Phil Harding had his hands in as many hits in the 80s/90s as anyone you care to mention. We will only concern ourselves with the better decade as we look into his career as producer/engineer and mixer.1. THE EARLY YEARS (Pre-1980-83)How Phil got into the business in the 70s, working with the likes of Gerry Rafferty (Baker Street!), The Walker Brothers (No Regrets!) and The Clash (White Man in Hammersmith Palais!), etc.Phil moves into the 80s with KIlling Joke and a very unique contribution to Sign of The Times by The Belle Stars. There is discussion on the differences (and similarities) between mixing pop and rock.2. MATT BIANCO/BASIA (1984-88)Working with Peter Collins leads to engineering Matt Bianco's first album which leads to Phil producing the follow up and mixing Basia's first solo LP. Through Peter connections are made with Pete Waterman.General chat on Phil's approach to mixing a track.3. STOCK AITKEN AND WATERMAN (PT 1) (1983-87)Phil enters the world of SAW. Talk of who did what within the team and experiences with Lamont Dozier, Princess, Mel & Kim and early Rick Astley.Further talk on who had "Woolworth's ears" and why SAW didn't produce Pet Shop Boys.4. DEAD OR ALIVE (1986-88)Let's face it, this section is almost exclusively about You Spin Me Round, the first SAW number one and an iconic 80s hit.5. BANANARAMA (1986-88)Working on Venus, Bananarama wanted the Spin-Me-Round hi NRG treatment, leading to a number of massive pop hits.  Also discussed is the Bananarama vocal approach and how it was decided who at the Hit Factory worked on what.EITHER/OR | Does Phil have the Terminator listen to Prince on his ghettoblaster or Robocop listen to MJ on his walkman?Phil can be found Website: philhardingmusic.comTwitter: @phardingmusicFacebook: Phil Harding80sography@gmail.comSend us a text

Welcome to the seventh episode of the series, "Empowering Others to Lead with Purpose" featuring Peggy O'Neal, American born Australian lawyer, Chancellor of RMIT University and former president of Richmond Football Club (AFL).  Peggy O'Neal's journey into leadership began in the coal fields of her US hometown, where she grew up surrounded by a tough, working-class environment. A pivotal influence in her life was her mother, who instilled a sense of purpose and encouraged Peggy to break barriers by studying law, making her the first in her family to do so. Fast forward to her new home in Australia, Peggy's leadership path has been marked by significant achievements. She became a leader in law, served as Chancellor of RMIT University, and was President of the Richmond Football Club, leading the team to three premierships in just four years. Central to her success is her unwavering sense of purpose—creating opportunities and uniting people. This sense of purpose is reflected in her approach to leadership: fostering trust, building connections, and consistently repeating these behaviours until they become defining habits. ______________________________________________________________________________________ In complexity, the anchor that ensures progress is made is the identification of a shared purpose, underpinned by the values and principles that enact that purpose. JJ Jackson chats with Drake C. Toll of Locked On Big 12 in this CROSSOVER episode as they discuss what could be next for the Duke Blue Devils if the ACC were to end and as the conference realignment chatter continues. The Florida State board of trustees unanimously decided to take legal action against the ACC, aiming to contest the legality of the league's grant of rights and the substantial $130 million withdrawal fee. This step is deemed necessary to navigate the school's future and explore the possibility of departing from the conference. A comprehensive 38-page lawsuit has been filed in the Leon County Circuit Court in Tallahassee, Florida, seeking a declaratory judgment against the ACC. The lawsuit argues that the grant of rights and withdrawal fee are "unreasonable restraints of trade in the state of Florida and not enforceable in their entirety against Florida State." The university alleges "chronic fiduciary mismanagement and bad faith" on the part of the ACC concerning its multimedia rights agreements, which have allegedly hindered revenue opportunities for its members. Additionally, Florida State accuses the ACC of breach of contract and failure to fulfill its obligations. Board chair Peter Collins stated, "I believe this board has been left with no choice but to challenge the legitimacy of the ACC grant of rights and its severe withdrawal penalties. None of us relish being in this position. However, I believe that we have exhausted all possible remedies within the conference, and we must prioritize what we believe is best for Florida State, not only in the short term but also in the long term." This move by Florida State marks uncharted territory, as no school has previously contested a grant of rights in court. ACC officials have previously touted the document as "ironclad," suggesting that its language is so stringent that it would effectively prevent schools from leaving. However, because no school has challenged the document in court before, its actual enforceability remains uncertain. Twitter: @LO_BlueDevils | @_JJ_Jackson_ The Locked On Blue Devils Podcast with host JJ Jackson is a daily show that brings you the latest news & headlines from Duke Blue Devils Athletics. The Florida State board of trustees unanimously decided to take legal action against the ACC on Friday, aiming to contest the legality of the league's grant of rights and the substantial $130 million withdrawal fee. This step is deemed necessary to navigate the school's future and explore the possibility of departing from the conference.A comprehensive 38-page lawsuit has been filed in the Leon County