So I'm going to suggest that Erica Stanford is on the right track with wanting to make it easier to deport criminals, but maybe she doesn't go far enough. So at the moment, the rules are that we cannot deport criminals if they've been here on a residence visa and they've been residents for more than 10 years. An example of this is the Mama Hooch brothers. These guys are not Kiwis. You know the ones I'm talking about, down in Christchurch. They're not Kiwis, they're Aussies and they don't have citizenship here, they don't have Kiwi passports. But even though they are two of the country's worst sexual offenders, we cannot deport them back to Australia because they've been here in New Zealand as residents for longer than 10 years. Now, Erica Stanford is proposing to change the rules so that that gets moved out to 20 years for anyone who's committed a serious crime like murder, rape, or manslaughter. Now I would say, scrap the time limit altogether. It doesn't matter how long you've been here - 20 years, 25 years, 30 years, 50 years. If you decide that you want to rape or kill someone, you go home and you lose the privilege of being here. Maybe we need to look outside of rape and murder and manslaughter as well. Perhaps we have lower time limits for other crimes - but further than 10 years, if you know what I mean. We take a line on those crimes, we push it out a little bit further. Because the key here is that it is a privilege to be in New Zealand and not a right. And I suppose what I'm suggesting is that we take a leaf out of Australia's book and get rid of other countries' criminals. As much as I don't always love what what Australia is doing, what I love a lot less is looking after other countries' criminals. So I reckon no time limit on those big crimes. Pacific advocates say a proposed law change for out-of-hours immigration visits, like dawn raids, doesn't go far enough. The contentious enforcement practice involves immigration officers searching homes for people they have reasonable grounds to believe are liable for deportation between 6pm and 8am. It has been criticised for targeting Pacific people, particularly in the wake of the dawn raids era. Teuila Fuatai reports.
When Jesus heals the man possessed by demons in the country of the Gerasenes, the man begs to follow him, but Jesus tells him to go home and share what God has done.In this sermon, we're reminded that God's transforming power is not only real but also deeply personal. The miracle isn't just that the man was healed—it's that he became the first apostle to the Gentiles, sent not far away, but home.Do we believe Jesus still works this way today? And if so, are we willing to begin by letting him transform what's closest to us—our own homes, our relationships, and our hearts?
Chelli Aphra has returned in the character's third namesake series, as new writer Cherish Chen takes the popular comic-created protagonist in a familiar yet remarkably original direction in Doctor Aphra -- Chaos Agent #1. I don't want to start on a bum note, but if you share my view that this country is in a hot mess financially, then this Budget is underwhelming, disappointing - you pick your epithet. It's called the growth Budget, but there's no growth in it. The only growth is a result of a tax incentive scheme which is a good idea - but doesn't go far enough. It lifts GDP by, get this, 1 percent over 20 years. What is that? Is that growth or a rounding error? In fact, the Budget is full of this kind of thing - good ideas that are only half baked. Cutting 18 and 19 year olds off the dole and making the parents taking responsibility is a great idea - but it's so full of loopholes, so you can see exactly how those kids are going to get around the rules and stay on the dole. Cutting the Government KiwiSaver contribution to rich people is exactly what should happen - but it should be cut to everyone. The gas exploration money is exactly what needs to happen - but it's tiny, a couple of hundred million dollars in an industry that talks in billions. Five billion dollars of savings and cuts - which is small. That's the same amount we rack up in interest payments on our debt in just 7 months. So if you were hoping for something to turn this ship around, something that supercharges growth or slashes spending or really gets us out of the financial trouble we're in - this is not it. This is a budget of good ideas that don't go far enough. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this heartfelt and dynamic episode of Inspiration Nation, Lee, Ryan, and Jose reunite to explore the timeless African proverb, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." With honesty and humor, the trio dives deep into the pros and cons of solo versus collaborative work, drawing on personal stories of control, ego, and growth. Ryan opens up about the challenges of delegation and trust while working abroad, Lee reflects on overcoming his control-freak tendencies, and Jose ties their journey back to the very roots of the podcast—demonstrating the power of going far together. The episode's central quote underscores the theme of growth through connection: "Achievement without connection often feels empty. When you grow with others, you create deeper meaning, stronger resilience, and lasting impact." Whether you're a leader, creator, or team member, this conversation is a potent reminder that real progress comes not from going it alone but from building with others.
