Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. 8 more 70's movie reviews in the can, and they are
1. (A Late Liz 1971) Campy “god can stop yer drinking” movie, that made me an even bigger fan of Anne Baxter. I want her to blow into many of my life's situations and read the room.
2. (A New Leaf 1971) Elaine May stars and directs this dark comedy classic. Even in 73 Walter Matthau was gettin too old for this shit. This is quite good, but he's better as a tipsy baseball coach.
3.(Under Milk Wood 1971) What the heck is this arty poetry stuff, More Elizabeth Taylor please.
4.(Murder on the Orient Express 1974) Agatha Christie murder mystery book is put on film by director Sidney Lumet in the most competent way ever, in my opinion. One of those films where every actor is here.
5.(Apple Pie 1975)New York arty guy wants more than 5 bux for walkin around money from his parents, what ever shall he do.
6.(Our Winning Season 1978) 3 teens in high school try to figure out and work towards their hopes and dreams only to run face first into patriarchy and the Vietnam war draft.
7.(The Shout 1978) Alien in the tummy guy, Dr. Frankerfurter, Superman's Mom, and Alan Bates star in this movie that is weird. Also the “Shout” itself is quite loud.
8.(Fatso 1980) Ann Bancroft writes and directs this one. Dom Deluise is trying to find love and Health in a cruel harsh world.
Hey friends hang in there please.
As always thanks for listening.

"They've been waiting far too long": Alan Bates digs into the fight against the Post Office In 1999 the British Post Office introduced a faulty piece of accounting software, the consequences of which would see over 900 subpostmasters wrongly prosecuted for theft, fraud, and false accounting. Some lost their businesses, jobs, and homes, and many were left financially ruined. Others were convicted and sent to prison, some dying while they waited for justice. The case has been highlighted in the ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office; the prosecution of Post Office subpostmasters being described as ‘Great Britain's worst miscarriage of justice'. Alan Bates, a former subpostmaster, has been leading the charge and this week gave a strong witness statement at the public inquiry into the Horizon IT scandal. He told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame that the outpouring of support from across the nation has been absolutely wonderful, and they may need to engage it going forward. “Some of the, if you might call them, the baddies in all of this might be trying to get away scot-free,” Bates said. “We have real concerns that they need to be held accountable for their actions in all of this, and often that fails to happen in so many of these big scandals with big firms.” Bates told Tame that he's never really struggled with accounting, so when the Horizon system was introduced to his own Post Office, he could see it was lacking from the outset. “Once problems started occurring, it was pretty obvious what was the root cause of it all.” He's worked with computer systems before so he could not only see the issues with the programme itself, but with the stances the Post Office was taking on it. Bates said they could never give him an assurance over the accuracy of the system, and they kept swearing no one else could access it, despite it being a network system that anyone could access if they had the right codes. “They just terminated me, given me three months' notice and walked off with the investment.” Bates professes to be something of a stubborn man, telling Tame that he knew his stance on the system was right and so he dug his heels in on it. “We started meeting others over the years, and then we found out we weren't the only ones, and they weren't the only ones, and we sort of grew from there.” In Bates' opinion, a lot of this whole event has been about controlling the narrative, which the Post Office with its significant resources was able to do for ‘donkey's years'. “It wasn't until we got them in the court, into the high court, and we got the judgements, the outstanding judgements from Judge Fraser, that the narrative changed.” “They started losing their footing in all of this, and we started to take over.” The most important thing in all of this, Bates told Tame, is getting the financial redress for the victims. “They've been waiting far too long.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Elegant. That was the adjective used by Team Vintage Sand's own Michael Edmund to describe why the films of Joseph Losey are so important to him, and why he has been such a huge fan of Losey's for nearly all of his film-going life. Losey's was a name that seemed to keep popping up in a wide variety of contexts over the course of the podcast, so, after many delays, we are proud to present Episode 54—Director's Cut: Joseph Losey. Losey's is a unique career in the sense that it really was two distinct careers. After growing up in a life of privilege in Wisconsin (where he was a high school classmate of another pretty good director, Nicholas Ray) and an education at Harvard and Dartmouth, Losey made his way to Hollywood and directed a couple of interesting, low-budget films. Among these were the stilted but prescient "The Boy with Green Hair" (1948), and the rather senseless remake of Lang's "M" (1951), the latter replete with awful soundtrack music and LA sunshine. One possible reason that Losey might have gotten involved with this misguided effort might have been to give actors (Luther Adler, Martin Gabel) and other creatives (screenwriter Waldo Salt), who had been or were about to be blacklisted, a shot at getting some work. Losey himself, an unapologetic member of the Communist Party and an important creative associate of Bertolt Brecht, knew that when Brecht was called before HUAC, it was only a matter of time before he would meet the same fate. So before he could be summoned, he fled to London, and never again worked in the United States for the remaining three decades of his life. He began his English period with some low budget films, some of which, like 1954's "The Sleeping Tiger", still hold some interest. It was during this period, however, that he met two men who were going to help him create the reputation that he still carries to this day, that of a director of great style whose films, not surprisingly given his own life experience, were always political without ever dealing directly with politics: the actor Dirk Bogarde, and the legendary playwright Harold Pinter. Their first work together, 1963's "The Servant", is generally regarded as Losey's masterpiece. It is an absolute evisceration of a rotting class system that has yet to realize its time has passed and that the empire on which it was founded has disintegrated. The complex, ever-changing relationship between upper class twit Tony (the wonderful James Fox) and Barrett, the manservant Tony hires (Bogarde), is cold, chilling and surprising right to the very end. Losey continued his obsession with social class in the World War I drama "King and Country" (1964), a film with a setup similar to "Paths of Glory" that in some ways is an even more powerful anti-war statement than Kubrick's film. Losey teamed up again, somewhat less successfully, with Pinter and Bogarde for 1967's "Accident", and with Pinter for one more masterpiece, 1971's "The Go-Between", a gorgeous period piece featuring pitch-perfect performances by Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, newcomer Dominic Guard as the titular young man, and especially by the never-more-luminous Julie Christie. There are no easy answers when it comes to Losey, but two things come to mind. As John notes in the episode, had Losey not fled persecution and stayed in America, he probably would have been nothing more than a more-talented-than-average studio hack. Exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him, and it may be a direct result of his outsider status that Losey was able to cast an even sharper eye on the follies and perils of the dying English class system more effectively even than the great native British directors of the 1960's. Whatever your thoughts on his work, in the end, it is that aforementioned elegance and intelligence that make Losey's best films worth watching today.

