In many ways, I regard this as my best recording of a chapter from “The American Yawp” yet. I have deleted nothing from the text edited by its editors, Joseph Locke and Ben Wright. Late in his authorial career, in the 1920s to be precise, Arthur Conan Doyle, who was then deeply immersed in beliefs of mysticism and seances, had occasion to pair his rational detective, Sherlock Holmes, with a case about vampires. Did Doyle change the hyper-rational Holmes to suit the author's new beliefs? Listen and find out!
In the course that covers the first half of American History, the chapter on the Sectional Crisis of the Union, also sometimes called “The Impending Crisis,” leading to the American Civil War, is the penultimate such chapter. Next to the magisterial, Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the crisis written by the great historian David Potter, that … Continue reading NEW!
Here is my audio narration of “Colliding Cultures,” a history of European and English colonization of early colonial America, a clash of cultures indeed. This is from the Open Source textbook, “The American Yawp,” free to anyone interested, as we all should be, in American history.
In this epic short story, Arthur Conan Doyle exceeds himself. “The Naval Treaty” is the longest of all of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short stories. It contains allusions to his other stories and many humorous asides as well as quite larger-than-life characters, some almost Dickensian in their strangeness. Holmes has to sift his clues and there … Continue reading NEW! “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of The Naval Treaty:” An Audio Narration by Rick Reiman →

For 40 years, this classic text has taken the issue of economic inequality seriously and asked: Why are our prisons filled with the poor? Why aren't the tools of the criminal justice system being used to protect Americans from predatory business practices and to punish well-off people who cause widespread harm? This new edition continues to engage readers in important exercises of critical thinking: Why has the U.S. relied so heavily on tough crime policies despite evidence of their limited effectiveness, and how much of the decline in crime rates can be attributed to them? Why does the U.S. have such a high crime rate compared to other developed nations, and what could we do about it? Are the morally blameworthy harms of the rich and poor equally translated into criminal laws that protect the public from harms on the streets and harms from the suites? How much class bias is present in the criminal justice system-both when the rich and poor engage in the same act, and when the rich use their leadership of corporations to perpetrate mass victimization? The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison (Routledge, 2023) shows readers that much of what goes on in the criminal justice system violates citizens' sense of basic fairness. It presents extensive evidence from mainstream data that the criminal justice system does not function in the way it says it does nor in the way that readers believe it should. Why aren't the tools of the criminal justice system being used to protect Americans from predatory business practices and to punish well-off people who cause widespread harm? Ep. 753 - With apologies to the Masters, post-draft grades are “a tradition unlike any other.” Which team did well? Which team didn't? Who might be a sleeper pick? Craig Grialou and Zach Gershman react to what the experts are saying about GM Monti Ossenfort's second draft class. Spoiler alert: Monti did very well. The 12 new players won't be on the field for another week - rookie minicamp begins May 10 - so right now everything is a projection. In fact, Zach projects Darius Robinson to begin his pro career as an edge rusher out of the outside linebacker room not the defensive line room. Interesting. Other draft prospects highlighted on the show included offensive lineman Christian Jones (Can he be the team's swing tackle?) and tight end Tip Reiman (Zach shared a funny moment from Reiman's conference call with reporters).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Top Contractor Podcast, hosts Bill Reiman and Nate Swink discussed the importance of good leadership and company culture. They emphasized the need for leaders to set an example and take ownership of any issues that arise, as well as the importance of showing up on time and having a positive attitude. "Leaders need to be the example," said Reiman. "If you're not showing up on time, if you're not taking ownership of issues, if you're not having a positive attitude, then you're not setting the example." The hosts also suggested investing in employees through continuous learning and growth opportunities, and rewarding them for their hard work. They discussed the importance of having core values that all team members share and understand, and how to build a strong team culture through regular team building events and taking employees out to lunch. Finally, they emphasized the importance of setting and maintaining a consistent vision for the company culture, and inspecting what is expected to cultivate a culture of excellence.
