In this episode of the NCS Podcast Currents series, host Lauren Koffman, DO, MS, speaks with Vanessa Abraham, MS, CCC-SLP, and Jared Rosen, MD, about Vanessa's Story of Hope and the lasting connection they formed during her neurocritical care journey. Vanessa shares how a sudden illness progressed from flu-like symptoms to respiratory failure and paralysis, ultimately requiring mechanical ventilation, an prolonged ICU stay and inpatient rehabilitation. She discusses the uncertainty surrounding her eventual diagnosis of a rare pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome, as well as the fear of being unable to communicate, care for her daughter or return to the life she knew before her illness. The conversation also explores the profound impact of compassionate, patient-centered care. Vanessa reflects on how Dr. Rosen, then a medical student completing an ICU rotation, became a reassuring presence for both her and her husband. Together, they discuss the importance of recognizing intubated patients as active participants in their care, providing accessible communication tools and taking time to listen. They also emphasize how small acts of empathy and human connection can reduce anxiety and potentially lessen the long-term effects of post-intensive care syndrome. To read Vanessa's full Story of Hope, visit NCS Currents. The views expressed on the NCS Podcast are solely those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or official positions of the Neurocritical Care Society.
Many people have missed a lot of the deeper ideas that Pope Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas on AI is built on. Matthew Leonard and Michael Matheson Miller expose not only those deeper currents, but some of the darker forces which the Holy Father is addressing.
Oil prices have eased since the U.S.–Iran ceasefire, but remain above pre-war levels. At 4.2%, inflation is at its highest level since 2023. The federal debt has now grown larger than national income, while Social Security's trustees warn of insolvency within seven years. At the same time, the S&P has risen 17% since March. Binyamin Appelbaum of The New York Times, Larry Edelman of The Boston Globe, Scott Horsley of NPR, and Claire Jones of the Financial Times join EconoFact Chats to make sense of these crosscurrents, discussing whether the affordability squeeze will ease, how the new Fed chair could steer interest rates, whether 'bond market vigilantes' could check fiscal and monetary indiscipline, and what it would take to rein in housing costs.

Pastor Steve continues in our series in Majoring in the Minors and spoke on Amos 5:7-15, 21-24.
Deep breath in… we've made it to June.I am coming to you with good tidings, as Venus and Jupiter reach toward each other in the final days of their luminous embrace. The Great Benefic and the Planet of Love will perfect their conjunction on June 9th, and we are headed into a very special weekend as the Moon and Jupiter enter into a state of special reciprocity in honor of the occasion. I am a little late in releasing the June podcast, which I had the pleasure of recording with the inimitable Brandon Alter of the Spiritual Gayz last week. But I am happy to be writing you this evening, and calling your attention to the skies at this moment. As the Moon moves into Pisces this weekend and into mutual reception with Jupiter, take some time to soak in these life-giving waters and appreciate how far you've come. As a Cancer Sun, I have experienced Jupiter's year-long transit through my Sun sign as a period of incredible growth. It is Jupiter's nature to expand whatever he touches, and as he moves through a sign, he seeks to bless and support growth in the corresponding area of life. But the hard truth is that sustainable growth rarely feels like we imagine it will. As a rule, Jupiter's blessings are not always lasting; there are circumstances in which—if we're being honest—as much as we love him, the guy can be a bit of a blowhard. Think of Indra. Think of Zeus. In every pantheon, the King of the Gods is routinely overdoing it. Sometimes Jupiter traps us in a too much too fast dilemma. It's easy to ride the intoxicating energy of his enthusiastic momentum into a shape we ultimately can't hold. Short-lived blessings are not necessarily worthless. Jupiter's adventures are full of learning and often represent treasured experiences, whether or not they lead to long-lived or lasting circumstances. But what is unique about Jupiter in Cancer (and one of the reasons I believe that Jupiter is exalted in Cancer) is that growth in the home of the Moon can never really outpace the limits of our nervous system. In Cancer, Jupiter works on our capacity to love, nourish, and remain in consistent, loving contact with ourselves. Jupiter can't blow past our limits in Cancer because the nature of Cancer is to be responsive to emergent need. Cancer is the home of the mother. It is the primordial, nourishing waters of the womb, and no matter the quality of nourishment we received from our inevitably limited human mothers, each of us must eventually learn to mother ourselves. It is from this capacity to create safety for our hearts, bodies, and