0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome ... introduces the panel and dedicates show #264 to Lakers legend Elgin Baylor, the first NBA player to score 64 points in a game. 1:05 ... Giannis Antetokounmpo has a new Heat teammate in future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson.  The guys discuss this very important pickup and how he brings a winning mentality and still effective three point shooting to the table in Miami. 7:29 ... Jonathan Kuminga is the newest member of the Timberwolves and it's a huge opportunity for the "soon to be" 24 year old to finally reach his potential after years of frustration in Golden State and a short stint in Atlanta. 13:05 ... The New Orleans Pelicans have signed Bennedict Mathurin, the former Pacer and Clipper.  It's a team friendly deal that gives this "bucket getter" a chance to increase his value and hopefully cash in after one season in NOLA.  He'll need to improve his defense and passing but it's a reasonable gamble for GM Joe Dumars to take. 17:46 ... The guys all have three regular season games circled that they're looking forward to seeing.  Bruce starts us off with last season's Western Conference finals rematch on opening night (Thunder vs Spurs). 18:46 ... Next up is World B with Nuggets vs Thunder 20:22 ... Ross's first choice is Timberwolves vs Heat in both team's opener 20:49 ... Bruce is looking forward to Jaylen Brown's return to Boston with his 76ers in late January. 21:33 ... World B likes the first Pistons/Knicks matchup and reminds everyone that Detroit dominated the Knicks last season. 22:57 ... Ross can't wait to see LeBron James and the 76ers on their first visit to the LA for a Christmas Day game against the Lakers. 23:23 ... Bruce looks forward or the first head to head matchup between the last two number one overall picks (Cooper Flagg and AJ Dybantsa) when the Mavericks host the Wizards in March. 24:14 ... World B likes the Lakers and Timberwolves as Luka Doncic and Anthony Edwards face off on December 16th. 25:23 .... Word Association ... Dennis Schroeder 26:42 .... Moussa Diabate 27:53 ... Most nonprofits chase a celebrity two months before their gala, email an agent, ask about money, and wonder why they get ghosted.Afam Onyema has spent 19 years doing the opposite. As CEO of the GEANCO Foundation, he has brought Oprah, Daniel Craig, Charize Theron, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Prince Harry and Meghan into the work of saving and transforming lives in Nigeria. In this episode he breaks down exactly how, and almost none of it is about asking for a check. The core idea: celebrities want to help, but the ask is usually terrible. It leads with money, it is transactional, and it is rushed. Afam walks Trevor through the ask that actually works: build the relationship first, ask on behalf of the people you serve, and offer the one thing that costs the celebrity nothing but raises you millions, which is access. Set visits, premiere tickets, and time with your donors turn a "no" into a repeatable revenue stream.Whether you run a soup kitchen in Toledo or a national foundation, there is a local athlete, actor, or executive within 100 miles of you who has never been asked the right way. The NBA Has Made Winning Too Expensive

Ric Bucher opens this episode of On The Ball by addressing the backlash to his recent WNBA commentary — including criticism from former ESPN colleague Jemele Hill — and explains why he believes social-media outrage routinely turns nuanced arguments into something they were never intended to be.Then comes the bigger NBA issue: Are teams still being constructed primarily to win championships? The four-team trade sending Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets to the Cleveland Cavaliers is the latest example of why Ric believes instant NBA trade grades are nearly worthless. Denver didn't lose Watson because it suddenly decided he wasn't worth keeping. His new contract would've pushed the Nuggets' luxury-tax bill from roughly $68 million to more than $220 million. The real mistake, Ric argues, came years earlier, when organizational dysfunction between former coach Michael Malone and GM Calvin Booth squandered precious seasons of Nikola Jokic's prime.Ric applies the same long-term test to the Celtics' Jaylen Brown trade, the Clippers' acquisition of Max Strus, and other moves increasingly dictated by the NBA's punitive second apron. The result? Instead of asking how Denver can put another championship roster around Jokic, fans are left discussing tax bills, cap sheets and whether Jokic