Dr. Brian Toone, assistant professor of computer science at Samford University joins us on the show this week. You may be wondering what a professor in computer science is doing on an outdoor podcast? Well, Brian is not only a brilliant professor, he is also an avid cyclist. And when I say avid, he's at a different level than 99% of cyclists in America. Recently, Brian competed in the 2023 Paris-Brest-Paris cycling event, a 761-mile ride through France where he finished the endurance race in under 59 hours. We're going to get into that more during this conversation, as well as his performance in the Race Across America where he was the first American to finish that year and third overall. We also talk about one thanksgiving where he decided to ride his bike from Alabama to Michigan to be with his family for the holiday. You'll enjoy this episode with Brian Toone even if you're not a cyclist. We are so excited to share this conversation and the incredible things Dr. Toone is doing with the research he's conducting as he rides. This episode is with my friend Brian Toone, best described as a bicycle racer, professor, adventurist, and ultra-endurance cycling competitor; not to mention father and husband! Brian and I personally go back into the early 2000s, but we take his story from the 80s all the way up to today. He is a professor at Samford University by way of Clemson and UC-Davis, and was an OG of collegiate cycling in the early 90s. After a highly successful racing career at the Pro/1 level, Brian turned his attention to ultra racing and riding, which is likely where you have heard of him the most. He finished 7th in RAAM in 2015, and then capitalized on those harsh lessons to finish 3rd in 2017. Along the way he has encountered quite a bit of adversity, having been hit by a motor vehicle several times, but each time his love for the bicycle continues even stronger. Brian shares many ideas, experiences, and his research along his journey. This is a long episode, but well worth absorbing and digesting because Brian provides some amazing insight. Griz Greats: The Silver Anniversary of the 1995 National Champions
Randy Riley and fellow Butte, Montana native Brian Toone converged to make one of the biggest plays of Montana's 22-20 national title game victory over Marshall in December of 1995. The Butte safety proved to be the final margin of victory as the Grizzlies won their first Division I-AA national title.
Brian Toone was a junior on the 1995 National Championship team. He graduated from Butte High where the Bulldogs made a state championship run in his senior season. From there he became a standout on the Grizzly defense, perhaps most memorably combining with fellow Butte alum Randy Riley on a sack-safety of Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington in the National Championship. That play proved to be the final margin of victory in Montana's 22-20 defeat of the Thundering Herd. Most recently, Toone has now taken over the family business - making jewelry - he owns Jewelry Design Center in Spokane Washington.
