In episode 326 of DCP - Mike & James talk about recovery as seen in the Christmas film "The First Snow of Fraggle Rock”. As they share their experience, strength & hope with you in their journey of recovery.
This is a special HOLIDAY episode featuring the chat I had on Katherine May's Podcast “The Clearing” where guests explore their ideal real or fantasy retreat. Here's what Katherine said about the episode: The ADHD and autistic tendency to rest in motion is fully realised in American author and illustrator Andy J. Pizza's vision of the ideal retreat. Choosing an extraordinary fictional setting which incorporates an ingenious method of traveling the world, this episode showcases the wonder of a brilliantly creative, neurodivergent brain. Along the way, and with many fascinating tangents, Andy and Katherine discuss the power of Miyazaki films, their shared love of Fraggle Rock and longing for direction from the universe. A meticulously thought out and fully realised world that accommodates his own personal experience of ADHD, Andy unveils the most beautifully zany and imaginative dreamscape. An absolute treat. Junk Food Dinner returns for our annual holiday celebration and this year we're feeling particularly nostalgic! Up first, The Muppets gang crashes at Fozzy's mom's house for the holidays and they're bringing all their friends, even the Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock crew, in the 1987 TV special A Muppet Family Christmas. Then, we revisit one of Sean's favorite holiday traditions; we see what movies and electronics film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were recommending folks pick up in the Siskel and Ebert's 1990 Holiday Video Gift Guide! And finally, in the summer of 1992, one of biggest films was the blockbuster sequel Batman Returns. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton returned but this time Batman squares off against The Penguin (played by Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (played by Michelle Pfeiffer). But is it a Christmas movie? You bet your Batmobile it is! All this plus holiday cheer from our buddy Peter, tributes to some fallen heroes, Sean's epic new video mix tape and much more!LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. This might be the funniest, most NSFW episode we've ever recorded—and it's also one of the realest conversations we've ever had about women, comedy, and motherhood. Kristin and Tyler sit down with two women who have done something almost no one in their industry pulls off: build big, boundary-pushing comedy careers… and then become moms without disappearing into motherhood.Natasha Leggero — yes, that Natasha — the iconic stand-up comedian you know from Chelsea Lately, the Comedy Central Roasts, countless specials, and her cult-favorite series Another Period — brings her signature sharp, glamorous, no-BS take on what it really costs to survive Hollywood, stay funny, and navigate the emotional landmines of becoming a mom. She's joined by Sabrina Jalees — a comedian and powerhouse TV writer known for Big Mouth, Search Party, and Apple TV+'s Fraggle Rock — who brings a brutally funny, disarmingly honest look at identity, parenting, and the chaos of raising kids while making comedy for a living.Together, they do what women in comedy have always been told not to do: they get real, they get raw, and they say the quiet parts out loud. You'll hear:• How motherhood collides with a career built on late nights, touring, and telling the truth into a microphone• The invisible pressure on moms to be “grateful” and “perfect” while quietly drowning• The identity crisis of going from “comic first” to “mom first” — and how they're reclaiming both• Why laughing about the darkest, messiest parts of parenting can be the most healing thing you do• Wild, genuinely NSFW stories (strip clubs, autism disclaimers, airline-tracking apps… nothing is off-limits)It's chaotic, brilliant, vulnerable, and laugh-til-you-snort funny. If you've ever felt the pressure to do motherhood perfectly, the fear of losing yourself, or the relief of finally laughing at the mess — this episode is your permission slip. This is the side of motherhood no one talks about. This is the side of comedy no one sees. And this is the episode you'll be thinking about long after it's overNeed more? In this inspiring episode of Philanthropy in Phocus, Tommy D – the Nonprofit Sector Connector – sits down with his longtime friend Dr. Joy DeDonato, Executive Director for the Metro New York region of Blood Cancer United (formerly the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). Joy shares how a lifetime of service began with a simple feeling of wanting to help others, and evolved into more than two decades in the nonprofit sector focused on cancer support, education access, women's issues, and amplifying the voices of those who are too often unseen or unheard. She reflects on the powerful example set by her parents, who modeled service “before it had a title,” and how that foundation of love, grit, and doing the right thing has shaped her entire journey.Joy walks listeners through her professional path from Nassau Community College—first as a student, then staff member and later Executive Director of the college's foundation—to a decade at the American Cancer Society, and on to SUNY Stony Brook working on women's health and women's leadership. Throughout, she emphasizes the power of long-term relationships, showing how mentors, colleagues, and friends have stayed connected across roles, institutions, and life milestones. Joy also shares deeply personal stories of losing loved ones to cancer early in her career, and then, 20 years later, watching close family members with blood cancers move from “despair to hope to strength” thanks to advances in treatment—an evolution that called her back into the cancer space and ultimately to Blood Cancer United.Together, Tommy and Joy highlight the recent rebrand from Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to Blood Cancer United, designed to be more inclusive of all blood cancer patients and families. Joy outlines key initiatives including the Dare to Dream project for safer pediatric treatments, the Student Visionaries of the Year campaign, the emotional Light the Night walks, the Big Climb at Citi Field, and the Visionary of the Year competition that rallies leaders to raise critical funds. She also touches on her wider civic leadership as Vice Chair of Dress for Success Long Island and as a commissioner for both Human Rights and Women's Leadership in Suffolk County. Through humor, Golden Girls and Fraggle Rock references, and real talk about grit and service, this episode celebrates how one person's commitment to community, equity, and compassion can ripple out to transform countless lives.

