Prominent Democrat Pete Buttigieg will stump for a Montana ballot initiative in Butte next month. The proposal aims to rein in corporate campaign spending. Buttigieg, a former presidential candidate, will hold a town hall in support of the "Montana Plan" on May 17. He says it could become a blueprint for other states.

This week on the Ante Up Poker Podcast, we're coming to you straight from the felt at Gila River Lone Butte, and the energy is unreal. Elle and I are joined at the table by Brownie, a Lone Butte regular, as we soak in what has been an incredible trip filled with great tournaments, even better people, and a poker room that's been buzzing from start to finish. We share some of our favorite moments from the stop, talk about what's made this series so special, and why this place has quickly become a favorite for the players. We also hit the latest headlines in the poker world and hand out a round of shoutouts to members of the A-Team who've been making waves. In Call the Floor, Elliott breaks down a chaotic situation where a drunk player's chip stack collapses into the pot, forcing the floor to step in and reconstruct the action. It's messy, it's confusing, and it's exactly why procedures matter. Then it's time for Hand of the Week as Patrick and I dive into a tricky spot holding AQ suited—one of those hands that looks pretty but can get you into trouble fast. I wrap things up with Joe's One Outer, where I talk about something deeper than strategy—the danger of tying your identity to your poker results, and why separating who you are from how you're running might be the most important move you ever make. This is Part Two of our conversation.Montana's frontier history left behind more than old buildings and fading legends—some believe it left behind spirits that never moved on.For the team at Chilling Paranormal, exploring haunted locations isn't just about searching for evidence. It's also about protecting the history tied to those places. Led by Addison Gerstein, the Montana-based group hosts paranormal investigations that give people the opportunity to experience historic sites while helping support their preservation.Today, Addison takes us inside two of Montana's most infamous locations: the Old Montana State Prison and the Dumas Brothel. The prison operated from 1871 to 1979, witnessing riots, brutal conditions, and decades of inmate violence. Today, investigators report shadow figures, unexplained footsteps, and chilling EVP recordings echoing through the empty cell blocks. We also explore the Dumas Brothel, the longest continuously operating brothel in the United States. Built during Butte's mining boom and partially constructed underground, investigators say the building still carries a powerful energy tied to its complicated past.Sometimes history leaves behind more than stories. For more information, go to their website, chillingparanormal.com, find them on Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram.#TheGraveTalks #ParanormalPodcast #HauntedPrison #OldMontanaStatePrison #DumasBrothel #MontanaGhosts #HauntedHistory #GhostInvestigation #ChillingParanormal #ParanormalInvestigation #HauntedAmerica #ButteMontanaLove real ghost stories? 2. David K. Randall, *The Monster's Bones: The Discovery of T-Rex and How It Shook Our World*. In 1902, Barnum Brown tracked a lead from a photograph of a triceratops skull to Jordan, Montana. Though the specific skull was disappointing, Brown recognized the potential of the remote Hell Creek region. Utilizing his unique skill for reading rock colors, he identified Sheba Mountain as a likely site for fossilization. He used dynamite to reveal a carnivorous dinosaur that had never been described before: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Brown's discovery was a "jackpot" for the American Museum, even though the process of transporting and mounting the heavy specimen would take years to complete. (2)Butte, MT

Severe winter weather arrives in Montana this week leading to the potential for blizzards. Officials are asking people to be wary of travel plans starting Thursday. Schools in the Flathead Valley and Butte will be closed Thursday in preparation for the storm.
