Throughout our lives we're constantly taught about 'stranger danger', but what if the person you should be most afraid of, isn't actually a stranger? 12-year-old Jan Broberg was abducted from her small town of Pocatello, Idaho in 1974 but a family friend, someone the Broberg's trusted. Jan was taken to Mexico, returned, and then kidnapped again almost two years later. Her story has quite a few twists and turns, and it's almost too crazy to believe. Content warning: child abuse, coercive control, stalking, kidnapping, sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, pedophilia, fraud, and suicide. Jan Broberg is a mother, actress, speaker, and advocate. When she was a young girl, she and her parents faced grooming and sexual abuse at the hands of a neighbor. The events that unfolded afterwards, which include two childhood abductions by the same man, are a clear example of grooming and the cyclical nature of abuse. However, all that she's done to heal since - which includes a book, a Netflix documentary entitled Abducted in Plain Sight, Peacock's scripted series called A Friend of the Family, her non-profit, podcast, and more - are also beautiful examples of resiliency and strength. Thus, we are so grateful she joined us today to share all that came next for her as a survivor and parent. Thank you Kitsch, for sponsoring this episode. Warning: This programme contains descriptions of mental and sexual abuse which you may find distressing. In the 1970s child sexual abuse was rarely talked about and for some people, barely understood. So when a trusted member of the community called Bob Berchtold inveigled himself into the Broberg family's lives, becoming like a second father to their three girls, nothing seemed out of place. Berchtold went on to kidnap 12-year-old Jan Broberg, twice, brainwashing her with an elaborate conspiracy that aliens were in charge and the world would end unless she had a baby with him. Decades on, Jan and her mother Mary Ann talk frankly to Jo Fidgen about how the abuser fooled the whole family - and how they eventually rebuilt their lives. This interview contains themes of child sexual abuse which may be difficult and triggering to hear. Details of organisations offering information and support for victims of child sexual abuse are available at bbc.co.uk/actionline Any comments please email us on outlook@bbc.com Presenter: Jo Fidgen Producer: Sophie Eastaugh Picture: Jan Broberg as a child with her abuser Bob Berchtold Credit: Courtesy Jan Broberg

Episode 4 is all about how the film Abducted in Plain Sight came together. After all the research, interviews, casting, and shooting. When it came time to take all the material they had and make a movie out of it, how did they do it? How did they decide what the core story was and how to tell it? Over the course of putting this podcast together, one of the names that kept coming up as someone who was key to the storytelling of the film was the editor, James Cude. So we decided that Skye and James should sit down and have a conversation about what should stay, what should be cut, and how the storytelling helped propel this small, independent project into a worldwide phenomenon. This week we get even more Angela as she and Bob discuss a documentary about a story they can’t un-hear. This doc has been burning hot since it dropped on Netflix a few weeks ago and the water cooler is fogging up over everyone gabbin’ about it. It’s a story that has to be heard to be believed. A Mormon family gets marked in Skye Borgman’s creepy 2017 film “Abducted in Plain Sight”. It’s a story that tells itself, but sometimes hitting a softball is a lot harder than it looks. Regardless, many things here will not be forgotten no matter how hard we try. If it wasn't for Jeremy Piven’s stunning performance as the pedophile, Bob Berchtold, in this film’s re-enactments, then it almost might be a documentary worth forgetting. Talk about an Oscar snub! Probably one of Jeremy Piven’s finest performances. He’s not listed in the film’s IMDB, but that’s just how modest Mr. Piven is. One of our finest actors, truly. One of the most creepy documentaries we’ve watched so far. Watch this, then pressure wash your eyeballs. Listen to us talk about it, then pressure wash your ear-holes. Then start drinking. Then quit drinking. Then relapse a few times. Drink a few more years even more heavily. Experience a health scare. Drink one last time. Quit drinking permanently. Re-align your compulsions towards documentaries and the best documentary themed podcast in the universe. Congratulations to Jeremy Piven. Keep on Doccin’® www.documenteerspodcast.com
