ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jul 28, 2020 Chris and Dave from the Mandatory OT and IWW join Breht to cover the fascinating and crucially important history of the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in American history and the largest armed uprising in America since the Civil War. In this powerful episode, we dive deep into the largest labor uprising in U.S. history—the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain. This was no metaphorical struggle: 10,000 coal miners, armed and organized, rose up against brutal exploitation, corporate tyranny, and state violence in the heart of Appalachia. It's a story of working-class militancy, raw courage, and revolutionary spirit—one deliberately buried and whitewashed by history. We bring it back to light. On January 1, 1994, masked indigenous rebels burst from the rainforest in Chiapas, Mexico to launch an uprising that was years in the making. The Zapatista Army declared war on the Mexican Government demanding basics rights for the diverse Mayan communities who lived in extreme poverty through out the region. The rebellion, which captured the world's attention thanks in part to the Zapatista's charismatic leader, coincided with the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement and was disastrous for Mexican President Carlos Salinas who had promised his trade partners that Mexico was a modern, peaceful democratic country. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we bring you an episode from Inheriting Season One. Inheriting is a show about Asian American and Pacific Islander families, which explores how one event in history can ripple through generations. Carol Kwang Park was 12 years old, working as a cashier at her family's gas station in Compton, California, when the 1992 L.A. Uprising forever changed her life. Her mom was at the gas station that day and Carol was unsure if she'd even make it home. At the time, she didn't understand why tensions came to a head in Los Angeles, following the acquittal of the officers who beat Rodney King. She also never understood why her mother insisted on keeping the business going, especially after the Uprising. As an adult, a personal crisis prompts Carol to finally start processing that event and her place in history. Content Warning: This episode contains racial slurs and discusses police brutality. If you want to learn more about any of the historical moments we talk about on our show, visit our website: LAist.com/Inheriting
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we bring you an episode from Inheriting Season One. Inheriting is a show about Asian American and Pacific Islander families, which explores how one event in history can ripple through generations. In part two of Carol Kwang Park’s story, we follow Carol’s journey to connect more deeply with her family – and introduce the family-led conversations that are central to Inheriting. Decades after the 1992 LA Uprising, Carol finally learns what her mom experienced during the riots and how she made it back home. It allows for a better understanding of her mother, as well as her family’s journey leading up to the Uprising – which she never had as a child. For the first time, Carol also talks to her brother, Albert Park, about what it was like to work at the gas station as kids, especially around the time of the Uprising. Yumna Patel speaks with Kei Pritsker, journalist at BreakThrough News and co-director of The Encampments — a powerful new documentary chronicling the peaceful student-led movement for Palestine in response to Israel's genocide in Gaza. Co-directed with Michael Workman and produced by BreakThrough News and Watermelon Pictures, the film offers an embedded look at the nonviolent protest that began at Columbia University and spread to more than 100 campuses across the U.S. In April 2024, Columbia students set up an encampment demanding the university divest from companies complicit in Israel's assault on Gaza. Within days, riot police stormed the campus, arresting over 100 students — sparking a nationwide wave of encampments and escalating repression under then President Biden. The backlash was swift. Universities cracked down, police raided campuses, and media figures smeared students as radicals to deflect attention from the atrocities they were protesting against. The film follows organizers like Mahmoud Khalil, whose arrest by ICE under President Trump's “Catch and Revoke” crackdown prompted the filmmakers to accelerate its release. Through months of on-the-ground footage, The Encampments captures not only the political urgency of what many are calling the student intifada, but a broader generational call to resist empire, genocide, and complicity. Students connected Palestine to climate justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and global anti-colonial movements — declaring, simply: Palestine is everywhere. