Andrew Harrison, the co-founder and group editor of Podmasters, was one of the early pioneers of British current affairs podcasting. He and his team launched Remainiacs (since rebranded as Oh God, What Now?) in 2017 using Harrison's PPI compensation payout. Today Podmasters produces several other shows, including The Bunker, Hello Girls and Mugshots with Michael Crick. In this week's Future of Media Explained, Harrison speaks to Press Gazette's William Turvill about the growth of Podmasters and the future of the British podcasting sector. (PwC last year forecast that the UK's podcast ad market would be worth £64m by 2025. Harrison says that figure appears "really low".) Harrison also makes the case for why the BBC's podcast platform, Sounds, should be opened up to boost the independent sector.Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. On this episode, we were joined by Ian Dunt, political journalist and broadcaster, Twitter personality, and author of the new bestseller, "How Westminster Works... and Why It Doesn't."Breaking down Westminster institution-by-institution, Dunt's impressively detailed book is a marvel of non-fiction storytelling, filled with humour, righteous indignation, and an overwhelming desire to wrestle British politics back from the brink. Ian spoke to us about how exactly we got into this mess; the 'chicken or egg' effect of Brexit; the corrosive effects of 'machismo'; and why the political class loathes non-partisanship and expertise. What emerges from our conversation is his refreshingly funny and optimistic approach to a subject of deep moral seriousness, and the occasional audio appearance of his tiny dachsund.

While the coronavirus crisis in the United Kingdom has abated somewhat in recent months, is life in the country going to get tougher if winter brings about a growing risk of transmission and Brexit negotiations falter? With us this week to discuss the challenges facing Britain are Remainiacs and The Bunker host Ros Taylor, pod regular Elizabeth Ames, and Brexit researcher Georgina Wright. It has been a very tough year in the UK, but some fear that very difficult times still lie ahead. With schools reopening and winter set to force Britons back indoors, will the colder months bring with them another spike in COVID-19 cases? While the country has seen an outpouring of support for frontline workers, is the pandemic actually undermining the social contract in the UK? And with Brexit negotiations forced down the priority list, what impact is the uncertainty about the future of UK-European relations having on British business already struggling? On this Democracy Sausage Extra we’re joined by a top panel of UK-based experts - Ros Taylor, Elizabeth Ames and Georgina Wright - to look at the challenges facing Britain as it tries to manage Brexit negotiations and a global pandemic.Georgina Wright is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government, where she focuses on the United Kingdom's engagement and influence in the European Union after Brexit. Prosecutions are falling apart. And civil liberties groups are calling for a review of all penalties. Constitutional expert and Remainiacs regular DAVID ALLEN GREEN talks to Ayesha Hazarika about bad law made in haste, and what we can look forward to in the inevitable Public Inquiry.“We've enforced public health legislation as if it were public order emergency.”“The regulations that created perhaps the widest-ranging prohibitions in peacetime never had a parliamentary vote.” “It may well be that the litigation will go on longer than the virus did.”“We're supposed to nod along in a public health emergency… but how much are we nodding along?”Presented by Ayesha Hazarika. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer Jacob Archbold. Music by Kenny Dickinson. Audio production by Alex Rees. THE BUNKER is a Podmasters Production. “It’s all right, it’s OK/The press will look the other way/And we will fail to understand/Can’t Britain find a better man?” This week: Boris Johnson’s deceitful advice on unlocking. Why appealing to magical “common sense” is his ultimate get-out clause. And as Spain reopens its own society we talk to Fiona Govan of TheLocal.es about what the crisis has done to Spain’s politics. “No-one really knows what common sense means. It’s just a dogwhistle.” – Ros Taylor“The closer you look at these rules, the more they look like they were written by clowns. And then they talk about common sense?” – Ian Dunt“For Scotland and Wales to effectively say ‘you are not welcome here’… that’s a big thing.” – Ros Taylor “This isn’t to do with liberals vs authoritarians. Why VE Day belongs to us, not the petty nationalists. Is the fish a credible war animal? And who decided that if you’re pro-Brexit you’ve got to be pro-virus too? Dorian Lynskey, Naomi Smith and Ian Dunt police one another’s tones. “People are saying this is not the time to criticise the government. It’s TRIPLY the time to criticise the government.” – Ian Dunt“VE Day wasn’t about victory OVER Europe. This week in Euro-Plague news: How is Sweden’s risky approach to the COVID crisis really working? James Savage of news network The Local joins us from Stockholm to give us the view on the ground. Plus: That weird feeling when the person demanding a proper merciless lockdown is… evil Dominic Cummings? Alan Sugar’s totalitarian boomer tweets. And why we shouldn’t trust people who say we don’t trust journalists. Also… towns! “The Brexiters are realising that the economic hit of COVID will be so enormous that Brexit will seem small beer. And they are hoping to take advantage of that.” – Ros Taylor “They’ve created the idea that they’re fighting a sentient enemy… because the alternative is to admit that our government was outwitted by goo.” – Alex AndreouPresented by Dorian Lynskey with Ros Taylor and Alex Andreou. “They want power, but they don’t know why.” How this government’s obsession with rebutting bad COVID news is masking a total absence of ideas. As No.10’s story on our failure to join the EU joint purchase of medical equipment falls apart, Naomi gives a true crime fan’s guide to the timeline. Fire and brimstone among the Brexiters as a few heretics float the idea of extending transition. And is exiting under No Deal in midwinter – prime COVID Wave 2 time! – really a good idea, Minister?“The government prioritised its own image over the country’s health, and that decision has been disastrous.” – Naomi Smith“These are cosplay politicians. Alex and Dorian read the entire leaked Labour antisemitism report so you don’t have to (they wish THEY didn’t have to). Will the EU Corona bailout actually work for European countries – and is Britain really going to stampede towards No Deal, now of all times? “The same people who told us Brexit was more important than the economy are now telling us there’s NOTHING more important than the economy.” – Alex AndreouPresented by Dorian Lynskey with Ian Dunt and Alex Andreou. Is Brussels’ hamfisted approach to resurrecting the European economy really a danger the EU’s own existence? Will Boris Johnson’s hospitalisation expose the flaws in his Corona policy? Where in the world is Priti Patel? And we’re joined by Fleur Anderson MP, the only Labour gain in the 2019 General Election, to look at Keir Starmer’s options to regenerate Labour – and the party’s future position on Europe. (This edition recorded before the EU stimulus deal was struck on Thur 9 April). “The EU was always going to be really terrible at Part One of this crisis. But Part Two, the reconstruction, is where the EU can come into its own.” – Alex Andreou“We are about to see something properly seismic in the world economy… If we see material deterioration in poorer economies that will be very, very bleak indeed.” – Ian Dunt Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ian Dunt and Alex Andreou. Will the seismic trauma of COVID-19 provide the moment of clarity we need to change the way we live? Authoritarian governments seize on Corona to enact the repressive moves they’ve always craved. Chemicals and ventilators: is the Government’s slipperiness with facts undermining its Corona message? Transition denialism drags us towards the abyss. And our special guest, former Labour MP for Bury James Frith, give his totally disinterested take on the arrival of the Starminator. “There IS a money tree – and it isn’t magic. It is sensible to spend money when you need to.” – Ian Dunt“There will be an upside to this crisis if it makes us confront the changes we need to make in society and in work… It could force a welcome change.” – James Frith“You hear people saying don’t question the police, it’s an emergency, don’t complain… That is precisely the opposite to the approach we should be taking.” – Ian DuntPresented by Dorian Lynskey with Ian Dunt and Ros Taylor.
