Avec Jens Lekman, « Wedding in Finistère ».

In the latest of our episodes focussed on Brexit in the real lives of British citizens living in the EU27, Michaela is joined over the Internet by Debbie Williams, founder of BrExpats Hear our Voice (https://brexpatshov.com). She explains how she went from never having been involved in politics beyond voting to founding this group that has had an increasing presence in campaigns for citizens’ rights. They discuss her concerns about the ways in which the human cost of Brexit has been overlooked in the negotiations, the difficulties of getting the voices of those who rights are being transformed heard, and the importance of standing up for these rights at this point in time. And on a personal level, she highlights how Brexit has changed her, the way she looks at the world and caused her to question things that she might previously have taken for granted.

Ahead of the election, we wanted to find out about groups of British expats across the continent who have come together since the referendum in 2016 to protect the rights and futures of British citizens living in Europe and the sort of work they do, so we got in touch with three to learn some more. First, we hear from Michael Harris, a British writer and educator who lives near Madrid. After the referendum, Michael set up Eurocitizens, a Spain based group who meet with government officials in Madrid to lobby for the ring-fencing of British citizens’ rights post Brexit. He’s also on the steering group of British in Europe, a coalition of a number of groups looking out for British citizens’ rights across the continent. Debbie Williams also works closely with British in Europe, through her own group, Brexpats – Hear Our Voice. Their members are found in countries across the EU, and they similarly work with EU wide organizations to find answers to the main questions people have about what is going to happen to UK citizens post-Brexit. Brexpats have also collaborated with a project in the UK called In Limbo. That’s run by Elena Remigi, an Italian living in the UK who decided to set up the project to humanize the Brexit process by sharing testimonies of EU nationals in the UK, and later UK nationals in the EU. The Norway option, gammon wars and the plight of expats with DR MICHAELA BENSON of Goldsmiths University of London. In the week when confusion continues to reign about the EEA option, Labour’s Brexit policy and what to do about customs, we talk to sociologist Dr Michaela Benson about how the endless uncertainty is affecting British citizens who live in the EU27.Who are the BrExpats, apart from pensioners in Spain and DJs in Berlin? How nervous are they about the future? What, if anything, are governments doing to put their minds at rest? And why on earth are some of them still proud enthusiasts for Brexit?Plus! Will centrist pin-up David Miliband’s transatlantic intervention move the dial? Has the penny finally dropped for Daniel Hannan? Do any remainers still think that Jeremy Corbyn is on their side? Is the Electoral Commission’s punishment of Leave.EU more than a slap on the wrist? Is calling red-faced Brexiters “gammon” racist? (No) And are we surprised by the UN rapporteur on racism’s findings that Britain has become a more hostile environment since the referendum? (Also no)"Some UK citizens living overseas will probably lose their right to vote in both local and European elections - the idea of not being able to vote for anything anywhere is quite upsetting."This week’s REMAINIACS is presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ros Taylor and Peter Collins. One of the key issues in the Brexit negotiations – and one of the three highly contested matters to be put on the table this far – has been citizens rights. But all too often, both the media and politicians talk predominantly about EU citizens living in the UK while completely sidelining the fate of Brits living abroad. For today’s podcast we brought on Karen O’Reilly, a Sociologist and research dellow at Goldsmiths University to shed some light on the forgotten side of this coin. She is part of the Brexpats project which examines the issues of freedom of movement, citizenship and Brexit in the lives of Britons resident in the European Union. We already talked to Karen’s colleague Michaela for episode 89 back in July about the initial response of Brits in France. We thought it was time to check in with the project and talk to Karen in the wake of her field trip to Spain about how expats are feeling about the state of the negotiations this far, how they have progressed and what, to them, would be the ideal outcome.
