Take 240: What's NewBig week. Jonathan and JP are back and there's a lot to get into.List It or Nix It kicks things off with seven fresh trailers — Mayday, I Play Rocky, The Uprising, Behemoth, The Other Mommy, Bad Apples, and Doomsday all go through the gauntlet. In What We've Been Watching, Jonathan saw The Odyssey and then apparently went on a full childhood cinema tour — Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Pagemaster, Harriet the Spy, Stuart Little, Shark Tale, and Zathura. JP brings Project Hail Mary, Lawrence of Arabia, After Hours, and The Odyssey to the table, with House of the Dragon and Silo on the TV side. Then the news, and it's a good one this week. The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million globally — Nolan's biggest worldwide opening ever, beating The Dark Knight Rises. The only films that opened bigger this year are Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Jon Bernthal filmed the Trojan Horse sequence submerged in cold water, Nolan offered to pull him out, and Bernthal's response was essentially: try harder. The film has no real competition until Spider-Man on July 31, which gives it room to run on a $250 million budget that needs the legs. And then — the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped this morning. First proper look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Thor rallying heroes, closing with "we need a miracle" before turning around stunned at a "hey pal." Channing Tatum as Gambit. Cyclops, Mystique, Ant-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans. Tickets on sale now. Opens December 18. The SDCC Hall H panel is Saturday — further reveals expected. It's a good time to love movies.

We also share our reactions to the trailers for "Digger," "Behemoth!" "The Uprising," "I Play Rocky," and "The Incomer." We are still answering your fan-submitted questions, but our answers will now be released separately the day after, in a new show called Mailbag Monday! Sharing a new series from Future Hindsight, Occupy! An Unfinished Uprising. Occupy Wall Street is the story of the improbable becoming possible. In 2008, millions of people were devastated by an economic crash caused by Wall Street greed, but it wasn't until 2011 that there was a mass response from the Left. A call to protest went out, and thousands of people responded. They raged against a system that was rigged against them and tried to create their own anti-capitalist village in a small Manhattan park. The movement quickly spread across the country, inspiring hundreds of occupations and a new generation of activists.Occupy! An Unfinished Uprising, is told through the voices of activists who camped out in Zuccotti Park for almost two months, getting inside the drama of a movement that grew rapidly, felt both transcendent and chaotic, and then violently flamed out. Occupy changed the national conversation about capitalism, popularized the language of the 99%, and inspired a generation of activists. As we approach Occupy's 15th anniversary this September, this series offers a reminder that collective action can reshape what seems possible. Listen to more episodes at http://swap.fm/l/Occupy!

Listen up, yo.

Origins and Politics of Sudan's Proxy War with Isma'il Kushkush (Episode 61)

In this episode, Professor Sahar Aziz is in conversation with award winning journalist Isma'il Kuskush about the complex origins, multiple domestic and foreign actors, and human rights crisis of Sudan's war. The ongoing power struggle between rival military elites is rooted in decades of militarization, failed democratic transition, and unresolved ethnic conflict. Its humanitarian consequences—mass displacement, famine risk, and widespread atrocities—have elevated it into one of the most severe human rights crises globally. The current war in Sudan began in April 2023, when fighting erupted between two factions of the country's security forces: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The immediate trigger was a dispute over integrating the RSF into the national army as part of a planned transition to civilian rule after years of military dominance. A critical turning point occurred in 2019, when longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown. A fragile civilian–military transition followed, but in October 2021, the SAF and RSF jointly staged a coup that derailed democratic reforms. Tensions between the two leaders then escalated into open conflict as both sought control over the state, economic resources (especially gold), and the future political system. The devastating war in Sudan has produced what many international organizations describe as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. Millions of civilians have been displaced, and basic infrastructure—healthcare, food distribution, and education—has collapsed in many regions.BiographyIsma'il Kushkush is a Sudanese-American journalist who was based in Khartoum, Sudan, for eight years, where he contributed to The New York Times, CNN, Voice of America and Al Jazeera English. For two three-month periods in 2014 and again in 2015, he was acting bureau chief for The New York Times in East Africa based in Nairobi. He has covered political, economic, social and cultural stories from Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burundi, Sweden and the United States. He has also worked as a fixer, translator and interpreter. Kushkush grew up in the United States, Sudan, Syria and Kuwait. He received a master of arts degree in journalism from Columbia Journalism School in New York with a focus on politics and global affairs. We open this hour of The Dawn Stensland Show with a deep dive into the hidden reality behind the devices capturing our kids' minds. The team breaks down the ongoing parent uprising against screen time in the Lower Merion School District, exposing how the tech-education complex pushes products, data-mines students without consent, and leaves young children trapped behind digital walls. Dawn exposes the alarming lack of content filtering in public classrooms, where young students have managed to access dark corners of the internet on school-issued devices, all while silencing teachers and principals who are afraid of administrative retaliation. The crew turns their attention to a hopeful shift in American medical research as we welcome Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the NIH, to discuss the multi-agency initiative aimed at reversing decades of offshoring critical clinical trials. We map out what a "Made in America" medical agenda means for major bio-clusters like Philadelphia and how streamlining FDA bureaucracy can directly save American lives. Dr. Bhattacharya reflects openly on his own experience being targeted and shadow-banned during the pandemic, mapping out the rigorous new transparency protocols designed to track vaccine side effects and honestly re-earn public trust in our foundational health institutions. Finally, the show tackles the cultural and sociological shifts changing the traditional landscape of family formation with Institute for Family Studies research fellow Grant Bailey. We break down the stark metrics behind the vanishing father trend, analyzing how entry-level housing spikes, crippling student debt, and ideological polarization are driving young men away from early marriage. Dawn and the team confront the tragic narrative that has guilted younger generations into believing parenthood is an irresponsible burden, while highlighting the distinct populations where the traditional family model continues to thrive and stay resilient.

