What does it mean to think impossibly? How do paranormal events, mystical visions, and encounters with the unknown reshape our understanding of what it means to be human? In this episode, host Dr. John W. Price sits down with Dr. Jeffrey Kripal — J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, and one of today's most daring scholars of religion — to explore the borders between the possible and the impossible. Together, they trace the line where scholarship meets the mystical, where imagination bends into healing, and where our deepest worldviews determine what we are even able to see. From UFOs and near-death experiences to William Blake, dual-aspect monism, and the future of spirituality, this is a wide-ranging conversation about living at the edges of reality. Be sure to check out Jeff's latest book, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else. Key Takeaways Embracing the impossible expands not just our knowledge, but our capacity for awe, healing, and transformation. Worldviews — personal and cultural — filter what counts as “real,” shaping how we encounter extraordinary experiences. Paranormal phenomena aren't just curiosities; they are symbolic invitations into deeper practice and meaning. Thinking impossibly is less about belief and more about orientation — a way of living that opens us to mystery. Dialogue at the borderlands of science, religion, and imagination may hold the key to the future of spirituality. We are taking a break from our trip backwards through Pink Floyd's discography to put one last nail into The Wall... The Final Cut is one of the most divisive albums in rock history; and one of the most intriguing... It's an anti-war concept album using the leftover bricks from The Wall to bring attention to the war that Britain had just waged to keep control of their colony in The Falkland Islands. Roger Waters felt that by not finding a peaceful alternative, Britain was spitting on the legacy of the soldiers that died to defend peace and freedom, including his own dad. It's also a pointed criticism of the cold war era and the various land grabs that plagued it, by colonial powers unwilling to let go of the colonial age. On it's own, it's an incredible anti-war album that continues to be relevant any time authoritarianism rears it's head, like now with the rise of fascism in America and the Genocide of Gazan Palestinians. In the context of Pink Floyd and Waters' mental health, however, the album shows how difficult it can be to come to terms with your own trauma without pushing everyone you love away. Both in the context of The Wall and The Final Cut, Rogers is taking on the crushing weight of his own trauma and the dystopian cycle of violence that keeps making albums like this relevant. Pappa Rodger and Kohberger: How Pappa Rodger Mirrored Kohberger's Survey Questions (And EVERYTHING Else!) If Segment 1 introduced the Pappa Rodger mystery, Segment 2 takes us straight into the details that make it impossible to ignore. The most unsettling? Pappa Rodger's prediction about a knife sheath before it was ever public knowledge. That wasn't a casual guess. That was either inside information or a voice speaking with terrifying precision. In this segment, Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer break down the eerie overlaps between Pappa Rodger's online posts and Kohberger's criminology work. The survey questions, the fixation on entry points, the obsession with why this house was chosen — the parallels are chilling. Even down to specific vocabulary. Coffindaffer highlights how Pappa Rodger used the word “dolt” — a term uncommon enough to feel like a signature, and one that mirrors the academic arrogance Kohberger displayed in real life. And then came the confusion: Pappa Rodger disappearing from one group, only for a “copycat” with the same profile picture to appear. Was that Kohberger trying to cover his tracks, or someone else hijacking the persona? The ambiguity has fueled speculation for years. Law enforcement says it wasn't him. But then why do the words sound like his? Why does the timeline match his behavior? Why do his online arguments mirror how he treated students, professors, and acquaintances in person? This segment digs into the forensic linguistics, the digital breadcrumbs, and the bizarre coincidences that make Pappa Rodger one of the most enduring mysteries in the Kohberger case. If it wasn't him, then someone out there was haunting these forums with uncanny knowledge. And that may be the scariest possibility of all. Send us a textAron Ralston's name became synonymous with extraordinary survival when, trapped by a boulder in Utah's Blue John Canyon for six days, he amputated his own arm with a dull multi-tool knife to escape certain death. Yet as he reveals in this profound conversation, the physical act of cutting through his arm represents just a fraction of his story's true significance."We don't get to control what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond," Aron reflects, distilling two decades of post-trauma wisdom into a philosophy that transforms boulders into blessings. The gift of his ordeal wasn't merely survival but a complete reorientation toward what truly matters—loving relationships, present-moment awareness, and the spiritual connections that transcend our physical limitations. The podcast delves into the mystical dimensions of Aron's experience, from recording goodbye messages that filled him with gratitude rather than despair to experiencing a vision of his future son that gave him the determination to free himself. These moments reveal how crisis can strip away superficial concerns and connect us to deeper truths. "You cannot simultaneously hold profound despair and profound gratitude in your heart at the same time," he observes, offering a practical approach to navigating life's inevitable challenges. Now approaching fifty with two children, Aron describes how his understanding of "victory" has evolved from achievement to connection. The father who once sought to conquer Colorado's highest peaks now finds his greatest wins in moments of connection with his children and in choosing peace over being right. His powerful mantra "I'm still here" serves as both a survival declaration and a mindfulness practice that grounds us in the fundamental gift of existence.Whether you're facing your own metaphorical boulder or simply seeking to live with greater presence and purpose, Aron's journey offers a roadmap for transforming adversity through acceptance, gratitude, and the recognition that our true legacy lies not in what we accomplish but in how we love. Listen, share, and discover how to use life's challenges as catalysts for profound transformation.Support the showhttps://bamboolab3.com/