minds that real, lasting, sustainable growth can occur.Jupiter's time in Cancer is coming to an end, but the wealth he leaves behind is lasting. Jupiter has strengthened our container. We can hold more because we can love ourselves more. We can be present with the world because we can be present with ourselves. We've met the boundless self by tending to its limits.I wish each of you a beautiful month, full of gentleness and pleasure. I don't know what final gift Jupiter and Venus will bring, but I hope each of you receives it with joy and love for yourself and others.Love, ChristinaJourney with the Sun:I am currently enrolling for Journey with the Sun, a year-long container for building a living, embodied relationship with your birth chart. Professor John Nilsson-Wright talks to Dr Nick Wright, a neuroscientist and adviser to the Pentagon Joint Staff who researches the brain, technology and security at University College London, Georgetown University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the National Defence University in Washington, DC. They consider how fear, perception, misperception, and memory are tied to different physiological elements of the brain, and how they influence our predisposition to engage in conflict. While we may be conditioned to engage in conflict, we also have the capacity, unlike other species, to reflect on our own internal mental processes — a capacity that offers an optimistic basis for minimising the risk of conflict in the future.

In this episode of the NCS Podcast Currents series, host Lauren Koffman, DO, MS, speaks with Ryan Hakimi, DO, MS, a neurointensivist at Prisma Health and member of the Neurocritical Care Society Board of Directors, about his Currents article, "The Business of Neurocritical Care: Understanding Physician Benefits." Dr. Hakimi explores the often-overlooked financial side of physician compensation, focusing on how retirement benefits can meaningfully shape the overall value of an employment offer. He explains the differences between 401(a), 403(b), 401(k), and 457(b) plans, including employer contributions, tax advantages, vesting periods and expense ratios. He also discusses why a lower base salary may sometimes be offset by a stronger overall benefits package. The conversation highlights why physicians should request and review benefits information during contract negotiations rather than focusing only on salary, title and work expectations. This episode offers practical guidance for physicians seeking to better understand the long-term financial impact of their benefits package and make more informed career decisions. In this episode of the NCS Podcast Currents series, host Lauren Koffman, DO, MS, speaks with Tommy Thomas, MD, PhD, and Aimee Aysenne, MD, MPH, co-directors of the Henderson Equity and Research on Disparities (HEARD) Center, about the center's origins and its mission to advance equity in neurocritical care. Drs. Thomas and Aysenne reflect on the legacy of Galen Henderson, MD, whose mentorship, leadership and commitment to systems-level change inspired the establishment of the HEARD Center. They discuss how disparities in neurocritical care are shaped by factors such as access, geography, education, socioeconomic conditions, as well as the broader systems that influence whether patients receive high-level care. The conversation also highlights the center's three core pillars: mentorship, research and community outreach, including efforts to support early-career professionals, fund solutions-focused disparities research and partner with communities to identify needs from the ground up. The episode concludes with practical insights on how clinicians can begin addressing disparities in their daily practice, from listening more closely to patients' lived experiences to recognizing gaps in who reaches the ICU and strengthening partnerships with community and rural providers to improve access to neurocritical care. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking with Brandon Alter of the Spiritual Gayz about the month ahead! We begin the month with the Sun and Moon in opposition, reacquainting themselves with the Scorpio-Taurus axis newly vacated by the chaotic and fickle Uranus, who has finally completed his 7-year stay. You may find that this lunation feels purgative; we are expelling subtle attachments to old ways of being, ghosts of patterns, remnants of the people we used to be. This moon is about preparing a space in our lives for what is actually already here, allowing what needs to grow to take root and allowing what needs to transform to pass from one life to the next. The first week of May is spikier than the second and third. Pluto will cast his heavy rays to and fro, but stay the course, because this month has the potential to give much more than it takes.Wishing each of you nourishment and love. Trigger warning: sexual abuse and suicide Host Shannon Russell opens Currents framing the episode around the Epstein case as a symbol of systemic injustice and the need for a cultural shift toward healing and accountability. Guests Grace Raje and Big Ocean Women founder Carolina Allen discuss survivor dignity, prevention, and