What happens after the experiences of true crime survivors have been shared with the world? Does the media truly capture all it entails to survive such tragedy in the public eye? What comes after the convictions are in, the cameras stop rolling, and the court of public opinion has spoken? Can sharing our stories lead to justice, and is there ever really justice? These questions and many more are discussed on the new true crime docuseries podcast brought to you by Broken Cycle Media (https://www.brokencyclemedia.com/) . What Came Next (http://www.instagram.com/whatcamenext_podcast) is co-created and produced by Something Was Wrong (http://www.somethingwaswrong.com) ’s Tiffany Reese and host, award-winning writer, victim advocate and true crime survivor Amy B. Chesler (http://www.amybchesler.com) . On What Came Next (http://www.instagram.com/whatcamenext_podcast) , you’ll hear firsthand accounts from those impacted, with behind the scenes insights about what came next for survivors after their stories were shared with the world, and how the media impacts crime victims and their loved ones.
The What Came Next podcast is a compelling and important addition to the true crime genre. Hosted by Amy, it focuses on the stories of survivors and their lives after experiencing trauma. This podcast stands out from others in the genre by giving a voice to the victims and shedding light on their journeys towards healing and recovery.
One of the best aspects of The What Came Next podcast is its empathetic storytelling. Amy approaches each survivor's story with great care and compassion, allowing them to share their experiences in their own words. Her interviewing skills are exceptional, creating a safe space for survivors to open up about their trauma and its aftermath. The episodes are structured beautifully, providing insight into the emotional and psychological impact that these events have had on the survivors' lives.
Another strong aspect of this podcast is its ability to inspire hope and help for those who may be experiencing abuse or trauma themselves. By sharing stories of resilience and strength, The What Came Next podcast serves as a source of empowerment for survivors. It highlights the bravery and courage it takes to speak out about these difficult experiences, offering support and understanding to listeners who may be going through similar situations.
While The What Came Next podcast has many positive qualities, one potential flaw is the rambling nature of some episodes. Although Amy generally does an excellent job with structure, there are moments where tangents or excessive detail can detract from the main focus of the episode. This can make it challenging for listeners to stay engaged with certain segments.
In conclusion, The What Came Next podcast is a well-produced and impactful exploration of survivors' stories after traumatic events. Through its empathetic storytelling and compassionate hosting, it provides a platform for survivors to share their experiences while inspiring hope in others who may be going through similar situations. Despite some minor flaws in pacing or structure at times, this podcast remains an essential listen for those interested in understanding the long-term effects of trauma and how individuals can heal from it.

Content warning: sexual abuse and child sexual abuse. It has been a great honor to host Mike Sacks and Kelly Gee on What Came Next prior to this conversation. Kelly first shared his experiences of abuse in episodes 51 and 52, entitled “Against Big Odds” and “What Happens Next,” which aired in January of 2024. Episodes 109 and 110, entitled “Silence is an Incubator” and “Up to Us to Protect,” were released over a year later and highlight Mike's abuse experiences with the same hockey coach nearly a decade prior to Kelly's abuse. The two men, united by sharing their experiences in the media and a similar mission to change the world, created a non-profit organization called Survivors for Change. In this special episode of What Came Next, both men join us again to share about their process of developing a revolutionary program for survivors and their support systems in the wake of their healing. The Broken Cycle Media team extends our immense gratitude to the Survivors for Change team; it's survivors and organizations like them that will enable the vicious cycle to end. Kim is a mother and nurse from Indiana. She reached out to the Broken Cycle Media team in hopes of sharing her story for the first time to bring awareness to a trajectory she never thought she would have had to traverse. Nearly a decade into her marriage, her whole life changed with a home raid by the FBI and several other criminal justice forces. The organizations would consequently find a large catalogue of child sexual abuse material in her then-husband's possession. However, at the start, Kim was not aware of all facets of his crimes. It would eventually take her years to learn everything, as well as to receive what closure the legal system offered. Joan Hoyt is a business professional and family woman from Santa Cruz, California. Although she has proudly served her county as a juror before, a 2024 jury duty assignment opened her eyes to the harsh realities of a criminal justice process she would have never thought was real prior. Her assignment included listening to the heartbreaking facts of Madyson Middleton's gruesome 2015 murder, then deeming whether Madyson's murderer should be released from juvenile incarceration in February of 2025, only ten years later. And when the jurors learned this process will occur every two years in perpetuity because of laws placed in effect after Madyson's murder, Joan and her fellow jurors began using all they witnessed as fuel towards making legal change. The Broken Cycle Media team is so deeply grateful Joan was willing to share her unique perspective with us today, and that she continues to fight for justice for Madyson and so many others.
