The IfG team headed to Birmingham to explore how mayors can secure and deliver private investment into their regions in pursuit of growth and regeneration. The IfG DevoLab is a new initiative from the Institute for Government dedicated to exploring the innovations enabled by devolution, learning from the results, and sharing the lessons so that places can take better decisions about how to use devolved powers and budgets. IfG DevoLab #2 saw speakers from three regions – West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and the North East – set out how the powers and profile of mayors and the convening role of strategic authorities have been used to secure and deliver private investment for key regional strategic projects. ‘Investing in the West Midlands: The Birmingham Sports Quarter', Jonathan Gibson, Interim Director of Strategy at the West Midlands Combined Authority ‘Investing in Greater Manchester: The Sister Innovation District, Robert Edwards, Deputy Director of Investment at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority ‘Investing in the North East', Dr Henry Kippin, Chief Executive of the North East Combined Authority The three presenters were joined on the panel by Julia Goldsworthy, Head of Social Impact Investment at L&G, and former Director of Strategy at West Midlands Combined Authority, for a broader discussion on the benefits of devolution and mayoral leadership, the lessons less mature devolved regions can learn from those further along in the journey, and whether further devolution can accelerate growth. This event was chaired by Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, with an introduction by Hannah White, CEO of the Institute for Government. Insights from this discussion informed a published policy briefing containing the three case studies and a synthesis of key lessons. The Institute for Government would like to thank L&G for its support of this event and its wider support of the IfG DevoLab series. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 191:For today's guest episode it is a welcome return to Ricky Dukes, artistic director of Lazarus Theatre Company. Following on from our conversation about ‘Henry V' Ricky and I went on to discuss ‘Julius Caesar'. Not surprisingly our conversation pulled out some alternative points to those I raised in my episode on the play, especially when it came to talking about aspects of staging the play and the impact of the female roles in the play, which I did not mention in any detail previously. So, please see these two episodes as complimenting each other, but as long as you are familiar with the play you don't need to have listened to my episode first, or, for that matter, our earlier discussion of ‘Heny V', to enjoy this one. Ricky Dukes is an award-winning Director, Practitioner and Teacher based in the West Midlands and London. In 2007 he founded Lazarus Theatre Company and is the company's current Artistic Director for which he won Best Artistic Director in the 2012 Fringe Report Awards. His work is ensemble led with actor detail at its heart creating large scale visual, visceral, and vibrant theatrical experiences. Ricky has gone on to direct over 40 productions for Lazarus Theatre Company including: The Changeling, Hamlet, Doctor Faustus, Oscar Wilde's Salomé, Macbeth, Marlowe's Edward II, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Tis Pity She's A Whore, and Dido, Queen of Carthage. Ricky also runs workshops for actors under the ‘Lazarus Gym' banner, and I have put links in the show notes to his activities so you can follow that up further if you wish.Check out Lazarus Theatre here: https://www.lazarustheatrecompany.co.ukSupport the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. The Government's bill to ‘get Britain building' returns to the House of Lords for its report stage. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill gained more than sixty Government amendments earlier this month to streamline the process and give ministers more power to grant permission for big planning projects. However conservation campaigners are not happy about the developments, and the Government's rhetoric. All this week we're taking a look at the beer and cider industry, and the UK growers who make it possible. There are around 45 hop growers across the country, around half of them in the West Midlands. We speak to a farmer in Herefordshire as he harvests his crop and ask the Campaign for Real Ale about the market for home-grown hops.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
