Love Me Two Times, BabyElliott begins by recalling how his daughter would dress up like Esther on Purim, all made up as though entering a “beauty contest.” But when you read the Megillah, the facts are far scarier. The key verb in relation to the story's central figure, Esther is that “she was taken.” And in fact, just like the Liam Neeson movie, she is taken, kidnapped, to be a sex slave. The Megillah relates that all women in Persia at that time are taken to be used sexually by the king, and then discarded, their bodies and their autonomy utterly stripped.Yossi points out that a close reading reveals that a major focus of the text is not the Jews, but rather the women. One example is Vashti, the king's wife, who is an independent woman, but is suddenly summoned by the king, who demands her presence. When she refuses, she is deposed of her crown (and executed). What ensues is what Yossi calls an “institutionalized massacre of women's rights.” And yet, Yossi continues, even though she too was taken like an object, Esther somehow makes an impression on the king. Her key moment comes after the king has not sent for her for thirty days. Mordechai urges her to approach the king, to speak up about the plight of the Jews, though ordinarily one cannot approach the king without being summoned. So Esther internalizes the fact that, as Yossi says “if I die, I am going to die speaking, not silent.”But how can she get through to a king who views her and all women as sex objects? So she invites him to not just one, but two parties. Why, asks Yossi, would she not have used the very first opportunity to beg for salvation for the Jews? Why delay matters by inviting the king to a second party? It is an attempt to get the king to see her as human, as someone outside of the bedroom.Elliott likes this reading but asks us to speculate about the end of the story and beyond, and asks: “What is the position of women in Persia after the story? Answer: Unchanged.” What Elliott calls the “nasty residue” of the story is that in the kingdom you have a systematic transfer and trafficking of women. State mechanisms are used to transport women to the palace and prepare them for sex. And nothing that happens with Esther and Mordechai will change that fact.Yossi envisions a less harsh possibility, in that Esther's advocating for her own humanity will affect the king to recognize, perhaps, the humanity of others. Yossi asserts that “one woman's voice is very powerful”, and that Esther was willing to risk everything in order to make a point about her humanness. Thus, the Megillah really is the book of Esther, where she is the centre and the heroine. Esther is a woman for our time, demanding to be seen as fully human. That would take two nights, not just one.Email us at hello@livingjewishly.org, we would love to hear from you!Be sure to follow us on Instagram Facebook If you like the show, please leave a review, it helps us to reach more people just like you.

The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee has approved a bill that is designed to change the composition of the Judges Selection Committee and to deny the High Court of Justice any option of either intervening or striking down basic laws. The bill now moves to its first reading in the Knesset plenum next week. President Yitzhak Herzog on Sunday said that he is deeply concerned that the judicial reform in its current format might adversely affect Israel's democratic foundations. “We are on the verge of legal and social collapse, and I refuse to stand by,” he said. Yossi Beilin served as Justice minister 1999-2001. Reporter Mark Weiss asked him what worries him the most about the government's judicial overhaul plan. Joe Yolk (@joeylandolfa) is joined by Yossi Golzan (@yossigozlan) of hoopsHype and USA today's Sports Wire Media Group. Joe starts with a 90 second Knicks-Magic recap before getting into the deadline talk. Yossi first explains why a team would trade another team something for nothing, explaining the Heat-Spurs trade and how a trade exemption is useful for a team within 1 year of the trade date. Joe follows that up with asking Yossi who he would be more concerned with making a deal with, Danny Ainge or Masai Ujiri. The correct answer for all teams not named the Knicks is Danny Ainge, but with the Carmelo Anthony and Andrea Bargnani deals of Ujiri's past, the answer for New York fans isn't as clear. They then get into the potential deals that exist for New York, namely the Michael Scotto reported deal with Utah involving Obi Toppin and Evan Fournier for Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley. Yossi gives his insight on whether it makes sense for the Knicks (it doesn't) and questions why New York would give draft capital for role players. They follow that up with the Ian Begley reports about Cam Reddish potentially being dealt to either the Nuggets or Pistons, and who or what the Knicks could receive in return. They finish up with discussing what the Raptors Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., Pascal Siakim, and OG Anunoby's trade values would be in terms of draft compensation. Study Guide Nazir 15 Today’s daf is dedicated to our amazing mom and grandma - Patty Belkin! Love, Jason, Erica, Raquel, Eli, Ariel, and Gili. Today's daf is dedicated for the rescue and healing of the victims of the earthquake. May we find more living and help more of those displaced. Our thoughts and prayer are with them and their families. The Gemara proves the words of Rabbi Yossi bar Rabbi Hanina that if the days of a nazir have passed before but one has not yet done the shaving and sacrifices, one would not get lashes for any of the prohibitions – only for becoming impure to