Circuit Court in Tallahassee, Florida, seeking a declaratory judgment against the ACC. The lawsuit argues that the grant of rights and withdrawal fee are "unreasonable restraints of trade in the state of Florida and not enforceable in their entirety against Florida State."The university alleges "chronic fiduciary mismanagement and bad faith" on the part of the ACC concerning its multimedia rights agreements, which have allegedly hindered revenue opportunities for its members. Additionally, Florida State accuses the ACC of breach of contract and failure to fulfill its obligations.Board chair Peter Collins stated, "I believe this board has been left with no choice but to challenge the legitimacy of the ACC grant of rights and its severe withdrawal penalties. None of us relish being in this position. However, I believe that we have exhausted all possible remedies within the conference, and we must prioritize what we believe is best for Florida State, not only in the short term but also in the long term."This move by Florida State marks uncharted territory, as no school has previously contested a grant of rights in court.ACC officials have previously touted the document as "ironclad," suggesting that its language is so stringent that it would effectively prevent schools from leaving. However, because no school has challenged the document in court before, its actual enforceability remains uncertain.ACC commissioner Jim Phillips and Virginia president Jim Ryan, chair of the ACC board of directors, expressed disappointment in Florida State's actions, labeling them as "unprecedented and overreaching" in a statement.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! RobinhoodRobinhood has the only IRA that gives you a 3% boost on every dollar you contribute when you subscribe to Robinhood Gold. Now through April 30th, Robinhood is even boosting every single dollar you transfer in from other retirement accounts with a 3% match. Florida State's Board of Trustees took the first step of leaving the ACC today, with members voting unanimously to legally challenge the Atlantic Coast Conference's Grant of Right agreement. “Today we've reached a crossroad in our relationship with the ACC,” FSU Board of Trustees chair Peter Collins said. “I believe this board has been left no choice but to challenge the legitimacy of the ACC grant of rights and its severe withdrawal penalties” FSU outside council David Ashburn laid out what FSU will argue to challenge the Grant of Rights, among them: The ACC's exit fees and Grant of Rights penalty violate Florida antitrust law The GOR presents an unenforceable penalty Breach of contract Breach of fiduciary duty Violation of Public Policy Fundamental failure of contractual purpose Several new bombshell pieces of information came to light during today's meeting The ACC is not guaranteed any television revenue after 2027 — something that was unable to be known unless members took the time to fly to Charlotte and review the locked-down contract. ESPN has a unilateral right to extend the ACC's media deal after 2027 but hasn't exercised that option yet. The ACC also extended the window for ESPN to pick up that option until 2025 without a vote of the schools or conference directors as was required by the conference bylaws. Ashburn stated that FSU signed the 2016 Grant of Rights agreement because ESPN gave an ultimatum that it would not enter into any additional media agreements unless the GOR was extended through 2036. He immediately followed that with “We don't believe that holds water.” Speculation began stirring when reports surfaced earlier this week about FSU exploring its future in the ACC. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Florida State will likely partner with Sixth Street Partners to help fund the ACC exit. Florida State's relationship with the conference has become increasingly strained over the last year. Florida State Athletic Director Michael Alford gave a presentation to the FSU Board of Trustees last February outlining the growing financial gap ACC schools will be facing compared to those in the Big Ten and SEC. Alford gave a blunt summation of the situation with “Something has to change.” Just prior to the annual ACC meetings in May 2023 news of the “Magnificent Seven” in the ACC sent shock waves across the college football landscape. It became known that Florida State, Clemson, Miami, UNC, NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech had explored possible avenues to leave the conference. The ACC then undertook a controversial western expansion adding Cal, Stanford, and SMU despite objections from Florida State, UNC, and Clemson. This was speculated to be a move to act as a buffer against future defections. Florida State's snub from the College Football Playoff was the straw that broke the camel's back. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips was largely absent while SEC commissioner Greg Sankey was on ESPN constantly lobbying for a spot for his conference. FSU becoming the first undefeated Power 5 conference champion to be left out of the playoffs confirmed the ACC's spot as a 2nd tier league going forward. Learn more about your ad choices. The Australian arm of consulting firm PwC is embroiled in an unprecedented political scandal following revelations that senior staff sold confidential information on government tax reforms to its multinational clients. PwC is defending allegations that it engaged in a deliberate multi-year strategy to cover up a breach of confidentiality in the tax leak scandal. The form stands accused of "monetising" confidential information that it obtained as a consultant to the government on laws to target multinational tax avoidance. The scandal has led to investigations from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the