Juni 2026 wird das legendäre Race Across America (RAAM) gestartet: 4800 km von Westen (Oceanside, Kal.) nach Osten (Atlantic City, New Jersey) mit über 50 000 Höhenmetern - NONSTOP. Der Adliswiler Michel Bucheli begibt sich auf die abenteuerliche Reise, die viel mehr als nur Fitness verlangt. Warum er als Triathlet – zumindest temporär – zum Ultra Cycling gewechselt ist, was ihn daran fasziniert, lange Strecken zu bewältigen, erzählt Michel Bucheli im Gespräch vor seiner Abreise in die USA zum RAAM. Der Projektleiter im Bereich Telekommunikation kann gut mit sich allein sein, mag das Monotone, wie er sagt, «und ich habe einen eisernen Willen». Neben seiner mentalen Stärke und der Fähigkeit mit sehr wenig Schlaf auszukommen, hat sein Betreuer-Team mit acht Leuten vor Ort einen hohen Stellenwert und grosse Verantwortung. «Wir kommen als Team ins Ziel», so Bucheli, «nicht nur ich allein».  KURT MÜLLER: «ER HAT ALLE RESSOURCEN» Wichtiger Anker ist sein Trainer Kurt Müller, der fest an ihn glaubt. Europa heeft heel veel moeite met de manier waarop Amerika onder leiding van Trump met ons continent omgaat. Maar het verbreken van de banden met elkaar is juist niet wat we moeten doen, vindt Geoffrey van Leeuwen, stafchef van Mark Rutte bij de NAVO. Volgens hem heeft Europa geen keus. 'De kwetsbaarheid van Europa op het gebied van defensie is zo enorm.' Hij is te gast in BNR De Wereld bij Bernard Hammelburg en Geert Jan Hahn. Een confrontatie met Rusland ziet hij op dit moment somber in zonder de Amerikanen. 'Ik zie niet in hoe we daar nu goed uitkomen.' De F-35 is volgens hem het beste toestel ter wereld. Op de vraag of we het ook met een iets minder Europees toestel kunnen antwoordt hij dat dat niet wenselijk is. Bovendien heeft de NAVO zonder Amerika grote gevolgen voor ons defensiebudget. 'Dan moeten we wel acht tot negen procent aan defensie besteden.' Toch is Oekraïne een toonbeeld van het feit dat je wel degelijk een goede defensie-industrie kan opbouwen. Maar ook daarvoor wijst Van Leeuwen naar de Amerikanen. 'Daar hebben ze echt wel hulp in gehad. Daarnaast levert Amerika nog verreweg de meeste intelligence aan Oekraïne.' Europa-verslaggever Geert confronteert hem met een uitspraak van Macron dat Frankrijk nu tweederde van de intel levert. 'Dat is een mooie gedachte', aldus Van Leeuwen. Voor het eerst in lange tijd heeft het meer gebied verloren dan gewonnen in Oekraïne. Dat concludeert het toonaangevende Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Ook in het binnenland gaat het slecht. De economie bevindt zich in een recessie en het rekruteren van soldaten gaat steeds moeizamer omdat de arbeidsmarkt stagneert als gevolg van de oorlogseconomie. Over de gevolgen daarvan is te gast Hubert Smeets, medeoprichter van Raam op Rusland, columnist voor NRC en voormalig correspondent in het land. Inleiding - Deel IEen theoretische fundering zoals het tekstboek die verschaft, is als kader noodzakelijk om de oefeningen in dit werkboek zinvol te maken. Maar pas het doen van de oefeningen maakt het doel van de cursus mogelijk. Een ongetrainde denkgeest kan niets tot stand brengen. Het is het doel van dit werkboek je denkgeest te trainen om te denken volgens de richting die het tekstboek aangeeft.De oefeningen zijn heel eenvoudig. Ze vragen niet veel tijd en het maakt niet uit waar je ze doet. Ze behoeven geen voorbereiding. De trainingsperiode beslaat één jaar. De oefeningen zijn genummerd van 1 tot 365. Doe niet meer dan één stel oefeningen per dag.Het werkboek is onderverdeeld in twee hoofdafdelingen: het eerste houdt zich bezig met het ongedaan maken van de manier waarop jij nu ziet, en het tweede met het verwerven van ware waarneming. Met uitzondering van de herhalingsperioden zijn de dagelijkse oefeningen elk rond één centraal idee opgebouwd, dat eerst wordt omschreven. Dit wordt gevolgd door de beschrijving van de specifieke richtlijnen volgens welke het idee van de dag moet worden uitgevoerd.Het doel van het werkboek is je denkgeest systematisch te trainen in een andere waarneming van alles en