FBI Director Christopher Wray recently announced he will resign from his position in January 2025. Two highlights of my post-FBI retirement career producing and hosting FBI Retired Case File Review are speaking one on one with Director Wray for the celebration of the 300th episode of FBI Retired Case File Review and having the honor of sitting next to him at the 2021 FBIAA G-Man Honors awards dinner. I'm reposting my interview with Director Wray to recognize his years of service to our government, seven as the director of the FBI. After the interview, I share my thoughts about the future of the FBI, and retired agent Jerome Lorrain reads his FBI director qualifications wish list. I'm a massive fan of books and movies about the FBI. If my wife sees me reading, she can often assume it's some story about counterintelligence or criminal profiling. One night, I was enjoying a podcast called FBI Retired Case File Review, and it dawned on me that as someone with my own podcast, I could just ask the host to be a guest. To my delight, she agreed. Jerri Williams retired after serving 26 years as a special agent in the FBI. In addition to her podcast, she does work as a technical consultant for major TV networks and production companies. She's also the author of several books, both fiction and non-fiction. Through her story-telling and interviews with retired FBI agents, she debunks myths and misconceptions with a mission to show the public who the FBI is and what the FBI does. Her podcast has more than 300 episodes and 10 million downloads, so I think it's safe to say: mission accomplished. Jerri said that talking to me gave her an excuse to reflect on what retirement means, and it felt like therapy. Take her words to heart; perhaps it will for you, too. Jerri Williams has always been a storyteller and, after serving 26 years as a special agent in the FBI, she has plenty of stories to tell. She notes that with a gun, they can steal hundreds. But with a lie, they can steal millions. I read on a public forum thread that a candidate heard from his applicant coordinator that it would require no use within one year (similar to the new marijuana policy). Is this correct? 00:06:00 - Is it still the policy of the FBI that a new agent will not return to their applicant field office as their first assignment? For example, if you apply through the Tampa office, is there any chance you could be assigned Tampa (or a resident agency) as your first location? 00:07:11 - Is anyone permitted to be in your government issued vehicle (i.e. spouse or children)? 00:08:00 - Is it still true that the application process takes about one year, or has that increased or decreased? 00:08:27 - How do we find out who the applicant coordinator is for our local office? And what types of questions are appropriate for the AC prior to an application even being submitted? 00:11:13 - Does the FBI still, on occasion, assign new Special Agents to work applicant matters? Or has this function been turned over to the FBI's Background Investigations Contract Services (BICS) Unit? 00:12:58 - Which FBI Division and/or Office at headquarters is responsible for the tracking and analysis of women and minority Special Agent diversity statistics? And how have these numbers changed over the past 3-5 years? 00:17:02 - Are Special Agent job applications now all handled electronically on-line? Or are some still accepted by snail mail and/or hard copy drop-offs at the 56 field offices throughout the United States? 00:18:24 - What changes have been made to the FBI's formal recruitment process over the years in order to attract more women and minorities into the Special Agent ranks? Are there still more hurdles or are you encountering roadblocks? 00:23:13 - What kind of continuing training exists for agents, for tactical-related things learned at the academy? Not just firearms shooting at a static range, but also tactics/shoothouse, car stops, etc. 00:24:19 - What is the process for changing what squad and violations you're working on after entering? 00:27:53 - What is the work/life balance like these days? I've listened to quite a few episodes where the different agents worked 80-100 ish hours a week for months over the course of their careers, which often negatively impacted their family relationships, with some ending in divorces, etc. 00:31:00 - I am 27 years old; I work as the Director of Assessment at a psychiatric hospital. My master's degree is in Psychology. I have been with the hospital for almost 6 years, working in progressively higher positions until obtaining a director-level job. My goal has been to join the FBI at 30. Given the brief overview of my background, is there any general advice you all can give me as I look to apply within the next 2-3 years? Anything that would make me stand out even more as an applicant? 