Send us a textIn the summer of 1967, Detroit was already burning when a far quieter tragedy unfolded behind the doors of the Algiers Motel. As the city reeled from six days of unrest, three young Black men—Carl Cooper, Auburey Pollard, and Fred Temple—were detained, terrorized, and killed during a police raid that would later become one of the most disturbing chapters of the Detroit Uprising. In this milestone 100th episode of Curator135, we explore what led Detroit to the brink, how the uprising began, and what happened inside the Algiers Motel that night. We examine survivor testimony, the failed prosecutions that followed, and how the justice system ultimately left families without answers. But this episode is also about what came after. About a city shaped by fire, injustice, and loss—and one that refused to disappear. From population collapse and decades of disinvestment to the resilience, revival, and renewed energy seen today, Detroit's story is more than its worst moment. This is a story about memory, accountability, and survival. And about why some histories demand to be remembered.Support the show

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. An Iranian official said this morning that authorities verified at least 5,000 people had been killed in protests in Iran, including about 500 security personnel, since December 28. According to a Sunday Times report citing an account put together by a network of Iranian doctors, the toll is more than 16,500 dead -- most under 30 -- and at least 330,000 people injured. Berman delves into the conflicting reports and updates us on what US President Donald Trump said Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet on Saturday revealed the identities of several Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives killed in strikes across the Gaza Strip earlier in the week, which Israel said were carried out in response to a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire in western Rafah when gunmen opened fire at troops. With both sides claiming ceasefire violations, Berman reviews what a ceasefire entails. We also learn how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to reports that the executive board for Trump’s Board of Peace includes senior officials from Qatar and Turkey. Syria’s army took control of swathes of the country’s north over the weekend, dislodging Kurdish forces from territory over which they had held effective autonomy for more than a decade. President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a “national language” and granting the minority group official recognition. All this comes before the president is meant to speak with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Tuesday, as Germany seeks to step up deportations of Syrians. Is this the start of a great return to Syria? Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Graphic accounts of a violent crackdown emerged via Elon Musk's Starlink satellites, with human rights groups reporting thousands killed by Iran's Revolutionary Guards in what they describe as an unprecedented massacre – even as US President Donald Trump urged protesters on, before appearing to shift his tone.

Ghonim, a 30-year-old Google manager, unwilling to publicly criticize the Egyptian regime, anonymously launched a Facebook campaign to protest one killing by security forces. How did the Egyptian people finally find their voice and reject 30 years of oppression?} Two reasons I chose this episode: 1) Iran, taking a lesson from the Arab Spring, has cut off the nation's internet. 2) Though the later Muslim Brotherhood coup was tragic, Egypt's nonviolent revolution succeeded in toppling an authoritarian dictator and regime. What did it take? How did it build? What can we learn?FF_Ghonim 2012_transcript

Is Iran's uprising a historic turning point, or the start of an even bloodier stalemate? In this episode, you'll learn what actually makes authoritarian regimes crack (hint: it's not street protests alone, it's defections inside the guns-and-batons apparatus), how President Trump's rhetoric (“write down their names,” “help is on its way,” tariffs, canceled talks) is being read as psychological warfare aimed at splintering regime enforcers, and why a U.S.-Israel strike, if it comes, could be calibrated to energize protesters rather than unite the public around the Ayatollahs. The hosts also clash over the nightmare scenario of a last-minute “deal” that leaves the regime alive, then widen the lens to the Abraham Accords, the hypocrisy of Western media and campus activists and the staggering domino effect of an Iran without proxies...ending with a blunt cliffhanger: they're convinced something big is coming, and soon.

