EP255: Why “tough love” doesn't work with substance use and how to set boundaries that actually help with Heather Ross

Our culture teaches that when someone is struggling with substance use, the correct response is tough love. It's better to let them hit rock bottom than to enable their behavior.   My guest today is Heather Ross, host of the Living While Loving Your Child Through Addiction podcast. She's also a dear personal friend. We're letting you eavesdrop on one of the many raw conversations we've had about the devastating impact the “tough love” mindset has on both the giver and the receiver. And why compassion is not the same as enabling.  You'll hear Heather's first-hand account of what happened when she shifted her goal from controlling the situation to connecting with her daughter. Her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring, because despite losing her daughter to a fentanyl overdose, she will never regret that she was a safe place for her daughter–and a source of unconditional love.   Buckle up, because this one's a tear jerker. But whether you're a parent, partner or just wondering how to show up for someone you love, you'll walk away with a clear understanding of how to release fear, find your ground and support your person without losing yourself.    Click here to get Heather's free guide: A New Perspective about “Enabling”--A guide for parents who want to help their kids but aren't sure how.  Find Heather on social media @HeatherRossCoaching, and listen to her podcast Living While Loving Your Child Through Addiction.   If you are ready to get support from a community of women who are co-creating this change with intention and clarity— Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL.  Do you want help from Colleen with a situation you're struggling with? It's Not About the Alcohol

When my client, Michele, told me she was going to reintroduce alcohol. I'll be honest — I was nervous. Actually, that's bullshit. I felt like a failure. She'd been sober for 10 months.  I was her sobriety coach. And at that time, I was still operating on the mindset that once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. Because everybody knows you can't unpickle a cucumber.  But as we learn in coaching school, the client is the expert on their own lives. Telling people what they should and shouldn't do is condescending, not coaching. So I checked my own fear and anxiety and held space for her. Michele is the first client I coached with a truly open mind — where there is no “right” way to drink, no moral high ground for whoever has the most sober days, and no starting over after you have a drink. Alcohol is neutral–it's not good or bad or right or wrong. It's not the problem and it's not the solution. Working with Michele completely changed the way I think about recovery from alcohol use disorder. She is my patient zero, if you will. This experience laid the foundation for the work I do now as a mindful drinking coach. And she's here today to share her story and talk about what it's really like to learn how to trust yourself again…to heal your relationship with yourself so you don't have to worry about your relationship with alcohol. It's raw. It's honest. It's messy. And for me, it's personal — because this opened my eyes, my mind and my heart to see what's really possible when you stop using the past to predict the future.    If you are ready to get support from a community of women who are co-creating this change with intention and clarity— Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL.    Do you want help from Colleen with a situation you're struggling with? The order aims to drastically change how cities and states respond to the homelessness crisis. Overdose prevention starts before the crisis, with compassion, planning, and real-world tools that save lives upstream. In this episode, Sharlee Dixon sits down with Dr. Jorge Petit and Leah Harris from Zero Overdose, a national nonprofit dedicated to preventing overdose deaths through education, empowerment, and harm reduction. Dr. Jorge Petit, Strategy and Development Officer at Zero Overdose, brings over 30 years of experience in community and public psychiatry, advocating for people impacted by mental health and substance use. He has led major initiatives at Coordinated Behavioral Care and Beacon Health Options, and is the founder of Quality Healthcare Solutions. Leah Harris, a Trainer at Zero Overdose, draws on two decades of experience as a speaker and advocate, along with her own lived experience with substance use and recovery. She's worked with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, NASMHPD, and PEERS to advance trauma-informed, person-centered approaches. Together, Jorge and Leah introduce the Overdose Safety Planning Specialist Training—a transformative program that equips providers, peers, and loved ones with the skills to assess and reduce overdose risks. Through frameworks, roleplay, and harm reduction strategies, the training empowers people to meet individuals where they are, without shame or stigma. We'll explore why this training is making waves across healthcare systems, how it centers lived experience, and why overdose prevention must be everyone's responsibility, from parents and providers to communities at large.   For more information about Zero Overdose, please visit: https://zerooverdose.org For more information about upcoming trainings and events, please visit: https://zerooverdose.org/services/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Instagram at: https://instagram.com/zerooverdose/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Linkedin at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zero-overdose/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroOverdoseOrg Connect with Zero Overdose on X at: https://twitter.com/zerooverdoseorg

Stories around substance use disorder (SUD) have too often been framed around crisis and moral failing. But SUD is a health condition—no different from heart disease or cancer—and it deserves public response rooted in care, not stigma. San Francisco is working to change that narrative. Through evidence-based treatment, innovative telehealth programs, and groundbreaking stigma-reduction campaigns like Living Proof, the city is reimagining recovery and how public health can meet people where they are. Dr. Jeffrey Hom, Medical Officer for Science and Policy in San Francisco's Department of Public Health Substance Use Services joins us to discuss how storytelling can shift public perception, and accessible services can guide people onto paths of recovery. The conversation is a reminder that recovery becomes possible when health systems lead with both science and empathy. Dr. Jeffrey Hom is the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Substance Use Services Medical Officer for Science and Policy. He previously served as medical director for the City of Philadelphia's Division of Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction and has lectured for Jefferson Health and the University of Pennsylvania. More Links and Information  Check out more Fors Marsh Media  Connect or partner with Fors MarshLearn more about San Francisco's Night Navigator and street care programs Hear from people recovering from SUD in San Francisco through Living Proof

Ben Kaye shares his powerful story of recovery after years caught in the world of chemsex—a term used to describe using drugs like crystal meth, GBL, and mephedrone to enhance sex, lower inhibitions, and feel more connected during sexual encounters, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. What started as weekend partying turned into daily drug use and emotional isolation. Ben opens up about how trauma, loneliness, and the search for love led him to addiction, including injecting meth to feel a sense of control and connection. "Harm reduction is a really useful term, but it's a bit of a misnomer. Some people are moving toward the phrase Risk Reduction. Risk is always present, but if you play a good game you can eliminate your risks entirely."   This special episode of Coping 101 is hosted by Madlon, c89.5's host of Color Theory, DJ, mental health advocate, and longtime raver. DanceSafe's Richard Hartnell joined Madlon to explore the current state of affairs in the nightlife and festival scene, when it comes to responsible partying, drug policy, and the various ways we can look out for ourselves and each other.    Fentanyl specifically is in the spotlight these days, as an increasing cause of overdose and death among young people. It can be dangerous, but it's also become this catch-all for drug culture. Here we cover what people should know about fentanyl, how prevalent it is, how and when to use narcan - or naloxone - and some of the common misconceptions around it. We invited DanceSafe to guide us through this loaded subject matter, as they're a drug checking, earplug slinging, party servicing nonprofit that was founded on social justice principles. Programs include drug education, sexual health and consent deep-dives, political advocacy, and event outreach.   Presented by c89.5 in partnership with Seattle Children's, Coping 101 is an ongoing series led by students in Nathan Hale High School's Podcast Club. The project destigmatizes mental health from a teen's perspective, and is made possible with support from Friends For Life. No matter our age or background we all face challenges, and there are healthy ways to cope.
