Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community.  We're re-releasing one of our most popular episodes—Episode 13: Did Jesus Drink Wine? With Pastor David—because some truths are worth hearing twice. Or ten times. This episode gets to the heart of a phrase many of us used to justify the habit: “But Jesus drank wine.” It's not just the name of our podcast—it was a story that kept us stuck in a nightly-ish drinking cycle. So today, join us in the studio as they welcome a very special guest: Meade's pastor, David Walters, who joins us as our resident biblical scholar to tackle the burning question: Did Jesus really drink wine—and does it matter? David bravely and graciously unpacks this question and so many more, including: What does Scripture actually say about wine and drinking? What does it mean to “take our thoughts captive”? Why is the heart mentioned over 800 times in the Bible—and what does that have to do with the lies we believe? What are false idols, and how do they relate to alcohol or anything else we turn to for comfort? How do we uncover the deeper truth beneath the stories that keep us stuck? And yes… what do kids and CrossFit have to do with any of this? This episode is packed with spiritual depth, practical wisdom, and powerful applications for anyone on the journey to freedom—from alcohol, or anything else taking up too much space in your life. And don't miss the end of the episode—this week's “tiny TINA” might just be the most brilliant yet. Whether you're new to the pod or you've heard this one before, hit play with fresh ears. Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community.  In this episode, we continue our deep dive into Dr. Lee Warren's 10 Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery, focusing on commandments 6 through 10. As freedom-from-alcohol coaches, we share how these powerful principles shape our approach to helping women break free from the overdrinking cycle. From prioritizing long-term well-being to understanding the transformative power of thoughts, we explore actionable steps—what we like to call Tiny Tinas—to help you take practical steps toward change. Throughout the conversation, we offer personal anecdotes, real-world applications, and insights on how to overcome the immediate discomfort that often comes with transformation.  This episode is packed with advice for anyone looking to rewrite their story, not just in terms of addiction, but in breaking generational patterns, celebrating progress, and renewing your mind. Commandments 6-10: 6️⃣ I Must Love Tomorrow More Than I Hate How I Feel Right Now Hope is the key that pulls us forward. We talk about how focusing on the possibilities ahead can change your outlook on today's temporary discomfort, helping you take action toward a brighter future. 7️⃣ I Must Stop Making an Operation Out of Everything Life is hard, but not every challenge requires drastic measures. We discuss the importance of choosing humor, forgiveness, and simply moving forward—without making everything a major operation. 8️⃣ I Must Not Perpetuate—or Start—Harmful Generational Thought or Behavioral Issues in My Life or Family This is a game-changing commandment. It's all about breaking the cycle. You don't have to pass on trauma, shame, addiction, or fear. We explore how you can rewrite your family's story by making changes in your own life and actions. 9️⃣ I Must Believe That I'm Getting Better at What I'm Doing Growth is a fact, not a feeling. In this section, we dive into how consistency in doing the work—no matter how invisible it seems at first—leads to tangible growth. Trusting the process is key, even when progress feels slow.

After ten years of trying to moderate her drinking, Jill was inspired by Christy's sobriety story in the summer of 2023 and made the bold decision to stop drinking entirely. What followed was a journey of spiritual renewal, mental clarity, and deeper intimacy with God. Jill opens up about the subtle ways alcohol had taken hold of her life—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She shares how it consumed her mental energy, fueled guilt and shame, and ultimately stood in the way of the peace and purpose she longed for. Through surrender, community, and daily obedience, Jill experienced true freedom—and now encourages others to do the same. This conversation is especially meaningful for women navigating caregiving, motherhood, and the pressure to “keep it together.” Jill's courage to speak up and step out is a reminder that the cost of honesty is far outweighed by the gift of freedom. Not all recovery houses are the same. Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick break down the difference between standard recovery homes and Oxford Houses—one’s a structured group home with rules, and the other is self-run by the people living there. They dig into whether these places help or if they sound good on paper. Spoiler: When done right, they can change lives. Oxford Houses stand out because they’re run by the people in them, with no outside management calling the shots. On the other hand, regular recovery homes often have staff overseeing everything. Matt and Ryan get real about the good and bad and what works for people trying to stay clean. If you’ve ever wondered whether these places are a lifeline or a letdown, this episode has the answers. To find Oxford House locations nationwide, visit their house directory at https://oxfordhouse.org/house-directory. This resource allows you to search for houses by state and city and offers contact information and vacancy details. Oxford House maintains individual state websites for state-specific information, including local resources and contacts. You can access these through their state website page at https://www.oxfordhouse.org/state-websites. If you're in Indiana, the Oxford House Indiana website details local houses, application processes, and support resources. Visit https://www.oxfordhousein.org for more information. For real-time vacancy updates, OxfordVacancies.com offers information on available beds across various Oxford