Jean Jacket is too classy for this world. Alien Superstar. Whip whip!Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss NOPE, Jordan Peele's third foray into the horror genre, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as horse-wrangling siblings attempting to capture evidence of an unidentified flying object. Appearing in supporting roles are Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Keith David.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ Linktree↪ WebsiteThemes and AnalysisThe film has been characterized as containing themes related to spectacle and exploitation. GQ's Gerrick D. Kennedy wrote that Nope "is a movie about spectacle. More specifically, our addiction to spectacle... Nope is about holding a mirror up to all of us and our inability to look away from drama or peril." Kennedy also states that "the erasure of black contributions" to the history of filmmaking plays a significant role in the film. Writer-director Jordan Peele was partly inspired to write Nope by the COVID-19 lockdowns and the "endless cycle of grim, inescapable tragedy" in 2020.Critical ReceptionOn the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 82% of 433 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.4/10. The website's consensus reads, "Admirable for its originality and ambition even when its reach exceeds its grasp, Nope adds Spielbergian spectacle to Jordan Peele's growing arsenal." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 77 out of 100, based on 64 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale, the same score as Us, while PostTrak reported 79% of filmgoers gave it a positive score.Box OfficeNope grossed $123.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $48.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $171.4 million.FutureIn July 2022, Perea revealed that he had convinced Peele and the Universal executives to change his character's fate in the film's climax from being killed primarily out of interest in a potential sequel, saying: "There's no way the story's over in my head. There's no way. For how heroic everything kind of seemed at the end, I'm like there's no way they leave the heroes like this. This is just the start of something new." In an interview with Thrillist, Jean Jacket designer John O. Dabiri suggested that the creature survived its apparent death at the film's conclusion, saying "There's a species of jellyfish that's called the immortal jellyfish... I'm not a movie maker. But if it was me, I would say there would be some interesting opportunity to ask whether we've seen the last of Jean Jacket."In an interview with The New York Times, Peele addressed a character that was cut from the film, listed on IMDb as Nobody, saying "The story of that character has yet to be told, I can tell you that. Which is another frustrating way of saying, I'm glad people are paying attention. I do think they will get more answers on some of these things in the future. We're not over telling all of these stories".#nope #jordanpeele #horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #jeanjacket #kekepalmer #idontknowwhothismanis #meghantrainor #no #creature #alien #twilightzone #americandad #scifi #aliens #paranormal #barbieferreira

This week we continue on with the Year of Carpenter with his most politically charged film in 1988's They Live. Carpenter has a lot to say but not a lot of budget. What he does have is smart casting, a crackling screenplay, and a 5 minute brawl between Roddy Piper and Keith David. OBEY. CONSUME THIS EPISODE. They Live conversation starts at 1:01.
Pat Mullin and Mark Radulich present our They Live 1988 Movie Review! They Live is a 1988 American satirical science fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" by Ray Nelson. The film stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster, the film follows an unnamed drifter[b] who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media. Happy November, Overdue Rentals family. What a lovely way to kick off the month; a brilliant chat with Writer/Director Dean Craig about his new film, The Estate. We also are discussing what is arguable the film that put him on the map, 2007's Death at a Funeral, as well as it's 2010 remake. Now, to put this in to some perspective, here is a list of the insane talent that has performed Dean's work across these three films: Toni Collette, Anna Faris, Kathleen Turner, David Duchovny, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Dinklage (x2), Ewen Bremner, Keeley Hawes, Andy Nyman, Alan Tudyk, Daisy Donovan, Kris Marshall, Rupert Graves, Peter Vaughan, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Keith David, Loretta Devine, Ron Glass, Danny Glover, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Columbus Short, Luke Wilson...just to name a few! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/overduerentals/support

It's scary season, and this year, we've decided to focus on a series of horror films from a director we love in the genre, John Carpenter. For the first in the series, we're taking a closer look at They Live, the 1988 sci-fi action horror film about our evil alien overlords and the drifter hero who brings them down. We discuss the handling of serious themes like homelessness and rampant consumerism, Carpenter's DIY filmmaking style, pro wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper's surprisingly nuanced performance as John Nada, the ubiquitous and uber-talented Keith David's role as the definitive alien-fighting sidekick, long street fights between friends, and the importance of having a healthy disrespect for authority. Put on the sunglasses of truth and join the revolution with us!
Today we welcome Rachel Noll James to discuss her latest film project INGRESS. Biography Rachel is an award winning screenwriter, actor and filmmaker with a focus on female driven films and bringing the female gaze to stories and genres traditionally dominated by a male perspective. Rachel grew up in Santa Fe, NM. She moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College, and went on to study and work in the LA area for over a decade. Rachel spent her first few years in LA working solely as an actor before she found herself getting increasingly restless waiting for other people to offer her work. So she started creating her own. Rachel's first feature was ‘Don't Pass Me By,' a film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Hollywood veterans Keith David, C. Thomas Howell and Sean Stone. Rachel won Best Feature Writer at the LA Femme Festival for the script, and the film was released worldwide in February of 2014. Soon after, Rachel produced and co-wrote the feature film ‘The Storyteller' which won the Silver Prize in the Family Film category in the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and was released on Hallmark Movies Now after winning multiple awards in the festival circuit. Additional credits include the multiple award-winning short film ‘Paramnesia' that was released as part of acclaimed horror collective Fun Size Horror Volume 1, the short film ‘Half Light' that landed Rachel as a quarter finalist in the NextTV directing talent search and was released exclusively through Seed&Spark, and the short ‘Follow The River' that won Rachel honorable mention in the Port Orchard Film Festival. Rachel is currently in post-production for her next feature film, ‘Ingress' which Rachel wrote and directed. Slated for completion in 2022. Rachel is a member of Northwest Film Forum, Women in Film Seattle and a co-founder of the female-focused production company Emergence Films. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas hit rock bottom in our next episode in our WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?... HOLLYWOOD MOVIES! We find ourselves sticking around the Vietnam War, with one of the more underrated films about the subject, while also being one of the more underrated crime films of all-time, that focusses on one of the more underreported issues of the war – the treatment of Black soldiers both during and after the war. Where does such a crossover of war and heists exist? None other than the Hughes Brothers' DEAD PRESIDENTS (1995)! Starring the likes of Larenz Tate, Chris Tucker, Keith David, Bokeem Woodbine, N'Bushe Wright, and appearances from Terrence Howard and Apocalypse Now star Martin Sheen, this follow-up to the Hughes' groundbreaking debut Menace II Society showcases the grim life for a young black man who returns home from Vietnam to no hope for a brighter future. With his back against the corner, he resorts to a heist that goes terribly wrong. Much like Spike Lee's recent film Da 5 Bloods, this movie is based on Wallace Terry's book "Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans", particularly the story of Haywood T. Kirkland (aka Ari S. Merretazon). Join us, as we uncover this less told story of Vietnam, that features brilliant acting, a killer soundtrack, a score by Danny Elfman, violence, heists, PTSD, The Sopranos connections and more... Most certainly, but the spectacle that he is about to witness must not be missed. In this instance there is a rare treat: a woman gunfighter. The only ones who have a chance of getting out of this alive are The Quick and The Dead.Episode Segment Time StampsOpening Credits . . . . . . 00:02:06Favorite Parts . . . . . . . . 00:09:54Trivia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .00:44:28Critics' Thoughts . . . . . 00:54:55Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:www.backlookcinema.comEmail: firstname.lastname@example.orgTwitter: @backlookcinemaFacebook: The Back Look Cinema Podcast Instagram: backlookcinemapodcastTicTok: @backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com
