Send us a textWe remember liking Wildcats but we also admit that the last time we saw it, we were just kids. And that was a long time ago. But it stars the amazing Goldie Hawn and introduces us to the dynamic duo of Woody Harrelson & Wesley Snipes. It has a stacked cast, it's a sports movie, it's rated R, and it's from the 80s. How can this movie not be great?Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Have you ever heard a song and were suddenly transported back in time? A memory of a school dance, a sporting event, or the memory of that song you listened to on repeat after a break-up. Imagine watching a movie without music, would it have the same impact? No! Music is a universal tool a “language” and there are instruments that date back tens of thousands of years. It has been a part of life for so long and often an unrecognized source for personal and professional development. In this beautiful and rich conversation, Sara Leila Sherman, who is a distinguished classical musician and educator, renowned for her work in making music accessible to young audiences through her children's concert series, Mozart for Munchkins, joins us. We discuss the idea of treating music as you would diet or exercise— something that is integral to your well-being. Sara shares how music can be used as part of a mindfulness practice as well as a tool to develop better habits. You'll hear how music is a way to foster connection with others and why it's good to expand our musical interests.
In this episode I unpack the wildest eye surgery you've never heard of—a procedure that uses a patient's tooth to hold an artificial cornea in place. This rare surgery restores vision in people with severe corneal damage. I also react to Goldie Hawn mentioning her cataracts at the Oscars, discussing why cataracts are a normal part of aging and why most people should have them removed by their 70s. Takeaways: Tooth-Based Eye Surgery Sounds Crazy, But It Works: The osteoodontokeratoprosthesis (OOKP) procedure involves implanting a patient's tooth into their cheek, then using it as a corneal support. It's used in extreme cases of corneal blindness when traditional transplants won't work. Goldie Hawn's Cataract Revelation at the Oscars: A throwaway comment at the Oscars sent cataract searches skyrocketing, highlighting how common cataracts are after age 60—and why most people should consider surgery by their 70s. Should Cataract Surgery Be Delayed? Dr. Flanary breaks down why waiting too long can make cataract surgery riskier, especially when glare, reading issues, or night driving problems start affecting daily life. Australia Wants to Learn from America's Healthcare Failures: Ahead of his keynote speech in Sydney, Dr. Flanary shares how Australia is facing growing privatization threats—and why they don't want to end up with a U.S.-style system. Healthcare Comedy as a Teaching Tool: Dr. Flanary floats the idea of a stand-up show explaining U.S. healthcare, mixing satire and real policy breakdowns to educate audiences worldwide on how we got here. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Dana and Tom welcome back guest, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IG) to discuss Shampoo (1975) for its 50th Anniversary: directed by Hal Ashby, written by Warren Beatty and Robert Towne, music by Paul Simon, starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Julie Christine, Lee Grant, Carrie Fischer, and Jack Warden.Plot Summary: Shampoo is a sharp, bittersweet satire wrapped in the glitzy excess of late-'60s Beverly Hills. The film follows George Roundy (Beatty), a womanizing hairdresser whose ambition is undercut by his inability to resist the charms of his wealthy clientele. On the eve of the 1968 presidential election, George juggles a tangled web of lovers—including his current girlfriend (Goldie Hawn), his wealthy benefactor's wife (Lee Grant), and his ex (Julie Christie)—all while trying to secure financial backing for his own salon.Shampoo disguises its sharp political and social critique beneath a surface of sexual farce, letting the characters' selfishness mirror the broader moral drift of the era. The film's humor is sly but never mean-spirited, and its direction, full of casual elegance, ensures that even the most ridiculous moments feel authentic. By the film's melancholic finale, Shampoo has revealed itself as more than just a sex comedy—it's a lament for lost opportunities, both personal and political.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guest02:04 Cast and Background for Shampoo03:32 Relationship(s) with Shampoo06:22 What is Shampoo About?16:15 Warren Beatty's Eclectic Film Choices22:05 Plot Summary for Shampoo23:32 Did You Know?24:44 First Break26:54 What's Happening with Sara29:05 A Listener Question30:42 Best Performance(s)39:01 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)44:09 Second Break45:12 In Memoriam46:28 Best/Funniest Lines49:36 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy52:46 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance56:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:02:28 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:07:21 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:14:03 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:16:06 Remaining Questions for Shampoo01:22:53 Thank You to Our Guest01:24:30 Final Thoughts for the Week01:28:00 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or