That's why Mel Sauder, Founder and President of MVP Kids, is inspiring others with his dedication to helping kids develop critical “living skills” through immersive storytelling and multimedia resources.MVP Kids is a mission-driven company that creates award-winning books, puppets, and now, a groundbreaking animated series. “We founded MVP Kids 10 years ago because we have a passion for kids. Our kids, your kids, all kids,” Mel explained. “How do kids learn living skills? How do they learn what their emotions are and how to manage them? How do they build their character?” These are the questions that drive their work.At the heart of MVP Kids are 16 diverse characters carefully designed to help children see themselves and others in an inclusive, inspiring way. “We developed 16 unique kids where every child can see themselves and kids who are different from themselves,” Mel said. “We celebrate differences—not just skin color, but hair, size, family structure, and personality.” By creating relatable, trusted friends, MVP Kids teaches essential values like kindness, resilience, and emotional intelligence. The next big step for MVP Kids is bringing these characters to life through animation. Working with legendary children's storyteller John Semper, whose credits include “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” and “Fraggle Rock,” MVP Kids is developing an adventure-filled series aimed at teaching kids while entertaining them. The company has already secured a $2.5 million matching commitment from animation studio Toonz and is raising the rest through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on NetCapital.Mel's passion for this work stems from personal experience. As the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, he's witnessed firsthand the importance of building character from a young age. “Kids' character isn't developed overnight—it's built day by day,” he noted. MVP Kids creates tools for parents and educators to foster those daily lessons in fun, meaningful ways. What stands out most about MVP Kids is its commitment to leaving no child behind. Whether it's a puppet helping a boy work through anger issues or an animated hero teaching resilience, Mel and his team are creating life-changing resources for families. You can support this inspiring mission by exploring their crowdfunding campaign at NetCapital. Everyone deserves the chance to invest in a brighter future for kids.tl;dr:MVP Kids helps children build character and resilience through multimedia tools like books and animation.Mel Sauder's passion for kids inspired him to create 16 diverse characters kids can relate to.The company's animated series is being developed with storytelling legend John Semper.MVP Kids is raising capital via NetCapital, with a $2.5M match from animation studio Toonz.Mel's mission is to empower parents and educators to raise compassionate, high-character children. How to Develop Passion for Raising Good Kids As a SuperpowerMel Sauder's superpower is his deep passion for helping children grow into resilient, high-character individuals. “Our superpower is just our passion for kids, for raising what we call real MVPs,” he explained. This relentless commitment has driven Mel and his wife to dedicate over a decade to creating tools that empower parents and educators to build strong, compassionate children. By focusing on universal virtues and avoiding divisive topics, Mel ensures that every child can benefit from their resources.Illustrative Story:Mel's passion stems from personal experience. When he married into a family with two teenagers, he faced the challenges of blended family dynamics and realized how much support parents need. His efforts to build a strong, loving family inspired his mission to help other parents. Now, MVP Kids provides tools like books, puppets, and animated stories to ensure every child has trusted friends and mentors to guide their growth.Tips for Developing This Superpower:Take ownership of your role in shaping children's futures.Commit to spending daily interactive time with kids, even before birth.Use creative tools like stories and laughter to teach character and life skills.Collaborate with experts in fields like child psychology to enrich your efforts.Focus on empowering kids to be their unique selves rather than pushing specific agendas.By following Mel's example and advice, you can make passion for raising good kids a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMel Sauder (he/him):Founder and President, MVP KidsAbout MVP Kids: MVP Kids® is an immersive entertainment ecosystem combining fun storytelling with our sixteen trusted friends—relatable MVP Kids characters who celebrate differences and grow alongside the audience. “I grew up with puppetry and voices and weird little characters. I never really let that go — I just found ways to turn it into a life.” - Nate Begle In this episode, we're joined by Nate - He's a voice actor and puppeteer with over two decades of experience in storytelling across stage, screen, and sound. His career has spanned live theme park shows, national commercials, animation, and narration work for over 30 audiobooks. Nate has collaborated with major creative institutions, including James Patterson, The Jim Henson Company, Walt Disney Entertainment, and Sesame Street. Deeply rooted in performance, character work, and voice, Nate brings a grounded and authentic presence to everything he creates. He allows the characters, not the performer, to take center stage.Nate and I nestle in for a tender, playful, and witty conversation about a life built around performance. We talk discovering creative purpose early, navigating years of invisible work, and learning how to keep showing up for the craft even when no one is watching. We talk about his roots in Midwest community theater, how Fraggle Rock cracked open a lifelong fascination with puppetry, and the reality of building a career from bits and odd jobs to full-time creative expression. Along the way, we dive into themes like staying grounded while performing, the therapeutic power of play, self-belief in the face of doubt, and the surprising joy of working just off-camera.From humor and nostalgia to identity and intention, this conversation brings small insights that build into something honest, warm, and very real.More notable quotes from the episode:- “A lot of people think voiceover is just ‘talking,' but it's not. It's acting. It's truth-telling. It's intention.”- “It's like, if you see something that's not available where you're at - then make it.”- “There's a moment where you stop trying to get it perfect and start asking if it feels true. That's when you know you're doing the work.”For more on Nate Begle, head over to his IMDB here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4662429/Checkout Nates website here: https://www.natebegle.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@NateBegleLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nate-begle-785155bb/Hit subscribe, we'll see ya next episode.

