On the latest State of the Union episode, we highlight the FA Cup triumph for Crystal Palace, who ended a 119-year drought with a 1-0 win over Manchester City. Chris Richards played a starring role, becoming—along with Matt Turner—the first USMNT player to win the FA Cup since Tim Howard in 2004. In the Netherlands, Malik Tillman capped PSV's 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam, completing a remarkable Eredivisie turnaround where Ajax went from nine points up to one point behind. In Italy, Juventus took a step toward Champions League qualification as Weston McKennie and Tim Weah featured in a 2-0 win. Roma beat AC Milan 3-1 despite an assist from Pulisic. Meanwhile, Inter and Napoli drew, pushing the Serie A title race to the final day. In Germany, Gio Reyna's late appearance in Dortmund's 3-0 win sealed a UCL spot, though his emotional reaction hinted at a possible farewell. Where would you like Reyna to land next season? Peter Mellor had a successful goalkeeping career in England, playing for Fulham, Burnley, Portsmouth and more. He later moved to North America to play in the North American Soccer League, before retiring. He moved to Florida and, ultimately, began life after soccer. However, Mellor was pulled back into the coaching ranks and ultimately become a critical influence in goalkeeping development within the ranks of US Soccer. In that role, Mellor coached many of the best young players in the game. One of those players was Tim Howard, who he first met during an ODP camp where the New Jersey native stood out among older, more established players. Mellor joined Founding Futbol and shared his memories of Howard, how their relationship evolved, what made the US Soccer legand special, and so much more. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. By 2012, Tim Howard had established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. As Everton's starter, he regularly placed in the top four of various statistical categories and helped The Toffees inch their way towards the upper half of the table. At the same time, Howard was well established as the first choice keeper for the US Men's National Team. However, in his illustrious career a few moments still rise above the rest. One such moment was the goal Howard scored against Bolton on January 4, 2012. For both the sheer rarity and excellence of the feat, as well as the way he handled it, Howard endeared himself to American soccer fans in a way that highlighted a legendary career. Steve Jolley played ten years in Major League Soccer (MLS) for the LA Galaxy, NY/NJ MetroStars and FC Dallas. He was named an All-Star in 2001 when he was teammates with Tim Howard. Jolley joined Founding Futbol to recount his time playing with Howard, talk about what made him special on and off the field and so much more. He remembers when Howard left for the Premier League and talks about Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. The US Men's National Team went to the 2010 World Cup with high hopes. Coming off a massive win over Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup and looking to avenge a disappointing 2006 World Cup showing, the trip to South Africa was one filled with expectations. When the draw put them in England's group, everyone highlighted that game as the one to watch. But, as often happens, group play brought interesting dynamics and the US needed a win against Algeria to make it happen. What unfolded was one of the most dramatic late-game goals in the history of American soccer. Landon Donovan received a pass from Tim Howard to start the break after regular time had expired, and after passing the ball away, followed his run and finished a rebound that would live forever in the history books Mike Sorber became the first person in US Soccer history to both play in and coach a men's World Cup for the national team. He joined Founding Futbol to help us explore the build-up to the World Cup, that game, the significance of that group of players and more. European club exhibitions have become a fixture of American soccer fandom. Premier League teams like Manchester United, Arsenal Liverpool and Chelsea have built, in part, their massive followings in the United States through television exposure, but also by touring US cities and building community at live events. While clubs have a long history of touring the US, the weight and gravity of those exhibitions changed through the vision of Charlie Stillitano and his company, ChampionsWorld. Stillitano founded ChampionsWorld as a full-service soccer promotional agency, one that facilitated the sale of Tim Howard to ManU. But he always had a vision of spotlighting European clubs via events in America and turned that vision into reality with the ChampionsWorld Series in 2003 and 2004. Stillitano joined Founding Futbol to share his journey to the creation of the company and the touring series. He shared the inspiration for the idea behind ChampionsWorld and more. Rookies reported to camp on Tuesday, and it was announced that Theo Johnson would start the season on the PUP list. Art Stapleton reported via Twitter that the Giants placed TE Theo Johnson on the active/PUP list, meaning his injury occurred on site rather than being a pre-existing condition. According to sources, Johnson is dealing with a hip flexor, which typically requires one to three weeks of rest and treatment for mild conditions, though more severe cases can take up to six weeks or longer. There's no word on how he became injured, but it's an injury affecting the muscles where the thigh meets the hip.In more positive news, Daniel Jones will not start camp on the PUP list. Ian Rappaport of NFL Media reported that Jones is not expected to begin training camp on the PUP list, indicating a positive progression in his ACL rehab.Darius Slayton recently defended Daniel Jones against Patrick Peterson's criticism. Peterson had said, "I had an opportunity to play against Daniel Jones a couple of times — ain't nothing impressive about him to a defense... He's shown an inability to read defenses quickly, to get the ball out quickly, and I just think he has a problem dissecting the 11 guys on defense." In response, Slayton pointed