Brenda E. Cortez is a living kidney donor to another mom, which is what inspired her to write her first children's book. She is the creator of Howl the Owl© (plush owl and book series) and his special message of Help Others With Love. Brenda's experiences have sparked her passion to make a difference in the world through her books, including her latest non-fiction book, "Voices-19", and now the stories she helps others bring to life. Today's guests, Brenda Cortez and Gina Sirico, give a voice to those we lost to Covid-19. Their legacies will live on forever by their stories that are told. In this beautiful book, 19 grieving families celebrate their loved ones' lives by sharing their stories. Voices-19:Their Legacies Live On was written to celebrate the lives of those lost to COVID-19. Those lost to this virus are not just a number or a statistic. They are our mothers and fathers, our sisters and brothers, our aunts and uncles, our grandparents, cousins, friends and even our children. It's time to humanize the numbers that you see on the news daily. Covid is real. Ask anyone of these families left behind to grieve. These beautiful souls made a difference to the world and impacted many lives, perhaps even your life. Everyone in the world has been affected by the pandemic but for almost 1 million families in the USA alone, their lives will never be the same, and no one will ever be back to “normal”. Together we can be the empathy and compassion for those families left behind experiencing PTSD and Prolonged Grief Disorder. So many were unable to say goodbye or to be with their loved ones as they took their last breath, due to Covid restrictions, while others had no funeral services or were able to witness their loved one's burial. This grief is like no other. It is my hope that this episode educates, inspires and changes your perspective to understand those that were lost to Covid-19, were not just a number, they were human beings, who have made a difference, touched our lives and are still loved and missed today. Please say their names with me! Please join us today to hear stories of bravery, hope and inspiration. To learn more about these families or to contact one or all of them, please contact Brenda E. (She was inspired to write her first book, “My Mom is Having Surgery” after her daughter centered her college entrance essay around Brenda's organ donation- and the inspiration, she felt from it.) Brenda is now a strong advocate for living donation awareness. Because of this advocacy, and her passion for helping others, Brenda came up with the slogan, HOWL: Help Others with Love. Brenda's series of children's books are both astounding and inspirational. Brenda's newest book, which is not a children's book, titled “Because of Organ Donation” brings together the biographical stories of twenty-five inspiring members of our global health community – including donor-families, recipients of donated organs, and living donors. Brenda's Children's books - https://www.donatelife.net/books/Brenda's latest book - https://www.becauseoforgandonation.com/

Today’s guest, Terri Pilawa was on top of the world. She had a great job, an amazing son, met her husband and was in the best shape of her life. Everything was going well until she felt like she was suffocating and couldn’t breath. Terri was in denial and couldn’t believe this was happening to her. After suffering from a misdiagnosis of adult asthma for 5 years and many trips to the emergency room, Terri was diagnosed with NSIP Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2012. After days, months, years of not knowing if and when she would survive, she believed that “Giving up is too easy” and fought the good fight for her life. KEEP FAITH ~ KEEP FIGHTING Terri shares her starting over again and again journey as she fought for her life to the end. Hear the incredible details of how she felt like she was drowning or suffocating daily, and hung on until the end, begging for lungs. ONE LIFE FOR ANOTHER Just when she thought her life was coming to an end, having her DNR (Do not Resuscitate) in order, and having trouble breathing when responding to the nurse, “I need my lungs!” "I NEED MY LUNGS!" Shortly thereafter that night, on June 24, 2015, at 10:00 p.m. her doctor called and said she had lungs for her, not a perfect situation, but had lungs for Terri. The celebration of yelling and cheers were put on hold as she was too weak and getting too excited would use too much of her limited supply of oxygen. By midnight her donor was off the use of a ventilator support and by 3:00 a.m. the journey of a 13 hr surgery, Terri was getting lungs. What became a tragic end of a life for one family, was a gift of life for another. Terri was fortunate enough to meet her donor’s family and hear how her Donor, Maria Quinteros, a 22 year old woman, said, “YES” to being a donor, saved Terri’s life and now lives inside her, celebrating the gift of life every single day. Terri is truly blessed and grateful for her second chance of life. Chatting With Sherri welcomes author Brenda E. Cortez!   Brenda E. Cortez donated her kidney to another mom 14 years ago and has since had a passion for raising awareness for organ donation. This passion has also led to her writing children’s books on the topic to help children understand better and relate. Brenda believes in being kind and helping others so she created her book character around that topic. Howl the Owl™ is character in Brenda’s books and his name stands for Help Others With Love! Visit howltheowl.com for more information about Brenda, her books and her mission. Howl the Owl is a plush animal as well, and has been traveling the world with families who have been hosting him. He also has his regular Facebook page to highlight all things Howl, as well as Instagram and Twitter.  He is a mascot now too! The mascot has been traveling with me to different organ donation events this year in Vegas, Iowa and Ohio.
