Angela engages in a heartfelt conversation with Sarah Rusbatch, an expert on women's relationships with alcohol. As Sarah shares her journey of over a thousand days of sobriety, they delve into the concept of "grey area drinking," where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. They also highlight the unique challenges women face, including societal pressures, hormonal influences, and the impact of alcohol on mental health and relationships KEY TAKEAWAYS: Grey area drinking refers to a spectrum of alcohol consumption where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. This includes using alcohol for stress relief or social confidence, leading to a reliance that can affect self-esteem and overall well-being. Women are more vulnerable to the health risks associated with alcohol due to physiological differences, such as lower levels of the enzyme that metabolises alcohol. This can lead to increased risks of alcohol-related diseases, including breast cancer, especially as women age and experience hormonal changes. When individuals stop drinking, it can take up to two years for neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine to rebalance after years of alcohol use. This imbalance can lead to increased anxiety and stress, making it crucial to find alternative ways to manage stress and promote relaxation. Stopping alcohol consumption can create social hurdles, as many individuals find themselves in circles of other drinkers. This can lead to feelings of isolation or fear of being perceived as boring. BEST MOMENTS "Gray area drinking describes the place between someone who rarely drinks and someone who has physical dependency." "I believe alcohol keeps women small and it erodes their self-confidence and their self-belief." "You do need somebody. I always say, don't do it alone." "The irony is most people drink alcohol to relieve their stress." In this episode we have Brett who shares a reflective account of his journey with alcohol, starting from his relatively normal, religious upbringing, through to his involvement with a Christian college, in the music industry, and his ever-shifting relationship with alcohol. He talks about the phases of his life where drinking culture was normalized and admits as his career advanced, the pressures increased, leading him to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism. He discusses a period of on-and-off sobriety and his eventual decision to become fully sober. Brett emphasizes that the concept of 'gray area drinking' was a significant factor, contending that many people fall into this middle area on the spectrum of alcohol use. Brett was not having fun anymore consuming alcohol and as much as he wanted to he couldn't stop until he did this is Brett's story on the Sober Motivation podcast. --------------- Connect with Brett on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/breadwilliamsburg/ Sign up for the Addiction Collective Virtual Summit: https://theaddictioncollective.com/ Connect with me here: https://www.instagram.com/sobermotivation/ Donate to support the show here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sobermotivation

Jolene Park joins us this episode to talk about the importance of prioritising the nourishment of your nervous system and neurotransmitters when quitting drinking. Jolene explains why a “bottom up” approach focussing on rewiring, replenishing and repairing the nervous system is vital to the success of drinking less long term. Do you drink to relax, destress, numb anxiety or soothe an activated nervous system (most do!)? Then it is essential to incorporate resources to calm the nervous system into your sober practice. This physiological piece is often overlooked or minimised in favour of cognitive reframing work. It shouldn't be. The good news is, Jolene provides examples of simple and accessible resources that can easily be put into practice by you or your clients. On this episode of the podcast, we have Todd. Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, Todd started drinking alcohol in high school and his consumption escalated throughout college and law school as he used alcohol to cope with stress. Todd would go on the graduate law school and become an attorney and from the outside, it appeared that Todd had cracked the code of life. Todd was a busy father, husband and attorney but his drinking habits from college never left. For years Todd would go back and forth with attempted moderation and was able to take several 90-day breaks from alcohol and this confirmed what he thought at the time if I can go 90 days without alcohol could I have a problem? After the back and forth Todd was in his car one day and was honest with himself the only option left was the quit. 4+ years into the journey Todd shares that every area of his life has improved. This is Todd's story on the Sober Motivation Podcast. ------------------
