Along the way Dave reads Spotify comments (including kratom taper talk and new listeners coming from the Billy Strings episode), shares a voicemail story about meth, a blow-up with in-laws, and a late-season Sonoran Desert toad that leads to a 5-MeO-DMT “purge.” The replay captures early Dopey's exhausted, bickering chemistry—cookies vs donuts, quitting cigarettes, Gloucester “chowder” nonsense—and Dave closes by reflecting on the early origin of “toodles,” asking for voicemails, problems, and more phony phone calls.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Send us a textService work in AA recovery isn't about giving back - it's about belonging, commitment, and staying sober. "I don't even drink coffee.""That's fine. You haven't been nominated to drink coffee. You've been nominated to make coffee."Steve heard this exchange at his Thursday night men's meeting, and it might be the greatest line about service work ever spoken. Because that's exactly what service work is - doing something that isn't about you, that gets you connected, that gets you showing up.In this episode, Matt and Steve dig into service work in recovery - what it is, why people are afraid of it, and why it might be one of the most important parts of staying sober that nobody talks about enough.Matt opens up about his early motivation for service work, and it wasn't the noble "giving back" thing everyone talks about. It was simpler: "I wanted to feel like I belonged." He shares the story of being a door greeter at the Tuesday night Forbes Street meeting - scared out of his mind, showing up 30 minutes early every week, hugging everyone who walked in. By the end of 5 weeks, he knew everyone in that room. That's the power of service work.Steve talks about his journey from cleaning ashtrays and taking out trash at his Friday night men's meeting to doing district-level work 15+ years later. But here's what he says: "The most rewarding service work is still at the meeting level - because that's where you meet the new alcoholic, the fresh alcoholic who just came out of rehab or is just looking for a meeting."We break down what service work actually looks like:The basics: Putting away chairs, breaking down tables, making coffeeThe commitments: Chairing meetings, being treasurer, being secretaryThe next level: GSR (General Service Representative), district workThe often-overlooked one: Driving people to meetingsMatt shares the "dirty little secret" about service work: it gets you to go to meetings. When you have a commitment - coffee maker, chairperson, door greeter - you show up. You don't bail because you don't feel like it. You're expected to be there, so you go. And that commitment to the meeting becomes a commitment to your sobriety.Steve talks about why he keeps taking service commitments even after 15+ years: "It makes me part of that meeting so much more quickly. This Wednesday noon meeting, I've only been going for about a year and a half, and there are people who've been there for 20 years. But taking the coffee commitment puts me in as part of that group way faster than if I just show up and never do anything."We also tackle the fears people have about service work:"I'm too new" (Matt's fear early on)"I'll do it wrong" (Matt's coffee-making anxiety)"People will judge me"The truth: The stakes are incredibly low. You can't really screw this up.Plus: The story of Ted S. filling the entire percolator basket with coffee grounds because he'd never made coffee before (that's one STRONG cup), why the phone weighs 500 pounds but picking someone up for a meeting is huge service work, and Matt's realization that he never volunteered for coffee at the Monday meeting because he doesn't drink coffee there (problem solved - he's volunteering now).If you're new to recovery and wondering if you should takeSupport the show

In this episode of Uncommon Sense, I'm calling out a problem no one wants to confront: the normalization of partying, drinking, and casual sex especially among so-called “conservative influencers.”You cannot claim to defend Western Civilization while publicly celebrating the very behaviors that destroyed past civilizations. Conservatism without morality is just aesthetic rebellion. We don't need more clout, cocktails, or compromised values. We need a return to godliness, self-discipline, and moral responsibility because the future generations watching us will inherit whatever standard we tolerate today. If we want to save the West, we have to get serious about being truly Christian again.--https://www.bible.com/

