My guest today is Dr. Hector — a psychiatrist who specializes in helping people heal from addiction, PTSD, anxiety, and depression through a trauma-informed approach. He blends neuroscience, medication, and therapy with nutrition and lifestyle tools to support whole-person healing.    What I love about his work is that it's not just clinical — it's deeply compassionate. He helps people understand how their brain and body work together so they can build resilience, recover from addiction, and truly heal from the inside out.   He shares why most people relapse not because of willpower, but because trauma remains unresolved. From the role of GABA in calming the nervous system to how EMDR helps reprocess trauma, this episode is packed with practical tools and compassionate wisdom for anyone on the healing path.   Before we jump in, I have a new segment, called “A question for you!” Today I want to know how you feel about the word “Alcoholic”.    I was interviewed on another podcast today and the host told me he thought it was a shame label. If you know me even a little bit, you'll know that the way I define it - it's a badge of honor, but also, it doesn't matter to me what you call yourself, as long as you get the support you need to heal and break free from addiction. So what do you think? Leave your comment under this episode at odaatchat.com Or leave a comment on my Instagram: @arlinaallen Next week I'll share some of your responses! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out. And with that, please enjoy this episode with Dr Hector. Guest Contact Info: doctorhector.com

Dave opens this Tuesday Dopey Patreon teaser by reflecting on feeling burnt out, upcoming dental implant surgery, and the need to slow down. He jokes about “cultivating illness” to get rest and shares his current obsession with the Martin Scorsese documentary series Mr. Scorsese, hoping listeners will “pray and manifest” Scorsese appearing on Dopey. He talks about Scorsese's film legacy, calling Goodfellas untouchable.Dave reads a Spotify comment from Emma about a pork ad and debates if it's anti-Semitic, then begins a new segment reading from Miles Davis's autobiography — a vivid story about Charlie Parker pawning Miles's belongings for heroin.Next, longtime Dopey Nation member Selby calls in with a story about getting through TSA with weed gummies and ends with “stay strong, Dopey Nation, and fucking toodles for Chris.” Dave laughs about TSA searches, harmonicas being mistaken for weapons, and promises either to play harmonica on the road or stop traveling with it.The teaser transitions into the Patreon preview with Ray Brown and Dave's dad, where a discussion about politics erupts — his dad talks about kindness, empathy, immigration, and frustration with leadership. Dave tries to steer it back but ends up apologizing for the tangent. The teaser closes with Dave's song “I Wanna Be Good So Bad,” a raw, humorous original with lyrics about bad desire, frustration, calling his dad, and seeking peace and love.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this eye-opening episode of Fishing Without Bait, host Jim Ellermeyer is joined once again by producer Mike Sorg to explore how modern media shapes our identities, fuels our purchases, and even distorts our sense of self-worth. From emotional manipulation in advertising to influencer culture and data-driven targeting, Jim and Mike unpack the psychological tactics behind today's media and tech. How does a Power Glove from the '80s connect to the viral influencer culture of today? Are we in control of our choices—or are we reacting without realizing it? In this episode: • Why media makes us feel “less than” • Celebrity endorsements vs. authentic influence • Targeted ads, data mining, and algorithmic persuasion • Unrealistic expectations and identity loss in the digital age • The mental health toll of comparison culture • What it really means to be unmanageable • Mindful practices to resist manipulation “It's much easier to fool someone than to convince them they're being fooled.” Take a breath. Check the facts. And most importantly—remember who you are.