iedereen in deze wereld. De oefeningen zijn ontworpen om je te helpen de lessen te veralgemenen, zodat je gaat begrijpen dat ze elk evenzeer toepasbaar zijn op je waarneming van alles en iedereen.De overdracht van training verloopt bij ware waarneming niet op dezelfde wijze als de overdracht van de training in de wereld. Als ware waarneming is verworven met betrekking tot enige persoon, situatie of gebeurtenis, dan staat vast dat ze totaal op alles en iedereen overgaat. Anderzijds maakt één uitzondering, die buiten ware waarneming wordt gehouden, haar verwezenlijking waar dan ook onmogelijk.De enige algemene regels, die dan ook steeds in acht dienen te worden genomen, zijn: ten eerste, dat de oefeningen zeer specifiek moeten worden uitgevoerd, zoals zal worden aangegeven. Dit zal jou helpen om de betreffende ideeën te veralgemenen naar elke situatie waarin je je bevindt en naar alles en iedereen daarbij betrokken. Ten tweede, zorg ervoor dat jij niet voor jezelf beslist dat er sommige mensen, omstandigheden of zaken bestaan waarop de ideeën niet toepasbaar zijn. Dit zal de overdracht van de training in de weg staan. Het is een wezenlijke eigenschap van ware waarneming dat ze zonder grenzen is. Ze is het tegendeel van de manier waarop jij nu ziet.Het hoofddoel van alle oefeningen is het vergroten van je vermogen de ideeën die je zult oefenen zo uit te breiden dat ze alles omvatten. Dit zal van jouw kant geen inspanning vergen. De oefeningen zelf voldoen aan de voorwaarden die noodzakelijk zijn voor deze vorm van overdracht.Sommige ideeën die het werkboek presenteert zul je moeilijk kunnen geloven, en andere kunnen nogal onthutsend lijken. Dit doet er niet toe. Jou wordt slechts gevraagd de ideeën toe te passen zoals je opgedragen wordt. Er wordt je helemaal niet gevraagd ze te beoordelen. Er wordt je alleen gevraagd ze te gebruiken. Juist het gebruik ervan zal ze betekenis voor je laten krijgen en je tonen dat ze waar zijn.Onthoud alleen dit: je hoeft de ideeën niet te geloven, je hoeft ze niet te aanvaarden, laat staan toe te juichen. Tegen een aantal ervan zul je je misschien heftig verzetten. Dit alles is niet van belang en zal hun uitwerking niet verminderen. Maar sta jezelf niet toe uitzonderingen te maken in de toepassing van de ideeën die het werkboek bevat, en – wat je reacties op de ideeën ook mogen zijn – gebruik ze. Meer wordt er niet gevraagd.LES 3Ik begrijp niets wat ik in deze kamer [in deze straat, uit dit raam, op deze plek] zie.Pas dit idee op dezelfde manier toe als de twee voorgaande, zonder enig onderscheid te maken. Elk voorwerp dat je ziet, is geschikt om het idee op toe te passen. Zorg ervoor dat je je niet gaat afvragen of iets wel geschikt is voor de toepassing van het idee. Dit zijn geen oefeningen in oordelen. Alles is geschikt, als je het ziet. Sommige dingen die je ziet, kunnen een emotioneel geladen betekenis voor je hebben. Probeer zulke gevoelens opzij te zetten en behandel die dingen gewoon net zoals je al het andere zou behandelen.De bedoeling van deze oefeningen is je te helpen jouw denkgeest te bevrijden van alle vroegere associaties, de dingen precies zo te zien zoals ze zich nu aan jou voordoen en te beseffen hoe weinig jij er werkelijk van begrijpt. Het is daarom noodzakelijk dat je bij de keuze van de dingen waarop het idee van vandaag toegepast gaat worden, je denkgeest volkomen open houdt en niet door oordelen laat hinderen. Ele é filho do casal Cristina de Carvalho e José Caputo, portanto, nasceu em meio ao esporte, às competições e à natureza. Sua base esportiva foi formada no Acampamento de Aventura, criado pela mãe, que se tornou uma lenda do triathlon brasileiro e referência nas corridas de aventura e de montanha nos anos 1990 e 2000. Foi ali, em meio à natureza, entre serras, trilhas e rios, que ele cresceu cercado de movimento, aprendendo desde muito jovem o valor do esporte e da vida ao ar livre. Quando criança, praticou natação, judô, jiu-jítsu e surfe. Sonhava ser atleta profissional, talvez um skatista, talvez um mountain biker. Aos 12 anos, participou