I want to talk a little bit more about Nicola Willis' tight budget - I haven't changed my position from yesterday and I'm impressed at how little she's giving herself to play with. But the truth is, it doesn't go far enough - at all. Because understand this - that $1.3 billion that she's given herself in her operating allowance is new spending. As in, take last year's budget and now increase it by $1.3 billion. For context, Nicola Willis spent more money last year than Grant Robertson ever did in any of his budgets - and now she's adding another $1.3 billion to it. Now I understand that this is conventional politics - budgets increase every year. The last time it didn't, the last time we had a zero budget where we didn't add any more money was Bill English's 2011 budget - because we'd had the earthquake. But what that tells you is it's possible to not increase the spending - and I would argue that is exactly what we should be doing at the moment. Because we are in big financial trouble as a country. We are running structural deficits - that means we are spending more every year than we make. If it was a household, we'd be talking about a family spending more than they earn and running up the difference on credit cards every year - but still deciding every year to spend more. That's what we're doing. I think we need to cut big things. Now, I don't want to be accused of being a racist, so I'm reluctant to say publicly that we should cut the Ministry for Māori Development or the Ministry for Pacific Peoples - but I am a woman, so I'm very happy to say we should cut the Ministry for Women. Why do we need it? Why do we need a Ministry for the Environment and also a Department of Conservation? I could go on. But if we don't get real and start running smaller budgets where we spend within our means, something will have to give. And the thing every commentator out there seems to want to cut is your pension - because it's very expensive to the country. Now if I had a choice, I'd keep the pension and cut out nonsense like ministries we don't need and stop spending more every year than we did the last. Like I said, I'm impressed. Nicola Willis is going further than I thought she would - but not far enough if we're actually going to fix the country's books. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is it too late to say sorry? Do apologies for medical harm actually create change? The Canadian Medical Association recently issued an apology to Indigenous Peoples for the harms inflicted upon them by the medical system, acknowledging a history of racism, neglect, and abuse. In this crucial episode, we delve into the significance of this apology and explore what true transformative medical justice must entail for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada. Our esteemed guest, Dr. Jamaica Cass, a First Nation physician, brings her invaluable perspective to this vital conversation. We discuss the limitations of apologies without concrete action and the urgent need for systemic change that respects and upholds Indigenous sovereignty within healthcare. Dr. Cass sheds light on the necessary steps to dismantle colonial structures in medicine, foster culturally safe practices, and ensure equitable access to care that is self-determined by Indigenous communities. Join The Gritty Nurses as we unpack what accountability looks like beyond words, and envision a future where Indigenous health and well-being are centered through the recognition of their inherent rights and sovereignty in healthcare delivery. More About Dr. Cass A member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, Turtle Clan, Dr. Cass practices Indigenous Health as a primary care physician on-reserve at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. In addition, as an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University, she currently supervises both undergraduate clerks and family medicine residents. Dr. Cass completed her family medicine residency at the University of Calgary, where she served on the Indigenous Health Working Group in the department of Family Medicine. Prior to her residency, Dr. Cass spent four years in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she completed her Medical Doctorate at Tulane University. They also delve into Dr. Autry's recent testimony on the stakes of the in-space mineral supply chain, including relegating the U.S. to an economic backwater, and potentially existential threat to the US. They explore the big idea of Space Settlement, Millions of people living and working in space on new space stations, the surface Moon and Mars, and why we should populate Mars, and how China's decision to turn inward multiplied rather than solved their problems. They talk about the contribution of space toward our understanding of climate and the environment, and toward offering solutions, and Autry's contention that America can afford to have a future in space. They assess communism, authoritarianism, capitalism, billionaires, nuclear power, and the remarkable bipartisanship in space. They discuss how cooperation is boring and has resulted in very little comparative progress. They converse about NASA's tragic plans to trash the ISS, and alternatives for this tremendous piece of human heritage. They evaluate the progress of NASA's Artemis vs the tasking in the National Space Policy, and the historical reasons for its complexity and schedule delay, and concerns of a lack of urgency, and that the US may be losing in the race with China. Bridging on Dr. Autry's recent review of the Republican Platform space strategy, Greg discusses what is a vision worthy of our nation and what must be done to move forward. They conclude by discussing ways for individuals to get in involved in the Space Movement, including the National Space Society (NSS), Mars Society, Moon Village Association, and the open & welcoming nature of the Space Movement and ways to seek the education to become a space leader, such as University of Arizona's Thunderbird Executive Master of Global Management: Space Leadership Business and Policy. More of Dr. Autry's thinking can be found in his regular Forbes Science Column and Foreign Policy, and New Space Articles.
