Today's guest is someone who pushes limits—not just in distance, but in grit, landscape, and life. Meet David Calder.Dave calls Alberta's Rocky Mountains home now, but his journey begins on Canada's east coast. A native of Cape Breton, he's gone from coastal trails to alpine ridge-lines. On LinkedIn, he describes himself as an ultramarathoner living in the mountains—and occasionally “blowing stuff up” in his work as a driller/blaster at a nearby quarry. In today's episode, we'll dive into how David's background—his grit forged in two coasts—shapes his approach to ultra distance, resilience, terrain strategy, and life beyond finish lines. From hydrating alpine summits to pacing in storms, you'll hear how he thinks in kilometres, miles and meters, and why his path might challenge how you see what's possible.
You may feel pain in the body, but it really begins in the brain. To explain, Dr. Sanjay Gupta sits down at 92nd Street Y in New York to talk about his new book “It Doesn't Have to Hurt” with his friend and ultra-marathoner Rich Roll. They also discuss how our brains can create pain proactively and protectively. Plus, how memories might have something to do with your chronic pain – and how to move through, with, and past those painful reminders. I really enjoyed talking to him about the the 24-hr race called “Death by 5K”. (It started on 8 AM Sat and he ran till 8 AM Sunday)You are supposed to complete a 5K race every 2.5 hrs for 24 hours!! If you finished sooner than 2.5hrs, you can rest, eat etc. till the next start. As if this wasn't tough enough, the entire race is on asphalt, so it got really hot during the day.Even though I did track in middle school and like to run outside of school, this is beyond what I can imagine! His goal is to qualify for the Boston marathon and he has promised me a follow-up interview when he qualifies.I wish him all the best and would love to learn about his Boston experience. His dream-team dinner guest list is:- Ariana Grande (big fan!)- President JFK (wants to ask questions about things only he knows)- Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos (wants to know what it feels like to run such an impressive company)What did you think? Would you run a race like this?Email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com
Why is critical thinking important in choosing one's diet? Why (and how) are lifestyle and diet choices not binary? How do we make sense of all the conflicting diet information online? My guest joins me to discuss all this, and more. Dr. Jeyashree Krishnan is a computational scientist and data science consultant with a personal passion for ultramarathons and plant-based cooking. Jeyashree lives in Germany, and uses her knack for simplifying complex data to solve problems and help others understand intricate concepts. Her drive stems from a deep-seated curiosity and a love for learning. Coming from India and having pursued her Master's and PhD in Germany, Jeyashree brings a diverse range of experiences and insights to her work and daily life. She spends much of her free time diving into books and research papers, always eager to question and critically think about the world around her. Beyond her academic and professional pursuits, Jeyashree cherishes the challenges of ultramarathons, testing her limits with each race. In the kitchen, she loves to experiment with various cuisines, with a special fondness for spicy dishes. Cooking plant-based meals is more than just a hobby for her; it's a way to explore creative, healthy eating.
Addiction is a chronic condition that can affect many dimensions of our lives, including our physical and mental health, relationships, and overall wellness. The two primary forms of addiction are substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. While addiction is most notably associated with substance abuse, humans can also form addictive behaviors to a variety of things in our everyday lives. Some of the most common non-substance addictions include things such as gambling, sex, pornography, food, technology, and shopping.Addiction is treatable, but it is critical to seek help as soon as possible. For those struggling with the effects of substance abuse, nature therapy is an excellent supplement to other treatment options. Time in the natural world can reduce stress, create mindful awareness, improve physical fitness, and assist in alleviating withdrawal symptoms. Welcome to Episode Thirty-Seven of The Nature of Wellness Podcast. On this episode, we sat down with writer, speaker, ultra-endurance athlete, and recovering addict Charlie Engle. Charlie has a story worthy of a Hollywood biopic, from his issues with substance abuse, a stint in prison, being a producer on a top-rated TV show, and running 4500 miles across the Sahara Desert. He was documented in the film RUNNING THE SAHARA, which led to the creation of H2O Africa, now known as Water.org, co-founded by Matt Damon.Join us as we talk to Charlie about his personal and professional journey, how he credits time in the natural world with helping him stay sober for more than 30 years, and how we can adjust our treatment of addiction to incorporate more nature-based therapies.Charlie discusses his relationship with distance running, common misconceptions about addiction, and how harnessing an unwavering passion can lead to incredible results. "I am so grateful for the professional experiences that I've had, and so grateful for the incredible men in my life. But I feel like I've been the supporting character in my own life. I'm always 'Mark Zuckerberg's Sister' or 'Brent's Wife' or 'So-and-So's Mom.' Every achievement — even though I'm proud of it — is qualified by someone else. The moment I got to break the tape at the half marathon was the first moment in my entire life where I felt like the main character." Randi Zuckerberg is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, host of "Randi Zuckerberg Means Business" on SiriusXM Radio, a TV and theater producer, and a mom of three living in New York City. And yes, her last name is Zuckerberg. Randi is Mark Zuckerberg's sister, and was one of the first employees at Facebook. (She's credited with creating Facebook Live!) But "Mark Zuckerberg's Sister" isn't how Randi wants to be defined, and she has officially entered her Main Character Era — thanks to running.
