Technology which harnesses lightning's nitrogen-fixing properties could revolutionise fertiliser production and supply, cut carbon emissions and support soil health. The Agri-Tech Centres are working with innovative start-up Debye Ltd. to trial its ground-breaking system, which simulates lightning's ability to capture nitrogen in the form of nitrates when it strikes water. Innovative Lightning-based fertiliser tech Debye envisage modular and containerised systems sited on farms or hubs, giving farmers on-the-spot or local supply of nitrate-based fertiliser using only air, water and electricity. The 18-month feasibility R&D project is taking place on lettuce crops in Agri-Tech Centre CHAP's vertical farming facility at Stockbridge, with fellow Centre Agri-EPI providing project management and life-cycle analysis, measuring the product's environmental and economical sustainability at each stage of its development. The objective is to develop a one-kilowatt proof-of-concept prototype, to quantify and compare crop yields and post-harvest properties for standard nitrogen fertiliser and fertiliser produced by Debye Ltd.'s machine and to determine its commercial viability. If the trial is successful, Debye could undertake small-scale pilot projects on a farm setting within three years, subject to funding. The project is funded by Innovate UK and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council's Novel low-emission food production systems: Feasibility studies competition. The Agri-Tech Centres help innovative start-ups throughout their journey; securing funding, providing access to research facilities to test, demonstrate and validate new ideas to overcome the agri-industry's critical challenges, such as climate change and environmental sustainability. Burak Karadag, who developed the technology, was originally a space engineer, working on satellite propulsion, when he became interested in the properties of lightning and realised that he would like to see how he could apply space technology to grand challenges on earth. Dr. Burak Karadag, chief technical officer, Debye Ltd said: "Fertiliser is critical to global food security, but current production methods cause environmental harm and are subject to market disruption. "Our technology harnesses nature's own elegant solution: lightning strikes water with such energy that it breaks apart atmospheric nitrogen molecules, creating nitrogen dioxide, which is soluble in water and readily absorbed by plants. Our technology replicates these principles using only air, water and electricity. "Farmers rely mostly on ammonia-based fertiliser, whose economic model relies on mid- to large-scale production using natural gas and with well-documented negative effects on air, soil and water quality. Manufacturers are trying to move to green hydrogen reduce the fertiliser's carbon footprint, but local, renewably powered direct nitrogen capture technology could make it a near zero-emission process, locally and securely available and with far better soil health outcomes. "Today's synthetic fertiliser production accounts for five per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to half the total emissions produced by the EU27 in 2021. Just imagine if we could remove those emissions! Being a rocket scientist was undeniably exciting, but I was so motivated by the challenge of tackling climate change and enhancing food security through innovation that I was glad to make the career shift to agriculture." Dr. Harry Langford, Innovation Network Lead at CHAP, said: "Fertilisers are critical to secure food production, but economic and environmental concerns are driving a renewed focus on both diversification in practice, towards alternative fertiliser types, and technological innovation, to enhance production and application efficiency. The Agri-Tech Centres are delighted to be working with Debye Ltd. to test the feasibility of this exciting technology and help to determine its value proposition....
This week Ivan Vejvoda is joined by Johns Hopkins University - School of Advanced International Studies adjunct professor and former foreign policy advisor to the Romanian presidential administration Veronica Anghel to discuss the state of EU enlargement policy in 2023. As the continent redefines itself, its security and its long-term objectives in the shadow of the full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, what is the state of play for candidate countries seeking to join the European Union? Will this prove to be a moment when the expansion of the EU's border to encompass Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkans - a project that many considered stalled -can be revived? How have the requirements for entry and justification for enlargement changed since the fall of communism in the early 90s? Are unresolved border questions and the rise of right wing populism affecting the way that the EU27 approaches these questions? Veronica Anghel is a Lecturer in Risk in International Politics and Economics at Johns Hopkins University and a Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute EUI. She has held research fellowships at several institutions, including Stanford University and the Institute for Central Europe. She is a 'Robert Elgie' Editorial Fellow with the 'Government and Opposition' journal. Dr. Anghel received her PhD from the University of Bucharest in co-direction with the University of Bordeaux. Last week (10 November), the European Commission tabled temporary emergency rules to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies like wind and solar, saying the ongoing energy crisis fuelled by Russia's war in Ukraine calls for exceptional measures. Under the proposal, renewable energy projects “would be presumed to be of overriding public interest” and benefit from shorter permitting procedures ranging from one month for solar rooftop installations to six months for the repowering of large wind farms. The proposal is currently being examined by EU member states, with the bloc's energy ministers due to meet in Brussels on 24 November to reach a political agreement. But the wind and solar industry are worried about language in the regulation specifying that the faster-permitting rules should apply to “new” projects only. Indeed, the presumption that renewables are of overriding public interest “only applies