It's Monday. Ava, Ed, and Seán are talking Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Israeli football club set to play Aston Villa on November 6th, and Prince Andrew's relinquishment of his titles ahead of the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir. Keir Starmer recently criticised West Midlands police for their decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv from watching the game in Birmingham, inciting a discourse frenzy. Hosted on Acast. In the mid-1990s, a young family — a husband, wife, and their two daughters — left the city bustle of Birmingham behind, seeking peace and a fresh start in an old 18th-century cottage nestled in the countryside. But tranquillity soon gave way to unease. Strange sounds echoed through empty rooms, shadows moved of their own accord, and the family began to suspect they were not alone within those ancient walls. What began as a dream move to the country would soon turn into a chilling ordeal that drove them to the brink. In today's episode we turn our attention to architecture and its role in shaping not just our buildings and infrastructure, but the society, environment and communities that are created by our built environment. To tackle this challenging brief, I am joined this week in a quiet corner of the Building Centre in London by Chris Williamson, internationally renowned architect, founder of Weston Williamson + Partners – the practice that he set up in 1985 - and the freshly installed new President of the Royal Institute of British Architects – RIBA.Chris is a man with a bold vision to reshape the profession and reshape RIBA, an organisation which has been a cornerstone for architecture for nearly two centuries. But today, the institution faces serious questions about its relevance, its purpose, and how it can adapt to meet the needs of a fast-changing world. And as issues like climate resilience, community engagement, and professional diversity take centre stage, there is growing pressure for RIBA to evolve — to become more accessible, more influential, and more impactful. But to honest, it's a challenge that Chris has been immersed in for his whole career, having worked on a huge portfolio of infrastructure projects, including notably the Jubilee Line extension station at London Bridge, Elizabeth Line stations at Paddington and Woolwich, the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project plus many urban regeneration projects, such as the Arden Cross masterplan in the West Midlands. All of this work has emphasised Chris's focus on the design of spaces that are not only functional but are sustainable and, crucially, enjoyable for people. In his presidential nomination bid, Chris promised big change – in his first 100 days he vowed to review the 2021 RIBA Masterplan to create a more purposeful institution that leads on sustainability, champions diverse routes into the profession, delivers lifelong learning, and rebuilds public trust in architecture as a force for societal progress. So what does that future look like? What will it take to deliver meaningful reform? And how can architects once again be seen — not just as designers of buildings — but as stewards of a better, fairer, more sustainable world?ResourcesWeston Williamson + Partners websiteRoyal Institute of British Architects – RIBA websiteChris Williams elected RIBA PresidentChris Williamson's presidential bidThe Stirling PrizeChris on “Your Architect” by Derek SeniorRIBA amendments to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill

Members of minority religious groups say they feel less safe in the UK than ever before.A summer of protests outside asylum seeker hotels and a renewed debate about immigration have led to concerns British society is becoming increasingly fragmented. And last week, figures released by the Home Office showed that religious hate crime recorded by police in England and Wales had reached a record high. Some members of the Sikh community in the West Midlands have been escorting elderly people to their local gurdwara due to concerns about physical and verbal abuse. What are the causes behind this rise in hate crime? How are minority groups responding, and what can be done to rebuild fragile communities?Niall is joined by Rabbi Josh Levy, the co-lead of Progressive Judaism, and Sky's communities correspondent Lisa Holland.Producer: Tom GillespieEditor: Mike Bovill

Episode 187:This episode is both an ending and a beginning. An ending because it is the last of the recent run of consecutive guest episodes – next time we will be returning to Shakespeare, Jonson and their plays – but it is also the first of what I hope will be a series of guest episodes attached to each of the very significant Shakespeare plays that are coming up soon. With the very well-known and arguably greatest of Shakespeare's plays the task of providing some meaningful commentary is, I have found, very daunting, so I thought it would be a good idea to have another view on these plays to bring another perspective to them besides my own. I am also keen for those views to be born from the practical experience of producing the plays and understanding them from an actor's perspective and therefore as a result of close exploration of the text. Send us a textCharles Rapson takes us on a fascinating journey through his accidental discovery of social enterprise and his current mission as Social Economy Growth Lead at West Midlands Combined Authority. With refreshing candour, he shares how he's leveraging his position to champion a sector that employs over 100,000 people and engages 200,000+ volunteers across the West Midlands. The conversation reveals how Charles has successfully shifted