Melanie Lenehan is the Principal and CEO of Fircroft College, a unique publically supported adult education institution located in the West Midlands in Birmingham, England's second largest city. The college was founded in 1909 by George Cadbury, Jr., a Quaker industrialist and philanthropist, who was one of the pioneers of the art and science of milk chocolate. Cadbury's educational vision was strongly influenced by the Danish folk high school model which emphasizes cultivating the development of a strong sense of personhood and belonging through non-competitive adult education in the context of small residential learning communities with multiple opportunities for formal and informal interactions, ranging from classes, to shared meals and group singing. The students of Fircroft College are most often adults older than traditional college age who have experienced significant setbacks or disruptions in their lives, including addiction, mental health issues, or disadvantages arising from poverty or legal status. In our conversation, Mel and I spoke about her experiences as a child of Irish immigrants growing up in London who was the first person in her family to attend university, as well as the origins of Fircroft College and its connections to the Danish folk high school movement. Finally, Mel introduced one of her most important sources of inspiration, namely, the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and the approach for working the poor and dispossessed that he articulated as "the Pedagogy of the Oppressed."Links: Fircroft College - https://www.fircroft.ac.uk/Thoreau College - https://thoreaucollege.org/

On a winter's night in December 1996, after a couple pulled into a lay-by in the West Midlands, the woman claimed they'd just been victims of a violent road rage attack. The man, her fiancée, lay dying from multiple stab wounds. What followed would become one of the most infamous murder cases in modern British criminal history - a case that split public opinion, dominated tabloid headlines, and introduced a narrative many were too quick to accept. For years, this case has been lazily labelled a so-called “femme fatale” murder - a phrase that risks turning a brutal killing into something stylised, even seductive. But strip away the media caricatures, the courtroom theatrics, and the mythology built around it, and what remains is the death of a young father, Lee Harvey, and a family left to grieve while the country argued over the person responsible.Buy Maureen Harvey's book Pure Evil below (not an affiliate link):Pure Evil | Amazon UKExclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Wolfie dissects yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Aston Villa! ⚽Football Prizes⚽ Win Free Forest Shirt!: https://footballprizes.co.uk/club-competitions/nottingham-forest/ The wait for a win at Villa Park continues as Nottingham Forest fall to a 3-1 defeat, extending our winless run in the West Midlands to over three decades. It was a game defined by moments of madness and missed opportunities; despite a stubborn first-half defensive display, a wonder strike from Ollie Watkins on the stroke of halftime completely deflated the Reds. While Morgan Gibbs-White gave us a glimmer of hope with a cool finish to make it 2-1, a "clown show" moment from John Victor—who rushed off his line only to get rounded by John McGinn—ended the contest and left our keeper heading off with an injury. But as the dust settles on another defeat, we have to look at the bigger picture. Are we witnessing a squad that has simply lost its identity under the constant cycle of managerial changes and heavy summer spending? Wolfie asks the tough questions about where the blame truly lies: is this on Evangelos Marinakis for his "main character" approach to ownership and the sacking of Nuno? Is Edu struggling to find the right balance in recruitment, or are the players simply not showing the "fight" required for a Premier League survival scrap? We've seen flashes of quality, but sitting in 17th with the relegation zone looming, the "project" is starting to look like a nightmare. How are you feeling after that one, Forest fans? Is it time to stop blaming the managers and start looking at the hierarchy, or do you still trust Sean Dyche to "stabilize the ship" before it's too late? With a massive six-pointer against West Ham coming up next, we cannot afford many more of these defensive collapses. Get involved in the comments below—who is your scapegoat for today, and do you genuinely believe we have enough to stay up? #nffc #premierleague #astonvilla Learn more about your ad choices. The IfG team headed to Birmingham to explore how mayors can secure and deliver private investment into their regions in pursuit of growth and regeneration. The IfG DevoLab is a new initiative from the Institute for Government dedicated to exploring the innovations enabled by devolution, learning from the results, and sharing the lessons so that places can take better decisions about how to use devolved powers and budgets. IfG DevoLab #2 saw speakers from three regions – West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and the North East – set out how the powers and profile of mayors and the convening role of strategic authorities have been used to secure and deliver private investment for key regional strategic projects. ‘Investing in the West Midlands: The Birmingham Sports Quarter', Jonathan Gibson, Interim Director of Strategy at the