Starring Reed alongside Alan Bates, Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden, the film examines love, sex and death in all manner of permutations, and manages to fit in some notorious nude man-on-man grappling just for fun. We go deep on the film's explicit queerness, the difficulty of working with temperamental actors (and directors) and so much more. ENJOY! The Post Office Horizon IT Scandal represents the biggest single series of wrongful convictions in British legal history. Brought to life in the hit ITV series "Mr Bates vs. The Post Office", the story hit the headlines in early 2024 and at the time of publication is the subject of a major public inquiry.Faulty equipment and computer software made it look as though money was missing from post office branch accounts and the sub-postmasters' contracts held them personally liable. More than 900 were prosecuted, many went to prison and many others were financially ruined. In this very special episode, I am privileged to be joined by one of the subpostmasters affected, Jess Kaur, whose story was told in the ITV drama. We are also joined by TV actress Krupa Pattani who played Jess on screen as 'Sam Kaur'.If you've watched the series, you'll not be able to forget the scene when Sam's husband walks in to find her bleeding with a knife in her hand. We'll talk about that, how Jess talked to her children about what she went through and how Krupa prepared for such an important scene. It's been a harrowing road for Jess and she has been very brave to come on and tell her story. I am deeply grateful. The TV series has prompted a renewed sense of urgency for action, but most victims of the scandal remain without an apology and without compensation for what they have experienced. I hope that interviews like this will help to raise awareness of the personal toll that the scandal took on those affected, and will support those in power to ensure that justice is done.--Mr Bates vs. The Post Office: https://www.itv.com/watch/mr-bates-vs-the-post-office/10a0469/10a0469a0001Mr Bates vs. The Post Office on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Bates_vs_The_Post_OfficeJess Kaur on Good Morning Britain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mBvCZOD4LM --The Unlock Moment podcast is brought to you by Dr Gary Crotaz, PhD. Alan Bates: Former subpostmaster on the Horizon IT scandal and the fight against the British Post Office

