One of Czechia's most distinctive jewellery designers, Zdeněk Vacek currently has a sensational retrospective of his quarter-century career at Prague's Museum of Decorative Arts. Vacek, a goldsmith by trade, was previously known for his work under the name Zorya with then life partner Daniel Pošta but now operates solo, mainly producing tailor-made pieces for often affluent clients. I spoke to him at the exhibition.

In today's Gospel, Jesus says to us, "If you had faith the size of a mustard tree, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and cast into the sea' and it would happen." While this is impossible for man, nothing is impossible for God. What is the impossible thing -- the miracle -- that you desire of God? May our faith be strengthened so that we will believe that God can do even this!

Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Stephanie Elizondo Griest to discuss her latest book Art Above Everything: One Woman's Global Exploration of the Joys and Torments of a Creative Life, which is so up Dennis's alley. (Actually, a listener reached out to Dennis and said, "You need to check out this book. It's what you talk about all the time.") Stephanie talks about the through line that many of the women she profiled share, how the big things that happened in world while she was working on the book--COVID, her own cancer diagnosis, the #metoo movement, Trumpism--impacted her work and the question for artists that lies at the heart of the book; Is it worth it? Stephanie also talks about the alternative paths she could have chosen, how even the safe roads in life aren't safe anymore and what she's observed about young people since she started working as a writing professor in North Carolina. Other topics include: the boyfriend she had when she was living in Russia who was given an offer to kill someone for money, her complicated relationship to belly dancing, getting to spend time with one of her heroes. author Sandra Cisneros, the Ugandan playwright she interviewed who saw where Trumpism was heading way back in 2015, how various foreign countries support their artists and how American's Karen-esque sense of entitlement may be what ends up saving us all. https://stephanieelizondogriest.com

Today's guest is Chris Stamey. He's done A LOT! He grew up in North Carolina, playing bass with Mitch Easter and Peter Holsapple. They played in churches and coffee shops because those were the only places at the time that encouraged original music. Around this time he began studying music at the University of North Carolina. He transferred to NYU but because of some weird scheduling issues, his music studies translated to a degree in philosophy. But his time there also introduced him to Alex Chilton and Richard Lloyd. Richard played a huge part in the formation of one of Chris' early bands, The dB's. We barely scratch the surface of his career here. Chris is very candid about his time in The dB's as well as his latest album, Anything Is Possible. It took shape in a unique way and there are some unusual musical ideas there; like combining Humphrey Bogart with Roy Orbison. That'll make more sense once you listen to the episode. The album is a journey through Chris' evolution of musical loves and influences. Check it out on streaming platforms. Buy it wherever you can. What an absolute pleasure it is to have the wonderful Kim O'Sullivan on the podcast. Kim, who is the founder of the truly exceptional brand Brow Aid is an example of a woman who had an idea and against the odds, made it into a reality. She talks about how sometimes you need to hit rock bottom to actually get to a better place and shares a story of a true love for beauty, brow obsession, trying to make everything work as a single parent and eventually taking a risk and it paying off. This kind of episode really is my favourite because it's a message to us all that whatever rut we're stuck in, we CAN get out of it. There's always a way! You're going to love getting to know this truly brilliant woman!

You've been told that anything is possible so many times that the words have lost their meaning. You've watched other people achieve incredible things while you feel stuck in the same patterns, the same limitations, the same disappointments. And maybe part of you has started to believe that those success stories happen to other people - the lucky ones, the chosen ones, the ones who were born with something you weren't given. But what if I told you that every single person who has ever achieved something extraordinary started exactly where you are right now? What if I told you that the feeling of being stuck, of being limited, of being ordinary is actually the launching pad for everything miraculous that's about to unfold in your life? You see, impossibility isn't a wall - it's a doorway. And the people who walk through that doorway aren't special in the way you think they are. They're special in only one way: they refused to accept the story that everyone else accepted about what was possible for them. This activation isn't going to give you empty promises or surface-level motivation. In this episode you're going to experience something that rewires your entire relationship with limitation itself. You're going to discover that the voice in your head that says 'that's impossible for someone like me' is not your voice. It's not even based on your reality. It's based on a collection of old stories, inherited beliefs, and statistical probabilities that have absolutely nothing to do with what you're actually capable of. Every breakthrough in human history started with someone who was told it couldn't be done. Every miracle began with someone who refused to accept the limitations that everyone else took for granted. And every transformation started with someone who felt exactly the way you feel right now - ready for something different, even if they couldn't yet see how it was possible.
On this week's episode of The Runna Podcast, we sit down with Richard Whitehead MBE - double Paralympic gold medalist, four-time world champion, and world-record marathoner - to hear how he turned barriers into breakthroughs. We cover:
James 5:16 says, “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” With faith, anything is possible! In this power-packed message, Ps. Kat encourages us to believe that God will answer our faith-filled prayers. God is looking for people to raise the spiritual temperature.
Our guest Chris Stamey's new album is called Anything Is Possible, and during long and fruitful musical career, he's done just about everything. As a founding member of The dB's he helped define an era of 1970s indie rock and power pop, and his solo work (and duo work with his fellow dB Peter Holsapple) only widened his songwriting vocabulary. Among the distinguished guests joining Stamey on Anything Is Possible are another NC music legend Mitch Easter, plus some friends of the podcast, including The Lemon Twigs, Pat Sansone (Wilco), Marshall Crenshaw, and many more. Lately, Chris has been 1/5th of the Big Star Quintet, performing the music of Big Star (with original drummer Jody Stephens) and this year, he'll release an album with The Salt Collective, in partnership with French musician Stéphane Schück. When I spoke with Chris Stamey way back for Caropop Ep. 30, he shared a sheet music collection called Marvelous Melodies Songbook, New Songs Vol. III. Several of those songs appear on his wonderful new album, Anything Is Possible (out July 11), as do the Brian Wilson-evoking “I'd Be Lost Without You,” the Wilson-covering “Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” and the optimistic, guitar-driven title track. Stamey has a well-thought-out reason for every musical choice he makes. Here we dig into one of my favorite subjects, chord changes, and discuss writing songs in one's head, on an instrument or on paper. He also reflects on the impact of playing with the Big Star Quintet and the reunited dB's. What's the connection between “getting the notes in the right place” and creating magic? (Photo by John Gessner.)

We examine what happens when the feeling that "anything is possible" starts to fade from creative life. Starting with the mythology of Los Angeles and its role in manufacturing dreams, we dig into the shift from youthful ambition to adult pragmatism and what gets lost in that transition. The conversation explores how being surrounded by people chasing big goals creates an energy that's hard to replicate once life becomes more complicated. We discuss the practical realities that erode creative optimism - mounting responsibilities, financial pressures, and the accumulated weight of meetings that don't pan out and projects that stall. But we also examine whether this decline is inevitable or if there are ways to maintain that sense of possibility through intentional community building and creative practice. The episode grapples with finding authentic creative energy in midlife and the challenge of sustaining ambitious work when the path forward feels less clear than it once did. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review.