to new permitting procedures that start during the application of the regulation,” says the Commission proposal presented last week. A draft of the member states' position on the proposal, seen by EURACTIV, hammers the point home by adding a new Article 1a stipulating that: “this regulation applies to all permitting procedures with a starting date within the duration of its application”. For the renewable energy industry, this means hundreds of gigawatts of solar and wind projects will remain stuck in the administrative pipeline. “It's daft to apply this only to new projects,” said Giles Dickson, the CEO of WindEurope, an industry association. According to Dickson, there are “at least 100 GW of wind and solar combined which are currently stuck in permitting” procedures, and “probably a lot more”. And those will remain unaffected by the emergency permitting rules if the proposal goes through. Solar industry representatives are worried as well. “There is currently a very significant volume of projects across the EU27, at different stages of development,” says Dries Acke, policy director at SolarPower Europe, an industry association. If that pipeline of projects was accelerated, it “could significantly progress the self-proclaimed aims of the Regulation: help to mitigate the effects of the current crisis, strengthen the Union's security of supply, reduce volatility in the market and lower energy prices,” Acke told EURACTIV. Environmental think-tank Ember found that 70-80% of the power system in Europe—including the EU27, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, and the Western Balkan countries—could be supplied by wind and solar generation, while relegating fossil fuels to under 5% of its total consumption. Ditching fossil fuels could save Europe as much as €1 trillion by 2035. This would bring numerous benefits for public health and the citizens' pockets, as well as put the continent on track to achieve its environmental objectives. In this episode, we discuss with Ember's senior energy and climate data analyst Chris Rosslowe how to make the transition to a clean power sector in Europe happen. Chris specialises in clean energy systems and in his role at Ember uses future energy scenarios to provide insights and key data to track and guide the transition from fossil to clean. He previously held roles in the UK Civil Service analysing energy and environmental policy and holds a PhD in astrophysics. With fuel prices soaring, WE need a new fuel source, WE need a Green Hydrogen Revolution. Electrification cannot get us to net zero. So many things require natural gas; fertilisers, Plastics, and other essential chemicals. But we can replace Natural gas with Hydrogen. 8 months ago we talked about the Many colours of Hydrogen, and since then the Government has formed a Hydrogen working group, a group that is trying to Accelerate the Green Hydrogen Revolution. Their latest report, by RENEWABLE UK states that this Green Hydrogen Revolution will "solve the challenge of integrating renewables into our energy system through, for example, the provision of system balancing services, seasonal storage and by minimising curtailment of renewables" Momentum for this Green Hydrogen Revolution is gathering worldwide as an increasing number of stakeholders view it as a critical component of future energy systems. Over 40 countries (including the EU27) have hydrogen strategies, and at least 13 have targets specific to green hydrogen. More recently, the European Commission outlined its plan to achieve EU independence from Russian fossil fuels by quadrupling its 2030 target to 20.6Mt of green hydrogen, which will require well in excess of 100GW of both electrolyser and renewable generation capacity.

SMEs play a significant role in the economic well-being of the EU economy, accounting for over 60% of employment across the EU27 and the UK. SMEs are also a key driving factor for economic inclusivity. They push forward economic innovation and flexibility given their importance to entrepreneurship and new market entry, adoption of new innovative technologies, and overall wider benefits to market competition and ultimately to consumers.Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, many SMEs expressed cautious optimism, with a positive economic outlook for growth and the opportunity to invest. But COVID-19 has seen many SMEs in a fight for survival. Despite the benefits of digitalisation, the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2020 data found SMEs lag behind larger businesses in adoption of nearly all technologies despite being connected to the internet at the same rate. This ‘digital divide' presents policymakers with the task of supporting SMEs in the economic recovery. While all SMEs have been impacted and face risks due to COVID-19, it is clear that the more digitalised SMEs - operating in sectors such as financial/insurance services and professional services - have identified new business opportunities in the pandemic economy at a higher rate than the less digitalised businesses, such as those operating in the construction, manufacturing and hospitality sectors.Challenges related to availability, capacity and capability impede the ability of SMEs to digitalise and ultimately find new business opportunities. SMEs therefore look to policymakers to help with availability of tools and technologies required for digitalisation, such as high-speed connectivity in urban and rural areas; capacity (financial and time) to engage with digital transformations; and the capability to gauge, plan, implement and optimise their digital transformations through digital skills.Listen to this EURACTIV – GIGAEurope Digital Debate to find out how policymakers can support SMEs to maintain their economic resilience post-pandemic. Questions included:- Are current EU and national policies equipped to support SMEs in the cases of availability, capacity and capability?- How can policy best mitigate a digital divide amongst European SMEs by addressing the financial constraints that impede the ability of SMEs to digitalise?- Should the opportunities presented by the use of digital (e.g. flexible working) be prioritised in ongoing government policy support?- What should a tailored policy approach look like for SMEs, as there can clearly not be a ‘one size fits all' approach for ongoing SME support?