eventually needs to leave. But the money isn't the only thing changing the league. Ric examines the transformation of NBA ownership from locally rooted businessmen who viewed players as employees into globally connected billionaires who may see franchise ownership as membership in an exclusive social club — with superstar players becoming prized relationships as much as prized employees. That shift, he argues, has changed the balance of power among owners, stars, agents and even the reporters who cover them.Has the modern NBA become better at creating billionaires than creating champions?00:00 — Welcome to On The Ball01:15 — Why Ric changed the show's introduction02:20 — Responding to the backlash over the WNBA episode03:13 — Jemele Hill's criticism and what Ric actually said04:49 — The question about WNBA broadcast diversity05:15 — Lynx-Valkyries and the problem with “safe” commentary07:15 — Transgender athletes and what Ric says his argument actually was09:01 — Men's scout teams, women's basketball and competitive advantage10:12 — Peyton Watson traded: why Denver's return isn't the real story11:32 — Why Ric says NBA trade grades are “worthless”12:16 — Why Denver couldn't afford Watson's $88 million deal13:00 — The real Nuggets failure: Malone, Booth and wasted Jokic years14:15 — How close Denver may have been to more championships15:08 — Why Jokic's best championship window may already have been squandered15:52 — Cleveland's tax savings and the contradiction in grading the trade16:45 — Denver's real grade: wasting two prime Jokic seasons16:59 — Jalen Brown to Philadelphia: why that trade can't be graded yet18:19 — Boston's squandered opportunities with Brown and Tatum18:41 — Clippers get Max Strus — but what's their actual plan?19:57 — Giannis, Jokic, Steph and the Clippers' possible 2027 strategy20:25 — The NBA's second apron is changing the purpose of trades21:00 — Denver's “yard sale” and why Jokic departure talk is inevitable21:51 — Jalen Brunson's sacrifice vs. what Jokic may eventually face22:43 — How a new generation of NBA owners changed the league23:37 — Are NBA teams becoming billionaire status symbols?24:07 — From employees to “wingmen”: how owners now view superstars25:03 — Steve Ballmer, Kawhi Leonard and modern owner-player relationships25:28 — How agents and NBA newsbreakers became intertwined26:36 — Why losing old-school owners like Jeanie Buss matters27:27 — What disappearing local ownership means for NBA fans27:40 — Closing thoughts#NBA #NikolaJokic #DenverNuggets #PeytonWatson #ClevelandCavaliers #BostonCeltics #JalenBrown #WNBA #JemeleHill #JeanieBuss #Lakers #NBATrades #OnTheBall #RicBucherSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bucher-and-friends. The Eastern Conference got deeper, tougher and more star-powered — so where do the rebuilding Chicago Bulls actually fit?On today's Chicago Bulls Central, Haize breaks down why the Bulls should absolutely try to win in 2026-27, but why this season should be judged more as an information season than a simple Play-In-or-bust campaign. Chicago is not really competing with the top of the East yet. The bigger question is whether Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis and Caleb Wilson can prove they are the foundation of a team that can eventually climb the conference. The East is no longer the soft conference fans have joked about for years. New York is the defending champion, Philadelphia added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, Boston still has Jayson Tatum, Miami added Giannis Antetokounmpo, Indiana gets Tyrese Haliburton back, Detroit went 60-22, and Cleveland added Peyton Watson while retaining James Harden.Haize explains why Chicago's real battle may not be with the championship tier yet, but with the teams directly ahead of them: Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte and Washington. NBA.com's preseason ranking had Atlanta ninth, Orlando 10th, Charlotte 11th, Washington 12th and Chicago 13th — making that group the Bulls' immediate neighborhood. The show also lays out the real success markers for the season: Caleb Wilson looking like a cornerstone, Matas making a meaningful Year 3 jump, Giddey proving he fits with both, Chicago improving defensively, multiple young players establishing roles, and Tiago Splitter building a clear identity.Plus, Haize reacts to the Bulls getting bumped to No. 23 in CBS Sports' front office rankings. Bryson Graham has brought Chicago a clearer direction, but he still has plenty to prove after a modest offseason built around flexibility, player development and evaluation.