In this episode, we delve into the remarkable experiences of Linda from northeastern Kansas, whose encounters span decades and stretch across the mountains of Montana, the forests of southeastern Oklahoma, the high country of Colorado, and the rolling Flint Hills of Kansas. Her journey began in childhood after a frightening mountain incident near Butte, Montana and a moment that changed how she viewed the famous Patterson-Gimlin film.Linda shares her 1977 experience near Broken Bow, Oklahoma, where an overwhelming warning forced her to leave an isolated trail. Years later in Bailey, Colorado, she and her husband were awakened at 4:00 AM by a powerful vocalization rising from below their mountainside home. Near Pine Junction, she describes a whistle that answered her own from the trees.Back in Kansas, the activity continued—wood knocks near a camper, unexplained footprints in winter ground, a towering shadow passing a window, and a long, distant Ohio howl echoing across the Flint Hills followed by chilling responses. While camping near a quiet lake, she encountered massive tree breaks and an X-shaped stick structure placed directly in front of her vehicle.Linda also opens up about deeply personal experiences that shaped her understanding of these beings, touching on moments that felt protective, purposeful, and transformative. This conversation moves through multiple states, landscapes, and seasons, weaving together firsthand encounters and reflections that build into something far bigger than a single sighting. Join us as we explore Linda's lifelong journey and the enduring mystery of Sasquatch in the American heartland and beyond.
In this episode, we delve into the extraordinary experiences of Mark from southwest Oregon, whose life was permanently changed by a late-night encounter on a snowy mountain road near Grants Pass. What first appeared to be a small tree standing along a ridge revealed itself to be something towering, powerful, and far too close for comfort. That moment in the late 1980s set the course for decades of reflection, research, and unexpected encounters across some of the most active wilderness corridors in the Pacific Northwest.Living near the Applegate and Rogue River regions, Mark shares how reports quietly surfaced over the years from hunters, firefighters, law enforcement, and everyday outdoorsmen who trusted him enough to speak. He recounts a recent investigation near Butte Falls involving thermal imaging, night vision, and his 165-pound wolf hybrid, where the forest seemed to move with intention and the night carried sounds that still defy explanation. From repeated 3AM vocalizations near Wolf Creek and Glendale, to unsettling activity in the Diamond Lake region and Highway 138 corridor, Mark paints a vivid picture of southern Oregon as a place where something continues to operate just beyond the edges of certainty. He also reflects on the stranger elements reported by credible witnesses—anomalous lights, missing time, and phenomena that challenge simple classifications.Mark's grounded, thoughtful perspective brings weight to every detail. His story spans decades, terrain, and testimony, offering a rare look into ongoing activity in one of the most compelling regions for Sasquatch reports in the country.Join us as we explore Mark's experiences and the enduring mystery unfolding in the forests of southwest Oregon.
In the first hour of Nuanez Now, Colter Nuanez is joined by Montana Tech women's basketball head coach Jeff Graham along with Butte native Brooke Badovinac. Badovinac scored 21 points and knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer that lifted the Orediggers past Dakota State, securing Montana Tech's first Frontier Conference title since 1983. Graham and Badovinac break down the historic win, the key moments that defined the game, and what the championship means for the program and the Butte community.Later, Geoff Safford delivers this week's Class C Spotlight with an interview featuring Manhattan Christian boys head coach Layne Glaus. Glaus discusses his team's impressive 20–4 season and their eighth straight divisional title, while sharing insight into the culture and consistency that has kept the Eagles among the top programs in Class C year after year.To wrap up the hour, Colter runs through the latest prep scoreboard, highlighting results from high school basketball games across the state as teams battle for postseason positioning.

Former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul returns to Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson to discuss his new book, Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder. McFaul explains why Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and today's autocratic leaders fundamentally do not think like we do—and why that misunderstanding has shaped some of America's most consequential foreign-policy mistakes. Drawing on decades of scholarship and firsthand experience inside the Kremlin, McFaul traces Russia's post–Cold War slide back into autocracy; challenges the claim that NATO expansion caused the rupture with Moscow; and argues that the true threat to authoritarian regimes is democratic example rather than Western military power. He examines the war in Ukraine, its implications for Taiwan, the limits of transactional diplomacy with ideologues like Putin, and the enduring lessons of Cold War statecraft. He also reflects on his unlikely journey from Butte, Montana, to Spaso House —the Moscow home of the U.S. ambassador to Russia— and why he remains convinced that democracy, however fragile, is still the West's greatest strategic advantage. We covered this historic and famous brothel back on Ep. 120 in 2016. This is one of the few haunted locations we have found in Montana and it is located in Butte. The town has its roots in mining and was known as the "Richest Hill on Earth." Gold, silver and copper were all mined here. As was the case with so many mining towns, a successful red light district grew within the town. One of the most successful and high-class brothels in town was the Dumas Brothel. Rich clientele could have their fantasies met here, but there was also pleasure for the working class in the basement, which ran like a sex mill. The brothel passed through many hands and has the reputation of being the longest running brothel in the country. And it seems that clients and the girls are still hanging out here in the afterlife. Several entities are thought to haunt this building. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Dumas Brothel! The Coffin Butte Landfill, located about 10 miles north of Corvallis, takes in trash from around two dozen Oregon counties and accepts more than a million tons of waste every year. But its shelf life is expiring, and Republic Services, the company that owns and operates the landfill, is trying to expand it. Now, it’s one step closer. Last month, Republic won Benton County’s approval for a permit that greenlights the expansion, so long as Republic complies with certain criteria to mitigate the dump’s environmental impact. Opponents are trying to stall the expansion at the Land Use Board of Appeals before any shovels hit the ground, but it’s unclear whether the expansion will happen safely, or at all. Mason Leavitt is a geographic information systems analyst and programs manager at Beyond Toxics. He joins us to revisit the expansion’s continuing saga, what we know about the site’s environmental impact and what alternatives there might be.