Journey with us through the comedic time machine as we celebrate our 175th episode by unearthing comedy gold from our archives! This special retrospective episode reveals the raw, unfiltered humor that shaped our podcast's identity from the very beginning. The laughs kick off with our unvarnished take on the Happy Gilmore 2 trailer, where we dissect Hollywood's ongoing love affair with nostalgia and question whether Adam Sandler's upcoming sequel can recapture the magic of the original. Our no-holds-barred analysis reflects our commitment to honest comedy criticism – we call it like we see it, even when it means questioning beloved franchises. Then comes the unexpected reveal of John's secret AI metal project "Fermented Fear," complete with a world premiere of "Ashes of Salem" – a legitimately impressive track blending clean vocals with aggressive screaming sections. The detailed breakdown of creating AI-generated music and visuals showcases how we're constantly exploring new creative frontiers while staying true to our metal roots. The heart of the episode delivers exactly what longtime listeners crave – a hilarious revisiting of our earliest comedy sketches. From the wildly inappropriate Fraggle Rock parody that had us both in stitches, to the introduction of the now-beloved Jerry character at the movie theater, these unscripted moments capture the spontaneous magic that defined our early work. In the fifty-seventh episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator Steve Riddle welcomes James Gruenberg, Andy Atherton, and Mirandia Berthold to discuss which Muppet Characters deserve a place on their respective lists. Is Kermit the Frog a no-brainer? What about Fozzie Bear? Does Gonzo grab a spot? Does the Swedish Chef or Statler & Waldorf deserve a place? After that, they discuss which Muppet Films/TV Shows will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that the Muppets Take Manhattan shouldn't get a spot? Will A Muppet Family Christmas be included? Is The Muppet Show in the conversation? What about Fraggle Rock or The Muppet Movie?
In this exciting episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty explores two incredible creative projects. First, he dives into the magical world of children's book creation with authors Sudipta Bardhan-Quillin and Leeza Hernandez, creators of the delightful "Cats and Construction Hats." This isn't just another children's book - it's a vibrant celebration of teamwork, creativity, and the power of collaboration. Sudipta and Leeza share their unique journey of bringing this colorful story to life, revealing how a simple conversation about cats in construction hats transformed into a meaningful book about working together. The episode also features an exciting conversation with Marissa Cohen and Peter Alexander about "The Cloaked Realm," an innovative animated sci-fi series. The creators discuss their passion for reviving forgotten 19th-century science fiction stories, creating a series that's intellectually stimulating for viewers 11 and up. Their goal is to explore complex human conditions through animation, offering families a chance to discuss deep philosophical questions through engaging storytelling. The serie's core message is powerful yet simple: individual excellence is great, but when we collaborate, we can create something truly extraordinary. Through playful cats wearing hard hats, children learn important lessons about teamwork, individual strengths, and the magic that happens when different talents come together. Leeza's illustrations bring the story to life with incredible energy, inspired by unexpected sources like the industrious characters from Fraggle Rock. Her studio - a riot of color and creativity - perfectly reflects the book's spirited approach to storytelling. For parents looking to spark conversations about teamwork, cooperation, and individual strengths, both "Cats and Construction Hats" and "The Cloaked Realm" offer fun, engaging entry points into deeper discussions about creativity, collaboration, and human potential. Listeners will walk away inspired by the creative process, the importance of collaboration, and the joy of storytelling. It's a must-listen for parents, educators, and anyone who loves seeing creativity in action! Send us a textOkay, so here's the story: A community of imaginary creatures band together to teach lessons of sharing, caring and interdependency. No, not “The Smurfs”. No, not “Care Bears”. Boy, the 80s were full of this trope. Here now is the story of how this Fraggle-tastic show came to Saturday Morning. Is it possible to dance your cares away? Even if you have a white man's overbite? What killed this show since the original series was so successful? Did this show in fact save the world? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this look at FRAGGLE ROCK: The Animated Series! Thanks for ‘tooning in. In which Fraggle Rock is overrun with fuzzy caterpillars and Mokey learns nothing. PLUS: Sprocket does a Scooter Fist! Kava = dirt wine? Missed opportunity for a cowboy song. Millinery lesson time! Eldritch jellyfish butterflies!
Who on this show enjoys eating wood? Who calls 911 when their relatives eat all the ice cream? It's a good day to be a Southern Illinoisan. Well, in a way.
