Dreaming of writing a book but have no idea where to start? You're not alone. In this eye-opening conversation with book coach Allison Lane, we dive deep into the realities of publishing that most aspiring authors never learn until it's too late.Allison, whose impressive career spans from dressing as a burrito for PR stunts to leading communications for brands like Pepsi, Unilever, and Burt's Bees, shatters common misconceptions about the publishing journey. Her most surprising revelation? "Don't write your whole book! Nobody wants to read your manuscript." What publishers actually want is a business plan for your book, proving you understand its market potential and your role in making it successful. With trademark candor and humor, Allison explains how the publishing world really works. Traditional publishers require agents and pay advances (which she advises keeping modest), hybrid publishers offer more partnership opportunities, and self-publishing gives complete control at the cost of handling everything yourself. But regardless of path, one truth remains: you must be ready to market yourself and your book. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Allison discusses personal branding. Contrary to popular belief, your book doesn't create your personal brand, your established expertise should come first. "You cannot emerge from a hole in the ground with a book," she warns. Instead, she advises building visibility in your field through speaking, media contributions, and online presence before approaching publishers.Whether you're a corporate professional looking to expand your influence, an entrepreneur wanting to showcase your expertise, or simply someone with valuable knowledge to share, this episode provides the insider perspective needed to approach publishing strategically and successfully. Allison's practical advice on everything from book proposals to AI tools for content creation will save you years of frustration and dramatically increase your chances of publishing success.Enjoy the show.  Please leave us a review.ResourcesLaneLit.com Allison's LinkedIn Profile Learn more about AnitaB.org Support the showWhen you subscribe to the podcast, you are supporting our work's mission, allowing us to continue highlighting successful women in a variety of careers to inspire others helping pay our wonderful editor, Chris, and helping me in paying our hosting expenses.

Are you looking to elevate your authority, grow your business, and foster deep, profitable relationships through your podcast? In this episode of Podcast Talent Coach, I dive deep into the undeniable power of becoming a published author, and how your podcast is the perfect springboard to make it happen. BENEFITS OF BEING PUBLISHED A book isn't just a collection of words; it's the foundation of authority, visibility, and influence in your niche. Whether you've been podcasting for a year or have hundreds of episodes under your belt, you already have a treasure trove of content that can be repurposed into a high-impact book. I'll walk you through why having your name on a cover instantly elevates your credibility, opens new doors for speaking gigs, and sets you apart in your field. Let's face it... everyone wants to stand out, but not everyone knows how to do it strategically. In my conversation with book coach and editor Susan Crossman, we break down how you can curate your podcast episodes into a well-structured book. PUBLISHED WITH SUSAN CROSSMAN Susan Crossman is a book coach and editor who helps mission-focused coaches, consultants, and innovators write and publish compelling books that make a difference in their businesses and their world. She believes a well-written book can be a powerful force for good in our world and she takes delight in assisting her clients to greater author-ity. Susan's journey is as inspiring as her expertise. From her childhood dream of writing while perched in an apple tree to overcoming loss and transforming her own story into five published books, she shares actionable insights every aspiring author needs. We also tackle the big question: should you self-publish or pursue a traditional publisher? Susan cuts through the confusion, helping you decide what aligns best with your business goals and personal aspirations. Don't fall into the trap of thinking "if you write it, they will come." As we explore in this episode, writing a book is only 20% of the journey. The real impact comes when you masterfully market and leverage your book as part of your broader content strategy. Susan and I share real-world examples, from business leaders like Tony Robbins to rising entrepreneurs who found their true calling and built movements after publishing their first book. And yes, we get honest about the pitfalls of poor quality, AI-generated books and why investing in professional editing, structure, and heartfelt writing delivers results your audience will respect. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES The benefits of being a published author extend far beyond the book itself. We delve into the speaking opportunities, media exposure, and industry recognition that come with being a published author. Susan recounts how one of her clients, an accountant-turned-author, became a sought-after speaker and leader in her field - all by articulating her value and experience in a quality book. We also talk candidly about best-seller myths, the importance of audiobook versions, and how to avoid the embarrassment of a rushed, unpolished book. If you want your message to stick and your book to stand the test of time, this episode gives you a clear blueprint. GET PUBLISHED Ready to get started? Susan is hosting a powerful three-day event, "Write With Impact," specifically for coaches, consultants, and change-makers who want to create books that make a difference. When to use frameworks to solve your story problems—and when to trust yourself and lean on your own story authority. You've heard of Save the Cat! Story Grid. Blueprint for a Book. These are all frameworks designed to help you edit a novel. If you don't know these names, I bet you know others—Hero's Journey, Freytag's Pyramid, 7 Point Story Structure, Dan Harmon's Story Circle, there are dozens more. Each one promises that if you use it, you'll be able to craft better stories. And because we want to write good books, the writers I know are constantly learning new frameworks and analyzing their stories through them.I use frameworks like these in the editing process, after the first draft is already written. But I've seen many writers use them earlier, even before they begin writing. It's a tempting thought, right? What if you could use these frameworks to solve your story problems and make writing your first draft so much easier? What if you could build a story