Interview with Gordon Neal, President, Domestic Metals Recording date: 9th December 2025Domestic Metals has acquired a promising Montana copper porphyry project from Rio Tinto through an earn-in agreement that highlights the property's significant potential. The company can earn 60% ownership by spending $3.15 million USD on exploration work, with Rio Tinto retaining 40% plus an unusual 20% clawback provision—a protective measure that underscores the major miner's conviction in the project's long-term value. The Smart Creek-Sunrise property occupies compelling geological ground, located 50 kilometers northwest of the historic Butte mine, which has produced 22 billion pounds of copper over a century. The project sits within the same Helena formation geology, with company geologists noting that rocks match Butte's characteristics in age and composition. Rio Tinto drilled 26 of 40 total holes on the property, with results improving progressively from southeast to northwest. The best intercept to date shows 109 meters at 0.75% copper, including 80 meters at 0.97% copper, suggesting drilling was advancing toward rather than away from the porphyry center.President Gordon Neal brings proven credentials, having built MAG Silver from $50 million to $2.5 billion market capitalization and New Pacific Metals from $100 million to $1.5 billion. His track record in capital markets and project development provides credibility to the company's exploration strategy. The company recently raised $4 million to fund comprehensive IP and magnetotelluric geophysical surveys in January-February 2026, followed by 3,000+ meters of drilling starting February-March. Assay results are expected April-May 2026. A critical advantage is Montana's streamlined permitting environment, with drill permits obtained in four months versus 5-7 years in Arizona. The Forest Service recently extended 36 expired drill permits using existing paperwork—unprecedented flexibility that enables rapid, capital-efficient advancement of what could become a significant domestic copper discovery.Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Headframe Spirits (Butte, MT) WF076 Today, a bit of a hybrid episode. As part of the Great 48 Tour, I decided to revisit a distillery in the mining town of Butte, Montana. It's a distillery that tells the story of Butte America and the town's mining legacy through its spirit names. So, not only was I fascinated by it's storytelling, I was also intrigued by the fact I've seen stills around the country with Headframe's logo. So, I wanted to dive a little deeper with founder John McKee, who not only has a passion for making a unique (for America) style still, but also is a great ambassador for the town of Butte. A good bit of history, some talk about whiskey, and a wee bit of a technical deep dive into what makes his stills different from the pot stills and column stills we see throughout the industry. Enjoy this interview/flight with an additional 5 minutes of content as a member of the Whiskey Lore Speakeasy: patreon.com/whiskeylore Cheers and slainte mhath, Drew
Jeff Smith checks in with three boots-on-the-ground voices to break down how California's opener really went—and what to expect as November weather finally shows up. Guests include Garrett Spann (Manager, Yolo Wildlife Area), Derek Seweck (Wildlife Habitat Manager, Upper Butte Basin), and Orlando Rocha (Environmental Scientist, Grizzly Island Wildlife Area). What you'll hearOpener by the numbers — solid starts in spots, soft elsewhere; teal and wigeon led many straps while mallards were patchy. Why it felt “quiet” — late rice harvest, limited flood-up in key zones, and a streak of 80°+ bluebird days that scattered birds.Flood-up status & timing — which units are online now, what's filling next, and how that will shift day-to-day bird use.Local patterns — Yolo's steady trickle of new water holding birds, Upper Butte's wood-duck swing not materializing (yet), and Grizzly Island's east vs. west marsh differences.Youth & access intel — how the Howard Slough youth area and nearby rice options are structured (free roam vs. blinds), plus what to expect on busy Saturdays.Pintail reality check — 3-bird limit is on the books, but most hunters haven't hit it… yet; watch for classic December–January rice flights.Hunt smarter in the lull — read wind and pressure, pivot units as new water comes up, and be ready when the first real fronts push fresh birds. If you're lining up your next reservation or boat-in plan, this roundtable gives you a clear read on conditions, timing, and the moves that'll matter when the weather finally flips.

