A lack of emotional literacy often lessens our ability to face life's storms. As a result, many women resort to self-medicating behaviors to cope. In a more compassionate world, addiction recovery would nurture human needs and prioritize genuine healing. As many global strategies are evolving beyond abstinence, in the US, it is time to recognize that harm reduction programs offer a safe alternative to crisis care. To highlight some more humanistic and lesser-known strategies of harm reduction and healing, Harvesting Happiness Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with clinician, author, and consultant Dr. Stephanie Covington. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough book, Hidden Healers: A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps, Dr. Covington shares recently revealed research and the latest statistics that dispel old beliefs about coping mechanisms, harm reduction strategies, addiction treatment, and healing.WANT MORE SOUND IDEAS FOR DEEPER THINKING? Together we talk about how compassion is better than punishment, deconstructing systems of oppression within our subconscious, and the need for both harm reduction and pleasure enhancement.

If you've ever promised yourself "never again"—only to fall back into the same compulsive patterns—this episode is for you.In this raw and powerful lesson, Craig Perra, founder of The Mindful Habit System, exposes why the traditional all-or-nothing, abstinence-only model for treating sex and porn addiction keeps men stuck in shame and failure.Drawing on the powerful case study of a client named Don, Craig unpacks the psychological cost of using sex to regulate fear, anxiety, and trauma since childhood—and why the key to lasting freedom lies in setting realistic, attainable goals rooted in science, not shame. You'll learn:Why most men relapse in abstinence-only programsHow to separate porn from masturbation as a first harm-reduction stepWhy frequency, time, and severity must be tracked to build healthy sexualityHow to break the perfection/failure cycle and build a culture of successWhether you're deep in the struggle or supporting a loved one, this episode offers hope, direction, and a radically honest alternative to shame-based recovery.
Andrés Gomez Emilsson is the director of the San Francisco–based Qualia Research Institute (QRI), a nonprofit developing formal models of consciousness and emotional valence. QRI's research aims to untangle the harmonic, computational, and symmetry-driven mechanisms underlying phenomenological experience. They approach the optimization of subjective experience through two powerful psychotechnologies — psychedelics and meditation — using them to explore the state-space of mind and map the structure of qualia. In this conversation, we discuss the phenomenology of enlightenment, the non-local field effects of consciousness, and one of Andrés' side projects: how perfumes and smells modulate perception and emotional geometry. Send us a textIn this episode, Dan Hearn and Donna Gilchrist sit down to deliver a raw, no-holds-barred rant about the systemic failures and hypocrisies surrounding addiction treatment, harm reduction, and the criminalization of substance use. With decades of combined lived and professional experience, they dive into the complexities of trauma, abstinence-only models, and the urgent need for policy reform that centers compassion over punishment. This conversation challenges the status quo and dares listeners to reimagine a world where people who use drugs are treated with dignity and humanity.Key Learning Points:

It's an overcast Saturday morning in late March and Station 20 West, located on 20th Street West and Avenue L South, is buzzing with activity.People have gathered to learn more about Naloxone, how to safely administer it to someone overdosing from opioids, and to talk about what can be done to help our community get through this difficult point in time.Saskatoon's drug and overdose crisis has been all over the news. A CBC story notes the Saskatoon Fire Department has responded to 935 overdose incidents or suspected opioid poisonings since the start of the year. That's compared to 376 incidents in the same time period last year. The Saskatoon Library closed two branches for a month over safety and overdose concerns, and Prairie Harm Reduction, which we have featured on the podcast several times, temporarily paused its operations in March to give its staff an opportunity to deal with the trauma they are seeing every day in our city. I think the local media and the Hard Knox Talks podcast have done an exemplarily job of telling the stories amidst this crisis, and I struggled to find a way to get into the crisis through the podcast. Then I learned about this gathering at Station 20 West and thought there might be some people who would be willing to share their stories. So my wife and I went on this Saturday morning and we met some pretty incredible people. We also learned how to administer Naloxone, which you will hear in this episode. We met Colleen Christopherson-Cote, Board Chair for Station 20 West, University of Saskatchewan doctoral candidate, Maryellen Gibson, and Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Saskatchewan, Barbara Fornssler. My sincere thanks to them for sharing their passion for helping others and their community in this episode. Breaking the cycle of addiction is both possible and challenging, but even just rethinking your relationship with it can be a powerful first step toward change. Offering an alternative to strict abstinence models is Kristin Dempsey, the author of The Harm Reduction Workbook for Addiction, who invites you to reconsider your approach to addiction, offering a tangible, compassionate, and science-backed method of recovery known as harm reduction. Through reflective listening, motivational interviewing, curiosity, and "change talk," Kristin talks to Michael about just a few of these helpful strategies for reassessing your relationship with addictive substances (and even