da sua primeira competição de mountain bike e foi vice-campeão sub-18. Aos 16, venceu sua primeira prova de triathlon, o XTerra em Ilhabela, e depois o XTerra Brasil. Aos poucos, a vontade de explorar seus limites foi ganhando força e, inspirado pelas histórias que sempre ouviu sobre a mãe, passou a se dedicar com mais seriedade aos treinos. Em 2023, repetiu a vitória no XTerra Ilhabela e venceu a Epic Race, competição de mountain bike. No ano seguinte, 2024, foi vice-campeão do XTerra em Quebec (Canadá) e do XTerra Brasil, campeão do Kailash Multisport Festival e do duathlon do Rocky Mountain Games, além de ter participado do El Cruce de Los Andes ao lado do pai. Estou falando do instrutor de mountain bike, socorrista de áreas remotas, monitor no Acampamento de Aventura, educador físico em formação e multiatleta que, neste ano, venceu a Kailash Trail Run em Campos do Jordão e o Rocky Mountain Games em Atibaia, o paulistano Luigi Carvalho Caputo. Ao lado dele, uma verdadeira lenda do triathlon mundial. Um atleta que, aos 10 anos, participou de sua primeira corrida de 10 quilômetros; três anos depois, já completava meias maratonas e, aos 15, correu duas maratonas. Aos 16, leu sobre a participação de três brasileiros no Ironman do Havaí e ficou fascinado com a prova. Começou a treinar e participou das duas primeiras provas de triathlon no Brasil, em 1983. No ano seguinte, passou alguns meses se preparando nos Estados Unidos e chegou a Kona, para disputar o Ironman de 1984 como o atleta mais jovem. Aquela experiência foi transformadora e, a partir dali, o triathlon se tornaria seu estilo de vida. O Havaí seria o cenário de suas maiores conquistas. Das mais de 50 provas de Ironman das quais participou, 12 foram no Mundial de Kona. Em 1993, registrou o então recorde brasileiro do Ironman do Havaí, com o tempo de 8h49min15s. Uma década depois, venceu pela primeira vez o Ultraman do Havaí — feito que repetiria outras cinco vezes. Conosco aqui, pela segunda vez, o triatleta pioneiro que é hexa campeão mundial de Ultraman, recordista do RAAM na categoria duplas em 2000, o primeiro brasileiro a vencer a ultramaratona El Cruce de Los Andes ao lado de Cristina de Carvalho, idealizador e criador do UB515, educador físico, diretor técnico do Núcleo Aventura, mentor de uma infinidade de atletas e símbolo maior da resiliência humana, o cara mais simpático e querido do triathlon brasileiro, o curitibano Alexandre de Carvalho Ribeiro. Desde a infância, o esporte sempre esteve presente. No voleibol, chegou a disputar campeonatos paulistas nas categorias de base até os 17 anos, experiências competitivas que o colocaram em contato com os valores do esporte. Pouco depois, escolheu o caminho da Educação Física, profissão que abraçou de maneira integral. Tornou-se personal trainer em 1997, professor de ciclismo indoor em 1999 e, em 2004, fundou em Uberlândia a Academia Personal & Cia. O contato com o ciclismo de estrada veio apenas em 2011 e, no ano seguinte, sua primeira competição já foi o Race Across America, em uma equipe de 8 ciclistas. A experiência despertou nele a curiosidade e o fascínio pelas provas de ultradistância. Ao retornar ao Brasil, estava decidido a se dedicar à essa disciplina, iniciando uma trajetória de estudos, treinos e busca pela evolução. Nesse caminho conheceu Cláudio Clarindo, o maior expoente brasileiro da modalidade, que se tornou um mentor e inspiração. Desde então foram dezenas de competições, vitórias expressivas e muitos desafios. Entre seus principais resultados estão dois títulos em provas de 24 horas nos Estados Unidos, dois campeonatos mundiais por faixa etária no World Time Trial Championships, além do campeonato americano de 24h, em 2018. Participou de quatro edições do Race Across The West, conquistando o segundo lugar em duas ocasiões e vencendo em 2023 com o recorde do percurso. Em 2024, venceu outra prova emblemática da ultradistância, a Silver State 508. Este ano, finalmente debutou na prova dos seus sonhos, o RAAM, onde pedalou os 4.937 km em 11 dias, 8 horas e 55 minutos.