from the ground up that already fulfills everything those frameworks require from the very first draft?Would that shortcut the creative process? Would it help you create a better story faster?Or would it get in the way of your storytelling? Are there moments in the creative process when frameworks like these might just do more harm than good?I'm a big fan of storytelling frameworks. But today, we're taking a hard look at them to see what they offer, what they can't do for us, and how to tap into your true authority as the writer of your own story.Links mentioned in the episode:Find B is for Book Coach on Substack »Further listening:Ep. 79: Ask This Question When You're Overwhelmed by Your StoryB is for Book Coach: How to Take the Drama Out of Cutting and Rewriting ContentB is for Book Coach: Comparison Isn't a ThiefSend me a Text Message!Support the showRate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts "I love Alice and Your Next Draft." My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lorraine Norwood, author of the book The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine is a former journalist and archaeologist who lives in Western North Carolina. Her short stories and essays have been published in Minerva Rising, New Southerner, Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 3, and Talking Writing, and have won awards in the Atlanta Writers Club contests. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society, Womens' Fiction Writers Association, and Author Accelerator. Her debut novel, The Solitary Sparrow, will be published in the spring of 2024. She is at work on the sequel, A Pelican in the Wilderness. The novels are part of a series set in 14th century England and France. Lorraine is also a certified Book Coach and developmental editor. She writes with an always-hungry yellow Lab, Sally, by her side and an aloof cat, Macavity, who sometimes deigns to be touched.   In my book review, I stated The Solitary Sparrow is an amazing historical fiction set in 14th century England and France. I loved the premise - a child, Meg, considered evil due to a birth deformity eventually finds her passion in medicine. But how will she move forward given her facial disfigurement, her family's station in life, and the fact that she is a woman?   Early in the book, Meg determines that she will become the first licensed female physician in English and hopes to provide care to women. She is tutored by a village healer, then a surgeon and his son, and even a school of medicine, though she must remain hidden from view because no females are allowed to attend. Despite it all, she thrives - gaining knowledge, wisdom, and even love.   If you love a story about persistence and courage, then you will love The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine's research is top-notch and her characters come to life on the page. Send us a textIn this week's episode, Stephanie chats with Book Coach and Editor, Sue Toth. You'll get insight into what it looks like to work with a book coach and an editor. For Sue Toth, who holds both titles in her business, there's a distinct difference between the two and they're important to consider as you think about your needs as a writer.Did you know there are different approaches an editor can take when working with your manuscript? If not, you'll get a quick overview this week.If you're tempted to use one of the many tools available to writers online, like Grammarly or ProWritingAid, to edit your work, you'll want to listen to what Sue has to say about the importance of connecting with another human being about your writing. Sue is not just an editor. (This episode was originally released in July 2023.)---------"When people get serious about writing a book and fulfilling this desire to have a book, that voice is really loud. Voice that says, no one wants to hear from you. This is not a good idea. It's already been done before. It's not interesting."---------Key Takeaways* What many writers need is “mindset guidance” and “expectations guidance,” says Joelle Hann.* Developmental editing vs. book coaching: It's not just about refining the manuscript but nurturing the author's confidence and creative process.* Traditional publishing has shifted, especially since the pandemic. Joelle highlights the pressures on big publishers and how it affects new authors trying to break in.* One thing that surprises Joelle—and flummoxes new authors—is that while they bring enthusiasm to the process, they also face a big crash when confronted with their inner demons.* “When you get serious about the thing you want to do, your inner resistance comes and says, hold on a second,” she says. One way around this? Introducing mindfulness and somatic techniques to help authors move past blocks.* As a book coach, Joelle emphasizes the transformative process of writing, which often reveals bigger personal revelations beyond just the book. For those who face down their inner critics, they often discover unexpected resilience—a key to successful authorship.---------"Editors can love a book and think it's phenomenal, still not be able to sign it because they don't have what they call a ‘vision' for the book, which usually means they can't quite see directly how it'll turn into big sales…Now, that said, people are still getting book deals. My clients are still getting book deals. But it can take more work.”---------About Joelle Hann & the Book Proposal AcademyJoelle Hann is a book coach & writer helping authors write their books and proposals, discover their ideas, and harness their creative process. Many people dream of becoming writers one day. The possibility of making money selling books filled with their creative writing, stories, or solutions is exciting. However, many don't know what it takes to get their books traditionally or self-published or how much money they can make as writers.  In this episode, long-time MILMO Show listener Randy Surles gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to write, edit, and publish a book that will have commercial success, whether traditionally or self-published. SGM Randall Surles (Ret.) served for nearly 32 years in the Army as an infantryman in the 75th Ranger Regiment, where he parachuted into Panama during Operation Just Cause. He then served over 20 years as a Green Beret in various positions, specializing in medicine, weapons, tactics, and intelligence.  While still serving on active duty, Randy completed his BA in U.S. History from Campbell University and his MFA in Creative Writing from The University of Texas at El Paso. After retiring, Randall Surles trained under editor Shawn Coyne to become one of a handful of Story Grid Certified Editors. He currently works as a Podcaster, Developmental Editor, Book Coach, Ghost Writer, and Author.
