Often when we walk into recovery, we experience revelations on how dysfunctional our family system was growing up. Growing up in these family systems we can take on dysfunctional roles that can be helpful to understand why we do what we do, but ultimately move us to do something different in health. In this episode, Rodney Holmstrom, global field director of celebrate recovery, will walk us through some common roles and the functions of those roles toward ultimately understanding how celebrate Recovery can bring healing toward a new healthy future.
Send us a textComfort is slowly killing us, but we don't even recognize it as an addiction. What happens when society's most celebrated coping mechanisms become our greatest chains? In this transformative episode, I pull back the curtain on the socially acceptable addictions that hide in plain sight: food and alcohol. These aren't stereotypical addictions – they're the wine moms at PTA meetings, the neighbors hosting barbecues, the coworkers bringing donuts, all numbing themselves with substances we collectively celebrate. The neuroscience tells a clear story: food and alcohol hijack the same brain pathways, creating powerful dopamine loops that keep us coming back despite the consequences. I share my personal journey through these dependencies, revealing how childhood conditioning, identity attachment, and cultural pressure maintain our comfortable prison of numbing behaviors. The most dangerous lie? That moderation proves we're not addicted.Breaking free requires more than willpower – it demands replacing numbing habits with regulation practices and confronting the emotions we're desperately avoiding: shame, loneliness, rejection, and boredom. My two months on the carnivore diet after years of sobriety have shown me what clarity and presence truly feel like, but the path wasn't easy. When you change, expect resistance from everyone comfortable with your former self. The ultimate goal isn't just avoiding substances but creating a life so fulfilling you don't need to escape from it. Take one step today – whether that's seeking community support, establishing accountability, or simply choosing presence over numbness. Subscribe to join me on this journey toward authentic living, and remember: there's nothing more powerful than building a life worth staying present for. If you've been trying to change so that you can feel ready, healed, better and in control, this episode will explain how it's possible to feel those things now–before you've figured everything out. I'm going to explain how to access your higher self—not as a future fantasy, or as someone you'll be someday when you get everything right, but as a real-time frequency shift grounded in neuroscience, nervous system regulation, and the principles of manifestation.. You'll learn: Why your higher self isn't someone you become—it's someone you tune into How to use quantum physics to attract positive thoughts and feelings that alter your reality The role your subconscious mind plays in your brainwave states and vibrational coherence between your heart and brain A simple daily practice using breath, emotion, and intention to align your internal frequency This episode blends science and soul. I'll show you how to reprogram your internal signal so that your reality reflects who you already are—not who you're still trying to become. We talk about shame a lot in the recovery process, but what does it look like to have a posture of shamelessness in our share time through open share, small, and step study small groups? Is there a line between being real and reckless? In this podcast, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery, will unpack some things to consider when we are sharing in small groups with Celebrate Recovery, and how dangerous it can be moving from a posture of humility, honor, and truth spoken in love to a posture of shamelessness for the sake of shock value or self-promotion.

Sonny Von Cleveland: Vocalizing Our Pain to Heal | The Hopeaholics Podcast Sonny Von Cleveland—a man who turned a life marked by profound trauma into a beacon of hope and redemption. From a childhood scarred by molestation beginning at age three, a felony charge at seven, and a harrowing prison sentence at 16, Sonny's story is one of survival against unimaginable odds. He opens up about enduring a violent prison environment, including a brutal assault in his first week, and how he adopted a gang mentality to survive, only to face a pivotal moment in solitary confinement in 2004 after a drug-fueled crime spree landed him back behind bars. A mentor's persistent question—“Why are you so angry?”—sparked a 19-month transformation, teaching Sonny emotional intelligence, forgiveness, and the power of vocalizing pain through writing forgiveness letters and reading Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Emerging from prison in 2016 at age 35, Sonny built a music career, signed with Ferocious Records, and later pivoted to YouTube success, only to face new challenges, including betrayal and the loss of his channel. Now married to a woman he met through a podcast, Sonny runs Frisky Business, the only cat café in the Coachella Valley, and the Von Cleveland Foundation, while speaking at schools and juvenile halls to break cycles of abuse. He shares his upcoming 22-city U.S. tour, “Conversations of Redemption,” starting July 1, where he'll explore city traumas and invite people to share their stories, partnered with Operation Light Shine to combat child sex abuse material. As leaders, it's tempting to buy into the false narrative that once we've been in recovery for a while, or stepped into leadership, we somehow have "arrived" and Open Share is no longer needed. That's for "those people" and not for me. But, as leaders, what are the things that we need to be aware of and what's the value of our being active and wise participants in Open Share? How does this correlate with shepherding those God has called us to? In this podcast, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery, walks us through some things to consider if we struggle in this area as a leader.

Rob Lohman's battle with addiction began at just 14 years old, fueled by a family history of alcoholism. Throughout his teenage and young adult years, he lived a chaotic, chameleon-like existence, losing his true identity to drinking and drug use. Despite the mistakes he made during those years, Rob credits his journey with giving him the powerful stories he now uses to help others move from addiction to recovery. One night, while drinking heavily at a bar in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Rob experienced a moment of divine intervention. He heard the words, "You're done," in the middle of the crowd and later, at home, came within seconds of taking his own life. It was the nudge of his dog, Jake, and a flood of thoughts about his family that saved him. The next day, Rob reached out for help, attended his first AA meeting, and has remained sober for 18 years, building a new life filled with family, purpose, and faith. Sober since 2001, Rob Lohman helps people suffering from substance abuse to find freedom from addiction and incarceration. It's been said that alcohol is the only drug that, if you don't take it, people think something is wrong with you. And, I know firsthand what it's like for alcohol use and abuse to take root in your life. My guest today, James Swanwick makes the case that there is nothing good that comes from drinking alcohol – even in moderation and on occasion. Today, we talk about how quickly it can compromise your quality of life, production, and relationships, why he views alcohol as nothing more than “Attractively Packaged Poison,” how you can adopt the alcohol-free lifestyle, the importance of addressing the internal root of addiction, and how facing your own insecurities, although uncomfortable can help you crack the code.