Trigger warning: alcoholism, addiction Welcome to Episode 102 – Grey Area Drinking with Sarah Rusbatch So many of us struggle with alcohol, but we refrain from admitting it through fear of being labelled an alcoholic. We don't fit the image of a stereotypical “alcoholic” – the guy who has lost everything to his drinking, needs to drink to function, and is sitting on a park bench taking a swig from a bottle in a brown paper bag. This was the case for me; I didn't fit the stereotype. But when I did drink, I didn't have a STOP button. And drinking went from fun to self-medication. But throughout 2023, I've found courage in hearing more and more people embrace a sober life. And then I heard of Grey Area Drinking: the grey area between being able to have the occasional drink and full blown alcoholism. It's the spectrum between being ok with a couple of drinks, to creating rules to justify our drinking, to getting drunk way too often. Helping us unpack this topic is Grey Area Drinking coach Sarah Rusbatch. Sarah is an ex-Grey Area Drinker, and shares her story to inspire others out there to quit the booze and live their best life. In this episode, Sarah shares: What grey area drinking is Social pressures to drink and how this impacts getting sober Why a lot of people resist the term alcoholic and how that influences their drinking decisions Her story of grey area drinking and how it became a problem for her The rules she put in place to justify her drinking The process she went through to redesign her social circles What her husband did when she stopped drinking Her opinion on replacing alcohol with other options The difference between grey area drinking coaching and alcoholics anonymous The strategies and tools she offers her clients Key Quotes: "Did I think I had a problem with alcohol? No I had a problem and alcohol was my solution.” "Alcohol is the only drug we have to justify not taking.” "It's so hard in an alcohol centric society to take a break from alcohol” "If we are taking alcohol out, what are we putting in?" Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. Across the world, and particularly in Ireland, many people have a complex relationship with alcohol. It's a powerful substance and we can often underestimate the impact it is having on our relationships, our mind and our general wellbeing. This week, Niall is joined by psychotherapist, educator and coach Amanda Grace. Amanda does not identify as an alcoholic, but in 2017 decided to pursue sobriety from her place of ‘grey area drinking'. Two years after the loss of her wonderful and hilarious Dad, comedian Brendan Grace, Amanda had a breakdown and almost relapsed. However, she has persevered and now openly shares her experience of grey area drinking and the devastating impact it can have on a person's sense of dignity, self worth & their mental health. Niall and Amanda discuss how affected they were by the news of Sinead O'Connor's passing, how Amanda's breakout of grey area drinking has changed her perspective on her self worth and relationships and how grieving her father alongside the public was both beautiful and difficult. In this compelling episode, we delve into the inspiring work of Faye Lawrence and the transformative movement she spearheads through Untoxicated. Fuelled by a deep understanding that problem drinking and addiction are health issues, not personal failings, Faye challenges the societal norms and stigma surrounding alcohol use.Having been a heavy but high functioning drinker since her teens, Faye wound up in inpatient detox in late 2017 after the wheels really fell off. Determined not to let her sobriety ruin her social life she founded Untoxicated, now Australia's largest alcohol-free social community. She is a TEDx speaker, co-author and has featured widely across media with a mission to normalise living with less or no alcohol in a culture that reveres it. With a lifelong fascination in human behaviour, she holds a degree in psychology, is a certified Grey Area Drinking coach and is currently undertaking a Master of Counselling. A portfolio careerist, she's also a marketing, communications, and engagement consultant and has worked extensively with disability and community service organisations across Australia. Faye is passionate about using her lived experience of intergenerational addiction to advocate for the reduction of stigma to improve outcomes, and is a SMART Recovery Australia Board Member. In her spare time, she loves nothing more than hanging out with her two adult daughters and badly behaved Bengal cat. Alcohol has long served as a salve for dealing with trauma, chronic stress, isolation, and mental health issues. It permeates our lives, from celebrations to commiserations, bonding moments, and moments of relaxation. However, when the product ultimately leads to dependence, society often responds with condemnation and shame, hindering individuals from seeking help until personal costs become significant for themselves and those around them. Ironically, those who choose not to drink, whether in recovery or by personal preference, also face stigmatization and exclusion, leaving them feeling abnormal and left out. It's a lose-lose situation that perpetuates negative social pressures and stereotypes. Untoxicated aims to break this cycle. Research reveals that alcohol is the only drug for which approval of regular use outweighs disapproval, creating significant pressure to drink. This pressure leads to social avoidance, succumbing to peer pressure, and relapses. Yet, despite its widespread use, the health impacts and societal costs of alcohol far outweigh those of illicit drugs. Untoxicated is not advocating for everyone to give up alcohol. The movement believes in less judgment and more acceptance. Instead, it strives to create an environment where individuals can choose to give up or reduce their alcohol consumption without fear of judgment or isolation. Acceptance is the key. Through Untoxicated, people who don't drink, regardless of their reasons, find a sense of belonging, connection, and the affirmation that their choices are normal. The movement aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions earlier, demonstrating the possibilities of a life without alcohol or with reduced consumption, rather than waiting until they hit rock bottom. Untoxicated recognizes the importance of supporting those who seek lifestyle changes and providing them with the best chances of success. By doing so, individuals, their families, relationships, and communities can flourish, free from the damaging effects of alcohol.Join us as we explore Faye Lawrence's incredible vision and the founding principles of Together, let's challenge the status quo, redefine stigma, foster acceptance, and create a world where choices regarding alcohol are celebrated, understood, and respected.Link tSupport the showLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com