ABOUT THE EPISODE:When your child transitions from treatment back into everyday life, the real work begins. Alex Zemeckis and Cannon Kristofferson, co-founders of The Grounds Recovery and Mare's House, know the terrain intimately—not from textbooks or theories, but from walking that precarious path themselves. Now, years into their own recovery journeys, they've built a rock solid sober living ecosystem that helps young adults navigate the delicate nuances of early sobriety while building sustainable, meaningful lives. In this conversation, Alex and Cannon reveal why employment isn't just helpful but essential for young people in recovery, serving as both anchor and compass in those vulnerable early months. They understand the peculiar challenge of leaving treatment's protective bubble, only to face familiar streets, old phone numbers, and muscle memories that can pull a young person back to past patterns. Their approach? Get young adults integrated into real community fabric immediately—working, contributing, encountering actual triggers while building the mental fortitude to navigate them. No therapeutic bubble, no artificial safety—just supported practice at living. After years of working with young adults struggling with substances and mental health, they've noticed the themes that persist: the hunger for genuine connection, the need for purpose beyond sobriety itself, and the surprising power of peer mentorship from those who've earned their wisdom through lived experience and formal education. Their perspective offers something rare—credibility born from personal transformation coupled with professional dedication to helping others architect their own recovery. When you listen, you'll learn:Why meaningful employment serves as recovery's most underutilized tool and how work provides structure that therapy alone cannot The specific vulnerabilities young adults face when transitioning from treatment to home environments (and practical strategies for navigating them) How peer support from those with lived experience creates a different quality of trust and accountability than traditional counseling The common patterns Alex and Cannon observe across hundreds of young adults—and why these patterns actually offer hope Their unconventional approach to community integration that prioritizes real-world practice over extended therapeutic cocooningEPISODE RESOURCES:The Grounds Recovery websiteMare's House website (women's sober living)This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityGet our free, 4-video course, Hope Starts Here, and access to our Limited Membership hereLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. ABOUT THE EPISODE:If you've ever felt uncertain about what your teen or young adult might be using—and how easily accessible today's substances have become—this episode is a must-listen. I sat down with Sebastian Martin, Executive Director at New Life House, a long-standing sober living program for young men, to unpack the alarming rise of so-called “gas station garbage”—substances like Kratom, kava, 7-0H, and “Feel Free” tonics that are marketed as harmless but can create dependency and serious mental health fallout. With his deep professional experience and 15 years in recovery himself, Sebastian offers an inside look at what's showing up in schools, treatment centers, and homes—and what parents need to know right now. You'll hear a candid, compassionate conversation where we explore how experimentation today can escalate much faster than it did even a decade ago, why isolation in a bedroom can be as concerning as chaotic, risky behavior, and how crucial community and connection are in early recovery—for both parents and their kids. We also discuss the life-changing potential of treatments like TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and what true collaboration between mental health and substance use professionals looks like when it's done right. What You'll Learn:What “gas station garbage” really is and why it's showing up in homes, schools, and even jails (but not on standard drug screens)Why today's cannabis and other “legal” substances are nothing like what you may have experimented with as a teenHow to recognize when isolation can be just as dangerous as acting outThe essential role of healthy community for teens and young adults—and how parents can encourage itA powerful mindset shift for parents: how to love your child to life, not to death. This conversation offers clarity and calm in a world of misinformation, helping you understand what's happening beneath your child's behavior—and reminding you that not all hope is lost.EPISODE RESOURCES:New Life House websiteHopestream podcast episode 241 with Dr. Martha Koo (TMS)DEA Fact Sheet on KratomInformation on the “Feel Free” tonic by Eleanor HealthThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityGet our free, 4-video course, Hope Starts Here, and access to our Limited Membership hereLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. What if real estate could rebuild lives while building lasting wealth? In this 45-minute episode of Invest2FI, host Craig Curelop welcomes back real estate investor Jim Boad for an in-depth conversation about scaling success through trust, discipline, and purpose. Jim shares how he pivoted during COVID from struggling rentals to sober-living group homes that blend community impact with strong returns.  