recovery, with Grace sharing her childhood sexual abuse and the lasting impacts, including memory suppression, PTSD, chronic illness, and suicide attempts, alongside the validation she found through connection and therapy. They argue abuse is driven by power and dehumanization, not biology, and outline a “rape culture pyramid” versus a “life culture” model centered on empowerment, dignity, connection, and security. The conversation emphasizes educating children about grooming cues, prioritizing child protection over adult feelings, reducing shame through storytelling, and viewing strong relationships and families as key to prevention and healing, while also noting concerns about beauty trends, eating disorders, and infantilization. “We may not be able to fix every broken system overnight, but we can decide what kind of culture we want to contribute to.” Shannon Russell “Through strong families, it is possible to create a world where sexual violence is not simply punished, but actually unthinkable.” - Grace Raje “It's worth it to heal. Life is worth living.” - Grace Raje “There's nothing more powerful in disrupting abusive systems than healed mothers.” - Grace Raje “God loves children. Our creator has a special place for the most vulnerable, and special children who are looking to us for protection and guidance. And I'll do anything within my power to, to grow that. And I know that that's the ultimate litmus test: how we treat children.” - Carolina Allen “Darkness does not get the final word. It does not. Change doesn't always start in courtrooms, it rarely starts in headlines. It starts in everyday decisions, in how we treat people, how we speak up, how we create safe and honest space in our homes and our communities.” - Shannon Russell 00:00 Trigger Warning and Purpose 00:32 Epstein Case and Cultural Shift 02:00 Meet Grace and Carolina 03:31 Grace Shares Her Story 05:46 Justice Loopholes and CSW 08:12 Twofold Message Healing 10:49 Hope Through Connection 13:32 Trauma Aftermath and PTSD 19:49 Memory Suppression Explained 26:57 Believe Survivors Protect Kids 33:05 Healed Mothers Break Cycles 36:22 Talking to Kids About Grooming 40:54 Families as the Solution 41:56 Why Abuse Happens 42:31 Debunking Biology Myths 43:16 Masculinity and Control 44:35 Not All Men Accountability 45:48 Rape Culture Pyramid 49:30 Calling Out Rape Jokes 52:16 Guilt Versus Shame 55:45 Building Life Culture 01:02:07 Porn Addiction Healing 01:04:39 Trauma and the Brain 01:08:57 Parenting Without Shame 01:11:34 Eating Disorders and Trends 01:18:24 Protecting Children Closing Grace's Presentation at the UN: • Big Ocean Women at UNCSW70: Stories of Sex... Dear Ones,I am back after a long break with the April forecast. Brandon of the Spiritual Gayz joined me for this conversation and, as always, their voice is a gift and a refreshing treat. We are skyrocketing headlong into the Mars+Saturn conjunction, which dominates the skies for several weeks in mid-April. Unfortunately, Mars is likely to ramp up the tension and confusion in an already challenging moment. There is no good way to talk about the times to come. I feel myself gravitating between overwhelm and defensive levity, but if April feels crushing, know that you are not alone and that May and June will bring happier skies and a much welcome reprieve from the relentless quality of 2026.On April 15, Theresa and I will hold a free community session. If you are in need of community or extra support, we would love to see you on Zoom.Additionally, Inner Currents holds a meditation every Sunday morning, which is centered on offering up a special prayer and healing for the world. If you are looking for a way to offer your heart in support of all who are suffering at this time, join us at 8 AM Pacific on Sundays. You can email Theresa at contact@innercurrents.com for the Zoom link.with love,Christinawww.skiesorgrace.com Get full access to Skies and Currents at skiesofgrace.substack.com/subscribe
Streaming giant Netflix withdrew its bid for Warner Brothers Discovery on the eve of this year's Oscars, but it doesn't mean Paramount has won the battle for dominance over the media landscape. Regulators still must approve the deal, and Paramount's offer comes with huge debt. In this first episode of Credit Currents, a new video podcast series from Moody's Ratings launching on April 2, 2026, we reveal the stakes at play for traditional film and TV studios, the exponential value of intellectual property (IP), and how massive acquisitions can create credit risk. We also consider the potentially significant impact of AI on viewing habits and customer preferences. Though turbidity currents are massive and frequent underwater events, we have rarely observed them directly. Esther Sumner is one of the few researchers who has. In the podcast, she describes what it's like to instrument an active submarine canyon, what these flows have revealed about the way sediment moves across the seafloor — and the day her team accidentally flew an underwater robot into a live turbidity current in the Mendocino canyon off the coast of California. She is an Associate Professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Southampton.