other areas of your life) and navigating change in a way that feels both supportive and sustainable. Listen and Learn: How harm reduction and motivational interviewing reshape substance use treatment with compassion What changes when someone explores behavior on their own with a workbook versus in live conversation? How can Kristin's workbook also reveal insights about everyday habits and hidden patterns? Why do we resist advice, even when we ask for it, and how can choice unlock real change? How “change talk” in motivational interviewing helps people move from intention to action Using reflective listening to improve your conversations and build stronger, more meaningful connections Can curiosity, not problem-solving, unlock deeper conversations and personal growth? On march 21 we're in the middle of Podcasthon charity event. It's an annual charity event which sees podcasters come together to highlight different organisations, their work, and their impact Drug use among young people is nothing new, but in recent years it has reached record levels, according to research published in 2022 by youth charity. They found that the number of 16 to 25 year olds taking drugs had increased by 50% since the previous year, reaching one in three. Despite being illegal, these substances are widely consumed. That's why some charities and associations have put in place harm reduction programs, to help minimise the risks associated with drug use at parties and festivals. An example of a charity doing that is Psycare UK, who have been operating for over a decade and offer services at events of all sizes. What are the main risks in party environments? How can these risks be reduced? How can you play a role in creating a more responsible party scene? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! In this episode, we dive into a hot topic in the world of Ultra-Processed Food (UPF) Use Disorder—Harm Reduction. This concept, widely recognized in substance use recovery, has been largely undefined or misunderstood in the food addiction space. Today, we explore: What is harm reduction? How does it work in food addiction recovery? Who might benefit from harm reduction strategies? Practical ways harm reduction can be applied in real-world recovery Join Clarissa and Molly as they break down harm reduction principles, share real-life client applications, and discuss how respect for autonomy, compassion over shame, and evidence-based strategies can support individuals on their unique recovery paths. Key Topics Discussed: ✅ Respecting Individual Recovery Journeys – Meeting people where they're at without shame or coercion ✅ Common Misconceptions About Harm Reduction – How it differs from moderation management ✅ Practical Harm Reduction Strategies – Meal timing, food sequencing, mindful eating, and more ✅ Addressing Clinician Pushback – Why harm reduction is often misunderstood in food addiction spaces ✅ Balancing Abstinence & Harm Reduction – Helping clients determine the best path for them ✅ The Role of Medications & Surgical Interventions – Understanding how medical tools can support food addiction recovery Key Harm Reduction Principles: 1. Respect for the Person Compassion over shame: People struggling with UPF addiction deserve respect and understanding—not guilt or judgment. Meeting people where they are: Recovery is personal; some may need to eliminate certain foods, while others focus on reducing harm without complete abstinence. Building trust: Encouraging open, non-judgmental conversations fosters a supportive recovery environment. 2. Commitment to Evidence Understanding food addiction science: Research shows UPFs hijack the brain's reward system, leading to compulsive overeating. Harm reduction is based on evidence, not willpower. Using proven strategies: Structured meal planning, protein-rich whole foods, and blood sugar stabilization can help reduce cravings and binge episodes. Medication as a tool: Some individuals benefit from medications like Naltrexone/Bupropion to regulate cravings—similar to medication-assisted treatment for substance use. 3. Focus on Harms Minimizing the most damaging behaviors: Recovery is not about immediate perfection but reducing harm over time. Shifting food choices: A harm-reduction model may involve replacing binge-triggering UPFs with minimally processed alternatives. Reducing metabolic harm: Eating whole foods first, balancing blood sugar, and prioritizing nutrition can help mitigate UPF-related health consequences. 4. Recognizing Food Addiction Realities Not everyone can quit UPFs overnight: A phased approach may be more sustainable. UPFs are engineered for addiction: Willpower alone is not enough—practical strategies like structured eating and environmental changes can help. Food as a coping mechanism: Understanding the emotional role of UPFs helps individuals develop healthier coping strategies. 5. Prioritizing Autonomy Individualized recovery paths: Some people thrive with full abstinence, while others focus on reducing harm in certain settings (e.g., social gatherings). Empowering self-directed choices: Individuals should have the freedom to set their own recovery boundaries and decide which tools work for them. Allowing flexibility: Recovery is not all-or-nothing—setbacks are learning experiences, not failures. 6. Socio-Cultural Sensitivity Considering food access and affordability: Many people in recovery have financial or geographical barriers to whole foods. Harm reduction respects these realities. Cultural food traditions: Recovery must honor cultural identity while balancing UPF reduction goals. Reducing stigma in marginalized communities: A non-judgmental, compassionate approach is crucial, especially for those with limited resources. Final Takeaway: Harm reduction is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and neither is abstinence. The key is bio-individuality—what works for YOU? We encourage both individuals in recovery and clinicians to stay curious, open-minded, and evidence-based when considering recovery tools.