Houses. National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR): NARR sets national quality standards for recovery residences and offers a directory of certified homes through its state affiliates. Through raw and unfiltered discussions with experts, celebrities, thought leaders, and athletes, we uncover new perspectives on personal growth, recovery, and overcoming life's toughest challenges. My Story:What sets my journey apart is that there wasn't just one rock bottom—there were many. From being a successful luxury homebuilder to falling into addiction, homelessness, crime, and eventually 27 mugshots and prison, my life was in absolute chaos.Addiction was my temporary escape from childhood trauma, but it only led to destruction. It wasn't until I hit the lowest point imaginable that I finally found true freedom, redemption, and purpose. After an unexpected early release from prison in 2017, I walked 300 miles back to Dallas to turn myself in—only to be miraculously pardoned and told to “pay it forward.”And that's exactly what I've been doing ever since. My MissionI believe that rock bottom is not the end—it's a stepping stone to something greater. My goal is to redefine what "rock bottom" means by helping others rebuild their Spirit, Mind, and Body.On M2 The Rock, I speak openly about trauma, addiction, recovery, and the power of transformation. I don't shy away from topics like:✅ Trauma & Addiction – Understanding the root causes✅ Self-Sabotage & Mental Health – Breaking negative cycles✅ Codependency & Enabling – How relationships impact recovery✅ 12-Step Programs & Spiritual Healing – Finding true freedom✅ Religious Trauma & Personal Growth – Healing from past wounds"Everyone Is An Addict."Whether it's substances, work, validation, or negative thinking, we all have something we struggle with. But recovery is possible, and transformation is real.

Our friend Brandi Babb shares her powerful freedom-from-alcohol story—from her early days as a “good girl” who followed all the rules to confronting the painful realities of alcohol use disorder and the internal divide between her faith and her drinking. Brandi opens up about how her struggle with alcohol began at 21 and intensified after her father's passing. She reveals how alcohol slowly stole her sense of self, leading to a split life that masked deeper emotional wounds and feelings of shame. By learning to slow down and tune into her bodily sensations, Brandi discovered a new way to manage cravings and identify long-standing patterns born from trauma and discomfort. This practice of "orienting" herself in the present moment allowed her to reclaim control and gain clarity. Now alcohol-free for over six years, Brandi has transitioned into somatic coaching, using her personal experience to help others bridge the gap between emotional awareness and physical healing. In this episode, we explore how physical reactions to past injuries can manifest in unexpected ways and how reconnecting with our bodies is key to breaking unhealthy cycles.  Brandi's story is a powerful reminder that recovery isn't about erasing our past—it's about embracing it with awareness, compassion, and a commitment to growth. If you're ready to dive into deeper emotional healing and learn practical tools for managing cravings and anxiety, this episode is a must-listen. Bonus: Interested in learning more from Brandi? Recovery Matters Podcast Episode 167 | Tajay's story begins with a life-changing arrest, leading him to outpatient treatment and, ultimately, to CCAR. He didn't initially seek recovery—it found him. While in IOP, he struggled with staying sober, turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism. However, deep down, he knew he wanted more for himself. His commitment to trying something differentled him to school, where a conversation about psychology unexpectedly introduced him to the idea of becoming a recovery coach. This opened the door to a new world, and through CCAR, Tajay found the support, structure, and inspiration to rebuild his life. One of the most significant changes in his recovery journey was reevaluating friendships and relationships. He realized that many of his past connections were built around substance use, and changing his circle was necessary. He now values friendships based on mutual respect and personal growth rather than peer pressure or partying. Relationships, particularly romantic ones, remain tricky, especially when dating someone who isn't in recovery. However, he emphasizes the importance of healthy communication and setting boundaries.Education played a crucial role in his transformation. What started as a simple way to stay busy turned into a passion. Tajay became deeply involved on campus, founding the Legacy Club to help students network, connect, and take their careers seriously from day one. His belief that “it's not just what you know, but who you know” helped him secure opportunities, despite not yet having a degree. He encourages students to build relationships, take advantage of resources, and stay open to new possibilities.Beyond education, Tajay found purpose in entrepreneurship and music. His first venture, a clothing brand focused on positive affirmations, gave him his first taste of running a business. While it was a learning experience, it laid the foundation for his current passion—creating and promoting music. Initially hesitant, he pushed past self-doubt and began sharing his music on social media, even shooting a music video for one of his songs, Love Life. His new goal is to combine music, merch, and motivation, using his platform to inspire others.Throughout the conversation, Tajay emphasizes that recovery is not easy, but it's worth it. He describes recovery as "armor"—something that protects him from life's hardships. He acknowledges that early recovery is overwhelming, especially when emotions come rushing back after years of numbing pain with substances. However, he encourages anyone on the fence about recovery to stick with it. His biggest message? "Don't quit before the miracle happens."Tajay's life is proof that even when things seem impossible, recovery can open doors you never imagined.Timestamps:00:00 – Intro & Tajay's background02:00 – Getting arrested & his first steps into recovery06:00 – How addiction shaped his friendships & how he had to change his circle10:00 – Finding education as a new path & becoming a leader on campus14:00 – The "Get Out of Here" mindset vs. realizing it's about changing yourself18:00 – Entrepreneurship, music, and using creativity in recovery23:00 – The moment he knew he had to go all in on sobriety28:00 – What he'd say to someone struggling: “Don't quit before the miracle happens.” ----Across the Web----