Operating in a small Washington market near Olympia, he explains his model of five-bedroom, three-bath homes renting for $700 per bed, often partnered with recovery clinics and DOC reentry programs that prepay several months in advance.  Jim also discusses leveraging $100K–$200K grants, launching a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and working with private lenders at two points and ten percent interest to fund and scale 18 new builds. This episode reveals how purpose-driven investing can generate both financial freedom and meaningful community change. PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS: [03:42] Craig tees up the sober living deep dive with Jim's backstory. [04:00] COVID nonpaying rentals force Jim to pivot toward group homes. [5:24] Buys a $500 coaching course overnight and launches within a week. [07:39] Converts rentals into sober living homes and adds extra bedrooms. [09:41] Payment totals $2,700 monthly; collects $7,000 using per-bed rent. [11:03] Residents' stays are prepaid for two to six months by recovery programs. [12:01] Operations manager Shay handles calls, phones, and food support. [15:31] Random drug testing; any failed test leads to immediate removal. [18:00] Explains the drug-free rule to maintain state and grant compliance. [20:47] Research areas by mapping local clinics and case manager networks. [24:03] Expands via referrals from agencies impressed with his housing quality. [27:36] Keeps furnishing simple, durable furniture, storage, and ready rooms only. [28:12] Secures $200,000 in grant funding and forms a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. [30:26] Grants fund operations, staff, utilities, and resident scholarships. [32:26] Now building 18 homes, start two, refinance, then repeat the process. [34:20] Private lenders fund projects at two points and ten percent interest. [34:51] He met his main lender at a bar, proof that valuable connections can happen anywhere. [36:16] Keeps 30–35% equity to build long-term legacy instead of chasing quick profits. [41:37] Advises new investors to start small and build credibility through consistency. [42:26] Success story: one property doubled in value through patience and discipline.  HOST Craig Curelop

TJ sits down with Meghan Blanchette, a woman whose journey through addiction, relapse, and self-discovery offers a powerful look at what long-term recovery truly means.Meghan shares how her first sobriety date in 2015 marked the beginning of a new chapter—but a prescribed medication after surgery tested her honesty and recovery principles. She chose to reset her sobriety date, a humbling act that redefined her integrity and commitment to healing. Her story opens an important conversation about prescribed medication, relapse, and the moral choices that often accompany recovery.Growing up as an only child who moved frequently, Meghan reflects on how instability and self-blame laid early groundwork for addiction. Introduced to alcohol in middle school and later to opiates through a prescription, her dependency quickly escalated. By her twenties, Meghan was battling homelessness, withdrawal, and despair—until a moment of clarity walking along a busy road pushed her to seek help.Calling her mother and entering detox through Connecticut's 2-1-1 system became the turning point. Meghan went from living in a tent to completing multiple recovery programs—detox, 90-day treatment, halfway housing, and eventually independent living—each step teaching her life skills, self-respect, and community connection.Today, Meghan thrives as a speaker, coach, and the chairwoman of the board at InterCommunity, the very organization that once helped her rebuild her life. Through her platform FiercelyMeghan.com, she empowers others with lessons in emotional intelligence, self-worth, and recovery principles that apply far beyond addiction. ----Across the Web----

