Send us a text#299 - When I think of really long ultra races, a few runners' names come to mind. When I think of those long races and the runners who film them, there are only a handful who have the prowess to handle running a complicated single track and filming at the same time! Wes Plate is one of those runners. It's taken him a while to make those videos we look forward to and I for one am so happy he does! Today, he talks about his journey, his process and more about his love of the very long run! All links for Wes are on the show website! In the latest heart-stirring episode of HappyCast, join Stephanie as she takes on the formidable Copper Kings 100, an awe-inspiring mountain race crafted by ultra-runner Wes Plate. Set in the picturesque town of Butte, Montana, this race is not for the faint of heart—marked by its "fatass" style, it challenges runners with no aid stations and no course markers, demanding resilience and raw endurance.Central to this episode and the race itself is Butte's towering landmark, Our Lady of the Rockies. This 90-foot statue of the Virgin Mary, perched atop the Continental Divide, stands as a beacon of hope and perseverance for the runners. Conceived as a tribute to all women, especially mothers, the statue overlooks the city from over 8,500 feet above sea level, embodying the spirit of community and undying faith. As Stephanie navigates the unmarked trails of the Copper Kings 100, the imposing silhouette of Our Lady of the Rockies serves not only as a literal landmark guiding her through the night but also as a metaphorical guide through the challenges of the race. With Richard at the helm as crew and Shashi setting the pace, the episode delves into the trials and tribulations of nighttime navigation, the unexpected hurdles after the sun sets, and the mental battle that ensues deep into the endurance test.Through candid storytelling, Stephanie explores how the serene yet formidable presence of Our Lady of the Rockies inspired her to push beyond her limits. The episode also teases the future of the Copper Kings 100, questioning whether it will retain its grassroots "fatass" charm or evolve into a more commercialized race. Listeners are encouraged to stay tuned to Ultrasignup for updates on this unique mountain challenge.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. This week, on a special episode of the HappyCast, we sit down with Wes Plate, the “mid-pack elite” runner from Washington state. Wes recently became one of only five people this year to complete the “Grand Slam of 200s”, which includes completing Cocodona 250 and the Triple Crown of 200s (Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and Moab 240) all in the same year. Wes is also known for his media presence online, and there is a chance that you've seen one of his trail running videos on YouTube, especially if you've ever shown interest in doing a 200. Wes creates some of the best, most detailed, and most viewed trail running videos around, and they help paint an incredible overall picture of the races that he does. For this episode, Wes talks about his foray into trail running, his pursuit of wanting to run longer, and the preparation, desire, and challenges of doing 200 milers. He also discusses recommendations and gives out some pointers for those thinking about doing their first 200 miler. And trust us, the distance isn't as scary as it appears. Wes has been an inspiration and motivation to many others looking to do longer distances, so we hope you enjoy this episode! Episode 12 of the “What's Your Why Podcast” with Wes Plate is out now. He is a wild man and a savage model of what the human body can do. He regularly runs 200+ mile races. And is shooting to run 4 of them this running season. He is a videographer and has passionately pursued this since he was in early high school. When he sets his mind on something it seems that that is all that matters until the task is complete. In the interview, we see this with both running and his career. On top of all that he shares some great stories about growing up, coming into videography, and his path to becoming a savage ultra runner. “It’s all about how you get to the starting line. That’s the real story.” – Wes Plate There aren’t many of us working 12 + hours a day in a dark room in post-production that think about running 240-mile ultra-marathons. We have enough to worry about on a daily basis, whether it’s building an at home work station (and fumbling with complicated WFH workflows) or learning new skills to weather the market during this pandemic, or chasing after our kids while simultaneously home-schooling them (and desperately trying to keep them off screens all day long). The last thing on our minds is training for an ultra endurance marathon. Today’s guest, Wes Plate, didn’t start out with such a lofty goal either. Wes is a former editor turned software developer for Apple who works on the team developing Final Cut Pro X, so he’s no stranger to working long hours. He was a self-proclaimed workaholic and an alcoholic who hit rock bottom in 2007, weighing 240 pounds. After checking himself into rehab (after hitting rock bottom at a family Christmas party), he knew he had to get his life back in order. In today’s conversation, you’ll hear the challenges and hard lessons that Wes learned on his journey from being a depressed, overworked alcoholic to a lean and happy Ultramarathoner. He shares the secrets and strategies he uses to overcome injuries and obstacles that life presents along the way. And he speaks in-depth about the mindsets that have led to his transformation into a happy and healthy father, professional, and athlete. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a rut and hopeless to get back on track, Wes’ story will provide inspiration and motivation to get you off the couch and onto your own starting line – however you choose to define it. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here’s What You’ll Learn: Wes’ experience working for apple on the team that makes Final Cut Pro X How Wes balances a demanding job for Apple with moonlighting as an Ultra Marathon runner. His story of hitting rock bottom after gaining weight and putting his mental and physical health on the back burner which led to checking himself into rehab for alcohol addiction. How he used a Garmin watch and telephone poles to kick-start a running routine. How he used small goals to build habits to improve his health. How he signed up for 5K races to get fit enough to join Fitness in Post. The importance of nutrition and hydration after finishing his first 50K race and barely being able to walk afterward. The real story is how you get to the starting line and not about how you perform in the race. How he sees himself as a normal guy, not a super athlete that just wants to do hard things step by step. How saying yes to running led to a domino effect of life improvements like meeting his running heroes and being part of the Ultrarunning community Why he’s learned to treat failure as just another piece of information to learn from The similarities between training for Ultra marathons and the creative process Useful Resources Mentioned: Wesplate.com Wes’ Blog of his recovery Our Generous Sponsors: This episode is made possible for you by Ergodriven, the makers of the Topo Mat, my #1 recommendation for anyone who stands at their workstation. Wes Plate is no stranger to adversity. On the surface it may appear that he is incredibly successful having founded the software company Automatic Duck, as well as worked for companies such as Adobe and Pinnacle, not to mention years of editing commercials and main title sequences for network television shows. On top of all that Wes is currently a product designer for a little tiny tech startup you may have heard of called Apple. Beyond Wes’ professional success is his personal achievements. If you scan through Wes’ Facebook or Instagram profiles you’ll see numerous pictures of him holding medals for marathons and ultra-marathons like they’re no big thing. But the story that you won’t see on Wes’ social media pages or on his website’s about page are the years of living with obesity, eating garbage, and worst of all living with alcoholism that not only almost cost him his family but also his life. In this episode we discuss how Wes went from a high school athlete to being hospitalized for alcohol abuse in his early 30’s, to then running his first Ultra Marathon (50K) with many half-marathons in between. His amazing journey will inspire you to find the strength to achieve your own health and wellness goals, regardless of the obstacles in your way. He's giving a demo of a couple of his company's FCP plugins that allow the editor to transfer whole sequences flawlessly between FCP & Avid. If you want to see more go to the Automatic Duck Site and in particular, check out this demo of the products in action. Great stuff, Thanks for making the trip out from Seattle Wes.