A new book by the acclaimed neuroscientist Lisa Genova is always a big event. Genova, best known for her best-selling 2007 novel, Still Alice, has a new novel out this week, More or Less Maddy, which follows a 20-year-old aspiring stand-up comedian who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The protagonist, Maddy, grows up in affluent suburban Connecticut with a father who disappeared when she was young, leaving mysterious boats stranded on their front lawn – a hint at his own undiagnosed bipolar disorder. In our conversation, Genova emphasizes the importance of accurate representation in her fiction, having conducted extensive research with psychiatrists, psychologists, and people living with bipolar disorder. She explains that bipolar disorder affects about 2% of the general population and has a genetic component, with children of bipolar parents having a 10% chance of inheriting the condition. Our conversation explores how bipolar disorder manifests through episodes of mania and depression, with Genova noting that the average time to correct diagnosis is 7-10 years. She discusses the challenges of treatment, including medication side effects and the stigma associated with mental illness. Genova advocates for using the term "neurological disorder" rather than "mental illness" to reduce stigma. She explains that the new novel uses stand-up comedy as a backdrop, not just for its inherent ups and downs that mirror bipolar episodes, but also to explore themes of normalcy and identity. Genova stresses that while bipolar disorder is a serious condition, with proper treatment and support, individuals like the fictional standup comic Maddy can live functional and fulfilling lives.Acclaimed as the Oliver Sacks of fiction and the Michael Crichton of brain science, Lisa Genova has captured a special place in contemporary fiction, writing stories that are equally inspired by neurological conditions and our shared human condition. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels STILL ALICE, LEFT NEGLECTED, LOVE ANTHONY, andINSIDE THE O'BRIENS. Her first TED talk, "What You Can Do To Prevent Alzheimer's" has been viewed over eight million times. Her most recent TED talk, "How Memory Works--and Why Forgetting is Totally OK" was the sixth most watched TED talk of 2021. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where each week we pull some movies off the shelf and recommend a few you might want to watch. This week's theme is sports comedies, specifically some great ones from the '80s that still hold up. If you're in the mood for underdogs, quirky characters, and a lot of laughs, these films should hit the spot. The Best of Times (1986)This one often flies under the radar, but it shouldn't. Starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, it's a heartfelt comedy about reliving past mistakes and trying to rewrite history on a small-town football field. Williams plays a guy still hung up on a dropped pass from years ago, and Russell is the former star quarterback who gets roped into a plan to replay the game. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the movie balances humor with some surprisingly emotional moments. Major League (1989)A classic baseball comedy about a ragtag Cleveland Indians team that's supposed to fail but manages to surprise everyone. Charlie Sheen stars as “Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn, a pitcher with a blazing fastball and no control, alongside a great ensemble cast including Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Rene Russo. Directed by David S. Ward, the film has a sharp sense of humor but also doesn't shy away from celebrating the game itself. The film was so beloved it sparked two sequels, though neither quite captured the charm of the original.Caddyshack (1980)What's a sports comedy list without Caddyshack? Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie redefined the genre with its irreverent humor and unforgettable cast, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. Set at a country club golf course, it's less about the game and more about the absurd characters and their crazy antics. One of my favorite characters, the gopher puppet, was added late in production and ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the film. If you haven't seen it or haven't watched it in a while, it's always worth revisiting.Wildcats (1986)Goldie Hawn leads this football comedy as Molly McGrath, a high school track coach who takes on the challenge of coaching a boys' varsity football team in a rough neighborhood. The film has a lot of charm, mostly thanks to Hawn's performance, which balances humor with just enough seriousness to make you root for her and the team. It's also an early film for Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who both went on to major careers. This was a great cable TV comedy and I watched it dozen of time on HBO and still bought in on VHS.That's the lineup for this week: The Best of Times, Major League, Caddyshack, and Wildcats. Each one brings something a little different to the table, but they all share a love for sports and comedy. Let me know what you think, and if there's a movie you'd like me us recommend, leave us a comment. