But Ian Stevenson was not a carnival psychic or a late-night ghost hunter. He was a respected psychiatrist at the University of Virginia who spent decades investigating children who claimed to remember previous lives, along with cases involving birthmarks, apparitions, telepathy, and other alleged evidence for life after death. I just got back from a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where we stayed at the historic Rose Farm. This site, comprised of the farm, the legendary Wheatfield, and Rose Woods, saw some of the fiercest fighting of the battle on July 2nd, 1863. Thousands of men were wounded and died here, and hundreds were buried on the Wheatfield, Rose Farm, and even right outside the Rose House itself. After the battle, the house remained a field hospital for wounded soldiers. Due to all the death and tragedy that happened there, many people believe the area to be haunted by the spirits of the soldiers who lost their lives there. Bernadette Soubirous' feast day is April 16, the anniversary of her death in 1879. The Virgin Mary gave her name to a 14-year old girl near Lourdes, stating: "I am the Immaculate Conception." Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared 18 times (between 11 February and 16 July in 1858) to Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79). In the grotto or cave, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a believed to be, miraculous spring. The annual Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in 1890 for February 11 by Pope Leo XIII. Ee276.