West Midlands Combined Authority ‘Investing in Greater Manchester: The Sister Innovation District, Robert Edwards, Deputy Director of Investment at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority ‘Investing in the North East', Dr Henry Kippin, Chief Executive of the North East Combined Authority The three presenters were joined on the panel by Julia Goldsworthy, Head of Social Impact Investment at L&G, and former Director of Strategy at West Midlands Combined Authority, for a broader discussion on the benefits of devolution and mayoral leadership, the lessons less mature devolved regions can learn from those further along in the journey, and whether further devolution can accelerate growth. This event was chaired by Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, with an introduction by Hannah White, CEO of the Institute for Government. Insights from this discussion informed a published policy briefing containing the three case studies and a synthesis of key lessons. The Institute for Government would like to thank L&G for its support of this event and its wider support of the IfG DevoLab series. Learn more about your ad choices. Credit to the Nation - led by West Midlands native MC Fusion - was a clear-cut child of Public Enemy but compared to another PE child in Hijack, CTTN was probably more blunt in leftist messaging (akin to Sistah Souljah) along with Brummie & Patios accents to add texture to the unique nature of Fusion and his crew.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (0:53)Ben:Tame Impala - DeadbeatCharlie:Chronixx - ExileCharlotte Dos Santos - Neve AzulCurren$y - 10/15Adrian Younge & Carlos Dafé - Carlos Dafé JID025 7xvethegenius - Self 7xve 3Monaleo - Who Did The BodyTame Impala - Deadbeat Topic Intro/Ben's Research House - (15:17) Take Dis - (20:52)Daddy Always Wanted Me to Grow a Pair of Wings - (31:13) Mad Dogs and Englishmen - (38:11) Lighter Note - (50:23) Thanks for listening. Episode 191:For today's guest episode it is a welcome return to Ricky Dukes, artistic director of Lazarus Theatre Company. Following on from our conversation about ‘Henry V' Ricky and I went on to discuss ‘Julius Caesar'. Not surprisingly our conversation pulled out some alternative points to those I raised in my episode on the play, especially when it came to talking about aspects of staging the play and the impact of the female roles in the play, which I did not mention in any detail previously. So, please see these two episodes as complimenting each other, but as long as you are familiar with the play you don't need to have listened to my episode first, or, for that matter, our earlier discussion of ‘Heny V', to enjoy this one. Ricky Dukes is an award-winning Director, Practitioner and Teacher based in the West Midlands and London. In 2007 he founded Lazarus Theatre Company and is the company's current Artistic Director for which he won Best Artistic Director in the 2012 Fringe Report Awards. His work is ensemble led with actor detail at its heart creating large scale visual, visceral, and vibrant theatrical experiences. Ricky has gone on to direct over 40 productions for Lazarus Theatre Company including: The Changeling, Hamlet, Doctor Faustus, Oscar Wilde's Salomé, Macbeth, Marlowe's Edward II, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Tis Pity She's A Whore, and Dido, Queen of Carthage. Ricky also runs workshops for actors under the ‘Lazarus Gym' banner, and I have put links in the show notes to his activities so you can follow that up further if you wish.Check out Lazarus Theatre here: https://www.lazarustheatrecompany.co.ukSupport the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. The Government's bill to ‘get Britain building' returns to the House of Lords for its report stage. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill gained more than sixty Government amendments earlier this month to streamline the process and give ministers more power to grant permission for big planning projects. However conservation campaigners are not happy about the developments, and the Government's rhetoric. All this week we're taking a look at the beer and cider industry, and the UK growers who make it possible. There are around 45 hop growers across the country, around half of them in the West Midlands. We speak to a farmer in Herefordshire as he harvests his crop and ask the Campaign for Real Ale about the market for home-grown hops.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
It's Monday. Ava, Ed, and Seán are talking Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Israeli football club set to play Aston Villa on November 6th, and Prince Andrew's relinquishment of his titles ahead of the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir. Keir Starmer recently criticised West Midlands police for their decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv from watching the game in Birmingham, inciting a discourse frenzy. Hosted on Acast. In the mid-1990s, a young family — a husband, wife, and their two daughters — left the city bustle of Birmingham behind, seeking peace and a fresh start in an old 18th-century cottage nestled in the countryside. But tranquillity soon gave way to unease. Strange sounds echoed through empty rooms, shadows moved of their own accord, and the family began to suspect they were not alone within those ancient walls. What began as a dream move to the country would soon turn into a chilling ordeal that drove them to the