prospect of a referral to the new National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). PwC is also navigating a probe from the national accounting body, numerous Senate inquiries, and three internal reviews within PwC, including one led by its global leadership. The case has also cast a cloud over the firm's 900 partners in Australia and 10,000 staff, leaving the organisation in damage control mode. Peter Collins, PwC Australia's head of international tax, has been banned by the Tax Practitioners' Board (TPB) for his involvement in the scheme. In a bid to stem the losses, PwC now plans to sell off its government consulting business, which generates A$600 million in annual revenue, for A$1 to private equity group Allegro. It is estimated that 130 partners and 2,000 staff will leave to join the new entity. In this episode of Compliance Clarified, Nathan Lynch discusses this unfolding corporate disaster with Niall Coburn, a lawyer and regulatory risk expert with Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence in Australia.IMPACT ANALYSIS: Consulting firms warn staff about ethics as PwC misconduct is referred to police: http://go-ri.tr.com/WAlKdrCOLUMN: Australian Senate hands down PwC report, as firm sells government consulting arm for A$1: http://go-ri.tr.com/UKcnL3OPINION: Culture crisis at PwC Australia offers uncomfortable reminders of past accounting scandals: http://go-ri.tr.com/jUlpM6COLUMN: Australian regulatory body investigates PwC over unethical conduct involving U.S. tech giants: http://go-ri.tr.com/7a6KopCOLUMN: Evidence reveals PwC's Australian partners and staff profited from unscrupulous tax leak: http://go-ri.tr.com/27gXDz Compliance Clarified is a podcast from Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence.Listen to wide-ranging, insightful discussions on all things compliance for financial services firms. Synopsis She's been called a “British Gershwin” but perhaps a “British Poulenc” might more accurately describe the genial and graceful music of Madeleine Dring, a woman whose diverse and energetic creative life was cut short, when, at the age of 53, she died suddenly on today's date in 1977. Madeleine Dring was born into a talented musical family in 1923, and she showed early promise.  On her tenth birthday she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in London, and eventually studied composition with Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gordon Jacob.  Dring was soon providing incidental music and songs for amateur and professional theatrics.  She was also a gifted singer and actress, and performed occasionally on stage and television. Dring married the British oboist, Roger Lord, and a number of her chamber works feature that instrument. Six volumes of her songs were published after her death, largely through the persistence of her husband, and many of her other works have been published, performed, and recorded with increasing frequency, especially in the United States. Sadly, Dring died just when women composers began to receive increasing attention from music historians, performers, and audiences worldwide. A British survey of her life and music was published in 2000. Lead singer, Geoff Tate cam up with the idea of the concept album after living in Canada and then convinced guitarist, Chris DeGarmo who then got the rest of the band interested. The story is about a man named, Nikki who gets involved in political assassinations, drugs and revolutions. The band was led by vocalist Geoff Tate and his unique look and incredible vocal range. The dual guitar attack of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton and rhythm section of bassist, Eddie Jackson and drummer, Scott Rockenfield provide the unique Queensryche sound. The album was produced by Peter Collins and showed that Queensryche although wrongly lumped in with hair metal bands of that era, was something original and had something to say. . On the 39th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1988 concept album by Queensryche, "Operation: Mindcrime." This was Queensryche's 3rd studio album. The album was produced by Peter Collins and showed that Queensryche although wrongly lumped in with hair metal bands of that era, was something original and had something to say. . As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 35 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. That's right. Another Rush album! What a shock. Destin and Drew are joined yet again by the phenomenal Rachel Brown to discuss the "80s Rush sound" that pervades the 1985 release Power Windows. Along with a careful look at how Geddy Lee's voice matured over the years, these three discuss the important contributions of producer Peter Collins, the concepts presented from masterful wordsmith and lyricist Neil Peart, and Alex Lifeson's incredible guitar work that is often overlooked, especially in such a synth-laden era of Rush's catalogue. And to top it all off, the Prog Notes team pontificates on Hugh Syme's evocative album artwork on another addition of Illustrations and Impressions. Buckle up. In this episode, it's all Rush, all the time. No exceptions. Check us out HERE! **Prog Notes is a podcast dedicated to the genre of progressive rock. Each episode Destin and Drew tackle an album and delve into the different musical compositions, lyrics, and concepts that make it prog rock. They maintain that progressive rock is still very much alive and kicking, whether it be highlighting key moments from the early years or tracking the evolution of the genre to today's more modern groups. With each new episode, these two childhood friends encourage more people to investigate this unique, sometimes forgotten genre of music and find an album or band they can enjoy. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