Original Source : https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/more-than-1-million-new-zero-emission-electric-cars-registered-in-europe-this-year EXCLUSIVE: FORD JOIN VW GROUP CO2 POOL IN THE UK - Ford has joined Volkswagen Group's UK-only CO2 pool for 2021. The United Kingdom is no longer part of the EU27 plus Norway and Iceland CO2 fleet average legislation that requires passenger car manufacturers to meet a defined mass-adjusted fleet average CO2 target of 95g/km in the old NEDC drive cycle or closer to 120g/km in the WLTP cycle up to 2025, which is being adopted in the UK-only, for the first year. - With the UK's departure from the EU and the following one year transition period, 2021 is the first year the UK is independently setting their own fleet average target, which has by and large been carried over from the EU's system with only very minor changes. - During the opening 10-months of the year, Ford achieved a market share of just 7.5 per cent of the total new passenger car market with 106,085 new registrations according to SMMT data. During the same period, the Volkswagen brand achieved 130,338 new registrations translating to a leading market share of 9.2%. This is why Ford is doubling its EV projection to 600,000 units per year globally by the end of 2023, but actually should triple it - "but we can't." As we understand, due to the battery availability bottleneck. - "Demand is two to three times what we expected. And so that capacity had to be doubled — probably tripled if we could, but we can't. Lightning, when we first got together we talked about volumes of 20,000 units a year. And I was like, no. So we capacitized something far north of 20,000, but it's nowhere near the 160,000 units of demand we have today. Our reservations are approaching 200,000 units now and we're moving those reservations to actual orders." VOLKSWAGEN HANDS CEO DIESS CONTRACT EXTENSION AHEAD OF STRATEGY PRESENTATION - Volkswagen on Friday handed Chief Executive Herbert Diess a contract extension under which he will lead the carmaker until October 2025, the group said, a victory made possible by the recent departure of works council head Bernd Osterloh. - Volkswagen's supervisory board was discussing a two-year extension to Diess' contract, which would have expired in 2023 - Diess will be able to see through an ambitious goal Europe's largest carmaker has set itself by the middle of the decade, namely becoming the world's leading electric vehicle player and overtaking key rival Tesla - "The Supervisory Board believes that under the leadership of Dr. Diess conditions will be optimal for the continued successful development of the entire company in the coming years as well, especially in view of Strategy 2030," said VW chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch. Now, a large portion of EU recovery funds – 4.3 billion euros ($5.1 billion USD) – will reportedly go toward a Spanish EV investment that aims to ramp up electric vehicle and battery production in the country, according to Reuters. - The EV investment is part of a broader 13 billion euro incentive geared toward sustainable transportation, which is expected to grow by five percent by 2030. Spanish officials expect that government initiatives will increase the number of EVs registered in the country from 18,000 in 2020 to 250,000 in 2023, create 140,000 new jobs - the European Union is reportedly planning on tightening its emissions standards in the coming weeks that will effectively result in a new ICE vehicle ban by the year 2030. But federal law that prevents the commercialization of interstate right-of-ways — including rest areas, park-and-rides, and similar facilities across the country — is preventing that. A change to that law, which has CDOT's support, is part of the $715 billion transportation bill the U.S. House passed last week. - The existing federal law dates back to the early 1960s and was intended to protect and promote private businesses — gas stations and the like — along highways. The federal government cited it in turning down a state plan to add charging stations to the Burlington Welcome Center on the Eastern Plains, CDOT officials said in a letter to the state's U.S. House delegation. - The House bill containing the law change now moves to the Senate, which is considering its own transportation proposal. How differences between the two will be reconciled remains unclear so far. The White House has been supportive of both, the Washington Post reported. That's why you're seeing 2021 Bolts priced to move. But what's different this time is, pricing on the 2022 Bolt is a lot lower, starting at $31,995. That's roughly $5,500 off the MSRP for the current base model. And the slightly larger 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, starts at $33,995. The coolant leaked, and he was worried. Tesla told him Bone could drive to a Service Center. He took the car to one, and they detected the vehicle had a broken port. When Bone thought the repair would cost $800, he received news that he would have to pay $16,000 to replace the entire battery pack. - His car did not have comprehensive coverage because he just switched his former car with the Model 3, and his insurance company did not want to pay for the repair. Without options, Bone asked for help in Tesla forums, and someone told him about the Electrified Garage. - The bottom line is that Tesla Service Centers do not perform part replacements, just assembly replacements. In other words, if something small breaks or has to be replaced, they replace the whole module that includes it. - As Bone said, he had the right to keep his old battery pack if he had paid $16,000 for a new one, something that the Service Center was not very willing to accept. This needs to be thought through: fleets cannot merely install a few sockets and hope for the best. A thorough understanding of the fleet's needs, use cases and deployment is required. Businesses must ask themselves: will vehicles charge only overnight at the depot, or will they be taken home by drivers and charged there? Will these vehicles often drive beyond their range, meaning public or ultra-fast DC charging will be needed for a quick turnaround at the depot? - Early adopters of EV fleets have already realised the 20-25% cost savings that come from greater efficiency, more affordable fuelling and reduced maintenance, putting themselves in a pole position for expansion as more vehicles become available and the policy environment moves further towards electrification.