This is the little-known story of Claypool's Rebellion, another one of the Stories of Appalachia.

If AI writes a better prompt than you can now, what are you still being paid for? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle is joined by two of his closest collaborators, Brian Piper, content and AI integration consultant and co-author of Epic Content Marketing Volume 2, and Dr. Matt Wilkinson, founder of UK agency Strivenn and author of the forthcoming Buyer in the Loop. A month earlier, the three shared a stage at Mark Schaefer's Uprising retreat, building one marketing plan together, each orchestrating their own team of AI helpers to pull it off. Their answer to the question above is discernment. The AI handles the prompting now and most of the drafting. What it can't do is know when an output is wrong, when a claim is weak, when "good enough" isn't. That judgment comes from years of doing the work, and it's the one thing you bring to the machine that the machine can't supply for itself. The same idea runs through everything else they get into: why enterprise AI rollouts keep stalling, why "saving time" never seems to free anyone up, and why the white-collar-apocalypse story makes better clickbait than it does prediction. Listen in and hear about... Why discernment, not prompting, is the skill that holds its value in the AI era What actually went into co-building a campaign live at Mark Schaefer's Uprising retreat The change-management gap behind most failed enterprise AI rollouts Why "AI will take your job" is quietly sabotaging adoption from the inside How going solo became more connected, not more lonely Notable Quotes from Brian Piper and Matt Wilkinson "I think where it really excels is when you tie in expertise, you know, and you talked about building that discernment into the prompt and into the structure of your models that you're using." - Brian Piper "We have this extra time that AI has given us. Now the really strategic part is figuring out how you're going to use that time and how you're going to spend that time in a way that benefits your organization the most or benefits your customer the most." - Brian Piper "Otherwise the world is just going to be full of AI slop. But we can really use AI to increase the way that we think, the way that we engage with the information that we have." - Matt Wilkinson "There is no incentive to work with the AI to teach the AI to take over the tasks that you're doing, because then the AI can take your job. So why are you training up your replacement?" - Matt Wilkinson "I felt lonelier working at an organization than I did now that I'm on my own." - Brian Piper Resources and Links Dan Nestle Lilypath | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Matt Wilkinson Strivenn | Website Dr. Matt Wilkinson | Website Matt Wilkinson | LinkedIn Brian Piper Brian W. When I opened Facebook this morning, as I do every morning, I learned that Alexander Rabinowitch died at 91 years old. Rabinowitch was arguably one of the most important historians of the Russian Revolution. It's hard to state how much Rabinowitch's work influence our understanding of 1917. Before him, it was assumed that the Bolsheviks were a highly disciplined, unpopular political party that came to power through a coup. What Rabinowitch repeatedly showed in his four books on Revolution, the Bolsheviks had popular support, most importantly in factories in Petrograd and in other large cities and at the front. Lenin's slogans, particularly, "Peace, Land, Bread!" had mass support, and by October 1917, successfully rode a wave of revolution into power. And now that Alexander Rabinowitch has left us, I figured I'd dig out my old interview with him from 2017, clean it up, and re-release it to commemorate the life and work of this scholarly giant.Guest:Alexander Rabinowitch was a Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University, where he taught from 1968 until 1999. He's the author of four books on the Russian Revolution: Prelude to Revolution: The Petrograd Bolsheviks and the July 1917 Uprising; The Bolsheviks Come To Power: The Revolution of 1917 in Petrograd; The Bolsheviks in Power: The First Year of Soviet Rule in Petrograd; and finally his fourth and last book which was just published in April, The Bolsheviks Survive: Petrograd 1919 published by the University of Pittsburgh Press.