In this episode of the NCS Podcast Currents series, host Lauren Koffman, DO, MS, speaks with Charlie Gagliardo, a physician assistant and former medical student, about his journey through autoimmune encephalitis, refractory status epilepticus and long-term recovery — and how those experiences continue to shape his clinical practice. Charlie shares the story of his sudden decline from a thriving pre-clinical medical student to weeks of uncontrollable seizures and medically induced coma. He reflects on the intensive immunotherapy and critical care course that followed, as well as the months of rehabilitation that ultimately paved the way for his return to medicine. The conversation also explores the challenges of resuming medical training after prolonged illness, his decision to transition from residency to clinical practice as a physician assistant and how living with chronic illness has shaped his approach to patient care and empathy. The episode highlights the emotional and professional resilience required to rebuild life after severe neurocritical illness, and the support systems — both clinical and personal — that make healing possible. To read the full article that inspired this conversation, visit Story of Hope: Charlie on NCS Currents. The views expressed on the NCS Podcast are solely those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or official positions of the Neurocritical Care Society.

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz explores the artist background of Tame Impala, the psychedelic rock/psych-pop project led by Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. Since 2008, Parker has written, produced, and performed most material solo under the Tame Impala moniker. The sound evolution traces from garage-psych roots on Innerspeaker (2010), to polished pop-infused textures on Currents (2015), groove/pop hybridization on The Slow Rush (2020), and the latest genre blend of psychedelic, disco, house, and pop on Deadbeat, released October 17, 2025. Deadbeat debuted at #4 on Billboard 200, #4 on Official U.K. Albums Chart, and #2 on ARIA Chart.Tame Impala boasts numerous Grammys, ARIA, APRA Awards, and one BRIT Award, with massive streaming success—e.g., “The Less I Know the Better” exceeding 2.2B Spotify streams—yet waited nearly two decades for a first Hot 100 entry.Focus shifts to standout single “Dracula,” released September 26, 2025, as the third from Deadbeat. This third single delivers a bouncy, disco-leaning groove with a “party-until-dawn” narrative using vampire metaphors for nightlife embrace. Praised for its infectious groove, earworm chorus, and Halloween-adjacent energy, it drew mixed reviews (e.g., Medium 6.5/10) but strong community response in outlets like Atwood Magazine.“Dracula” marked Tame Impala's breakthrough: first Billboard Hot 100 entry debuting at #55 (October 2025), peaking at #30; #1 on Alternative Airplay (January 2026, returned #1 February 7 chart); #2 Adult Alternative Airplay; #23 Rock & Alternative Airplay. It ranked #3 in Triple J Hottest 100 (2025), amassed ~221M Spotify streams by February 2026, with debut week U.S. metrics of 6.5M streams, 1.7M radio impressions, and 1K digital sales. It peaked Top 40 on UK Singles Chart over 16 weeks. An early February 2026 remix featuring BLACKPINK's JENNIE added new vocal layers, verse content, and lyric nods to Parker, blending K-pop with psych-pop. Released post-Parker's JENNIE merch sighting at the February 1, 2026 Grammys—where Tame Impala won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “End Of Summer” (second consecutive in category)—the remix boosted visibility, demographic reach, and chart momentum, sparking follow-up Hot 100 entries like “Loser” (#91) and “My Old Ways” (#56).Analytic Dreamz analyzes “Dracula” as a streaming-driven radio crossover, U.S. chart gateway, and cross-genre platform linking psych-pop and K-pop ecosystems, reinforcing Parker's hybrid legacy amid a 2026 European tour (April 4–May 13, covering major markets like Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Dublin).Tune in for in-depth insights on Tame Impala's evolution, breakthrough success, and strategic significance in modern music.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
