Joanne Lara, M.A., addresses the problem of unemployment in the special needs and disabled communities and what we can do to change those statistics and put the odds in favor of those populations. She shares ideas and tools for getting young people on the right track to employment and discusses the programs and services offered by Autism Works Now! and Glorious Pies, a work program operated by young people on the autism spectrum.

Joanne Lara is a Special Education Expert & Employment Advocate. An estimated 1 in 68 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism,according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She tells us that 50,000 youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder graduate public schools each year and 80 percent remain unemployed. And Joanne says the solution is simple She created "Autism Works Now" an organization providing workplace readiness skills to teens and young adults with Autism. The goal is to incorporate this education into existing classes, but to create more vocational programs for these young people. The working model already exists in California. www.autismworksnow.org
