacred vessels of the Church. When Laurence was arrested and brought before the Prefect, he was questioned concerning the treasures of the Church; he asked for three days' time to prepare them. He then proceeded to gather all the poor and needy, and presented them to the Prefect and said, "Behold the treasures of the Church." The Prefect became enraged at this and gave command that Laurence be racked, then scourged with scorpions (a whip furnished with sharp iron points — compare II Chron. 10:11), then stretched out on a red-hot iron grill. But the courageous athlete of Christ endured without groaning. After he had been burned on one side, he said, "My body is done on one side; turn me over on the other." And when this had taken place, the Martyr said to the tyrants, "My flesh is now well done, you may taste of it." And when he had said this, and had prayed for his slayers in imitation of Christ, he gave up his spirit on August 10, 258." (Great Horologion). His icon shows him stretched on the grill.

As Bishop of Rome from 254 to 257, he battled the Novatian heresy. By his prayers he once healed Lucilla, the daughter of the Roman tribune Nemesius; for this both father and daughter were baptized into Christ. Saint Stephen and twelve of his priests were beheaded during a celebration of the Liturgy, during the reign of Valerian.

Synopsis: Part 2 of a two-part Spotlight series on the rise and fall of the Roman Emperor Galerius: refugee, herdsman, soldier, Caesar, Augustus, Tetrarch, conqueror, schemer, would-be ruler of the (Dacian?) Empire, and persecutor of the Christians. A rollicking Third Century romp inspired by my current residence in his former tetrarchal capital of Thessaloniki, Greece. “Galerius…was born to wipe out the disgrace incurred by Valerian's capture.” – The Historia Augusta “Had I a hundred mouths, a hundred tongues, A voice of brass, and adamantine lungs, Not half the dreadful scene could I disclose.” – Lactantius, On the Deaths of the Persecutors Episode Images: https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/S8_Images.pdf References and Further Reading: https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/S8_References.pdf Please contact advertising@airwavemedia.com if you would like to advertise on this podcast. She lived in virginity in Rome during the reign of Valerian (253-260) — as the Prologue says, 'expelling the stench of the passions from her heart with the sweet-smelling perfume of purity and chastity.' She voluntarily presented herself to the pagans and announced herself to be a Christian, for which she was tortured to death. Her friends Vassa, Paula and Agathonica took her relics to Sicily for burial. A church was built there in her name, and many miracles were worked there.

Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Sixth Week of Easter Lectionary: 291The Saint of the day is Saints Marian and JamesSaints Marian and James's Story Saint Marian, an ordained lector, and Saint James, a deacon, were martyred during the persecution of Valerian around the year 259. Currently on hiatus from writing historical romance, Mallory has written eleven histroms. Her books often are genre hybrids, with a mystery plot as an undercurrent with the romance. The books are Regencies and edge toward the wallpaper line, with a few historical inaccuracies, almost dollhouse like settings and sometimes some incomprehensible world building. For the Earl's Pleasure is a mystery-romance hybrid as we try to uncover what led to Valerien Lord Rainewood attempted murder, which now has him unconscious in an undisclosed location. But luckily for Valerian, the object of his longtime teasing and bullying, Abigail Smart has a gift: she can see ghosts and while Valerian is unconscious, he appears to Abigail. How did the emperor's capture impact the already crisis-ridden Roman Empire, what do scientists make of his alleged grisly fate and how was Valerian's fall possibly mythologized by Christian historians?