00:32:57 - My grand daughter is 28 and has BA and MA degree in Accounting and four years with a major accounting firm. She has researched FBIJOBS.gov and realizes she meets the basic educational and experience for the SA position but is more interested in the Accounting /Financial Analyst position. Are professional Accounting/Financial Analysts able to choose their office assignments? Are they subject to transfers as are the SA's? Do they receive location pay for high-cost areas? Do they receive overtime (AUO) as do the SA's? 00:37:00 - I am a licensed attorney and I own and run my own law firm. My husband is a Navy JAG officer and so I take my firm with me when we move from state to state. I am a solo practitioner, so I do not have a supervising attorney. Is this still considered "professional" job experience for purposes of the Special Agent position? 00:37:50 - In moving from field office to office, is there any consideration given to being able to live close to my husband who is in the Navy, if possible? Of course, I understand the needs of the Bureau come first. 00:38:47 - I got arrested for driving under the influence. Besides this, I have a clean, spotless record. Would this prevent me from getting accepted? Would that one mistake in my past be enough to prevent me from my dream job? 00:39:56 - What fields of study and experience is the Bureau most looking for and what will give future applicants that edge? 00:42:14 - Is the Intelligence Analyst recruitment process on hold or does it only happen one time per year? 00:44:00 - Do you have to have 20/20 vision to be an agent? Is there a height restriction? 00:45:00 - How long does the hiring process typically take? 00:45:10 - During Quantico, are you able to communicate with/see loved ones? 00:49:37 - How does the FBI determine what your specialization (or unit) will be as an agent? 00:53:00 - I haven't been able to get in touch with my local FBI recruiter or Applicant Coordinator. What should I do? 00:55:02 - In your experience observing and training candidates, what do the most resilient New Agent Trainees do regularly while at Quantico to help them face unknown challenges and experiences while training? 00:57:20 - I've been told or even warned that this job can change you; being exposed to a world of crime and prosecution might do that. What strategies have you used, or seen used, whether mental attitudes or practices, to maintain a healthy optimism when facing even the toughest situations consistently as a special agent? And to follow that question, what practices do you suggest to check-in with yourself throughout one's time serving in the FBI to make sure you haven't lost true north, in a sense? 01:05:44 - I am a military officer considering transitioning in the next 3-5 years and I'm interested in applying to the FBI. Can you speak at all on family life in the FBI? My dream is to coach my kids' little league teams. Is that possible as a special agent? Also, does the FBI respect Sundays for church? 01:10:41 - Are Tattoos allowed? 01:12:05 - What is the graduation rate over the past 5 years? How many people flunk out? 01:14:03 - How do new agent graduates from the Academy handle first assignment living arrangements, especially given when that first assignment location is confirmed while in training and the 2 year probationary period? Are there any services provided at the academy to help locate housing/apartments for new agents or at the field offices themselves? Do most agents look to rent an apartment or do they purchase a house that they have a family? 01:19:44 - When given a new assignment (new city) later in an agent's career, do the individuals have to handle breaking a lease/selling a house or does the government help alleviate some of that stress? 01:22:14 - How does that first week/month look for new agents when they arrive at their first field office?
In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Retired agent Dan DeSimone reviews "Operation Thin Crust," a long-term undercover operation (UCO) conducted in 1998. He played the undercover role of the manager of an escort service, covertly set up by the FBI to gather evidence of attempts by associates of the New York Gambino crime family to enter the lucrative Las Vegas escort industry, also known as the outcall industry. Dan and the case agent had to act quickly when, while monitoring electronically intercepted conversations, they learned that three mob enforcers were planning to kidnap, torture and maybe even kill competitors. Dan DeSimone served in the FBI for 23 years. Jerri Williams served 26 years as a Special Agent with the FBI. During most of her Bureau career, she worked major economic fraud investigations. She notes that with a gun, they can steal hundreds. But with a lie, they can steal millions. During her FBI career, Jerri specialized in cases targeting