the dead. But then a braita is brought to contradict him as it appears there that one would receive lashes for all the prohibitions of a nazir. The Mishna cites a case where one said I will become a nazir when I have a child and I will be a nazir for a hundred days. There are different interpretations of the law of the Mishna. It all depends on whether the child was born before the seventieth day or after. If before, then one doesn't need to count extra days but if after, one does. Rav says that if the child is born on the seventieth day, this day can also be considered the first day of the nazir for the child - according to the law that part of the day can be considered a whole day, and therefore also for the nazir term of a hundred days, it will be counted as two days and one can perform the shaving and sacrifices on the hundredth day and not day one hundred and one. The Gemara brings two difficulties about his words from our Mishna - the first one is resolved but the second one is not. And they conclude that Rav does not agree with our Mishna. The Gemara tries to find a tanna that Rav's opinion corresponds to. First, they suggest Abba Shaul regarding matters of mourning, but that is not successful. Then they try Rabbi Yossi regarding a zav or zava and the Passover sacrifice. There are two ways to understand his opinion and according to one way, the words of a Rav will correspond to his opinion.

Tu B'Shvat is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the renewal of trees in a yearly cycle. Elliott notes, the timing of the holiday on the Jewish calendar is weird, falling out in the middle of winter. If we really wanted to get into the spirit of the day, we'd send everyone out into the middle of mature, "into the wild," to experience the trees. Rabbi Yossi points out that the winter is also a cool time to think about trees, because it is when the sap starts to run. The trees are starting to come alive, on the inside, where the sap is starting to build. Really, this is symbolic of the inner growth that takes place inside of us as human beings. Yossi adds that maple syrup is an ancient food but you have to get rid of the excess foam, which is a great metaphor for what people have to do - to keep the sweet parts of ourselves and get rid of the excess. As Yossi says, "whatever your winter looks like" you have to learn to go through the dark nights and come out on the other side.Elliott also notes that educationally, Tu B'shvat should teach us to "throw out the playbook." Jewish schools could plan a trip, throw away the books for a day, and take students out into nature to experience renewal and the miracle of creation. The holiday of the trees shows us that religious education can be found as much in nature as in textbooks. Yossi says there should be "Outward Bound" program for Tu B'shvat. This holiday represents the environmental ethic of the ancient rabbis and their view of the ecosystem, exemplified in the discussion of rain in the second paragraph of the Shema prayer. God gives human stewardship over the earth and it is up to us to make sure we treat that a sacred trust. In an age of climate change, this is a powerful message.Shout out to the late great Neil Peart of Rush and his wonderful song "The Trees!"Email us at hello@livingjewishly.org, we would love to hear from you!Be sure to follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/living.jewishly/ and on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/livingjewishly/If you like the show, please leave a review, it helps us to reach more people just like you.

Among the topics covered: - The failure of the Israeli left and the death of the Zionist left - Religious Zionism - The one-state solution, ethnic cleansing, and the death of the two-state solution - Rundowns of the careers and influence of Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir on Israeli political life; the differences between Smotrich and Ben-Gvir and the ways in which they are opposed to each other - The Second Intifada - Why the Israeli left's parties focusing on the dangerous nature of Smotrich failed when it came to the elections - Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Temple Mount, and how issues related to the Temple Mount could lead to a conflagration - The treatment of Palestinians in Israel, human rights, and what the right-wing coalition victory in Israel means - Claims the Itamar Ben-Gvir has distanced himself from his extremist-leaning past - How Israel's politics have caught up with it's culture - The Israeli far-right's view on LGBTQ+ issues - The ways in which the Israeli far-right and elements of the Trumpist/MAGA right in the U.S. influence each other - Itamar Ben-Gvir told Yossi that he would be the "leader of the religious revolution in Israel"; Ben-Gvir's changing tactics/methods over the years; Ben Gvir's tactics for dealing with the media and the law - What are the worst possible outcomes for Israel/Palestine in the coming years? - The question of whether Ben-Gvir will receive a ministerial position in the government; could Ben-Gvir seek to become Prime Minister at some point? - The New York Times and Washington Post's articles that express concern over the far right's gains in the Israeli election (including an op-ed by Thomas Friedman); the Axios article by Barak Ravid indicating the Biden administration won't work with Itamar Ben-Gvir in a ministerial position - How and why Netanyahu pandered to and mainstreamed the Israeli far-right; why Netanyahu can longer control those elements of Israeli political life; the Netanyahu family and issues within the family; what Netanyahu's victory may mean for his corruption trial in court And much, much more!