out on "All Facts No Brakes" with Keyshawn Johnson that Jones had strong performances against Peterson's Vikings, questioning the validity of Peterson's comments given the Giants' offensive success in those games.Giants GM Joe Schoen revealed on the Hard Knocks Podcast that mock drafts do influence some of their decisions. He mentioned that they evaluate the accuracy of various mock drafts over the years, paying more attention to those with a proven track record.Saquon Barkley and his agent, Ed Berry, were aware that their phone conversations with Joe Schoen might be used in "Hard Knocks." Other executives, such as Panthers' Dan Morgan and Patriots' Eliot Wolf, were also alerted to this possibility.Interestingly, the Giants reportedly used Beyoncé's music in their office to see if copyright issues would force HBO to edit out footage for "Hard Knocks." This playful tactic came to light during the Giants 100 event at MSG.Andrew Thomas was named to PFF's Top 50 NFL Players, ranked at 29. PFF highlighted that his injury last season was a significant loss for the Giants, but with a return to health and better teammates on the line, Thomas is well worthy of this ranking. Two former Giants, Phil Simms and Ron Johnson, are set to be inducted into the NJ Hall of Fame. Simms, originally from Kentucky, has lived in NJ since 1979. Johnson, the first Giants RB to rush for over 1,000 yards, lived in NJ from 1970 until his death in 2018. The induction ceremony will air on Fox 5 on Nov 13, featuring other notable inductees like Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, and Tim Howard.#giants #nygiants #giants100 #hardknocksSupport the Show. All Episodes are shot LIVE with fan interactions on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, & TwitchSponsor the show at: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballsInterested in starting a podcast. Hey Colorado Rapids fans, WE'RE WALKIN' HEEEEEER! Holding The High Line podcasts on Return of the Sixth, to the joy of defensive midfielders everywhere. We recap a win against NYCFC. There were individual performances about with Rafael Navarro and Cole Bassett scoring. Oliver Larraz and Moïse Bombito did the job defensively. Omir Fernandez and Kévin Cabral were good between the boxes. We celebrate Tim Howard being inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. Then we preview a home match against an improved San Jose Earthquakes team. Here are Rabbi's and Red's soccer streaming articles we referenced. Also, here's Darlington Nagbe's TACO rings.
Player of the Season is where we begin this week. How many goalkeepers, if any, were handed awards at EFL end-of-campaign shindigs this term? In the Premier League (where awards are yet to be handed out) decisions were made in favour of David Raya and Dean Henderson, but against Mark Travers. We discuss whether or not each one was correct. The Championship's final day saw clean sheets and subsequent survival for Mike Cooper, James Beadle and Aynsley Pears at Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn respectively, while Grant Smith leaps into League Two with promoted Bromley. A word on Tim Howard, too, who this week gained entry into the US National Soccer Hall of Fame.
With the European seasons drawing to a close, the time has come to zero in on decisions facing Gregg Berhalter ahead of the Copa America. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies and Jesse Marsch nominate their locks for the USMNT's 23-man roster and discuss the competition for the remaining places (07:23). Griffin Yow joins from Belgium to talk about his professional growth since coming through the ranks at DC United, how his game and mentality have developed at Westerlo, and the stiff competition to crack the 18-man Olympics squad (25:57). The guys put Brenden Aaronson, Folarin Balogun and Jedi Robinson under the Americans Abroad spotlight (51:28), tip their hats to PSV's dancing Sporting Director Earnie Stewart, and discuss Tim Howard's U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame induction, Lionel Messi's six-goal contributions and much more (62:55)! In this deep cut from 2012, we are searching for platonic ideals longing for completion, engaged in epic quests for holy grails in science, linguistics, and world peace. And along the way, we'll meet the dreamers and measure just how impossible their dreams are. First: a perfect moment. On day 86 of a 3-month trek to and from the South Pole, adventurer Aleksander Gamme (https://zpr.io/ryaJzt5vaNTZ) discovered something he'd stashed under the ice at the start of his trip. He wasn't expecting such a rush of happiness in that cold, hungry instant, but he hit the bliss jackpot.Producer Tim Howard (https://zpr.io/bfxEEMYHf5vT) brings us the incredible and tragic story of Charles Bliss -- the man that inspired this show. As Charles's friend Richard Ure and writer Arika Okrent (https://zpr.io/3gjsdSePpQbG) explain, Bliss believed that war was often caused by the misuse of language. Having lived through the hell of Nazi concentration camps, he set about creating the perfect language, based on symbols and logic. Years later, Shirley McNaughton accidentally discovered it, and started using it to communicate with her students -- kids with cerebral palsy who quickly picked up the language and made it their own. At first, Charles was thrilled...until he started to feel his original dream of saving the world was slipping from his fingers. And finally, co-host Latif Nasser (https://zpr.io/pJsnQSYWJLTe) explains how, on a cold, snowy farm in Vermont in 1880, a kid named Wilson Bentley put a snowflake under a microscope and started a lifelong quest to capture perfection. In this episode, first aired in 2014, we examine three very different kinds of black boxes — spaces where we know what's going in, we know what's coming out, but can't see what happens in that in-between space. From the darkest parts of metamorphosis to a sixty-year-old secret among magicians, and the nature of consciousness itself, we shine some light on three questions. But for each, we contend with an answerless space, leaving just enough room for the mystery and magic… always wondering what's inside the Black Box.
