In Episode 28: I had a great conversation with Joshua Mezher about taking care of our favorite plant cannabis. He gives a lot of amazing history of the plant and great advice. But as usual we always get to the same point of "less is more and don't over water". Biggest take away for me: Remove the lower large water fan leaves. Use string or garden ties to extend the lower branches and put some pressure on the branch without breaking the branch. It will let the branch reach for more light and along with removing fan leaves which allows more air flow. Thanks for your time Joshua!RESOURCES: Personal Grow WebsiteMUST WATCH INFORMERCIAL | A Pot for Pot
July 20. 2021 — Redwood Valley is still sorting through the aftermath of the Broiler fire, from the lack of notifications to the power and water it took to fight the fire to rethinking fuel management strategies. Flow Cannabis Company president Jerom Fawson issued a statement saying the July 7 fire quote “originated on our property, after the blades of a mower, operated by our employee, struck rock, causing a spark.” The company has not responded to requests for further comment. The lack of notifications during the incident was a serious problem. Chris Boyd, who chaired last week's meeting of the Redwood Valley Municipal Advisory Council, reported that even though she's signed up with multiple alert systems, she didn't hear from any of them about the fire that burned more than 80 acres and destroyed three homes. Redwood Valley was hit hard this month. Tom Schoenemann, a board member at the Redwood Valley County Water District, reported that the district lost a lot of water on July 7, one unknown quantity to fighting the fire and another to a line that was damaged during work on the infrastructure project. He's expecting quite a power bill for pumping water from the lake back into the storage facility, too. Schoenemann doesn't know yet how much water and power were used during the fire, or if the water district will seek compensation from Flow Cannabis Company. But Adam Gaska, a volunteer firefighter with the Redwood Valley Calpella Fire Department, was outspoken in his call for another swift response. In a letter sent to the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council, the Board of Supervisors, and posted on social media, he called for Amanda Reiman, the company's Vice President of Community Development, to step down from her seat on the Fire safe Council board. He wrote that “After the incident a few days ago, it is obvious that the purpose and mission of the Fire Safe Council isn't carried through into the culture of the company she works for;" and that FlowKana "seemingly didn't have an employee fire safety plan or training...I can't wrap my head around how they could have been directed to be mowing during the conditions present." In a brief interview, Joe Zicherman, the President of the Fire Safe Council Board, described Reiman as a solid contributor to the organization and said the board had no interest in having her relinquish her position. Ruthie King is a contract grazer who put her sheep to work on 46 acres of Flow Cannabis Company land in 2019. She liked what she heard about the company's commitment to regenerative agriculture, and expanded her flock, expecting the sheep to keep nibbling away at the years' worth of accumulated fuels. But early last year, she learned that the company planned to use mechanical means instead. She knows what she wants from her former client and other landowners in the neighborhood. “If they're going to continue being in this community and continue being landowners, I want to see a renewed commitment, like they originally had, to really support, in a deep, real way, this community...big takeaway that I have is that I'm hoping that other landowners who have fuels on their land...are thinking now about their responsibility to manage that.”
July 16, 2021 — The deadline to file petitions for the referenda opposing Chapter 22.18, the county's new cannabis cultivation ordinance, is fast approaching. Employees of a pro-ordinance group shadow signature gatherers and counter their arguments as they urge voters to sign, to get the item on the ballot, to repeal the ordinance in part or in full. Documents showing financial support for the pro-ordinance group are still not available, but the steering committee includes Joshua Keats, of Henry's Original, Amanda Reiman, of Flowkana, vineyard owner Heath Dolan, John Schaeffer, formerly of Real Goods, and Willits schoolteacher Shawna Jeavons. Passions are running high on all sides, with some volunteer signature gatherers for the referendum claiming that the paid workers of the pro-ordinance group are resorting to intimidation. Leo Buc, the pro-ordinance campaign advisor, said field staff have come in for screaming and harassment, too. In an attempt to sort out who's doing what, the Redwood Valley Municipal Advisory Council held a forum on the referenda and the ordinance on Wednesday night, with First District Supervisor Glenn McGourty arguing on the county's behalf. McGourty lit up a discussion among policy watchers on Monday, when he wrote a letter saying he is 100% committed to a lengthy list of amendments and actions, including a full programmatic environmental impact review on all cannabis cultivation in the county. The board passed the ordinance at the end of last month, barely making a state deadline to get it on the books before a requirement for an EIR kicked in. He insists that the new ordinance will include rigorous environmental protections. But Ellen Drell, speaking on behalf of the People's Referendum to Save our Water, Wildlife, and Way of Life, which seeks to repeal Chapter 22.18 in its entirety, says the new ordinance is all about expansion, especially into the county's treasured rangeland zones. Charles Sargenti, representing Small is Beautiful (the referendum seeking to repeal the provision that allows for 10% of qualifying parcels to be used for cannabis cultivation), thinks the new ordinance is mostly sound. He thinks one acre for cultivation is sufficient, and that 22.18 offers plenty of protection for rangeland. Under the new ordinance, only rangeland that has previously been converted to agricultural purposes can be used for growing cannabis. Michael Katz, the Executive Director of the Mendocino Cannabis Alliance, weighed in against both referenda. Chapter 10a17, the cannabis cultivation ordinance that preceded 22.18, relies on a ministerial permitting process that doesn't cut it with the state. It's the discretionary permitting process, which involves the Planning Commission and notice to neighbors, that's key to bringing the county's ordinance into alignment with state law. Katz worries that if the referenda make it onto the ballot and one of them passes muster with voters, growers who are partway to a state license could be stranded in a legal limbo. MCA supports 22.18, but also calls for an environmental impact review. The future is as uncertain as it always is, but amendments and an EIR could be in the future for 22.18, even if it survives the referenda. Compromise, according to McGourty, is always possible.