One is the mutual recognition procedure. The second one is the decentralized. And then the third one is the centralized procedure.” “If you get an approval in Europe, there are testings that you have to do for EU.” “Effective planning is the key. Because then basically you know when you're going to get approval and you'll know when you will be able to market.” “So, what is happening now, people who have filed in the UK can no longer sell their products in EU because UK walked away from the European Union. So now they are setting up their own procedures because, by the end of this year, they will be fully separated from the European Union.” “The mutual recognition that is between the FDA and EU, I see that as becoming more and more the norm.” “Once you get the approval [in the EU], you get it in all twenty-seven countries, including Norway, Iceland and I think Lithuania.”Relevant LinksDesign Space InPharmatics – LinkedInDesign Space InPharmatics – TwitterEdward Narke on LinkedInAmber Sheriff on LinkedIn

Recorded earlier this year, in the episode Michaela talks with Lisa in France. In her thirties and married to a French man, she talks about what the EU has meant for her and her life. Moving within Europe as a student and in the first stages of her career, she eventually settled in France with her husband. But this was never the firm plan, just the outcome of changing jobs and personal circumstances. And there were moments when moving to the UK might also have been on the cards, including in the lead up to Brexit. Living in Europe post-Brexit, Lisa explains that her British identity remains important to her but despite Britain no longer being in the EU, she will always feel European. *We had some technical difficulties recording this episode, and so the sound quality is not up to our usual standards!

This corresponds to almost 27 percent of all employees. If one includes the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the number of applications for short-time work rises to more than 50 million. Dr. Torsten Müller of ETUI and Prof. Dr. Thorsten Schulten, head of the WSI collective agreements archive talk about their recent study on "Ensuring fair Short-Time Work - a European overview" in a conversation with Elisa Bruno of the ETUI. Our first episode of 2020, and it’s a throwback to a live recording of presentation that Michaela and Karen gave to colleagues at a conference in Umeå, Sweden. They offer some reflections on the practice of doing research with British citizens living in the EU27 over the course of the Brexit negotiations. As they draw out the complex picture of how these Britons navigate protracted uncertainty, they reflect on a set of key themes emerging from the project. In particular, they discuss the sociological importance of the observation that these Britons living in the EU27 seem to be nobody’s responsibility but their own, left to take matters into their own hands by their own government and the EU.
This episode sees Michaela joined by Adrienne Yong, lecturer at City Law School (https://www.city.ac.uk/people/academics/adrienne-yong), to talk legal perspectives on Brexit and citizens’ rights. Adrienne offers her analysis of what case law reveals about shifts within legal understandings of EU citizenship. She charts the trajectory of EU citizenship from its base in market citizenship—where the rights of citizenship are in the service of economic integration within the Union—towards an approach more grounded in fundamental rights which takes as a starting point the citizen. Discussing settled status for EU citizens in the UK and the loss of EU citizenship for UK nationals living in the EU27, the discussion turns to how these legal perspectives can help us to understand how Brexit sits in relation to what has come before. Read more from Adrienne about the removal of EU citizenship in this article for The Conversation (https://theconversation.com/britons-shouldnt-get-their-hopes-up-about-keeping-eu-citizenship-after-brexit-91501)
In the latest of our episodes focussed on Brexit in the real lives of British citizens living in the EU27, Michaela is joined over the Internet by Debbie Williams, founder of BrExpats Hear our Voice (https://brexpatshov.com). She explains how she went from never having been involved in politics beyond voting to founding this group that has had an increasing presence in campaigns for citizens’ rights. They discuss her concerns about the ways in which the human cost of Brexit has been overlooked in the negotiations, the difficulties of getting the voices of those who rights are being transformed heard, and the importance of standing up for these rights at this point in time. And on a personal level, she highlights how Brexit has changed her, the way she looks at the world and caused her to question things that she might previously have taken for granted.