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Young whippersnapper Steven Spielberg continues his run of dusty, road-centric films with 1974's THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, and we're along for the (surprisingly chill) ride. Writer Esther Zuckerman joins us to discuss the cinematic persona of Goldie Hawn, William Atherton's strange period of leading-man roles, the harmonica stylings of Belgian jazz legend Toots Thielemans, and Spielberg's brief but fruitful collaboration with cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond. It is the one year Anniversary of the reboot of the Dark Mark Show and Mark and Hannah celebrated with quite a wild show featuring legendary scream queen Deborah Dutch, sideshow madman Dangerous D. and sword swallower Cyrus Pynn Deborah talked about how a cheerleading accident led to her not pursuing a life as a ballerina (though she still can do the splits as she demonstrated), having her grandmother's friend Agnes Moorhead of Bewitched fame see her in a high school play, how dating a soft rock star (and smoking weed with a Beatle) led to her relocating to LA, where she got the lead in Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave. She did her own stunts and was dubbed badly in that movie and moved on from there to share the screen with Goldie Hawn, be in Miami Vice, and work with Roger Corman and get dubbed an official “Scream Queen” in the 90s. She is now working on her own sword wielding series of films “Hollywood Warrioress” Dangerous D may be married and has a newborn son, but he is by no means any less outrageous. He claims to swing his son from his ears, offered to give Mark a tattoo on the air. He also talked about his journey from Baltimore where he hit LA with $100 to his name, how he got on Ozzfest, what it takes to impress him and land a spot on his “Shock Show” troupe of performers and why he is producing Cyrus' one man show as a one-time only performance. Cyrus is also known as Cydeshow Cy and Cyrus the sword. debuting his show “Down The Hatch” in February in Los Angeles. He started juggling, fire eating, sword swallowing and doing all sorts of sideshow acts in Virginia and came out to audition for Dangerous D during a performance at Ozzfest and ended up moving in with him. He talks about all that can go wrong if you make a mistake and demonstrated swallowing 2 swords and eating a lightbulb. Where does our DeLorean take us this week? This week, we talk about the classic 1987 film, Overboard. We talked for so long, that we had to spilt this episode up in two parts. We truly gave you a revisit of this film. So much love for Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, but none for Randy Newman! All this and more before heading Back to the Future! 88 Miles Per Hour Podcast: The Podcast that travels Back in Time to revisit the movies & music we grew up with.
Goldie Hawn is a Hollywood legend. And while she never set out to be a movie star, the Academy Award winning actress, producer and director has had a prolific career spanning more than five decades, with iconic roles in films like “Overboard”, “Private Benjamin” and “The First Wives Club”. And while Goldie is beloved for her work on-screen, she is also making an impact off-screen, with her charity MindUp, created with a mission to promote mental health and fitness for children, after facing her own struggles. Goldie sat down with Hoda Kotb to talk about her accidental rise to fame, her famous family and where she finds her purpose.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that hates Gay Halloween. What do you mean you're Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp at Ernest's funeral? This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 1992 satirical body horror-comedy Death Becomes Her Should've Been Gay. Although not everything in this film ages well (that fat suit was 100% not okay), the overall campiness and pure diva star power of Meryl and Goldie sharing the screen make this a must-watch in our books. Death Becomes Her feels like a love letter for every sapphic who never got over that one really intense love/hate homoerotic friendship they had growing up. From the beginning, the entire plot revolves around Helen's overwhelming obsession with Madeline. It has been 7 years, and all Helen has thought about every single day is Madeline. While it may seem at first glance like the obsession is one-sided, Madeline clearly loves playing the games and entertaining the stalking just as much as Helen. Why is she only going after men who have literally been inside Helen? She's being SO loud. In a wonderfully anti-BYG way, instead of Madeline or Helen dying in their eventual attempts to kill each other, they both live thanks to each having consumed a mysterious immortality potion. Though their bodies are horrifically wrecked and require a lot of maintenance not to look as dead as they are, the two have essentially bound themselves together for eternity. They go directly from hating each other to U-Hauling in the blink of an eye. By the time we see them attend Ernest's funeral at the end of the film, Madeline and Helen are openly acting like an old married couple. We know one thing for sure, Death Becomes Her Should've Been Gay.