Community is the foundation of recovery. We don't recover alone! But the ideas you're exposed to in early sobriety have significant impact on your recovery. Labeling yourself as an "alcoholic" and committing to lifetime abstinence can increase your chance of relapse into alcohol use disorder. Ask someone who has what you want how they got it is good advice. But if you're human, what you want will evolve over time in response to what you need. Giving yourself permission to change—not just how you drink but also how you think—allows you to grow into the person you are meant to become. In this episode, I unpack the reasons I chose to opt out of the fear-based, one-size-fits-all approach to sobriety. And how I'm managing my recovery with emotional sobriety. Because my identity and my future are no longer defined by alcohol. Want to learn more about The Next Chapter? Click here. Like this episode? The morning Sarah Rusbatch realised that her relationship with alcohol needed to change, she woke up in blood stained bed sheets with her 5 year old daughter peering at her face asking her what had happened. This sounds like an extreme story, but Sarah says that her relationship with alcohol would be familiar to SO many of us. BUT the night before she'd been at a 40th birthday party where the wine was flowing, she'd nipped outside for a cigarette and when she reached down to stub it out, she toppled over her heels and landed face first on the concrete. I'm sure you have a similar story - one where a few two many drinks has left you feeling anxious & embarrassed. I know I do. Sarah says that morning left her with an overwhelming feeling that there was another way of living. In 2019 she quit booze completely & is now an accredited Grey Area Drinking Coach. Whitney Durmick is author of Half Wild: A prayer for a generation of roaming malcontents. The book takes an uncompromising look at her self-destructive behavior as she lovingly untangles herself from the throes of anxiety, addiction and loneliness. Using excerpts from the book, Whitney and I unpack the emotional disconnect that has haunted her since childhood (me too!). Moving around a lot, Whitney became very adaptable--able to fit in wherever she was. But that skill left her feeling untethered as she molded her personality into the most-liked version. Little girls are not taught how to interpret the shame that occurs naturally in our developing bodies. So we grow up assuming that uncomfortable emotions mean something is wrong with us. Y'all--this is my first interview with a famous quit-lit author. I hope you enjoy this vulnerable, indepth conversation about what it means to be female and also what it means to recover. Trigger warning: If you're happy identifying as a "sober" alcoholic, this episode is not for you. Does promising to stay sober for the rest of your life conflict with your values? Are you an independent thinker who enjoys staying open to new ideas? Todays episode is a practice run of my new webinar, Why women who identify as alcoholics and therefore "sober" can struggle in recovery. There is strong evidence that labeling people as alcoholics and setting abstinence as a life-long requirement keep them from entering and staying in recovery. I explain how to escape your preoccupation with alcohol–instead of defining yourself by it forever. Want to learn more about The Next Chapter, my 12-week mastermind in emotional sobriety? Click here. Jolene is a leading authority on Grey-Area Drinking, a TED talk speaker, functional nutritionist and health coach who coaches private clients and also trains healthcare practitioners on the importance of nourishing neurotransmitters and supporting their client's nervous system.Jolene's website: https://grayareadrinkers.comJolene's instagram handle: @jolene__parkMegan Webb: https://glassfulfilled.com.auInstagram: @glassfulfilledIsabella Ferguson: https://isabellaferguson.com.auInstagram: @alcoholandstresswithisabellaInstagram: @kidsandalcohol
Are you someone that values your sleep? Or are you a parent who day dreams about nights that you 'slept through' or had a 'lie in'?! Whichever you count yourself as - alcohol will be playing a role in affecting your sleep. No matter how much or how little you drink... In fact, not only will alcohol affect the quality of your sleep - it also plays an integral role to your sobriety and your avoidance of a relapse. If you ask 1000 newly sober people what benefits they have felt in the early days of giving up the grog - we would guess that almost all of them would mention better sleep! In today's episode Hame and Vic take a deeper look into the science of sleep and its importance to our mental and physical health. We certainly aren't scientists but we can confirm we are far nicer people to be around after a good nights sleep. We do not miss the room spinning, the loo seat naps or the 3am wake ups feeling wide awake and unable to get back down. We also binge on a lot less chocolate and a little less Netflix when we aren't feeling exhausted and hungover. (We promise that this will not be as boring as most of the conversations two parents have about sleep! Although we have had many conversations like this dull enough to put us to sleep so ... silver linings and all that!) Enjoy the episode!