What does Brexit mean for young British citizens living in the EU who have never known anything other than being European? In this episode, Michaela is joined over the Internet by Molly (in Spain) and Naomi (in Germany), campaigners for Young European Voices (https://twitter.com/youngeuvoices). Both in their twenties, they describe what Freedom of Movement has done for them and their families, their emerging sense of themselves as European in response to Brexit and their increased interest and concern about politics across Europe. As they highlight, Brexit has already had an impact on their lives, influencing their plans for the future and life choices as they face a future without Freedom of Movement.
This episode sees Michaela and Chantelle return to understanding the racialised exclusions at the heart of Britishness and other European national identities. They talk with Bel Parnell-Berry (https://project-parnell.com) who lives in the Netherlands. Drawing on the work she does as the programme manager for the European Race and Imagery Foundation (https://erifonline.org), Sinterklass and other practices of blackface across Europe, she talks about the exclusion of people of colour from imaginings of who counts as European. Turning to Brexit, she highlights how campaign groups for the rights of British citizens living in the EU overlooked how the removal of their rights sat in relation to migrant rights more generally, their focus on legal rights overlooked the racist treatment of People of Colour within these populations before and after Brexit. To find out more about Bel’s thoughts on the absence of migrant solidarity in the concerns of British citizens living in the EU in a time of Brexit, read her article for Gal-Der magazine (https://gal-dem.com/silence-allyship-lacking-migrant-solidarity-brits-abroad/)

The British government has reached a deal with the EU27. The agreement is still subject to approval by the British and European parliaments, as well as the European Council. But is it good news for Brussels? How will Britain strike favourable trade deals when all this is over? And, with a new relationship between Brussels, London and the world yet be realised, is this the beginning of the end or just the end of the beginning?
Jean-Claude Piris, head of the EU Council of Minister's Legal Service for 23 years, talks to Paul Adamson about the real meaning of a 'No Deal Brexit' and the prospects of an agreement between the UK and the EU27 under a new British premiership.

In this episode, Dr Michaela Benson focuses on people of colour working and living in the EU27. Who counts as British? and what do those understanding of Britishness do to the ways we understand Brexit?
This week, we’re bringing you something a bit different. Recorded at the recent British Sociological Association conference, Michaela and Chantelle present their recently published work on what Brexit means to British People of Colour living in the EU27. This shifts focus to their experiences of Brexit and how this is located in personal histories of institutional, structural, state and everyday racism. As they argue, placing these narratives centerstage deepens understandings of the relationship between Brexit and racism, permitting a view into how it is caught up in longer histories of racism in Britain but also in Europe.
In this episode, Dr Michaela Benson looks at how Brexit impacts British citizens living in Ireland. What the common travel area means and why it's a lesser known story in Brexit?
In this episode, we talk about migration, daily life and Brexit for Britons living in the EU27 who have complex health and social care needs. In conversation with Roy and Jayne in France, and Millie in Cyprus, Michaela challenges common sense understandings about the ease with which people can pick up their lives and settle elsewhere in the world. She discusses the challenges that migration presents for the parents of children with special needs, and what Brexit and the loss of Freedom of Movement might mean for people in these circumstances. And she highlights how uncertainties about future rights and access to health and social care impact on the lives of these families and individuals.
In this week's episode of Brexit: The Final Countdown, Rebecca Hutson is joined by Paul Baldwin and Thomas Hunt as Theresa May prepares to attend an emergency EU Summit to request an extension to the Brexit process. It's now all eyes on Macron and the rest of the EU27 as the fate of Brexit hangs in the balance. At the same time, the cross party talks continue with no sign of the all important 'compromise' and the 1922 committee are waiting in the wings to replace Theresa May. So just a typical week in Brexit... For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

This week we'll be discussing Poland as part of our new series looking at how some of the EU27 states view Brexit: which factors influence their position, whether their interests might affect talks on the future trading relationship between Britain and the bloc – and maybe help, or hinder, UK efforts to achieve a more favourable, even a bespoke, deal