Despite having parents in recovery, he struggled deeply with drugs, arrests, and time in the juvenile justice system. He shares the progression of his addiction—weed and pills leading to heroin, crack, and near-fatal lows including homelessness, suicidal thoughts, and severe health complications. A turning point came when he entered detox and long-term treatment programs, where structure and community support helped him rebuild his life. Matt also talks about relapse, rebuilding quickly, and how building a strong network of sober friends became crucial to his recovery. His story highlights both the tragedy of losing friends to overdose and the joy of discovering a fulfilling sober life—travel, motorcycles, relationships, and most importantly, fatherhood. Becoming a dad gave Matt a new sense of purpose, grounding his recovery in love and responsibility.  00:00 – Introductions00:36 – First Treatment at 1305:00 – Escalating Addiction07:00 – First Arrests & Juvenile Justice08:00 – Hitting Rock Bottom at 1810:00 – Sober House & Overdose Scare13:00 – Relapse After Heartbreak15:00 – Waterbury & Heavy Addiction17:30 – Final Turning Point19:00 – Structured Recovery & Torrington Move22:00 – Slip & Quick Return to Recovery23:00 – Building a New Life25:00 – Meeting His Fiancée & Becoming a Father29:00 – Parenthood in Recovery34:00 – Advice for Newcomers ----Across the Web----

This week, we are re-releasing one of Redesigning Life's most well-received and downloaded episodes... Holly Whitaker : Quit Like A WomenHave you ever wondered why we reach for a drink during life's highest moments and lowest lows? Why does alcohol seem essential to celebrating a wedding, mourning a loss, or simply getting through a Tuesday? In this illuminating conversation with Holly Whitaker, author of "Quit Like a Woman", we explore the complex relationship many of us have with alcohol and how it might be affecting more than we realize. Holly shares her personal journey from someone who used alcohol, cigarettes, and food to "ruin herself and clean herself up" repeatedly to discovering a path toward genuine fulfillment without substances. What makes this discussion particularly powerful is the science Holly brings to the table. She explains how alcohol hijacks our dopamine system, making it difficult to experience pleasure from everyday activities and creating a false association between drinking and fun. "Alcohol doesn't actually produce fun," Holly reveals. "Fun things produce fun." This insight challenges the cultural narrative that positions alcohol as the essential ingredient for enjoyment.Beyond the science, Holly offers practical wisdom for anyone questioning their relationship with alcohol. Rather than advocating for an all-or-nothing approach, she emphasizes the power of subtle shifts in awareness and intention. By simply allowing yourself to notice alcohol's effects on your mood, sleep, and anxiety levels, you begin creating space for change.Whether you're sober curious, actively changing your relationship with alcohol, or simply interested in understanding its effects better, this episode offers thoughtful perspectives without judgment. As Holly reminds us, when we release what no longer serves us... whether it's alcohol, toxic relationships, or limiting beliefs, we create space for something better to arrive. What might be waiting on the other side of that glass for you? Listen in and consider what consciousness over cocktails could bring to your life.Holly's Website: https://www.hollywhitaker.com/Holly's Podcast: Co-RegulationHolly's book: QUIT LIKE A WOMANHolly's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollyConnect with Sabrina:https://www.instagram.com/Sabrina_Soto/www.SabrinaSoto.com

Send us a textThe recovery journey begins with a simple truth: addiction isn't about substances—it's about escape. I spent years trying to run from pain, from reality, from myself. But as I discovered, no matter where I went, I took myself with me.My path through the 12 steps wasn't smooth. I approached recovery with skepticism and pride, resistant to the process. What I didn't realize was how deeply the lies I told myself ran. The most profound shift came when someone bluntly told me, "Maybe this isn't about you." Those words cut through years of self-centeredness and changed everything. I had been given something freely, but wasn't passing it on.Recovery transformed more than my substance use—it rebuilt my entire life. Though not overnight. Some relationships mended while others ended, finances stabilized after years of chaos, and most importantly, I found a community of people who genuinely care. The contrast between my life then and now is stark. Where I once dreaded waking up, I now look forward to each day. Where I once was isolated, I now connect. Where I once ran from reality, I now face life with tools and support. For those struggling with addiction—whether actively using or physically sober but emotionally unwell—know that you're not alone. True success isn't about perpetually chasing happiness but finding peace and joy. Recovery offers a pathway there. It's not always easy, but it works. You're just one decision away from a different life. If something in my story resonates with you, please reach out. Visit SuccessfulLifePodcast.com or message me on social media.