brink. In today's episode we turn our attention to architecture and its role in shaping not just our buildings and infrastructure, but the society, environment and communities that are created by our built environment. To tackle this challenging brief, I am joined this week in a quiet corner of the Building Centre in London by Chris Williamson, internationally renowned architect, founder of Weston Williamson + Partners – the practice that he set up in 1985 - and the freshly installed new President of the Royal Institute of British Architects – RIBA.Chris is a man with a bold vision to reshape the profession and reshape RIBA, an organisation which has been a cornerstone for architecture for nearly two centuries. But today, the institution faces serious questions about its relevance, its purpose, and how it can adapt to meet the needs of a fast-changing world. And as issues like climate resilience, community engagement, and professional diversity take centre stage, there is growing pressure for RIBA to evolve — to become more accessible, more influential, and more impactful. But to honest, it's a challenge that Chris has been immersed in for his whole career, having worked on a huge portfolio of infrastructure projects, including notably the Jubilee Line extension station at London Bridge, Elizabeth Line stations at Paddington and Woolwich, the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project plus many urban regeneration projects, such as the Arden Cross masterplan in the West Midlands. All of this work has emphasised Chris's focus on the design of spaces that are not only functional but are sustainable and, crucially, enjoyable for people. In his presidential nomination bid, Chris promised big change – in his first 100 days he vowed to review the 2021 RIBA Masterplan to create a more purposeful institution that leads on sustainability, champions diverse routes into the profession, delivers lifelong learning, and rebuilds public trust in architecture as a force for societal progress. So what does that future look like? What will it take to deliver meaningful reform? And how can architects once again be seen — not just as designers of buildings — but as stewards of a better, fairer, more sustainable world?ResourcesWeston Williamson + Partners websiteRoyal Institute of British Architects – RIBA websiteChris Williams elected RIBA PresidentChris Williamson's presidential bidThe Stirling PrizeChris on “Your Architect” by Derek SeniorRIBA amendments to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill
Members of minority religious groups say they feel less safe in the UK than ever before.A summer of protests outside asylum seeker hotels and a renewed debate about immigration have led to concerns British society is becoming increasingly fragmented. And last week, figures released by the Home Office showed that religious hate crime recorded by police in England and Wales had reached a record high. Some members of the Sikh community in the West Midlands have been escorting elderly people to their local gurdwara due to concerns about physical and verbal abuse. What are the causes behind this rise in hate crime? How are minority groups responding, and what can be done to rebuild fragile communities?Niall is joined by Rabbi Josh Levy, the co-lead of Progressive Judaism, and Sky's communities correspondent Lisa Holland.Producer: Tom GillespieEditor: Mike Bovill

We are BACK with Season 14, and Bethan is back too! In September 1978, 13-year-old paperboy Carl Bridgewater was brutally murdered while delivering newspapers in the West Midlands. His senseless death shocked the nation, and the police investigation that followed would become one of the most controversial in British legal history — leading to wrongful convictions, decades of appeals, and still, after more than forty years, unanswered questions about who killed Carl. Episode 187:This episode is both an ending and a beginning. An ending because it is the last of the recent run of consecutive guest episodes – next time we will be returning to Shakespeare, Jonson and their plays – but it is also the first of what I hope will be a series of guest episodes attached to each of the very significant Shakespeare plays that are coming up soon. With the very well-known and arguably greatest of Shakespeare's plays the task of providing some meaningful commentary is, I have found, very daunting, so I thought it would be a good idea to have another view on these plays to bring another perspective to them besides my own. I am also keen for those views to be born from the practical experience of producing the plays and understanding them from an actor's perspective and therefore as a result of close exploration of the text. The mist seemed to be swirling across the surface of the water at a measured deliberate pace; the woman watched in complete disbelief as it began to form into the shape of a human-like figure with wings. As the figure continued to take shape and rise above the water, she wasn't sure if it was an angel, demon, good, nefarious; but she knew it wasn't of this earth and it had some intent towards her – the woman panicked and fled the park as quickly as she could. This is episode 39 of the Haunted UK Podcast, and in this episode, we're going to learn about the ghosts and hauntings which go on at a house which was never, or perhaps … could be lived in: Woodchester Mansion.Do you love ghost stories, tales of haunted houses and poltergeist encounters?