Today, we welcome Dr. Lisa Stanton to share her powerful testimony. Lisa opens up about her parents' amicable divorce left an emotional void she didn't know how to process. On the outside, she appeared to have it all—private school, sports accolades, and academic success—but beneath the surface, she battled loneliness, perfectionism, and crippling social anxiety. Her struggle with alcohol began early, with an immediate pull toward problematic drinking, and was soon compounded by severe eating disorders. While excelling academically and professionally, she led a double life—outwardly achieving, inwardly unraveling. The weight of it all finally became unbearable during the pandemic, when she was faced with a choice: keep running or surrender. Lisa takes us through the moment she gave up control and turned back to faith, discovering a healing far deeper than she ever expected. She shares the daily practices that helped her break free from destructive cycles, the misconceptions about recovery she had to unlearn, and the profound peace that comes from living in alignment with God's purpose. Her story is a testament to the fact that no one is too far gone, and that true healing—both physical and spiritual—is possible for anyone ready to surrender. 'But Jesus Drank Wine' & Other Stories That Kept Us Stuck

JOIN THE BJDW COMMUNITY HERE! For some reason, sharing my alcohol story has always been easy for me. But today's podcast episode has been 42 years in the making. I've never told this story before. Today, I want to tell you all about how I rediscovered Jesus. It's a story of redemption, sobriety, and His unrelenting love that has shaped my life. This isn't a story of religious perfection; it's one of shame and brokenness and a profound reconnection with God that changed everything. Growing up, my mother's unwavering Christian faith was a constant in my life. She planted seeds of faith in my heart, even when I didn't fully realize it. When I went to college and ventured into early adulthood, those roots of faith began to feel distant. Life's demands and distractions pulled me away, and I drifted. Yet, I always felt a quiet, persistent call deep in my soul—a whisper that refused to let me go. In 2018, my world was upended. Losing my mom was a heartbreak I wasn't prepared for. That loss brought me to my knees. In my grief, I found myself turning back to the Bible, searching for comfort, answers, and—if I'm honest—a way to understand myself again. I didn't just read the words; I clung to them. Slowly, those seeds my mom had planted began to bloom. As I delved deeper into my faith, I wrestled with the tension between living in a performance-driven world and embracing the transformative power of grace. I'd spent so much of my life trying to prove myself—to be “good enough.” But God met me in the messiness of my real life. Here's what I've come to know: being a Christian isn't about rules or rituals. It's about a deeply personal relationship with Jesus. It's about freedom—the kind that heals your heart and fills your life with purpose. It's about saying “yes” to grace when everything in you wants to cling to control. Sobriety has been a significant part of my faith journey. For me, giving up alcohol wasn't just about breaking a habit; it was about stepping into a life of clarity and intentionality, free from the things that clouded my connection to God. If you're navigating your own sobriety journey, wrestling with questions of faith, or simply searching for encouragement, know this: God's grace is big enough for your doubts and your struggles. He has good plans and He can redeem your story, just like He did for me. Where can you turn when a loved one is in the throes of addiction and needs help? How do you know what professionals to trust and if a treatment center is reputable? So many questions surround the topic of addiction treatment, and it's a murky industry. We are discussing the seedy underbelly of the addiction industry with my guest. Heidi Voet, LPC, is a longtime mental health professional and the owner of Chapter House Counseling and Sober Living. Heidi and I take on this important topic and explain why, despite the problems, we would still send a loved one into treatment. Join us to learn more! Show Highlights: Heidi's take on the ugliness of the treatment industry Understanding the medical model of treatment vs. the community model 12-step programs, legalism, insurance corruption, and integrity The truth: Exploitation has bled into addiction treatment. The real dilemma for family members The struggle for political correctness while trying to intervene for an addict Heidi's advice to families who want to intervene: Don't intervene too fast.  Find the lowest level of appropriate care (think of a ladder of options). Be wise and ask questions of the consultant, case manager, or interventionist. (“Are you on the payroll of a treatment center?”) Speak to current clients, alumni, and families of the center. Red flags in your interaction with a treatment center and helpful questions to ask The need to consider gender-specific treatment Why KC would never recommend a wilderness treatment center Assessing a center's approach to trauma, medications, and religious philosophies/affiliations Resources and Links: Connect with Heidi Voet and Chapter House Counseling: Website Connect with KC: Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning We love the sponsors that make this show possible!