Stephen Matos, a person in long-term recovery, joins TJ on the Recovery Matters podcast to share his incredible journey since his last use of drugs and alcohol in 1986 and his last gambling experience in 1987. Stephen opens up about his upbringing in Hartford, Connecticut, where his father was deeply entrenched in gambling activities. He recounts how his own descent into alcohol, drugs, and gambling almost destroyed his life, leading to broken relationships and financial ruin. However, recovery came through Gamblers Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and intensive outpatient programs. Stephen highlights his role as a peer counselor in Connecticut's exemplary problem gambling treatment programs, underscoring the importance of lived experience in offering hope and support to others. His narrative also sheds light on the stigma surrounding gambling addiction and the critical need for comprehensive treatment and recovery resources.00:00 Introduction and Host Backgrounds00:36 Growing Up with a Gambling Father04:51 Early Exposure to Alcohol and Drugs06:59 The Impact of Gambling on Relationships09:58 Descent into Addiction16:15 Turning Point and Seeking Help18:30 Recovery Journey and Support Systems21:51 The Journey of Recovery21:58 Managing Money and Responsibilities22:24 The Role of AA and GA in Recovery22:48 Strained Relationship with Father23:24 Making Amends and Financial Accountability23:52 Mending the Relationship with Father24:27 A New Chapter: Becoming a Peer Counselor25:06 Training and Embracing Multiple Pathways of Recovery25:58 Working with Problem Gamblers and Their Families27:58 Connecticut's Leading Gambling Treatment Programs29:37 The Importance of Lived Experience in Recovery33:03 Helpline and Support Resources35:20 Advice for Newcomers in Recovery36:48 Addressing Stigma and Shame in Gambling Addiction41:05 Concluding Thoughts and Gratitude  ----Across the Web----

This week, we are re-releasing one of Redesigning Life's most well-received and downloaded episodes... Holly Whitaker : Quit Like A WomenHave you ever wondered why we reach for a drink during life's highest moments and lowest lows? Why does alcohol seem essential to celebrating a wedding, mourning a loss, or simply getting through a Tuesday? In this illuminating conversation with Holly Whitaker, author of "Quit Like a Woman", we explore the complex relationship many of us have with alcohol and how it might be affecting more than we realize. Holly shares her personal journey from someone who used alcohol, cigarettes, and food to "ruin herself and clean herself up" repeatedly to discovering a path toward genuine fulfillment without substances. What makes this discussion particularly powerful is the science Holly brings to the table. She explains how alcohol hijacks our dopamine system, making it difficult to experience pleasure from everyday activities and creating a false association between drinking and fun. "Alcohol doesn't actually produce fun," Holly reveals. "Fun things produce fun." This insight challenges the cultural narrative that positions alcohol as the essential ingredient for enjoyment.Beyond the science, Holly offers practical wisdom for anyone questioning their relationship with alcohol. Rather than advocating for an all-or-nothing approach, she emphasizes the power of subtle shifts in awareness and intention. By simply allowing yourself to notice alcohol's effects on your mood, sleep, and anxiety levels, you begin creating space for change.Whether you're sober curious, actively changing your relationship with alcohol, or simply interested in understanding its effects better, this episode offers thoughtful perspectives without judgment. As Holly reminds us, when we release what no longer serves us... whether it's alcohol, toxic relationships, or limiting beliefs, we create space for something better to arrive. What might be waiting on the other side of that glass for you? Listen in and consider what consciousness over cocktails could bring to your life.Holly's Website: https://www.hollywhitaker.com/Holly's Podcast: Co-RegulationHolly's book: QUIT LIKE A WOMANHolly's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollyConnect with Sabrina:https://www.instagram.com/Sabrina_Soto/www.SabrinaSoto.com

Send us a textAfter years of chasing external definitions of success, I've completely transformed the Successful Life Podcast to focus on what truly matters: recovery from addiction, freedom from limiting habits, and authentic personal growth. This isn't about how much we can achieve or how much money we make—it's about waking up clear-headed, staying emotionally regulated, and building a life of integrity. My own journey has been marked by struggles with addiction, wearing different masks for different people, and pretending everything was fine when it wasn't. Though I quit drinking nearly 16 years ago, I switched to cannabis until March 2023. Today, two years fully sober, I've discovered practices that genuinely move the needle in my life: rising at 3:45 am when my brain functions optimally, daily gym sessions, ice baths that reset my nervous system, and a carnivore diet that's dramatically improved my mental clarity and physical health. The carnivore approach—eating only meat, eggs, and cheese—has transformed my energy, eliminated my need for ADHD medication, and helped me shed 12 pounds to reach 8% body fat. But the physical benefits pale compared to the mental clarity and emotional stability I've gained. When combined with recovery principles and consistent self-discipline, this lifestyle has allowed me to show up authentically for myself, my family, and my team at work.If you're struggling with addiction, poor habits, or feeling lost, know that transformation is possible. As they say in recovery, "You don't walk ten miles into the woods and get out in two"—healing takes time, but it begins with a single step today. Join me weekly as we explore what truly creates a successful life with upcoming guests including bodybuilder Tony Freeman and Jared the Plumber.