perceptions of the social economy within regional government, securing £2.5 million in funding and ensuring social enterprises feature prominently in strategic planning. His innovative place-based approach is rebuilding vital infrastructure by supporting nine organisations to become community hubs where relationships, trust, and partnerships can flourish. We dive deep into the challenges of social value procurement, with Charles articulating a compelling vision for moving beyond tick-box exercises to measuring real impact. His practical strategies - breaking down large contracts into manageable lots, making social value contractual and measurable, recognising intrinsic value alongside additional value - offer a blueprint for procurement that genuinely supports inclusive growth.Looking ahead, Charles outlines his comprehensive ecosystem approach to growing the social economy, encompassing everything from business support and access to finance to education initiatives modelled on Scotland's successful Social Enterprise Academy. His determination to map and understand the region's 9,314 social economy organisations demonstrates a data-driven approach to strategic investment.Whether you're a social entrepreneur seeking opportunities, a public sector professional interested in procurement innovation, or simply curious about how regional economies can become more inclusive, this conversation offers valuable insights into transforming systems from within. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Send us a textWhen Josh Wheeler founded Be Broadcast PR 3 years ago, he was determined to create something different—a PR agency focused not just on securing media coverage, but on telling meaningful stories that unite rather than divide. His journey from a tiny village in the West Midlands to becoming a broadcast PR specialist offers fascinating insights into what truly matters in communication.(Josh joined Chris Grimes in the Show to 'experience the format from within' to explore the possibility of lending his PR expertise to Chris's special new series-strand to the Show, 'Legacy Life Reflections': To record their or your Life Story, for posterity. "Lest we forget...Before its too late")During this intimate conversation, Josh reveals how some of his most formative experiences came not from formal education or corporate training, but from early jobs like making tea in a care home at age 11 and working the tills at Tesco. These roles taught him that despite our apparent differences, people from all walks of life share fundamental similarities—a philosophy that now informs Be Broadcast's approach to storytelling.Josh speaks candidly about his struggles with burnout, discovering that "being busy doesn't necessarily mean being fulfilled," and the challenge of finding balance in a high-pressure industry. His advice to slow down and "be more swan-like"—appearing calm while paddling furiously beneath the surface—offers valuable wisdom for anyone navigating today's frenetic workplace culture. What makes this episode particularly compelling is Josh's perspective on human connection in an age increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. While acknowledging AI's transformative potential, he reminds us that technology should complement rather than replace authentic human interaction: "We need to remember our place in all of that."Whether you're a PR professional or simply someone interested in how we communicate and connect in an increasingly fragmented world, Josh's insights about building businesses with integrity, finding inspiration in "scrappy, imperfect people," and creating work environments that prioritize people over profit will resonate deeply. His call to action—to speak to neighbors, smile at strangers, and engage with people outside our usual circles—offers a simple but powerful antidote to our increasingly isolated digital lives.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. The mist seemed to be swirling across the surface of the water at a measured deliberate pace; the woman watched in complete disbelief as it began to form into the shape of a human-like figure with wings. As the figure continued to take shape and rise above the water, she wasn't sure if it was an angel, demon, good, nefarious; but she knew it wasn't of this earth and it had some intent towards her – the woman panicked and fled the park as quickly as she could. This is episode 39 of the Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going to learn about the ghosts and hauntings which go on at a house which was never, or perhaps … could be lived in: Woodchester Mansion.Do you love ghost stories, tales of haunted houses and poltergeist encounters? Our Village Hall was built in the 1800s… and honestly, the office furniture seemed like it came with the building. It was due for retirement—chairs that creaked louder than a town hall debate, desks straight out of a history book… and filing cabinets? I practically needed a crowbar to open them. Then I found out Valley Road Office Furniture is a NYS Contract vendor which guarantees the lowest possible price on office furnishings.
