Content Warning: grooming, domestic violence, physical violence, sexual violence, sexual abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and sex trafficking.Marina Lacerda is a survivor and mother from Brazil. In her youth, she immigrated to New York with her mother in hopes of forging a new life. Almost immediately, Marina would begin to face sexual and physical violence that normalized a long cycle of abuse. By the time she was 14, Marina would be introduced to Jeffrey Epstein, a man that seemed to symbolize success and wealth, but only added to her trauma. Eventually, Marina would play a part in both of the FBI's attempts at justice in 2008 and 2019, when during the latter, she would be dubbed, “Minor Victim 1.” Marina's journey is a testament to the impact of the cycle of abuse, but it also is a testament to her personal resilience and strength. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly honored she was willing to share her story with our audience, and continues to be transparent about her healing journey in the name of advocacy.Marina's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/marinalacerdaforsurvivors/For a list of additional resources and related non-profit organizations, please visit http://www.somethingwaswrong.com/resourcesThank you again to Mint Mobile for sponsoring this episode. Editor: Re: “Something old, something new — Wilson County News takes some new turns,” Jan. 14 I can completely understand your decision to eliminate the political columns. Your explanation was perfect. I agree, it makes more room for local news and leaves the politically heated discussions for another venue. I thoroughly enjoyed Nannette Kilbey-Smith's column; a fresh approach to giving our bodies and appearances the same prayerful thought as we give to decorating the church at Christmas! You amaze me. Content Warning: rape, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Marlee Liss is a survivor,award-winning speaker, victim advocate, somatic educator, and author from Toronto, Canada. She grew up in the arts, but pivoted to social work when she began her college career. It was in Marlee's junior year when her life changed forever; she became the victim of a sexual assault and entered an arduous journey in the criminal justice system as a result. However, three years into that battle for justice, Marlee found an additional path: restorative justice. According to Walden University, quote “Punitive justice is the idea of punishing criminals for their crimes against society or the legal system itself, and is the traditional method of handling crime in the United States. Restorative justice seeks to bring victims of crimes into the justice process. Criminals are asked to take accountability for their wrongdoing by facing those they have wronged... The theory is that criminals owe more than a debt to society—they owe a debt to specific people,” end quote. The two processes are not always mutually exclusive. It's important to note that criminal justice can occur tandemly with restorative justice practices. The Broken Cycle Media team is so very grateful for Marlee's powerful perspective advocacy and time and energy in sharing in this episode. Jean-Gaël "JG" Collomb says community-based conservation organizations know best how to tackle the complex conservation challenges unique to their ecosystems. However, they're also among the most underserved in terms of funding of all stripes. On this week's episode of Mongabay's podcast, Collomb explains how his nonprofit, Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN), is working to change that. When it comes to funding conservation," it's really difficult to know who to give your money to besides a handful of organizations that a lot of people are familiar with," Collomb says. WCN facilitates partnerships between community-based conservation groups, primarily in Global South nations with funders, in what has previously been described as “‘venture capital for conservation,” or as Collomb says, “people invest in people.” They are “the first actors,” he says. “We're huge fans of being able to encourage people to give unrestricted [funding] … those organizations who are based on the ground in the field know best how to use that money.” Subscribe to or follow the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify, and you can also listen to all episodes here on the Mongabay website. Angelique Robledo is an incredible mother and survivor living in Arizona. She was born in Southern California, but after a pivotal move nearly four hundred miles east in her middle school years, she found herself having trouble fitting in. Several years later, and not long after finding out she was pregnant, Angelique was introduced (by a mutual friend) to a Maricopa newcomer who she seemed to have a lot in common with. Over the next several months she would get to know the also-18-year-old via text and social media; they would discuss their pregnancies and build what Angelique considered a friendship. But everything changed on February 16, 2011, when their burgeoning relationship became nearly lethal.