Nicholas Triolo is a writer, endurance athlete, and educator whose life and work sit at the crossroads of ecology, activism, and storytelling. For years, he's been exploring what happens when we stop charging toward the summit and start paying attention to the circuitous paths that wind around it. His new book, "The Way Around: A Field Guide to Going Nowhere," is the culmination of that exploration — a lyrical, wide-ranging meditation on movement, place, and the art of staying present. In the book, Nick traces a series of pilgrimages: circling a sacred mountain in Tibet, exploring a culturally significant northern California hiking tradition, and walking the rim of one of Montana's most infamous superfund sites. Each journey reveals something deeper — about endurance and restraint, about intimacy with landscapes and with ourselves, and about the courage to face environmental and cultural shadows without turning away. The book weaves together memoir, travel writing, and ecological inquiry, and in doing so, it asks us to reconsider how we measure meaning: not by miles logged or summits bagged, but by the depth of our attention and the generosity of our presence. In this conversation, Nick and I dig into the ideas behind the book — the practice of circumambulation, the pitfalls of “summit fever,” and the possibility of finding beauty even in places scarred by extraction. We also talk about the creative process: how to find your authentic voice in a world full of (good and bad) influences, how to write with both intimacy and respect, and how stories can become tools for resilience and re-enchantment. If you've ever sensed that the most interesting part of a long run, a wilderness trip, or a creative endeavor is what happens beneath the surface, this is a conversation for you. Nick has a gift for showing us how going “nowhere” can sometimes bring us closer to where we most need to be. Check out the episode notes for links to everything. Ryan Zinke is a fifth generation Montanan who serves as Representative for Montana's First Congressional District covering 16 counties in western Montana including the cities of Bozeman, Butte, Missoula, Kalispell. First elected to Congress in 2014, and serving as U.S. Secretary of the Interior between noncontiguous terms, Zinke has built a track record of accomplishments in energy, conservation, tribal and military issues. Now in his third term, Zinke is a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, focusing his legislative agenda on restoring accountability to federal spending, restoring American energy dominance, and bolstering national security at our borders and beyond. Ryan began public service in 1985 when he joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from Officer Candidate School. He was recruited to join the U.S. Navy SEALs where he went on dozens of deployments targeting terrorist cells in Asia, war criminals in Bosnia, and combatting the rise of radical Islamic terrorists in the middle east. During his military career he held a number of leadership positions including as Ground Forces and Task Force commander at SEAL Teams SIX oversaw the U.S. Navy SEAL BUD/S training after 9/11, and was Deputy/Acting Commander of Joint Special Forces during the Iraq war. In 2006 he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Commander Zinke retired from active duty in 2008 after serving for 23 years. Following his military service, Ryan was elected to the Montana State Senate and was twice elected as Montana's sole member of the U.S. House of Representatives. During his first two terms as Congressman, Zinke served on the House Armed Services Committee and Natural Resources Committee. As a leading member of the Natural Resources Committee, Ryan challenged the Obama Administration on their policies that locked Montanans out of public lands and introduced legislation to strengthen public access and conservation. In December 2016, Congressman Zinke was nominated to be the United States Secretary of the Interior by President Donald J. Trump and later confirmed by a bipartisan vote in the Senate.
