Boyle hits crust in Pittsfield and a dodgy Irishman slips in a story.
Palo Alto is nice. The weather is temperate, the people are educated, rich, healthy, enterprising. Remnants of a hippie counterculture have synthesized with high technology and big finance to produce the spiritually and materially ambitious heart of Silicon Valley, whose products are changing how we do everything from driving around to eating food. It is also a haunted toxic waste dump built on stolen Indian burial grounds, and an integral part of the capitalist world system. In Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World (Little, Brown, 2023), the first comprehensive, global history of Silicon Valley, Malcolm Harris examines how and why Northern California evolved in the particular, consequential way it did, tracing the ideologies, technologies, and policies that have been engineered there over the course of 150 years of Anglo settler colonialism, from IQ tests to the "tragedy of the commons," racial genetics, and "broken windows" theory. The Internet and computers, too. It's a story about how a small American suburb became a powerful engine for economic growth and war, and how it came to lead the world into a surprisingly disastrous 21st century. Palo Alto is an urgent and visionary history of the way we live now, one that ends with a clear-eyed, radical proposition for how we might begin to change course. Malcolm Harris is a freelance writer and the author of Kids These Days: The Making of Millennials and Shit is Fucked Up and Bullshit: History Since the End of History. Boyle is a slave to the music and we get some big titties and broken noses.
A degenny puts his balls on the line, you be the judge.
As we prepare for what's coming in the new year, we're releasing a Best of 2025 series—by no means objective, and making plenty of tough decisions to leave a few favorites out. Each of these will also be posted in the public feed. We'll be back early in the new year with new episodes. This episode was originally released April 21st 2025 for Death Panel patrons and is being unlocked today for the first time. Boyle gives the phoenix a chance to rise.
No, you're not crazy, dramatic, or bad at coping. We've been so poorly served the year of the snake, the 9 year cycle and a whole load of messed up 'ending' vibes. There are some very real energetic, psychological, and astrological reasons why 2025 felt like one long emotional hangover. Let's dive in, shall we? With love, Nixalina. Today I have the pleasure of talking with Dean Spade about his new book, Love in a Fucked-up World: how to build relationships, hook up, and raise hell together. This book builds on all of Dean's previous books, and shares their commitment to finding ways to build better movements for better worlds. Like all of his work, Love in a Fucked Up World homes in on the obstacles we face not only from repressive states and destructive ideologies, but also from our own very human weaknesses and blindspots. This new book focuses on what Spade calls the “romance myth,” which shares so many features with, among other things, capitalism—ideas like a property, scarcity, ownership, status, power. While showing how when romance is brought into activist spaces it can cause great harm, Dean Spade also shows that, if converted into a form which includes patience, kindness, and generosity, romance can complement and strengthen our activism at a time when it is needed the most.Dean Spade has been working in movements for queer and trans liberation, anti-militarism, and police and prison abolition for the past 25 years. He's the author of Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics, and the Limits of Law, and Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next) the director of the documentary “Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back!.” His new book is Love in a Fucked Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up and Raise Hell Together, and he is the host of a new podcast with the same name.
Boyle is getting the podcast back on the international standard time. And a listener gets completely dogged which saves his life.

Le Boyale has got a pad and we are bank in the tank for FUF.
Boyle watches his mates show at Harvard and we get some snorkel action.
I first saw Home Front supporting High Vis at Islington Assembly Hall, one of the rare shows that felt like a real moment suspended in time. I fell in love with their new wave / oi! inspired weirdo punk rock, and their new album Watch It Die (out 14 November) sounds like it's gonna be ace. Boyle quits his job and Sandy lets loose.
Boyle is one week down and we get a partial story from a waster.
Boyle does not have a deviated septum and Gill the sales man has another down week.
The boys chug cheap beer in Babalouie's, get drunk on sleazy psychobilly surf riffs, and use the scientific method to conduct an autopsy on the corpse of The Cramps' raunchy rockabilly riot, “Let's Get Fucked Up.” News items and digressions include Sammy Hagar's paranormal tequila visions and David Lee Roth's ghost-shaming stand-up routine.
Boyle almost fights a truck driver and a story from a fluffy panted raver.
“One day, I woke up with this concept of oil being tied up in our lives in ways that we don't talk about. It's sort of a value-theoretical approach to climate change and the climate crisis. Something that's impersonal and goes to the root of our entire social metabolic structure.”In this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liuwelcomes Malcolm Harris back to the show. Previously, he talked with us about his mammoth study, Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World. This time, we are looking not at a history of Capitalism and the World, but our possible futures under the threat of catastrophic climate change. We talk about not only failed policies, but failed perspectives on society, politics, and culture, and focus on a deadly form of Value that has led us to the abyss precisely because it has emanated from a basic rift between humans and the world. It is a rift that Capital has always both fed and exploited, but will end up exhausting a finite resource—the Planet. We talk about what is needed to heal this, what we are up against, and his latest book, What's Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis.Malcolm Harris is the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Kids These Days: The Making of Millennials; and Shit is Fucked Up and Bullshit: History Since the End of History. Boyle is fucked and we get a funny finnish one.
In this episode, we dive into Gregg Araki's Totally Fucked Up (1993), the raw, DIY cornerstone of his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy. Blurring the lines between documentary-style confessional and narrative chaos, the film follows a group of queer teens navigating love, alienation, and survival in early '90s Los Angeles. We unpack its fragmented structure, its unfiltered portrayal of youth on the margins, and the way Araki captures both the aimlessness and urgency of adolescence. From grainy camcorder intimacy to punk-fueled rebellion, we explore how Totally Fucked Up remains a defiant, vulnerable time capsule of Gen X disillusionmentIntro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. John welcomes second-term Democratic congressman and former mayor of Long Beach, CA, Robert Garcia to talk about the imperative for his party to move away from “respectability politics” to combat the Trump 2.0 agenda. Garcia explains why the Texas redistricting fight transcends the particulars of the Lone Star State as a central part of Donald Trump's plan not just to steal the 2026 midterm elections but to stay in office past 2028—and the Jefrey Epstein scandal, far from subsiding during the congressional recess, is only gathering steam. Garcia also waxes poetic about his love for Superman, what the character means to many gay Americans such as himself, and why, for all of David Corenswet's swagger in the role on the big screen this summer, Christopher Reeve remains (now and forever) the gold standard Man of Steel.
