For three years following the Russian Revolution, the small South Caucasian country of Georgia was a democracy, but Stalin later ordered the Red Army to invade and to bring the country back under Russian rule. Communist attacks on political opponents, trade unions, cooperatives, and even the church sparked resistance, and an armed uprising broke out across the nation in 1924. It was swiftly crushed, with massacres of thousands, including hostages. Social Democratic and Labor parties across Europe reacted with shock and indignation. Soviet opponents began to describe communism as “red fascism” and their own movement as “democratic socialism.” What followed—including Socialist support for the creation of NATO—resulted from the Georgian uprising and its aftermath. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine a century later, the long-forgotten Georgian experience examined in The August Uprising, 1924: The Georgian Anti-Soviet Revolt and the Birth of Democratic Socialism (McFarland, 2025) seems more relevant than ever. The early November state and local elections held in the United State are part of a broader global wave of resistance to rising inequality and predatory government. From Tanzania and Madagascar to Bangladesh and Nepal, popular uprisings have triggered sudden changes in governments—or threatened to do so. In the United States, this week's results reflect popular and voter response to deepening inequities and the widely unpopular policies of a Trump administration serving as a delivery system for long-desired hard-right initiatives backed by billionaires, think tanks, assorted neofascists and a deeply diseducated voting base mobilized and deployed through fear and manipulation of racial division and cultural grievance. In the aftermath of political shifts—large and small—people engaged in struggle, whether through elections, popular mobilization, or both, understandably take “victory laps,” in the wake of what appear to be watershed moments. These celebrations are often followed by policymaking disappointments, followed by renewed calls to stay committed to the longer fight, typically through deploying the same tactics that produced the incremental victories. In the late 1700s, Indigenous peoples in the Spanish colonies of the Andes were forced to work for the Spanish. They tilled the land, worked in the textile mills and the mines. Those that didn't faced heavy taxes. But in early November 1780, Indigenous Incan leader Tupac Amaru II led an uprising against the Spanish that he hoped would end it all.It was the largest revolt against colonial Spain. Thousands would join the months-long rebellion. It would inspire uprisings elsewhere across the continent, and independence leaders. South America would gain its freedom from Spain just 40 years later.BIG NEWS! This podcast has won Gold in this year's Signal Awards for best history podcast! It's a huge honor. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising (Harper, 2025), Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. They include:Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina"Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprisingDr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercyTema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern EuropeTossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside worldInterspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. Elizabeth Hyman is the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States. In 1909, a 23-year-old immigrant named Clara Lemlich stood up in New York's Cooper Union and said, "I have no more patience for talk—I move that we go on a general strike." The next morning, 20,000 garment workers—mostly young immigrant women—walked off the job. Their courage changed labor history forever. Tune into our latest episode to hear how their fight reshaped workers' rights for generations. --- Music from today's episode is by: Tar Sahno and Semion Krivenko-Adamo Sources: Jewish Women's Archive, "Uprising of 20,000 (1909)." A basement bar. A drag queen with fire in her veins. And an attack turned counterattack.Long before Stonewall, one night in Milwaukee changed everything. It was 1961 when the Black Nite, a hidden queer bar downtown, became the site of a violent confrontation that would ignite the city's first gay uprising. At the center stood Josie Carter, a fearless Black trans woman and performer who refused to back down when outsiders stormed the club. What followed was chaos, resistance, and a moment of defiance that history almost forgot. In this episode, we dive into the night Milwaukee's queer community fought back, decades before the world was ready to listen. This is a story of courage, identity, and survival in the face of hate. Hosted by Jordi and Brad, Beers With Queers brings chilling crimes, queer stories, and twisted justice to light—all with a cold one in hand.Press play, grab a drink, and join us as we uncover the darkest corners of LGBTQ+ history.

What do Stalin, Trump, and Viktor Orbán have in common? They're all fragile men terrified of truth, artists, and of anyone with a moral compass. In this week's Gaslit Nation, we talk with 91-year-old Peter Hidas, who as a young student helped ignite the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, a movement born of courage and faith in a better world. Peter's story is a testament to what ordinary people can do when they refuse to bow to tyranny. The revolts that shook the Iron Curtain in 1956 laid the groundwork for the movements that would one day bring down the Soviet empire, to the unforgettable soundtrack of Swan Lake played on repeat on Soviet TV by a collapsing regime. Today, a new generation of brave Russians has reclaimed that symbol: the “Swan Lake Collective” is being played by artists on the streets of Russia, creating a rallying cry “Let the swans dance!” for peace, freedom, and the end of Putin's Fox News–style dictatorship. Gaslit Nation is here to remind you that Putin's days are numbered. This week's show also celebrates the heroes of the No Kings protests, the Gen Z meme pirates toppling corruption crime sprees pretending to be governments, how Trump and Putin might try to save Orban's doomed April 2026 election, and more. So keep marching. Keep creating. That's how we win. The song featured in this week's episode is “Election Day” by The Spiders. 8. The Tishreen Uprising and Call for Accountability By 2019, kleptocratic party bosses and militia commanders siphoned $20 billion annually, causing unemployment despite oil wealth, with youth seeing corruption as biggest threat. Tishreen Uprising was rare trans-sectarian moment protesting elite corruption, including poor Shia denouncing Shia clergy, with women playing major roles. Though brutally suppressed with hundreds dead, "spirit of Tishreen" remains, but fundamental problem after 20 years is lack of accountability for those who perpetrated war and invasion. Retry

"Gen Z" Uprising In Nepal Then, an interview that I conducted with Anarcho, a member of the Black Book Distro collective out of Kathmandu, Nepal, about the protests and aftermath of the September 2025 “Gen Z” anti-corruption protests that ousted the prime minister, released prisoners and left the parliament in smoldering ruins. Because we don't follow a strict chronology of events, we're including a few articles linked in our show notes for further study. We worked heavily off the interview with members of the Black Book Distro and CrimethInc, which is among those in our show notes. https://www.anarchistcommunism.org/2025/09/13/nepal-a-grassroots-uprising/ https://organisemagazine.org.uk/2025/09/09/nepal-communications-international/ http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2009/12/anarchism-in-nepal-2006-2009.html https://www.gofundme.com/f/black-book-distro-anarchist-library-in-nepal https://kathmandupost.com/columns/2025/09/15/welcome-to-the-eros-effect-gen-z https://open.spotify.com/episode/464iPIxwdVLT3BVLoepsKj https://crimethinc.com/2025/09/22/nepali-anarchists-on-the-toppling-of-the-government-an-interview-with-black-book-distro . ... . .. In this episode of our American Catholic History series, we explore the dramatic rise and lasting impact of Anti-Masonry in the early United States. The strange and haunting story of William Morgan's disappearance in 1826 set off a political wildfire, leading to the creation of the Anti-Masonic Party, the nation’s first third party. We’ll trace how this populist movement emerged out of fear of secret societies, clashed with Catholic ideas, and became a launching pad for major figures like William Wirt, Millard Fillmore, Thaddeus Stevens, and William Seward. Though Catholics and Anti-Masons shared deep suspicions about Freemasonry, their goals and values rarely aligned.#CatholicHistory #AntiMasonry #Freemasonry #AmericanHistory #SecretSocieties #Masons #WilliamMorgan #KnowNothingParty #CatholicPodcast #HistoryPodcast #AmericanCatholicism Support the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback?
