Overdose prevention starts before the crisis, with compassion, planning, and real-world tools that save lives upstream. In this episode, Sharlee Dixon sits down with Dr. Jorge Petit and Leah Harris from Zero Overdose, a national nonprofit dedicated to preventing overdose deaths through education, empowerment, and harm reduction. Dr. Jorge Petit, Strategy and Development Officer at Zero Overdose, brings over 30 years of experience in community and public psychiatry, advocating for people impacted by mental health and substance use. He has led major initiatives at Coordinated Behavioral Care and Beacon Health Options, and is the founder of Quality Healthcare Solutions. Leah Harris, a Trainer at Zero Overdose, draws on two decades of experience as a speaker and advocate, along with her own lived experience with substance use and recovery. She's worked with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, NASMHPD, and PEERS to advance trauma-informed, person-centered approaches. Together, Jorge and Leah introduce the Overdose Safety Planning Specialist Training—a transformative program that equips providers, peers, and loved ones with the skills to assess and reduce overdose risks. Through frameworks, roleplay, and harm reduction strategies, the training empowers people to meet individuals where they are, without shame or stigma. We'll explore why this training is making waves across healthcare systems, how it centers lived experience, and why overdose prevention must be everyone's responsibility, from parents and providers to communities at large.   For more information about Zero Overdose, please visit: https://zerooverdose.org For more information about upcoming trainings and events, please visit: https://zerooverdose.org/services/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Instagram at: https://instagram.com/zerooverdose/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Linkedin at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zero-overdose/ Connect with Zero Overdose on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroOverdoseOrg Connect with Zero Overdose on X at: https://twitter.com/zerooverdoseorg

Stories around substance use disorder (SUD) have too often been framed around crisis and moral failing. But SUD is a health condition—no different from heart disease or cancer—and it deserves public response rooted in care, not stigma. San Francisco is working to change that narrative. Through evidence-based treatment, innovative telehealth programs, and groundbreaking stigma-reduction campaigns like Living Proof, the city is reimagining recovery and how public health can meet people where they are. Dr. Jeffrey Hom, Medical Officer for Science and Policy in San Francisco's Department of Public Health Substance Use Services joins us to discuss how storytelling can shift public perception, and accessible services can guide people onto paths of recovery. The conversation is a reminder that recovery becomes possible when health systems lead with both science and empathy. Dr. Jeffrey Hom is the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Substance Use Services Medical Officer for Science and Policy. He previously served as medical director for the City of Philadelphia's Division of Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction and has lectured for Jefferson Health and the University of Pennsylvania. More Links and Information  Check out more Fors Marsh Media  Connect or partner with Fors MarshLearn more about San Francisco's Night Navigator and street care programs Hear from people recovering from SUD in San Francisco through Living Proof

"Harm reduction is a really useful term, but it's a bit of a misnomer. Some people are moving toward the phrase Risk Reduction. Risk is always present, but if you play a good game you can eliminate your risks entirely."   This special episode of Coping 101 is hosted by Madlon, c89.5's host of Color Theory, DJ, mental health advocate, and longtime raver. DanceSafe's Richard Hartnell joined Madlon to explore the current state of affairs in the nightlife and festival scene, when it comes to responsible partying, drug policy, and the various ways we can look out for ourselves and each other.    Fentanyl specifically is in the spotlight these days, as an increasing cause of overdose and death among young people. It can be dangerous, but it's also become this catch-all for drug culture. Here we cover what people should know about fentanyl, how prevalent it is, how and when to use narcan - or naloxone - and some of the common misconceptions around it. We invited DanceSafe to guide us through this loaded subject matter, as they're a drug checking, earplug slinging, party servicing nonprofit that was founded on social justice principles. Programs include drug education, sexual health and consent deep-dives, political advocacy, and event outreach.   Presented by c89.5 in partnership with Seattle Children's, Coping 101 is an ongoing series led by students in Nathan Hale High School's Podcast Club. The project destigmatizes mental health from a teen's perspective, and is made possible with support from Friends For Life. No matter our age or background we all face challenges, and there are healthy ways to cope. PAIN: Parents & Addicts in Need's Founder, Flindt Andersen, and Jason LaChance sat down to discuss the controversial topic of long-term Vs short-term harm reduction. This Don't Hide the Scars podcast episode highlights the difficult truth that individuals struggling with drug addiction, especially those using fentanyl, may not prioritize safety measures like fentanyl test strips. It highlights the critical need for harm reduction strategies amidst the opioid crisis. Flindt and Jason dive into the benefits of medication-assisted treatment, but present the side effects of long-term harm reduction medication use. As well, they question why those who achieved their sobriety through abstinence-based recovery would encourage others to use a long-term method that can include never easing use of medications such as methadone or suboxone.
