Watch our movie, "Apple Cinema" Here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qdc3Nts-0S4&t=0s -- Wes Plate = real deal demon. Before I ran my 100 I watched Wes' videos religiously and I was pumped to have him on the podcast. Outside of attempting four (yes four) 200 mile races in 6 months this year, Wes also developed a plugin for Final Cut Pro X and Adobe called Automatic Duck which is likely a life changing software for most of you guys. Great guy, super smart, I hope you enjoy. His YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/wplate We discussed: - His videos - Coming back from alcoholism to running ultras - Developing Automatic Duck - Channeling obsessive behavior into productive action - The Triple Crown of 200 mile races and his attempt at it this year --- Follow Conor Holway: @conorholway GDP Website: http://goldendeer.productions

Welcome back to OWC RADiO with your host, Cirina Catania! Today we share the story of an incredibly brave, courageous, and kind person, Wes Plate, who enjoyed major success in the tech world, overcame his personal demons - alcoholism and depression, and now runs ultramarathons! He is a winner on all counts! He not only survived, he became an elite athlete who runs ultramarathons such as the Moab 240 and the Cocodona 250.  Wes is someone who is well-known in the tech world, and he hasn't shared the details of his personal story until recently.  He remains a dear friend to us and we are proud of him.  How did all this happen and how did he win this difficult personal battle? For many years, he and his father developed translation products that made post-production easier for all of us.   Their company Automatic Duck, was a staple at all major tech industry events. By 2011, Wes and his Dad had gone to work with Adobe. Wes eventually moved to Apple as one of the key members of the ProApps team and recently left Apple to pursue new adventures. Cirina Catania talked with him about his tech career and his races. Here's a link to his latest documentary filmed during the Cocodona 250 race. It is fascinating! “It’s all about how you get to the starting line. That’s the real story.” – Wes Plate There aren’t many of us working 12 + hours a day in a dark room in post-production that think about running 240-mile ultra-marathons. We have enough to worry about on a daily basis, whether it’s building an at home work station (and fumbling with complicated WFH workflows) or learning new skills to weather the market during this pandemic, or chasing after our kids while simultaneously home-schooling them (and desperately trying to keep them off screens all day long). The last thing on our minds is training for an ultra endurance marathon. Today’s guest, Wes Plate, didn’t start out with such a lofty goal either. Wes is a former editor turned software developer for Apple who works on the team developing Final Cut Pro X, so he’s no stranger to working long hours. He was a self-proclaimed workaholic and an alcoholic who hit rock bottom in 2007, weighing 240 pounds. After checking himself into rehab (after hitting rock bottom at a family Christmas party), he knew he had to get his life back in order. In today’s conversation, you’ll hear the challenges and hard lessons that Wes learned on his journey from being a depressed, overworked alcoholic to a lean and happy Ultramarathoner. He shares the secrets and strategies he uses to overcome injuries and obstacles that life presents along the way. And he speaks in-depth about the mindsets that have led to his transformation into a happy and healthy father, professional, and athlete. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a rut and hopeless to get back on track, Wes’ story will provide inspiration and motivation to get you off the couch and onto your own starting line – however you choose to define it. His story of hitting rock bottom after gaining weight and putting his mental and physical health on the back burner which led to checking himself into rehab for alcohol addiction. How he used a Garmin watch and telephone poles to kick-start a running routine. How he used small goals to build habits to improve his health. How he signed up for 5K races to get fit enough to join Fitness in Post. The importance of nutrition and hydration after finishing his first 50K race and barely being able to walk afterward. The real story is how you get to the starting line and not about how you perform in the race. How he sees himself as a normal guy, not a super athlete that just wants to do hard things step by step. How saying yes to running led to a domino effect of life improvements like meeting his running heroes and being part of the Ultrarunning community Why he’s learned to treat failure as just another piece of information to learn from The similarities between training for Ultra marathons and the creative process Useful Resources Mentioned: Wesplate.com Wes’ Blog of his recovery Our Generous Sponsors: This episode is made possible for you by Ergodriven, the makers of the Topo Mat, my #1 recommendation for anyone who stands at their workstation. In 2001 he co-founded Automatic Duck, a software company that became well-known for making timeline translation plug-ins for Avid, FCP and AE users. Today he works at Apple as a Product Designer in the Pro Apps group. Wes also edits with select clients on commercials, main title sequences and other short form projects. Wes Plate is no stranger to adversity. On the surface it may appear that he is incredibly successful having founded the software company Automatic Duck, as well as worked for companies such as Adobe and Pinnacle, not to mention years of editing commercials and main title sequences for network television shows. On top of all that Wes is currently a product designer for a little tiny tech startup you may have heard of called Apple. Beyond Wes’ professional success is his personal achievements. If you scan through Wes’ Facebook or Instagram profiles you’ll see numerous pictures of him holding medals for marathons and ultra-marathons like they’re no big thing. But the story that you won’t see on Wes’ social media pages or on his website’s about page are the years of living with obesity, eating garbage, and worst of all living with alcoholism that not only almost cost him his family but also his life. In this episode we discuss how Wes went from a high school athlete to being hospitalized for alcohol abuse in his early 30’s, to then running his first Ultra Marathon (50K) with many half-marathons in between. His amazing journey will inspire you to find the strength to achieve your own health and wellness goals, regardless of the obstacles in your way. Last night I attended a combined Final Cut Pro user group and Avid user group meeting at WGBH in Boston. There were many great presenters as is usually the case, but here I present a brief presentation by Wes Plate of Automatic Duck. He's giving a demo of a couple of his company's FCP plugins that allow the editor to transfer whole sequences flawlessly between FCP & Avid. If you want to see more go to the Automatic Duck Site and in particular, check out this demo of the products in action. Great stuff, Thanks for making the trip out from Seattle Wes.

I've finally gotten a handle on some of my recording tools, such as the Mbox2 mixer and my condenser mic. I hope you've noticed an improvement in the audio quality. I'm still working on production quality, but I got a helping hand from Erica at CDIA, who helps maintain the audio and classroom maintenance for the Recording arts program at school. She demonstrated that my problems were due to my incompetence and not the equipment manufacturers. She also gave me a quick but thorough tour of Pro Tools. Sometime soon I'll take a few trips into Pro Tools country to record a few episodes.Another problem I had was the absence of a mic stand and so I made one out of coat hanger and I used the leftover wire to create a pop filter which keeps the mic clean and softens annoying plosives. This weeks classes continues the module on learning Avid. Since we have already covered Final Cut Pro earlier in the program everyone was wondering how you work the two together in a single workflow. Avid and Apple don't make it easy, but thanks to software plug-ins from Automatic Duck, and a bunch of money, you can make them friends.I continue the saga of a filmmaking project I'm involved in with classmate Laura creating a promotional video for the Huntington Theater in Boston. We're shooting audience reactions following a performance of the play 39 Steps. Finally the class gets to attend a screening of the documentary This is Nollywood, produced by some of CDIA's own, Franco Sacchi, Aimee Corrigan as well as renowned National Geographic photographer Robert Caputo. You may not see it in a theater near you, but you'll find it as a DVD online. If you're curious about the exciting filmmaking scene that is developing in West Africa you should check it out.