Meretz will not be a member of Israel's 25th Knesset, according to data from the Central Election Committee after all of the votes from Tuesday's election were counted. It needed just 3,800 more votes to pass, and its approximately 151,000 votes will not count in the division of seats, leaving the bloc led by Likud leader MK Benjamin Netanyahu with 64 seats and the parties that oppose him with 56 seats. "This is a very difficult moment for me, and for my friends in Meretz. The election results are a disaster for Meretz, a disaster for the country, and yes, also a personal disaster for me," Meretz Party leader Zehava Galon said in a video to her supporters after the announcement. Only two years ago, Netanyahu declared that Itamar Ben Gvir, the most popular leader on the far-right with deep roots in the racist Kahanist movement, wasn't fit to be a minister. Now, Netanyahu affirms that he would be a part of any future government. Will a coalition with Ben Gvir unravel the social fabric of Israel? Is the threat he represents exaggerated? How should Israeli liberals and moderates respond? Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi discuss Israel's upcoming fateful and potentially dangerous election. Yossi Ronen is a contact experiencer who lives in Israel. In 1981, he had his first experience with non-human intelligences while sleeping in his bed. What started out as a benign dream then turned scary for Yossi as he realized he and his home had been invaded by beings not of this world. What was the purpose for the visit? Was Yossi shown a glimpse of our future destruction?

Shiur given by Yossi Volovik on Sunday Morning Alumni Shiur. Shiur recorded in Yeshivas Ohr Reuven, Monsey, NY.
This month's learning is sponsored by Debbie Gevir and her husband Yossi. “Thank you to Rabbanit Michelle, Hadran and the Hadran Zoom community for their kindness, support and care during a medically challenging year. May you all be zoheh to a healthy and happy תשפ"ג!” Rava and Abaye disagree about the difference between Rabbi Yehuda and the tanna kama in the Mishna regarding the first case of a man who vows to forbid his wife to derive benefit from him. Regarding the timeframe of 30 days, Rav and Shmuel disagree about whether it means that he took a vow to up to thirty days or was it without a time frame and the Mishna is saying that we give him a 30-day grace period to see if he will change his mind. They have the same disagreement on a previous Mishna where he forbids her from having intercourse with him. Why was it necessary to state both? A question is raised against Shmuel from the second case in the Mishna where he forbids her a type of fruit and there is no grace period. To which the Gemara answers that it must be that she was the one who took the vow and he ratified it. The opinion of the Mishna is that in that case, he is held responsible as without his ratification, the vow would not be valid. Unattributed opinions in the Mishna are generally attributed to rabbi Meir, However, in this case, it raises a problem as Rabbi Meir holds that in vows that a woman makes and the husband ratifies, the woman is the one responsible. The Gemara tries to reconcile this with a different source that shows who holds what on that issue. Some of the other opinions there also don't seem to correspond to opinions in our Mishna and the Gemara attempts to resolve them. Rabbi Yosi in the Mishna held that a poor woman whose husband vows that she cannot adorn herself indefinitely must divorce her and give her the ketuba money. This implies that a husband can annul those types of vows. However, elsewhere Rabbi Yosi holds that he cannot annul vows of this type - only ones that are considered affliction to the woman. The Gemara suggests that this could be in the category of matters between the husband and wife. It is not clear, however, that all would agree it goes into this category, in which case they suggest that we can explain the case somewhat differently - that he vowed to forbid her to have relations with him if she adorns herself. What is the time frame that would be permitted for them to stay married if she was poor (according to Rabbi Yosi) and why does he hold 30 days for a wealthy woman? If someone vows that his wife will be forbidden to visit her family - the amount of time before he would need to divorce her depends on whether her family lives in the city or not. If he vows that she will be forbidden to visit a house of mourning or house of celebration, he must divorce her immediately unless the crowd there is a "bad" crowd and he wants to keep her away from them. If he vows that she needs to do things that would embarrass her, he should divorce her immediately. In all these cases, she received her ketuba money. The Gemara brings two resolutions to a contradiction in the language of the Mishna in the case of the vow to forbid her from going to her father’s house.