On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, Israeli Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sharren Haskel joins us to discuss the rapidly evolving regional dynamics, the impact of October 7th, and the broader implications for Western democracies facing the challenges posed by radical ideologies and political inaction. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go.   Sharren Haskel on the Rising Extremism and Western Political Paralysis Deputy Minister Haskel’s personal story and her reflections on recent attacks in places like Australia, the UK, and across Europe, reveal a growing concern about the unchecked rise of extremism and anti-Semitism in historically tolerant Western societies. Drawing on her years in Australia and the tragedy at Bondi Beach, Haskel expressed her deep shock and frustration over the persistent inaction by local governments in the face of escalating hate crimes against Jewish communities. According to Haskel, the roots of this problem go far beyond foreign policy. She attributes much of the inaction to internal politics and the pursuit of re-election, wherein politicians seek to appease immigrant communities that often arrive with deeply ingrained cultural prejudices, including anti-Semitism, from the Middle East. She criticized governments in Australia, Canada, and the UK for failing to enforce clear boundaries against hate speech and violent incitement. Instead, she argued, there has been a pattern of rhetorical condemnation without concrete protective measures, resulting in what she described as an environment where radicalization can flourish unchecked and Jewish communities are left vulnerable.   The October 7th Attack and Israel's Existential Resolve The conversation turned to the profound impact of October 7th, 2025, an event described as the largest and most brutal attack on Jews since the Holocaust. Haskel recounted the collective mourning and soul-searching that swept Israel, as well as a wave of determination to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again. For Haskel and many Israelis, the attack was not only an unspeakable tragedy but also a moment of disappointment in their generation’s promise to uphold the creed of “never again.” Yet, from the aftermath of horror emerged a powerful sense of resolve. Lochhead remarked that Israel appeared stronger after the attack, not weaker. Haskel recounted how, rather than fleeing, tens of thousands of Israelis and Jews from around the world returned to the country to support its defense. She described this as a pivotal moment, a ‘make it or break it’ scenario in which Israel had to repel attacks from multiple fronts—Hamas, Hezbollah, and hostile forces backed by Iran from Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. The attacks were not only aimed at Jews but also targeted Christians, Muslims, and citizens from various nations, further underscoring the broader threat posed by radical groups.   Iran's Uprising and the Global Stakes for Freedom As the Iranian regime confronted an unprecedented uprising (sparked by years of repression, economic hardship, and the regime's violent response), international attention intensified. Haskel spoke of thousands of Iranians killed or missing, the regime shutting down the internet, and the desperate situation faced by protesters, many of whom were being shot or abducted in broad daylight. Despite threats from Tehran aimed at both Israel and the United States, the Israeli government has maintained a cautious but attentive stance, recognizing both the risks and opportunities presented by the unrest. For Haskel, the Iranian regime stands as the foremost threat to global freedom, having long exported terror and repression while suppressing its own people. She called for solidarity among all who value democracy, emphasizing that the fall of the regime would be a victory for human rights, women’s rights, and the pursuit of liberty everywhere. Despite the cautious approach taken by Israel and its allies, she noted that the most vital pressure must come from within Iran, recalling the historic example of the Shah, who fled under international but primarily popular pressure. The world now stands on the verge of profound change, as old certainties crumble and new alliances and realities emerge. Haskel's message for Iran's protesters was clear: though international support matters, lasting liberation rests on the courage and resilience of the Iranian people themselves. The lesson for the broader international community is that the defense of freedom requires vigilance, unity, and unflinching resolve, both against external enemies and the creeping dangers within democratic societies. As the fate of the Iranian uprising, and indeed the region, hangs in the balance, the stakes extend far beyond the Middle East. The choices made by leaders and citizens alike will shape the future not only of a region in turmoil but of the democratic world as a whole.