Affiliate DisclosureThis conversation with Amanda Reiman was enlightening and informative and not because either of us were high. Amanda has established herself as a cannabis expert through years of hard work, research, advocacy and really good muffins. Amanda has been using and growing cannabis for over 20 years and has seen the bias towards the plant change and evolve during that time, giving her unique insight alongside her work in policy, education and research. This conversation is wide ranging but at it's heart is cannabis and how Amanda is making it more accessible to people everywhere. Here are the links for this episode:Amanda Reiman on InstagramPersonal Plants websitePersonal Grow website - join anytime to learn to grow *free!*Let's Get Personal episodeThe Ganjier Cannabis Sommelier Certification programSome of Amanda's research papers/videosThe Use of Cannabis as a Substitute for Opiate and Non-Opiate Pain Medication - Maps (video)Cannabis as a Substitute for Alcohol and Other Drugs - Harm Reduction JournalMAPS podcast Episode 21 featuring Amanda ReimanArdent - decarb + infusion devicesCannabis Drinks by Jamie EvansCannabis Cocktails, Mocktails & Tonics by Warren BobrowState B Cannabis Beverage Co.Know Grow Create podcastPumpkin Muffins recipeThat's it for this week friends. In Lecture 102: I had the pleasure of speaking with Emily Gogol of Grow It From Home a Cannabis/Hemp Nursery located in Oregon. We covered how hardy this plant cannabis is, they don't call it weed for no reason. It doesn't take someone with a masters degree or be a "Master Grower". Having good genetics, a full sun location in your backyard and some good soil and you are set for success. Be sure to join us for the discussion next Wednesday May 26th @ 3pm PT on Clubhouse. Small farms in a region coming together under one banner is nothing new in agriculture—the model has long helped independent and craft cultivators more effectively market and distribute their products, from coffee to food crops. Now, Flow Kana is trying to bring the same model to cannabis cultivators in California's Emerald Triangle. On this week's show, Flow Kana's head of community relations Amanda Reiman joins Bailey and Dante to talk about what this model has to offer farmers and consumers alike.
Dr. Amanda Reiman is helping small, "sun grown, heritage strain" farmers in California create an exciting new market.Dr. Amanda Reiman has been a powerful voice of change in California’s cannabis industry and culture for over a decade. Until last year she led the California office of the Drug Policy Alliance, where she focused on nitty gritty issues such as legalization of adult use, crafting regulations that support small farmers as well as consumers, and ensuring that state’s new laws allow formerly convicted drug felons to expunge their records and work in the new industry.Today, Reiman is still focused on the issues, but from another vantage point: she is Vice President Community Relations at Flow Kana, an organization that supports small, organic farmers in the Emerald Triangle (Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties) brand their “sun grown, heritage strains” and get them to market. (The company recently bought the 18-acre Fetzer wine estate in Mendocino which it is turning into a canna-tourist destination). As you can imagine, farmers have never been adept at marketing and Reiman is assisting them to educate people about the virtues of their cannasseur offerings. In California and other liberated states, there’s plenty of debate about the pros and cons of sun grown cannabis. Here’s a quick summary for all curious imbibers.Pros:Sustainable; sun grown is low carbon footprint (one report estimated that a kilo of indoor grown cannabis with the requisite lighting and ventilation releases over 10,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere)Terpene production higher in natural lightMore resilient to pests and mold.Cons:Seasonal, which means less yield, which means higher prices for customersChanging environment makes crops difficult to standardize, which could be an issue for MMJLess “bag appeal.” Outdoor buds are rangier. It’s harder for growers to shape and cultivate them into those forearm-length buds that customers love to ogle. All of this is a sign of a maturing industry and another interesting talking point for the post-prohibitionist conversation. I look forward to the day when other sunny and poorer states like Alabama or Texas get into the sun grown sphere and give the Emerald Triangle a run for its money. In the meantime, Flow Kana capitalized on its early-market advantage with a marketing coup at this year’s Academy Awards (UNBOXING VIDEO HERE): The company supplied this very groovy gift box of its heritage sun-grown strains to certain canna-friendly celebrities backstage (as if we need another reason to love Francis McDormand). Listen in to a fascinating conversation about cannasoisseurship.
