For episode 75, I recorded an adventure banger of a show with fan favorite, Victor Martinez, at Kenneth Hahn State Park in Los Angeles. Victor is a SoCal based trekker, trail runner, backpacker, solo world traveler, Highlander Adventure ambassador, Merrell ambassador, community leader, and is the founder of the LA Trail Killers. Victor was also our EP 37 and EP 55 guest on the show! I caught up with Victor and we chatted about all his unforgettable adventures from trail running Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon, summiting Half Dome in Yosemite on his birthday, the LA Trail Killers Philippines group trip, Highlander Adventure Costa Rica & France, and running 350 miles through the Atacama Desert in Chile for the notorious race entitled "The Speed Project." This episode is part of the Trek Talks series where I record on trail conversations with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. It is more raw and candid perspective of our guest's outdoor adventures as these conversations are more unscripted and in the moment. You can even hear the sounds of nature in the background as we are recording out on the trails. **VIDEO VERSION ONLY AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY APP + YOUTUBE CHANNEL , all other streaming platforms are audio versions** Follow Victor Martinez on https://www.instagram.com/vic_of_earth/ Follow LA Trail Killers on https://www.instagram.com/latrailkillers Follow Just Trek on https://www.instagram.com/just.trek/ Support Just Trek on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/justtrek Shop Just Trek merch on https://www.justtrek.net/shop Listen to more podcast episodes on https://www.justtrek.net Want to send me a message? Whenever we complete a race, it's such an incredible high. People are cheering for us, while we have accomplished something incredible that means the world to us. But after the confetti clears and the event ends, that high can wear away. And worse yet, our brains can sink to a level of post-race depression that feels really hard to kick. For Brooks Bash, after he completed 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days and then ran 315 miles in the Speed Project, he faced this same issue. But took steps and got help to get himself into a better spot to love running again. And in this episode, Brooks shares how he was able to do that. Along with pushing through the low points that can come in an ultramarathon.Brooks Bash is the Founder of Earthy, which is an all-natural drink designed to give athletes sustained energy with no B.S. products. Brooks has also completed 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days, conquered the Speed Project solo of 315 miles in one shot, and has completed tons of other endurance accomplishments. Stuart Chutter is the first trail ultrarunner we've had on the show who is also a regenerative farmer from Melville, Saskatchewan. We were super curious about how a person finds the time for both farming and ultrarunning, activities that each require significant commitment, time and energy for success. So we invited Stuart to come on the show to talk about both his passions. In this episode, Stuart tells us about how he started running and ended up in Melville as a farmer. We discuss the “Five Principles of Soil Health” and the “Bag of C's” that he mentally carries on a run, as well as the dual application of each to both farming and ultra running. As we talk about his running philosophy, we move into a conversation around Stuart's recent experience pacing his friend and recent guest Evan Birch during the 300 mile Speed Project from Santa Monica, CA to Las Vegas, NV which could be a whole podcast in and of itself. We cover a lot of ground in this episode (how's that for a dual pun ?!) and we hope you enjoy this refreshing chat with Stuart Chutter!Connect with Stuart:Instagram: @stuartchutter Article written by Stuart about running/farming parallelsConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! In today's episode, I share my experience of The Speed Project, one of the toughest, grittiest, and most disruptive races. We gathered six runners who had never worked together before to participate in an unsupported 300-mile relay race through some of the most unforgiving terrains in the country. The course was full of inclines and declines, with thousands of feet of elevation gain and loss through mountains and deserts, and we had to plot our own route with precision and speed. This was an unparalleled experience for me, and I can't wait to share some of the stories that came out of it with you all. Enjoy! He shares his nutrition strategy, which included electrolytes and real food, and emphasizes the importance of being adaptable and eating for fuel rather than preference. Birch also reflects on the mental aspect of the race and the need to focus on the progress made rather than the distance left to go. He provides insights into the unique culture of the Speed Project and offers advice for those interested in participating in the race. Birch concludes by discussing his future plans, including upcoming races and a documentary about his Speed Project experience. Takeaways Running can be a powerful tool for coping with mental health struggles and finding joy and self-worth. The Speed Project is an unsanctioned race from LA to Vegas, with a choose-your-own-adventure route and no official start or finish line. The Speed Project is hard to explain. It is a 340-mile relay-style race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, which started as an adventure between friends and has since scaled to global participants. It's an unsanctioned "unofficial-official" race (which means there are no official rules, and no spectators), and has been called "unsanctioned, unhinged, underground and off the grid" - as well as "the secret fight-club style race" (BBC), and "Hardest Running Race in the World" - Hypebeast)In this episode we talk about:The birth of the speed projectWhy Nils loves running why it's an anchor in his lifeWhy people should allow people to love their work and get paidWhen you should quit a side project Why your 'why' matters so much. How you can keep going when doing such an extreme raceP.S. Today on the Pod Troy Meadows brings you a conversation with Shelby Farrell. Shelby is a marketer, cat mom, trail runner, and ultra runner who last year took the plunge, quit her job at Coros, bought a van and with her partner Jason started living the van life with the goal of setting a new FKT on the Long Trail in Vermont. They cover a lot in this episode including how they got connected back in 2021 when she was looking to attempt an out and back of the Lost Coast. Yes, you hear that right an out and back. As many of you know on the pod the Lost Coast was a 2 year running muse for Troy and when he heard about this attempt it definitely got his brain turning. During their convo, they geek out about the Lost Coast. They talk about her solo win at The Speed Project. Dive into her marketing journey and the work that she did for Goodr and Coros before deciding to bet on herself and her running and start living the van life. They talk through the good and some of the not-so-good things about the nomad lifestyle. Rounding things out by talking about her “A” goal for 2023, setting an FKT on the Long Trail. Shelby just released a full write-up on her site about her Long Trail journey so make sure you check it out HERE. Shelby's ability to lean in and bet on herself is a true inspiration and the stoke is high her next year exploring and living the van life. “My goal is to use my brain and body to its fullest” LINKS IG - @shelbzzf Shelby's Website Long Trail FKT attempt write up Adidas LA run club Goodr Coros The Speed Project Lost Coast Solius 59 px - Winnebago Leki Squirrel Nut Butter Scratch Labs If you are enjoying the content, please consider supporting our sponsors using the links below.
