Charles Burnett, Academy Award Winning Filmmaker

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2025

Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers.  His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts,  was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution.  It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own.  I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. Karen Bolt, the Development Executive for actor and activist Danny Glover, and an accomplished Independent Producer, is a close friend of our OWC RADiO host, Cirina Catania. Over the years, Karen and Cirina have collaborated on several of Mr. Glover's projects, including insightful interviews with Bob Moses head of the Algebra Project in San Francisco and one of the key instigators of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. They also shared memorable experiences in Salt Lake City during the filming of "Just a Dream," directed by Danny Glover. Karen's impressive portfolio includes award-winning short films like "The Secret Weapon: Yesterday is Today" and "The McHenry Trial-Don't Judge a Kid by Their Hoodie," which have collectively garnered over 147 awards. In this episode, she shares invaluable advice for aspiring independent producers, drawing from her extensive experience in the industry. Cirina says, "As a poignant aside, after we hung up, I realized that our conversation reminded me of the fact that it has been 60 years since the Civil Rights Act was passed—a milestone closely tied to the legacy of Bob Moses, a key figure in that movement. We'll dive deeper into that topic in a future episode." Thank you for tuning in to OWC RADiO. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and many thanks to Other World Computing for sponsoring our show. Cirina's company, Catania Studios, where this interview was recorded, manages literally hundreds of terabytes on RAID arrays and  individual hard drives…and their main server. Larry O’Connor on Regenerative Agriculture

OWC's Larry O'Connor, and Other World Computing, are committed to helping us understand regenerative agriculture. He explains why in this interview with host, Cirina Catania. Larry O'Connor is more than the founder and CEO of Other World Computing. He donates much of his time and a sizable percentage of the profits from OWC's business endeavors on issues that he believes need to be addressed in the world. He helps the planet and everyone and everything that inhabits it with his initiatives in support of non-profits such as "Kiss the Ground," and Charity Water. We enjoyed this interview because it is a discourse on regenerative agriculture, which is a new way to farm and which the movie exec produced by Larry, “Kiss the Ground,” highlighted during and following its release. A new sequel, “Common Ground,” has recently been released and we encourage you to search for it in your neighborhoods or by going to Kisstheground.com for more information. What is regenerative agriculture and why is it important to all of us?  This kind of subject is always interesting, and as we dig further, we find that perhaps the old way of tilling the soil may very well NOT be the best for soil health. This type of farming places emphasis on that health, which in turn produces more food with high nutritional value. According to proponents of this theory, more carbon is stored in the ground, and biodiversity flourishes. That is good for the farmers, for us, and for Mother Earth. So, take a break from your tech tasks, from scrolling, and listen in to one of our country's top business entrepreneurs as he discusses why he gets involved in films such as “Kiss the Ground,” and “Common Ground.” Tune in for another fascinating interview with OWC's Larry O'Connor. “Happy Like Joplin” Movie from Director Jean-Baptiste Mauduit

"Happy Like Joplin," is a movie from French director Jean-Baptiste Mauduit and we wanted to share it with you. Mauduit says, "I always wanted to make a short that encompassed all forms of filmmaking from live action to animation. During the development phase of 'Happy Like Joplin, "' I could see how the internal expressive nature of the characters allowed for these stylistic choices." A stone carver by trade, Mauduit is a self-taught filmmaker. He watched tutorials from Mark Spencer on line to learn Motion, downloaded Affinity Photo and Procreate for his iPad, filmed with Blackmagic cameras, and a work of art was born. Truly an independent film, he operated on a near zero budget with a crew of two. This is truly a labor of love. Listen in and learn a lot about filmmaking and life. The film will be coming out soon, but you can watch a trailer at the movie's website HERE. If you enjoy our podcast, please subscribe and tell all your friends about us! We love our listeners.