In 1999 the British Post Office introduced a faulty piece of accounting software, the consequences of which would see over 900 subpostmasters wrongly prosecuted for theft, fraud, and false accounting.

Phase 3 of the inquiry begins with a statement on the running sore of Postmaster compensation (three schemes now running and counting) - we have news of Alan Bates, founder of the Justice for Subpostmasters' Alliance turning down an OBE - Nick has got his hands on the Altman Advice (or one of them, anyway) and oh yes - all the evidence from the inquiry itself. It's all go-ish. The inquiry evidence was a bit dull.

From Instagram to Netflix, there's no shortage of  content celebrating the creative side of the culinary world.Yet there's precious little coverage of the dark side of the hospitality industry and, in particular, the mental health issues that many restaurant workers face.In fact, from burnout to suicide, substance abuse to toxic masculinity, the restaurant industry may well have more problems than most.Today, though, more and more people are trying to make a difference. From tackling taboos about mental health to creating healthier work environments, increasing numbers of restaurateurs and activists are making employee well-being a vital ingredient of any gastronomic endeavour. So in this episode of The Recipe — the final one of the season — we'll hear from three such individuals:A Dutch chef who decided to close his Spanish restaurant at the weekends so he could spend more time with his girlfriend.A British chef who has sought to create a “psychologically safe” environment for his staff. And the founder of a social enterprise committed to de-stigmatising  discussions about mental health issues within the hospitality industry.Further information:Alan Bates, Connection by Alan Bateshttps://www.connectioncph.dk/https://www.instagram.com/alan.g.bates/https://www.instagram.com/connectioncph/Dennis Van Tintelen, La Mar Chicahttps://www.mar-chica.com/https://www.instagram.com/chefdennis_/https://www.instagram.com/mar_chica/Kris Hall, The Burnt Chef Projecthttps://www.theburntchefproject.com/https://www.instagram.com/theburntchefproject/

“Teach me to dance!” Professor Vrasidas Karalis of Sydney University, and renowned conductor/composer, George Ellis join the boys in the Distillery for a drink and a chat about one of – if not the most – iconic modern Greek texts, “Zorba the Greek”. From the original book by Nikos Kazantzakis, to the 1964 film starring Anthony Quinn, Alana Bates and Irene Pappas, to the incredible music of Mikis Theodorakis, Zorba has become a part of Greek culture and for many non-Greeks, was their introduction to Greece. Professor Karalis and Ellis provide insightful commentary, informed by having met key members of the cast and crew of the film, resulting in one of the more incredible and in-depth Ouzo Talk discussions. In early February, 2002, Alan Bates and his wife, Terra Bates, pulled up to a home in Birmingham Alabama to pick up Alan's two young daughters from their mother's house so Alan could spend time with them. They were, maybe, a little nervous and ready for a fight… because at this point, the relationship between Alan and his ex-wife, Jessica McCord, had been rocky and incredibly confrontational for years. But Alan loved his daughters. He wanted to see them, so he wasn't letting the issues with their mother get in the way. He and Terra had actually flown out from their home in Maryland to do just that… and they weren't going to go back without Alan seeing them and being able to spend some time with them. So when they saw the note on the front door saying that the McCord's were having problems with their front door and asking them to come around to the back one instead, they did just as instructed. Btw, Things were incredibly tense between both couples because the Bates's were also in town to testify against the McCord's… so that they could get custody of the two girls and this was going to be the climax of a story that had gone on for years and years.