Joe Schrank got the call six years ago that his friend Greg Giraldo had been found unconscious after an overdose in a New Jersey hotel room. Schrank had tried in vain to save him. Using pot instead of cocaine and Valium was something Schrank had suggested to his friend weeks before his death. Although it is an unpopular idea in the rehab world, where Schrank had made his career, he nonetheless had a hunch marijuana could have helped his friend. After Giraldo’s death, Schrank began working with Bienenfeld on treatment plans that incorporated marijuana as a crucial detox step. He also connected with Amanda Reiman, former head of marijuana law and policy at the Drug Policy Alliance, whose research at University of California, Berkeley, for more than a decade has focused on the use of cannabis as a viable substitute for prescription drugs. Schrank took another step and opened High Sobriety – a first-of-its-kind rehab center that uses cannabis as a central part of its treatment plan. Seen as a highly contentious move in the rehab world, High Sobriety has been met with skepticism and criticism for its use of marijuana in a field where success is traditionally measured by total abstinence.

MCBA Spotlight: Amanda Reiman, DPA & Kyla Hill, Hemp Butter It’s Amanda Reiman time once again and with the win, Amanda joins us to discuss what we the people can do to participate in the language of how Prop 64 gets written into law. Amanda shares that localities will be dictating where state licenses can be had. One thought is for folks to discuss with local elected officials that no cannabis in a locality means no cannabis tax revenue in that locality. We then discuss that individuals have the opportunity to go to town halls and public hearings to meet and greet public officials and to give direct feedback. So essentially, act now or forever cede your peace. Kyla Hill then joins us and gives us her unique perspective on people, product and inner-peace.
California Cannabis Opportunities Now with guest Amanda Reiman
Amanda Reiman returns to give us an update on Prop 64. She takes us through the actual legislation, where the money goes as well as where polling is as we speak. We wanted to get this out as soon as possible so while the content is current the sound quality is less than ideal. Then Congressman Jared Polis joins us to give us an overview cannabis in Colorado. The congressman takes us through what’s working in Colorado as well as what’s working in congress. He does have a fairly bullish outlook on what’s possible which I guess is what comes with the territory as a politician. He’s a busy man so we didn’t have a ton of time but there’s a lot packed in to the conversation we had.
Eben Britton, Charlie Adams, Nate JacksonRiley Cote, former NFL and NHL athletes join a roundtable discussion with Heather Jackson of Realm of Caring and Dr. Marcel Bon Miller of the University of Pennsylvania on pain management. We talk about how marijuana is currently used by pro athletes despite the medicine being banned by all professional leagues. The athletes share, to a person, that the stigma associated with cannabis is not so present in the locker room, as long as a teammate delivers. But first Amanda Reiman returns to share how the cannabis regulatory framework is shaping up in Oakland and to provide an update on Prop 64.

Today on Hempresent Vivian McPeak is joined by Amanda Reiman PhD MSW, Manager, Marijuana Law and Policy at the Drug Policy Alliance. Amanda Reiman is Manager of Marijuana Law and Policy at the Drug Policy Alliance, where she works to develop DPA’s marijuana reform work as it relates to litigation, legislative and initiative drafting, campaign strategy, policy advocacy, media relations, fundraising, and public education in the local, state, federal, and international jurisdictions in which DPA is active. Reiman joined DPA in 2012 after working with Berkeley Patients Group, a renowned medical marijuana dispensary, as director of research and patient services.
We first spoke with the Drug Policy Alliance head of marijuana reform and cat enthusiast Amanda Reiman, in Episode 49. Amanda returns to share what's happening with cannabis regulations in California. While a tremendous amount of work has been done, there's still more to do to cross the finish line. If this is your introduction, you should know that Amanda's PhD dissertation, "Cannabis Care," was the first study focusing on how medical marijuana dispensaries operate as health service providers.
Ryan Hunt discusses the use of cannabis for drug addiction and recovery treatment with Amanda Reiman, the Manager of Marijuana Law and Policy at the Drug Policy Alliance. They discuss the taboo of addiction, and substance dependency plus we hear from a recovering patient, Brandie Wilson, about her battle and victory against drug abuse.
Amanda Reiman comes from a homogenous background, but simply in geography. Seeing how her gay friends were treated in her hometown she became an LGBT activist. In subsequent years she added animal rights activism and of course a cannabis activism. She wound up in Oakland researching medical cannabis before it was a thing. Her initial study of 130 patients was the largest in existence at the time. We’ve come a long way and have Amanda to thank for her work along that journey.
Our first guest is Dr. Amanda Reiman of UC Berkeley. Dr. Reiman has made an in depth study of medical marijuana dispensaries and the use of cannabis to treat addiction. Her publications include "Cannabis as a substitute for alcohol and other drugs" (PMID 19958538). We will be discussing the success rates of marijuana maintenance programs. Our second guest is Dr. Ed Wilson from Non 12 Step Alcoholism Treatment http://www.non12step.com . Dr. Wilson will be discussing with us the fact that it is possible to recover from alcoholism without spirituality or a higher power, and that secular programs which rely on science have far higher success rates than do 12 step programs which require a spiritual solution. We will close with our regular weekly feature--Stanton Peele's thoughts of the week.