In this timely episode of The Alan Sanders Show (Ep. 008), we break down the escalating Iran uprising with death tolls soaring past 2,500 (and some reports claiming 12,000+), as the regime's brutal crackdown continues amid nationwide protests against the 47-year theocracy. President Trump ramps up his gambit with threats of military action, tariffs on Iran's trading partners and calls for protesters to persist, signaling potential U.S. intervention if killings don't stop. Domestically, we celebrate strong retail sales data showing a 4.1% holiday surge in late 2025, pushing totals over $1 trillion and highlighting resilient consumer strength heading into 2026. Plus, the fresh Secret Service leak scandal involving a VP JD Vance detail agent caught sharing sensitive security info on undercover video, raising major concerns about protection and trust. Put Him on Trial. Put ICE on Trial. Put Noem on Trial. Uprising in Iran. Trump's Latest Outrageous Weekend Post. Jerome Powell Punches Back. Pour One Out for Kittle.  Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff returns for a raw, solo “Manosphere Monday” to break down the most urgent story in America: the killing of Minneapolis activist and mother Renee Good  by ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who was caught on video calling her a “fucking bitch” as he shot her. Paul calls it murder. And explains why Ross, Kristi Noem, and ICE itself must be put on trial, elevating the powerful, hopeful statement from Good's wife, Becca, as a model of courage and what “right” looks like in the face of rising tension in Minneapolis and nationwide.   Zooming out, Paul connects this murder to Trump's larger, calculated plan: a wartime-style ICE expansion targeting veterans with bonuses and lowered standards, an unchecked “forever war 2.0” abroad, and the dismantling of independent media from PBS NewsHour Weekend to targeting the Pentagon Press Corps. He makes the case that ICE has become an unaccountable extension of Trump's military power at home and issues a direct call to veterans, cops, independents, and all conscientious Americans to be the circuit breakers who refuse unlawful orders, expose abuses, and stand up before more Americans are killed and more streets become battlefields. Iran is entering one of the most perilous moments in its modern history. In this urgent episode of Shoulder to Shoulder, Rabbi Pesach Wolicki and Pastor Doug Reed are joined by Iranian opposition strategist Mehrdad Marty Youssefiani, a longtime adviser to the Iranian resistance, to assess the rapidly unfolding protests inside Iran and what they mean for the regime's survival. Unlike past uprisings driven by ideology or social reform, today's unrest is fueled by economic collapse: a crashing currency, empty treasuries, shuttered markets, and ordinary Iranians who can no longer afford bread, water, or rent. Youssefiani explains why this shift makes the current protests far more dangerous for the regime, how fear inside Iran's security forces is growing, and why the convergence of internal unrest and external geopolitical pressure has left Tehran more exposed than ever. The conversation also explores the fragmented nature of the Iranian opposition, the realistic prospects for unity in exile and inside Iran, and what signs listeners should be watching for in the coming weeks. Finally, the episode addresses how people of faith can pray, advocate, and support the Iranian people at a moment when the future of the region may be hanging in the balance. This is not speculation. This is a real-time assessment of a regime under unprecedented strain—and a nation approaching a historic crossroads. To help Israel365 and its Aliyah campaign, click here.

THE COLLAPSE OF 1989 AND THE MODERN AUTHORITARIAN PIVOT Colleague Professor Sean McMeekin. In the final segment, McMeekin challenges the narrative that the 1989 collapse was solely a popular uprising. Instead, he argues it was a "top-down disintegration" caused by the withdrawal of Soviet force via the "Sinatra Doctrine" (letting satellites go their own way). Regimes fell because security forces mutinied or stood down, not merely because of protests. Regarding modern Russia, McMeekin notes that while Putin has jettisoned Lenin, he retains a nostalgia for Stalin as a "builder" of state power. The conversation concludes with a warning: while traditional communism relied on extreme violence, modern authoritarian regimes, particularly China, may now use advanced surveillance technology to achieve total control without the same level of overt bloodshed. POLITICS, WAR, AND THE REPUBLICAN SPIRIT OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS Colleague Sebastian Smee. Édouard Manet was a passionate Republican who loathed the authoritarian rule of Napoleon III, a sentiment rooted in his witnessing the 1848 uprising and his travels to Rio where he saw the horrors of slavery. His political activism influenced the Impressionist circle, who were all Republicans. Manet frequented cafés to discuss politics with figures like Léon Gambetta, a moderate Republican leader navigating the tensions between monarchists and radicals. The group's optimism was tested by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870; following the Emperor's defeat at Sedan, a Republic was declared, but Paris was soon besieged by Prussian troops. The war touched the artists directly: the painter Bazille died in combat, and Alfred Sisley painted landscapes on the banks of the Seine that had recently been bloody battlefields, creating art that contemporaries recognized as scenes of trauma.
