In early September 2025, Nepal witnessed an extraordinary week of upheaval that many now refer to as the ‘five-day revolution'. Within the span of a single week, youth-led ‘Gen Z' protests spread across Kathmandu and other major cities, the prime minister and his government resigned, the army intervened, parliament was dissolved, and Nepal's new (and first female) interim prime minister was sworn in. The events revealed deep frustrations among young Nepalis with corruption, socioeconomic exclusion, and a lack of political accountability. In this episode of the Nordic Asia Podcast, Dr. Jeevan Baniya joins host Hanna Geschewski to explore the deeper forces behind this moment. They discuss the grievances that brought young Nepalis to the streets, why these long-standing frustrations erupted now, and how the ‘Gen Z' protests should be understood in relation to questions of representation and political change. The conversation also considers the diversity within Nepal's youth movement and the pathways through which young people may shape politics in the aftermath of the uprising. Jeevan Baniya is a political scientist and Deputy Director of the research institute Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal. Hanna Geschewski is a PhD researcher in Human Geography at the Chr. In Nepal's case, it was the suspension of several popular social networks – but the anger ran much deeper.

This episode is the first installment of a new series entitled Podcasting African Democracy. It was recorded on August 5th, 2025. In this episode, we speak with Wairimu Gathimba — writer, researcher, and longtime organizer within Kenya's social justice movement — about the mass protests that erupted in June 2025 following the commemoration of the 2024 controversial Finance Bill protest. From Nairobi to Kisumu, thousands of young Kenyans took to the streets, demanding transparency, accountability, and relief from crushing economic burdens. Wairimu breaks down the political stakes of the tax bill, the decentralized nature of the movement, and the role of digital mobilization in shaping a new era of civic resistance. We also explore the generational dynamics at play, the risks faced by protesters, and what this moment reveals about the future of Pan-African organizing. This is not just a story about taxes — it's about reclaiming democracy, redefining leadership, and resisting austerity in a time of global economic pressure.   Co-host: Luccas Perez Editor(s): Luccas Perez

Since 1951, when Tibet was formally annexed into the People's Republic of China, Tibet has been a battleground between China's efforts to assert control and the Tibetan people's struggle to preserve their cultural and religious identity. This past August, Xi Jinping made a surprise visit to Tibet, his second since becoming China's top leader in 2012. Less than two months earlier, the Dalai Lama, now 90 years old, announced that his office, not China, would choose his successor when he passes. A few months before that, the Dalai Lama revealed in a memoir that he would reincarnate outside of China. The PRC insists that the next incarnation – the 15th Dalai Lama – will be born inside PRC territory and approved by the Chinese government. What are Beijing's interests in Tibet and how has Xi Jinping pursued them since coming to power? This segment discusses a "war" being waged on platforms like X against major corporations, including Microsoft, for their alleged misuse of the H-1B visa program. The hosts claim that Microsoft recently laid off thousands of American engineers, only to immediately list the same jobs for foreign workers on H-1B visas at lower wages. They argue this is part of a system where companies use the visa program to replace American workers with "indentured servants" who are beholden to their employers. The conversation highlights how online activists and citizens are fighting back by publicly identifying these job listings and flooding them with applications, a move that legally complicates the visa process. The hosts also point to political figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Steve Bannon, who are reportedly pressuring the current administration to reform the H-1B program, arguing that it is harming American workers and is a "scam" that primarily benefits large corporations and the Democratic Party.

The German Democratic Republic has come to stand as a symbol of communist tyranny, a source of Cold War nostalgia and socialist kitsch, and a failed alternative to the worst excesses of 21st century capitalism. In this book, Ned Richardson-Little delves into the central contradictions of the GDR state: This book illustrates the fault lines of GDR society, the worldviews and experiences of not only those who ruled the GDR, but also those who rebelled against the strictures of state socialism, and those in between who sought a normal life under dictatorship. The German Democratic Republic: The Rise and Fall of a Cold War State (Bloomsbury, 2025) is a succinct and comprehensive history of East Germany that traces its story from the country's origins as the Soviet Zone of Occupation after World War II through key events such as the 1953 Uprising, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Helsinki Accords, and the collapse of state socialism in 1989. Some of the themes explored include the memory of Nazism and national identity, everyday life under dictatorship, including consumerism, sexuality, and racism, the global politics of the GDR, the diversity of dissenting voices, and the competing visions for East Germany's democratic future. Guest: Ned Richardson-Little (he/him) is a Research Fellow in Department V: Globalizations in a Divided World at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF), in Germany. He is a historian of modern Germany, with a focus on the GDR, socialism, far-right extremism, and the history of international law and international crime. He is the author of The Human Rights Dictatorship: Socialism, Global Solidarity and Revolution in East Germany (2020), and co-editor of Socialism and International Law (2024).
