Wer auf düstere Sci-Fi-Thriller steht, der muss Upgrade kennen. Der kleine, aber feine Streifen ist eine echte Genre-Perle und viel zu unbekannt. Umso besser, dass Amazon Prime Video den Film nun ins Programm aufgenommen hat. Ganz oben könnt ihr euch den Trailer ansehen.

Mit "Cassandra" (5:21) bringt Netflix das nächste deutsche Netflix-Original an den Start. In dem retrofuturistischen Sci-Fi-Thriller stößt eine Familie auf ein Smart Home aus den 1970ern, dessen titelgebender Avatar schnell ein gefährliches Eigenleben entwickelt. Eine coole Idee, die man aus deutschen Landen nur selten bekommt, finden Michael und Rüdiger. Doch wie zufrieden sind sie mit der Umsetzung? Mit "Apple Cider Vinegar" (27:07) bewegt sich Netflix dagegen auf vertrauten Bahnen. Die australische Miniserie dröselt im Fahrwasser von "Inventing Anna" und "The Dropout" einen echten Hochstapler-Skandal aus. Selten war es jedoch perfider, denn Belle Gibson (Kaitlyn Dever) gab vor, einen Hirntumor zu haben und nahm mit ihren angeblichen alternativen Heilmethode Menschen aus, die wirklich totkrank waren. Kann man sich so etwas ansehen? Zum Ende der Folge stößt schließlich noch Holger hinzu, um über "Rebus" (49:11) bei Magenta TV zu reden. Ein Brit-Krimi aus Skandinavien basierend auf der seit mehr als 40 Jahren laufenden Krimireihe von Sir Ian Rankin, die bereits vor 20 Jahren als Serie verfilmt und für ihre Besetzung von John Hannah kritisiert wurde. As its title suggests, Stefon Bristol's Breathe is a claustrophobic and tense film that will leave you gasping for air. A prescient science fiction piece, Breathe is set in the near future where the earth has a depleted oxygen supply. A small family eke out an existence, but when strangers arrive at their doorstep paranoia seeps into their lives. Are these new arrivals friends or foes? Bristol's film comes with a stacked cast - Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis, Common, and Sam Worthington - and they all bring added gravitas to proceedings. Wallis in particular delivers an impressive turn as the film's central character. I had the esteemed pleasure of speaking with Mr. Richard Bakewell who is the Director and Producer of the new & upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller, "Roswell Delirium" which is slated to be released in March 2024. This movie has a star-studded cast starring Anthony Michael Hall, Reginald VelJohnson, and Dee Wallace with each individual significant role to play. Essentially, it's a movie about survival in Area 51. A young girl named Mayday tries to make contact on a series of ham radios with her father who is in space on a shuttle mission. Instead of making contact she receives an intergalactic distress call from space that leads her on a journey to Spacerock, the land where Area 51 once was. The Eternal Box, a science-fiction thriller set far from Earth in a world-orbiting space station, is a brand-new novel by Rothesay author Taym Saffar. He wrote this novel as a Grade 8 student at Rothesay Park Elementary. It's been selected for a national award. He speaks with host Julia Wright about his writing and future plans.

The first time Helen Macdonald and Sin Blaché met, it was to finish the book they had been cowriting for a year. Macdonald, author of the best-selling “H is for Hawk,” and Blaché, an artist living in Ireland, first met online. During the COVID lockdowns, bored and restless, they started to play with the idea of writing a book together. Chapters began to fly digitally over the Irish Sea. What resulted is “Prophet,” a fast-paced techno-thriller that centers around a lethal mystery: Someone has developed an aerosol that can weaponize nostalgia, bringing people's happiest memories to life only to have them be killed by it. ‘Prophet' doubles as a queer odd-couple romance, thanks to the main characters, whom Blaché and Macdonald fondly call “our terrible men.” Adam is a gruff American super solider, and Rao is a former British intelligence officer who has a gift for telling when people are lying — unless that person is Adam. Kathy Forti, Ph.D. is the author of the newly released Truth Book Series: STACKS Library of Truth and STACKS Awakening Truth, a sci-fi thriller which takes place in Washington, D.C.'s Library of Congress, where a library employee accidentally opens up an interdimensional portal into a library within a library, where all truth is stored.  Prior to penning her novels, she was a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience in the mental health field. Her knowledge of psychopathology adds unusual character depth to her stories. As a direct result of her own near-death experience in 2003, where her heart stopped, Forti became more creative. This led to the development and patent of the Trinfinity8 and Ascension11 Energetic software technology, now used by holistic healing practitioners worldwide.   With a degree in journalism, she worked for several years as an associate producer for CBS-TV. Riley Stearns' Dual crams a lot into 95 minutes but never feels overstuffed. It's listed as a Sci-Fi Thriller but is also pulls off a dry sense of humor really well thanks to lead Karen Gillan. Its biggest accomplishment is providing meta, societal commentary without ever feeling overly pretentious or preachy.  The plot of the movie is very simple. Sarah (Gillan) is living a very depressing and unfulfilled life when she is diagnosed with a terminal illness. To ease the transition for her mother, she opts for the Replacement program that allows dying people to clone themselves so that their clone can continue on with their life. The problem is...Sarah makes a miraculous recovery and is no longer dying. By law her clone has the right to not be "decommissioned" and the way this is handled is by a televised duel to the death where the winner gets to live on as Sarah. This movie is less about some Hunger Games style duel and more about what it means to live a life. Stearns could have made this film really boring and uninteresting  but instead uses awkward situations with hilarious dialogue to make this film a joy to watch. Gillan works well as Sarah (and Sarah's Double). Her last few films have had her really lean into her deadpan expressions and humor and its worked very well for each film. In this one, she's acting against herself in many cases and that just makes it even more impressive. It helps that her character is also very unlikeable. There are times when you start wanting to root for her double as you come to the realization that Sarah kinda sucks.  Dual definitely is worth checking out. Again, despite the opening, don't expect some action-heavy scenes like Hunger Games or Battle Royale. It's definitely not that kind of film.  Like what you hear?