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Directors Michael T. Workman and Kei Pritsker join Breht to discuss The Encampments, their award-winning new documentary chronicling the 2024 student-led pro-Palestinian uprisings at Columbia, UCLA, and beyond. We talk about the ethical challenges of filming, the fascist state repression faced by people who speak out against Israel, the story of Mahmoud Khalil's ICE detention and its relationship to the film, this film as revolutionary cultural production and political education, the universities dereliction of duty in keeping their students safe from violent zionist thugs, and the film's role as a tool for organizers. With campuses - and society - under a reactionary crackdown and solidarity rising, this episode explores how cinema, student resistance, and revolutionary struggle converge in the fight for Palestinian liberation. Send us a textApril 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the #BaltimoreUprising, a series of protests sparked by Freddie Gray's death in Baltimore Police custody in 2015.Baltimore has long reflected America's racial and political anxieties, making the Uprising a frequent subject of academic analysis. In this episode, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle's Lawrence Grandpre and Dayvon Love critique two books: Beyond Black Lives Matter by Cedric Johnson and Invisible Weapons by Marcus Board Jr.While Johnson critiques BLM and Board affirms it, both argue that Baltimore's working-class grassroots were misled by neoliberalism, rendering their responses to Freddie Gray ineffective. This view overlooks successful grassroots political interventions by groups like LBS, which led protests during the Uprising and continues to advance community-driven agendas. By oversimplifying Black identity as manipulation by elites—whether through neoliberalism (Johnson) or patriarchy (Board)—both books fail to capture the political and ideological complexity of Baltimore's working-class Black communities. They also neglect to examine how academic detachment can distort analyses of Baltimore, Black life, and Black politics.Support the showIn Search of Black Power is a Black-owned internet show and podcast. As we've mentioned many times before on the show, movements today are a part of a legacy of extraordinary actions taken by ordinary people. Tapping into our own labor history provides us with a blueprint for action in today's turbulent world. On March 25th, 1911, a fire began in the scrap bins under a cutter's table on the 8th floor of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. Within minutes, the entire floor was engulfed in flames, spreading to the ninth floor and 10th floors–where 200+ workers were just finishing up to go home for the night. By the time workers were alerted to the conflagration, options for escaping the fire were few. By the time the fire was brought under control, 146 workers were dead. New York City saw sweeping reforms in the aftermath of the fire, catapulting some pro-reform lobbyists like Francis Perkins all the way to the highest halls of government with the introduction of the New Deal 20 years later. Near the 114th anniversary of this tragedy, Mel sat down with labor historian Dr. Erik Loomis, professor at the University of Rhode Island and author of his forthcoming book, “Organizing America: Stories of Americans Who Fought for Justice” to talk about the struggle for better working conditions in the garment industry in New York City, the fire itself and the reforms enacted afterwards, and why it's important to learn from our own labor history in this current moment. He warns about misleading hydrogen products, particularly hydrogen tablets, which may contain harmful compounds and alter water's pH in undesirable ways.Despite promising results and increasing research, molecular hydrogen therapy remains relatively unknown in mainstream healthcare. Greg noted that Japan has integrated hydrogen therapy into medical practice, while in the U.S., financial interests and misinformation may be slowing its adoption. Hydrogen is significantly smaller than other antioxidants, allowing it to reach deep into the mitochondria and every part of the body where other antioxidants cannot. This makes it particularly effective in combating oxidative stress linked to inflammation and various diseases.QUOTES:(11:08) “It's important to use hydrogen properly because it needs to be safe, but you want it to be effective. So we want it to work.” Greg the Hydrogen Man(21:41) “We don't realize the value of our health until it's jeopardized. Right? And then we realize how little these other things matter.” Jenn Trepeck(36:27) “They put hydrogen there because they had already seen that it was having a positive effect on all these medical conditions.” Greg the Hydrogen Man(37:26) “Inflammation is essentially the source of all sickness, illness, disease. It is oxidative stress, like the rusting of our insides.” Jenn Trepeck(40:04) “Hydrogen is the most abundant element.” Jenn Trepeck(48:51) “When we can increase the nutrient density and the way nutrients reach the different body parts, there's so much possibility.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramBiostack Over BiohackBecome a Member to Receive 10% Discount off H2 TabsNutrition Nugget: AntioxidantsWhat's Your Biological AgeGUEST RESOURCES:Uprising144K Hydrogen Man - PodcastGreg Hman - InstagramHoly Hydrogen Machine - WebsiteMy Pure Water - Carbon Distiller - WebsiteGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Greg the Hydrogen Man is a molecular hydrogen therapy specialist, researcher, and host of the popular YouTube channel Uprising144K.
