Just when we thought we knew a little bit about heart transplantation, enter Dr. David Joyce, a cardiothoracic surgeon and the Director of the Heart and Lung Transplant Program at The Medical College of Wisconsin. In my conversation with Dr. Joyce, he clearly explains several extraordinary advancements in heart transplantation that are about to become a reality in the United States. The first is the use of the DCD (Donation after Cardiac Death) heart transplant, which will increase the number of possible donors by as much as 70 or 80%,, And he also discusses the use of drone transport of donor organs in our current system of organ transplantation, which will reduce the risks and technical challenges associated with the transport of organs using manned-aircraft which is currently the order of the day. Finally, I discuss the use of artificial intelligence for the purpose of donor and recipient selection in the transplant process, which will eliminate the subjective nature of the selection process which creates emotional distress for the selection committees. This is a fascinating discussion with a truly extraordinary heart and lung transplant doctor in our global community. Don't miss this episode!!
