“If AA works for let's say 10% of people and that's as high as any support group goes. Let's say no one does better than that. If we have AA getting 10% and another method helping 10% and another getting 5%, won't that help more people? There was no straight line to an alcohol free life for Dave. A musician from an early age, he was ALL in on the rock star lifestyle but realized in his early 20s he couldn't maintain that. He went to rehab and was alcohol free for 20 years until he wasn't. You would think it would have been a rager but in reality it was a couple beers, sobered up to drive home and woke up feeling great. The absolute worst thing that could have happened. He convinced himself he no longer had a problem and within weeks he had escalated back to his 20s drinking and drug days and eventually back to rehab. In todays episode we discuss, How he is grateful that his drinking was off the rails and damaging as he couldn't BS others that it was okay unlike his father who slowly drank himself to death. How even if AA worked for 25% of people (which there are no statistics on) there are still 75% out there who are looking for other solutions to find freedom and the importance of finding your own path to freedom from booze (or whatever else is disrupting your life). And one of my favorite topics, how important it is to define our “drinking problem” and solution for what serves the person we want to be and how the best time to evaluate the role of booze in your life is actually before it becomes a problem. This week I talk 12-steps programs and the history of alcohol. The self-reported success rate of AA is 5%-8%. The average spontaneous recovery rate for addiction is 3.7%-18% (depending on the study). That means the big claims made by 12-steppers and tough-lovers are based on shaky evidence at best. For more information about success rates of AA and other 12-step programs, avoid for-profit research and stick with peer reviewed journals or metanalyses of peer reviewed journals. I recommend Dodes & Dodes book The Sober Truth. Saturday Evening Post article from 1941. For more about Jeffery Brandsma's study that showed AA participants fair worse than other options for treatment, see his article, "Outpatient Treatment of Alcoholism: A Review and Comparative Study."Read the infamous 2006 Cochrane Study that showed AA's "success" rates.

SoberSis founder Jenn Kautsch explains how millions of women are stuck in the "detox-retox loop" and are "gray-area drinking" their way through life. My conversation with Jenn dives into these topics and explains how her online program - "The 21-Day Resent" - has helped thousands of sisters kick the loop, and live a sober-minded life. Join the SoberSis 21-Day Reset NowJenn's Bio: I'm Jenn (aka SoberSis). I'm a new empty-nester and people ask me all the time what I'm going to do in this next season of my life. Well, you're looking at it. I feel passionate about making it safe for women to have a conversation about alcohol without judgment, labels, or rules. I'm a retired "grey area" drinker. Around the middle of my 40's, I was tired, feeling stuck on auto-pilot, and ready for a change. I didn't want to enter the big 5-0 the way I did 40. I took a closer look at my life. My health...mental, physical, and spiritual. I began to find out ways to have more energy, better sleep, and really stay present in my own life. I began to realize wine wasn't doing me any real favors. In fact, it was undoing a lot of my hard work during the day (I call it the detox just to retox loop). It had also become like an emotional crutch to lean on during times of anxiety or even boredom! So, I started the 21-day reset for women because I wanted to share what I have learned and experienced first hand. Currently, over 2,000 women from all over the world have participated. We're more of sisterhood, and a real community of women pursuing being present and sober-minded. Each person has the opportunity and space to renegotiate their relationship with alcohol. We are not a sobriety club although many of us do choose to enjoy an alcohol-free lifestyle. I've spent time taking a break from drinking without having to use willpower or feeling deprived. In fact, I'd say it has turned into more of a mindful lifestyle. Learning the science behind what my body/mind was experiencing has empowered me to make different choices. It's like I was living a somewhat divided life, constantly feeling in conflict and stuck in an internal tug-of-war. God really brought me freedom by bringing together the mind-body-spirit connection so I could live a more wholehearted life. That's how I want to live as I get closer to my 50's and beyond. My second edition of "AA-Not the Only Way" which is also at www.aanottheonlyway.com has just become available, where you will learn about my life, as it has taken both its ups and downs, and how I have come out on the other side ok. There is also a multitude of alternative self-help groups to find out about, and other ways to assist you in either stopping your drinking or using, or moderating it to a harmless level. In this new edition, I have also added alternatives such as hypnosis, acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Our first guest is Melanie Solomon, author of "AA Not the Only Way." Melanie is one of many people who did not find the 12 steps helpful in dealing with her addictions and as a result has devoted herself to making a compendium of alternatives for all who can benefit from a different approach. Our second guest is Terry Morris who works at The Speed Project in San Francisco. The Speed Project is a harm reduction project for gay men who use methamphetamine. Terry will be sharing with us her experiences with harm reduction support groups and harm reduction techniques for meth users. As always Dr. Stanton Peele will close the show with his thoughts for the week.
Our first guest is Dr. Amanda Reiman of UC Berkeley. Dr. Reiman has made an in depth study of medical marijuana dispensaries and the use of cannabis to treat addiction. Her publications include "Cannabis as a substitute for alcohol and other drugs" (PMID 19958538). We will be discussing the success rates of marijuana maintenance programs. Our second guest is Dr. Ed Wilson from Non 12 Step Alcoholism Treatment http://www.non12step.com . Dr. Wilson will be discussing with us the fact that it is possible to recover from alcoholism without spirituality or a higher power, and that secular programs which rely on science have far higher success rates than do 12 step programs which require a spiritual solution. We will close with our regular weekly feature--Stanton Peele's thoughts of the week.