major economic crime and corruption. Her investigation of a $350 million Ponzi scheme perpetrated against unsuspecting nonprofit organizations, high profiled philanthropists and beneficiary donors resulted in a 12-year prison sentence and multiple forfeitures; the international advance fee scam case she conducted resulted in a 14 year prison sentence and the forfeiture of the subject's residence; and her major investigation of business-to-business telemarketing fraud, which included a long-term undercover operation, resulted in 16 search warrants, 25 convictions, and many multi-year prison terms. Jerri received numerous awards throughout her career, including four United States Attorney Awards for Distinguished Service, three of them for her work on the cases noted. Being interviewed and appearing on CNBC's American Greed in the episode—When Greed and Giving Collide—was a highlight of Jerri's career. Toward the end of her federal law enforcement career, Jerri was appointed as the spokesperson for the Philadelphia Division of the FBI, taking on the responsibility of educating and informing the media and public about the Bureau. Jerri is currently using her federal law enforcement experience and communication and media experience to host and produce a popular true crime and history podcast—FBI Retired Case File Review—where she interviews retired FBI agents about their high-profile cases and careers, while correcting clichés and misconceptions about the FBI in books, TV, and movies. With nearly 6 million downloads and over 250 episodes, the podcast can be accessed on Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, Spotify and other popular podcast apps. In her book, FBI Myths and Misconceptions: A Manual for Armchair Detectives, she presents her top 20 clichés about the FBI. The entertaining companion book, FBI Word Search Puzzles: Fun for Armchair Detectives, is also available. Based on the success of her FBI non-fiction, Jerri is under contract as a technical consultant for major TV networks and production companies wanting to create authentic FBI dramas and characters. Her crime novels—Pay to Play and Greedy Givers—feature flawed female FBI agent Kari Wheeler, a married mother of three investigating fraud and corruption in Philadelphia while struggling to balance her family responsibilities. The third story in the FBI Philadelphia Corruption Squad trilogy, Spoiled Sport, is coming soon. The books are available wherever books are sold, as ebooks, print books, and audiobooks. Jerri has posted case reviews about her own FBI investigations on FBI Retired Case File Review. You can learn more about her career and her author and podcasting journey by listening to the podcast. On November 18, 2021, in Washington, DC, the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) recognized Jerri as their G-Man Honors – Distinguished Service Honoree for her continued support of the FBI Family through her podcast and books. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, SSA Richard Marx reviews the FBI Recovery Team he lead at the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, where a multi-agency team carefully sifted through tons of World Trade Center debris to recover criminal evidence and the remains and belongings of the victims of September 11. The work at Fresh Kills, miles from Ground Zero and closed to the general public, is an important part of the 9/11 story most people don't know about. From September 12, 2001 to August 9, 2002, Richard was in charge of the site, along with New York Police Department Inspector James Luongo and New York Bureau of Waste Disposal Deputy Director Dennis Diggins. During the 11-month operation, the forensic recovery effort sifted the 1.8 million tons of World Trade Center debris and recovered over 4,500 human remains and over 75,000 personal effects and processed over 1,300 vehicles. SSA Richard Marx is currently assigned to the Evidence Response Team Unit at the FBI Laboratory, Quantico, VA. He has been involved in support efforts following many of the mass casualty events and disasters both domestic and abroad that have occurred during his nearly 25 years in the FBI. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, I'm sharing everything I'm learning about the TV industry. I want to thank Jim Clemente (timestamp 3:33), Jim Fitzgerald (timestamp 34:37), Bobby Chacon (timestamp 1:04:38), and Scott Garriola (timestamp 1:33:27), all previous guests on FBI Retired Case File Review, for letting me pick their brains about producing, writing and developing stories, and consulting, and for generously sharing their advice with us. It's every author's dream to have their story made into a TV show or movie, and streaming services are looking for creative content to develop. Books have traditionally been an excellent source of materials and now, podcasts are too. I may know about publishing books and producing a podcast, but this TV stuff is a brand new entertainment medium for me. It's wonderful to know I can call on former colleagues for guidance. Jerri Williams has always been a storyteller and, after serving 26 years as a special agent in the FBI, she has plenty of stories to tell. During most of her Bureau career she worked major economic fraud investigations and is amazed at the schemes and deceptions con-artist and corrupt corporate and public officials devise to steal other people's money. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray get a chance to sit down with Caroline Daley and Michael Caputo of Pod Clubhouse. Alan and Walt were featured on their show, Interview with a Podcast, which dropped in January of 2021. On that show, Caroline and Michael like to bring a spotlight on other podcasts. Alan and Walt had such a fun time being interviewed, they wanted to return the favor here in season 4 of The Wilder Ride. Caroline Daley and Michael Caputo of Pod Clubhouse each started in media separately, but found each other via a radio program. It did not take long for the two of them to realize they fed easily off each other and it led to the creation of a new podcast. The concept behind Pod Clubhouse was to bring other podcasts and voices together in the spirit of collaboration. As Michael says, they believe in the concept that a rising tide lifts all boats. As they embarked, their brand has become an umbrella for several different shows. While they still think of Interview with a Podcast as their primary show, they have added shows related to dozens of television and streaming shows, a movie themed show where they are looking at 52 weeks of Christmas movies, a show called, Decorating the Set and one called PCH Press Pass. There are several other members of the Pod Clubhouse team, all of which can be found on their website under the About Us page. As we wind down the interview portion of the show, Caroline and Michael encourage folks to proactively reach out to them if you would like to join forces on an episode. There is no guarantee, but life is easier for them if people feel comfortable reaching out to them. As the episode continues, Walt dives into his horrible movie review, which was selected by members in our Facebook Listeners Group. Alan and Walt then get into a few news items and then all of them wrap up the show with the entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt finished season 1 of Tin Star on Amazon Prime, giving it an enthusiastic review. He just started to watch Bosch season 7 and highly recommends the Eddie Murphy movie, Mr. Church, streaming on Netflix. Alan also finished season 1 of Tin Star and loved it. With his father-in-law still visiting, he went back to watch some older flicks. They included Iron Man, Kindergarten Cop, Galaxy Quest and Silverado. Alan also encourages the YouTube channel, Ashleigh Burton, who reacted this week to the films of Fried Green Tomatoes and the 1962 Cape Fear. Radio Labyrinth had a YouTube show out discussing Loki. Popcoun in Bed reacted to The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug, The Battle of the Five Armies and Schindler's List. Finally, on The Daily Doug, previous guest Doug Halvering reacted to Queensryche's, "Suite Sister Mary," which included a shoutout to our own podcast! Caroline watches, Sex LIfe and Penguin Town, both on Netflix. Michael recommends, Kevin Can F Himself, on AMC, Central Park on Apple TV and Domina on Epix. READING Walt and Alan both continue to work through the Star Trek unauthorized history, "The Fifty-Year Mission: The First 25 Years." Alan also read, "How to Love Your Child More Than You Hate Your Ex," by Dr. Larry Waldman for another show called, The Marriage Fit Podcast. Caroline is currently reading, "Last Summer at the Golden Hotel," by Elyssa Friedland. Michael is working his way through all three volumes of the comic book, Invincible. LISTENING Walt is listening to the podcasts, The Great Trials, Camp Hell: Anneewakee, FBI Retired Case File Review with Jeri Williams and Never Not Funny with Jimmy Pardo. He has also been listening to the album, Hummingbird, by last week's guests, the New Age group 2002. Alan has also been listening to, Hummingbird. The podcasts he has been listening to this week include Measuring the Score, 60MW Podcast, Radio Labyrinth, The Nostalgic Podblast and The Indiana Jones Minute. Caroline has been listening to the Beach Boys Christmas album. She recommends the podcast, The Deep Dive with Jessica and June. Michael is addicted to podcasts, with over 50 subscribed in his Spotify account! He listens to all of the Pod Clubhouse shows, of course. He also suggests, The Neighborhood Listen, Comedy Bang Bang and Gates McFadden Investigates - Who Do You Think You Are?
