The film that heralded the end of Disney's 2D-animated era, 2009's The Princess and the Frog came as a last hurrah after Disney's foray into Chicken Little, then was followed immediately by Tangled...so where does it stand amongst the Disney greats? Its animation and soulful soundtrack certainly elevate it to that illustrious Disney standard, and Marcus can't get through this episode without gassing up Keith David, not to mention that we get a lovely picture of 1920s New Orleans life and culture...which in turn starts to get a little problematic once you remember the kind of social structure that was around in 1920s New Orleans. Indeed, in addition to some minor pacing issues and the weird look for frog Naveen and frog Tiana, it feels like Disney's hard attempt at being colorblind and refusal to address the social rift between Tiana and Lottie actually makes the film's narrative worse, especially for Tiana's character arc through the film. It's another week with another pseudo-Writer's Desk panel in the back half of the episode, so you know it's another certified banger. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Shelby Oaks is a new horror film written and directed by first time feature filmmaker Chris Stuckmann. It tells the story of a woman determined to find her sister who goes missing while investigating a mysterious abandoned town. It stars Camille Sullivan, Sarah Durn, Brendan Sexton III, and Keith David. It was executive produced by Mike Flanagan, who's known for directing Stephen King adaptations and other horror films. Before making the film, writer/director Chris Stuckmann was best known as a YouTube film critic. He utilized his platform and fanbase to crowdfund the production of Shelby Oaks. It combines elements of early YouTube, found footage, true crime documentaries, and narrative filmmaking to tell its story. The film was produced by our guest, Ashleigh Snead. She has been making independent films for over a decade and is the director of production for Paper Street Pictures, a production company based out of Austin, Texas. She lives here in Anchorage and was kind enough to stop by our studio to speak with ATMI producer Cat Whited about working on Shelby Oaks. In their conversation, Ashleigh talks about the movie's journey from a simple pitch to getting theatrical distribution, her love of independent horror films, and other projects she has in the works. Men at Work (1990) was chosen by co-host Chris, and it's a perfect fit for his love of oddball comedies from the VHS era. Written and directed by Emilio Estevez, the film was a true family affair — with Estevez not only helming the project but also starring alongside his real-life brother, Charlie Sheen. Coming off the back of their late-'80s fame from Young Guns and Wall Street, the pair teamed up for a buddy comedy that blended slapstick humor, blue-collar chaos, and a dash of political satire. Produced by Epic Productions and distributed by Triumph Releasing (a Columbia Pictures subsidiary), Men at Work was Estevez's second outing as a writer-director, following his 1986 drama Wisdom. "Shelby Oaks" is a supernatural horror mystery film produced, written, and directed by former YouTuber turned filmmaker Chris Stuckmann in his feature directorial debut, with Mike Flanagan as an executive producer. It stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Keith David, Sarah Durn, Robin Bartlett, and Michael Beach. Expanding upon an online found-footage series centered on a paranormal investigation team called the Paranormal Paranoids, which also featured Durn, the film follows a woman (Sullivan) desperate to find her sister (Durn) after she vanishes while exploring the eerie, abandoned town of Shelby Oaks. The film premiered at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival in 2024, where it earned mostly positive reviews, with critics praising Stuckmann's direction, the film's haunting atmosphere, and Sullivan's standout performance.
