Originally from Kansas City, Kansas, Dee Wallace has worked as an author, teacher, dancer, and actress in film, television, and stage for over 40 years. Her career began in New York, where she studied with famous acting legend Uta Hagen before moving to Los Angeles, where she found her mentor, Charles Conrad. Dee is a true tour de force in the industry, working with countless producers and directors and some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Wes Craven, Joe Dante, Lewis Teague, Stephen King, Blake Edwards, and Rob Zombie. Her many film credits include “The Hills Have Eyes,” “The Howling,” “Cujo,” “Secret Admirer,” “The Frighteners,” “10” and of course, her role as Mary in Steven Spielberg's “E.T., The Extraterrestrial.” With over 280 TV movie and film credits on her resume, Dee Wallace is quite possibly the most active woman in entertainment. Dee's important message to the world is: Love yourself beyond anyone or anything else. Love yourself so much that you can't do anything that doesn't make you love yourself more. She began her channeled healing work over twenty years ago when she dropped to her knees after her husband's sudden death and asked for a way we could “heal ourselves.” Seconds later, she received her first message: use the light within you to heal yourself. She has passionately been teaching the art of self-creation ever since. Dee is a strong advocate for accepting (at an early age) our own magnificence and power in a positive, loving way. Her most recent book, “Born,” expands the concepts of Law of Attraction exponentially and simplifies everything you think you know about the power of Self-Creation. “Born” is a powerful book about how Spirituality, Brain Science, and Religion teach the same principles and how you can easily use them to create your life. She offers monthly webinars on a variety of creation subjects. Dee also conducts private sessions from her home in Woodland Hills, California via phone and in person. As a much sought after speaker, Dee has spoken at numerous national and international venues, appeared on every major news and talk show, and been featured on E! True Hollywood Stories and Oprah. JONES.SHOW is a weekly podcast featuring host Randall Kenneth Jones (author, speaker & creative communications consultant) and Susan C. Bennett (the original voice of Siri). More than 700 athletes finished the race.   The first across the finish line was Alex Whetman of Riverton, Utah. It took him 9 hours, 11 minutes, 17 seconds to swim 1.2 miles in Auke Lake, bike 112 miles on Glacier Highway and run a full 26-mile marathon through the Mendenhall Valley.   Liz Cullen of Gibson, British Columbia, was the top female finisher with a time of 10 hours, 23 minutes, 3 seconds.   The first person from Juneau to finish was Will Coleman, who was 14th overall. Beth Gollin was Juneau's first female finisher and 13th female overall.   John Bursell was Juneau's second finisher. He has completed several Ironman races in the past, and met his goal this time to qualify for the Ironman World Championship event in Hawaii in October.   “It was a great experience overall,” he said. “I think Ironman did a great job. I was super-impressed and proud of Juneau. You know, the way people turned out — the support was incredible, the volunteers were incredible. And we heard that over and over again from people who came from out of town to compete. This was basically the most supportive community they've ever raced in.”   Bursell said locals volunteered, loaned out their own personal bikes, opened up their homes to house athletes and even offered free car rides around town. According to a press release from Ironman, more than 1,400 people volunteered.   The event had a lot of challenges. Race officials cut the swim portion in half, due to the cold water temperatures in Auke Lake.   Before the race even began, logistics issues drove down turnout. In a press release, Ironman said “approximately 1,000” athletes came to Juneau for the event. An official list dated from April had identified more than 1,300 participants.   Juneau's destination marketing organization, Travel Juneau, worked closely with race organizers. Executive Director Liz Perry said there will be a full debrief to work on making the second Ironman Alaska event go smoother. Perry said there's a three-year contract, meaning Ironman Alaska will be back in Juneau in 2023 and 2024.   What's New in the 303:   XTERRA USA Championship returns to Colorado in August 2023 The 22nd annual XTERRA USA Championship off-road triathlon will return to Beaver Creek Resort in conjunction with a community festival in Avon, Colorado, on August 25-27, 2023.   XTERRA will host full-distance, sprint, relay, and beginner-friendly off-road triathlons along with trail runs, demo events, and a variety of activities for the family. This is followed by ‘a fun, up-and-down, 16-mile mountain bike' – finishing with a 6-mile trail run through the aspens and into the village square.   The weekend of events is supported by partners from the Town of Avon, Beaver Creek Resort, US Forest Service, The Cycle Effect, and Walking Mountains Science Center.   “We enjoyed collaborating with XTERRA and their use of Nottingham Lake and Park, and the Performance Pavilion really showcased Avon,” said Danita Dempsey, the Culture, Arts & Special Event Manager for the Town of Avon. “We are thrilled to have them back.”   Upcoming Multisport Events in Colorado (runningintheusa.com) Upcoming Classic Runs in Colorado (runningintheusa.com)   Video of the week: RACE DAY RECAP! *1st ever IRONMAN Alaska*   Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! As leaders in the value-based care movement, we must think about the synergism between lifestyle medicine and traditional Western medicine. The tenets of lifestyle medicine force us to think more holistically about medical treatment and prevention.  Under this construct, “Sleep is Medicine” because poor sleep is linked to obesity, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and dementia.  “Exercise is Medicine” because of its impact on a healthy heart, mind, and body.  “Love is Medicine” because mindfulness and gratitude is the key to peace and equanimity. And lastly, “Food is Medicine” because a whole food plant-based diet is proven to improve every aspect of health.  These four time-tested tenets encompass the SELF Principle of lifestyle medicine promoted by Dr. Sean Hashmi. Sean Hashmi, MD, is the adult weight management lead for Southern California Kaiser Permanente. He is a board certified Internist, Nephrologist and Obesity Medicine Specialist practicing at Kaiser Permanente, Woodland Hills, California. In this role as Regional Director for Clinical Nutrition and Weight Management at Kaiser Permanente, Southern California, he's responsible for developing a comprehensive obesity management strategy involving lifestyle medicine and obesity medicine for the 4.6 million members that Kaiser Permanente serves. He is driven by a lifelong commitment to be of service to others. He also provides evidence-based health, nutrition, and wellness research through his nonprofit organization, SELF Principle. In this episode, you will learn how Sleep, Exercise, Love, and Food (SELF) translate into hope. And hope is the most powerful thing we can possibly have in health care. With hope, we can transform our broken “sick care” system to a true health care system.  And in doing so, we will win this Race to Value.   Episode Bookmarks: 01:30 Background and Introduction to Dr. Sean Hashmi 04:30 Life-defining experiences and personal challenges that led to the practice of lifestyle medicine 06:30 Dr. Hashmi's Personal Why:  HOPE 08:30 “The greatest way to be selfish is to do something kind for someone.” 09:00 How a lack of financial resources led to a lack of healthcare access for Dr. Hashmi's sister 09:45 Lessons in lifestyle medicine learned from his own wife's health issues 10:45 The American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Dr. Hashmi's SELF Principle 11:00 “Sleep, Exercise, Love, and Food translate into hope. Inside Appalachia
From Pittsburgh To Georgia To Shenandoah, We Asked ‘What Is Appalachia?' Here's What You Said

Inside Appalachia

What is Appalachia? This week, we're re-airing a December 2021 episode that seeks to answer this question, with stories from Mississippi to Pittsburgh.  Appalachia connects mountainous parts of the South, the Midwest, the Rust Belt, even the Northeast. Politically, it encompasses 423 counties across 13 states — West Virginia is the only state entirely inside Appalachia.   That leaves so much room for geographic and cultural variation. This week, we ask people from five Appalachian states if they feel like they're in Appalachia.   Mississippi Bob Owens, locally known as 'Pop Owens', standing in front of his watermelon stand outside New Houlka, Miss. Pop said he was aware that Mississippi is part of Appalachia, but that no one in the state would consider themselves Appalachian. Caitlin Tan/WVPB Bob Owens is a watermelon farmer outside New Houlka, in the northeastern part of Mississippi. Owens said he was aware that Mississippi is part of Appalachia, but that no one in the state would consider themselves Appalachian.  Shenandoah Valley  In the 1960s, while some localities were clamoring to get into Appalachia, on the eastern edge of the region some lawmakers fought to keep their counties outside the boundaries, including politicians in Roanoke, Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Appalachian Studies associate professor Emily Satterwhite said explaining to her students why some counties in Virginia are included in Appalachia, but others aren't is confusing.  Pittsburgh  Appalachia's largest city is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When we asked people from that city to tell us if they consider it a part of Appalachia, about half said no.  “I definitely do not feel that I am Appalachian culturally,” said Mark Jovanovich, who grew up just outside Pittsburgh's city limits in the Woodland Hills area. “Personally, I would consider the city of Pittsburgh is sort of like a mini New York City. I guess we'd probably be lumped in as like a Rust Belt city, which makes enough sense, but definitely not Appalachian culturally.” Writer Brian O'Neill disagrees. He wrote a book called “The Paris of Appalachia: Pittsburgh in the Twenty-First Century.”  What Do You Think? How about you? Do you call yourself an Appalachian? Why or why not?
