Describe the company – the elevator pitch . 1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses, individuals, and nonprofits tackling the planet's most pressing environmental challenges and leveraging the power of philanthropy to drive strategic impact. The core of our model is business membership, in which businesses commit 1% of annual revenues to our vetted environmental partners. Business Showcase : 1% for the Planet How are you different? We are different in that we represent a collective global solution model activated through custom cross-sector partnerships. Moreover, we implement an annual certification of these giving partnerships, so our model delivers credibility for all stakeholders, including consumers looking for brands they can trust. (Look for our logo to support brands that give back!) Why will you do well? We create a way in which real scalable impact is delivered such that our members can access the benefits of brand credibility through our logo coupled with brand differentiation through custom-giving partnerships. These features add up to real business value in a customer marketplace where the data shows that: 85% of consumers trust independent, third-party certification organizations to verify product claims; 93% of Gen Zers say if a company makes a commitment, it should have the appropriate programs and policies in place to back up that commitment; and 85% of purpose-driven companies showed positive growth; in comparison, 42% of non-purpose-led companies showed a drop in revenue in the same annual study. 1% for the Planet membership can also boost employee engagement and retention. 1% for the Planet Business Member, Union wine reported in a recent HR company-wide survey over 90% of their employees felt it was important for their company to support environmental non-profits. Where are you based? Our Global headquarters is located in Burlington, Vermont, USA. We operate as a remote/hybrid organization, with about half of our staff located in Vermont and working out of our headquarters office several days a week while the other half work in remote locations around the United States. We have a licensed chapter based in and serving membership in France, and in the coming years, we will be adding on-the-ground staff in select international locations, reporting to Global Headquarters. When was the company launched? 1% for the Planet was launched in 2002. Our founders are Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. We were founded to build a movement of companies for whom giving back is not simple year-end philanthropy but rather core to their strategic purpose and operations. We have steadily built this growing community, with 5,500 business members who have donated close to $450M USD over the lifetime of 1% for the Planet. What have been your biggest wins to date? Our biggest wins include the following: We have accelerated the growth of our impact with each passing year, growing to annual certified giving of $65M in 2022. We have launched an innovation in environmental philanthropy, the Planet Impact Fund, to accelerate our impact. Who are you trying to attract to your product? We are primarily focused on attracting businesses to our membership model. Additionally, we seek to engage individuals in our community through donations to support our work and through donations to the Planet Impact Fund. Overall, we seek to attract and deliver value to all stakeholders in our community: business members, individuals as donors and also as consumers of our member brands, and the environmental partners who play the most critical role in implementing impact on the ground. What tips would you give to others looking to build their business? Get clear on your particular strategy and purpose, stay focused on that, and then build in adaptability to respond to an external environment that will consistently throw curveballs. Pay attention to culture and change management – organizati...

In this edition of the Business Showcase we catch up with the Marsbase team to learn more about their innovative product. Describe the company – the elevator pitch . Marsbase is the first decentralized secondary market, a defi OTC desk. We've built this as an infrastructure project, we believe that we've created a new alternative source of liquidity by concentrating liquidity of large orders in one place and becoming thE platform for OTC in crypto. Our platform works through bid auction deals and discount model orders – this type of functionality perfectly covers our niche. Additionally, we are moving towards becoming the first compliant marketplace of unvested tokens and equity. Marsbase the first decentralised secondary market How are you different? We are the first DeFi secondary market for OTC deals and vested assets. Why will you do well? We have created an all-in-one tool for structuring the fragmented OTC market. Where are you based? In this week's Business Showcase we focus on WEIcrypto Describe the company – WEIcrypto the elevator pitch? WEIcrypto – is an ecosystem of products created on the basis of blockchain technology, aimed at technological changes of world's financial system. Meet our products: WEI is cryptocurrency has absorbed all the advantages of cash, from the speed of making a payment to the anonymity of the payer. WEI transaction takes no more than 1 second. WEI mining methods allow you to reduce the load on the environment WEIpay – Payment system for sending and receiving WEI. Sending WEI by phone number or by attaching the device to an NFC tag as in the usual online banking applications. Free clearing service for organizations WEIback – algorithm for popularizing WEI as a means of payment. User who accepted the WEI payment and the user who paid for the WII goods receive the same fixed remuneration for their contribution to the development of blockchain payments. WEIpartner – the system of loans for the development and stimulation of business and turnover of cryptocurrency WEI. The decision to approve the loan is made by voting of the blockchain nodes. To repay the loan, you just need to add WEI as one of the payment forms We came up with WEIpartner, a new startup financing system based on the principles of #decentralization and risk-sharing, which allows us to bypass all the omissions of modern credit systems ?? Join the Ecosystem:#decentralized #blockchain WEIcrypto (@teamweicrypto) May 26, 2022 How are you different? Currently there are none of any known analogues of WEIcrypto in the blockchain industry, whereas some of our products are unique for financial market generally. WEI – the first in the world cryptocurrency that allows you to mine it simply by buying and selling goods and services. Yet WEI has all the advantages of cash: from speed of transaction to being anonymous as a customer if necessary. WEIpay represents a completely different level of using cryptowallets. Service has familiar functions as bank apps for smartphones or online-banking for PC. You don't need to figure out the way it works, it's pretty simple, intuitive and convenient, you just use cryptocurrency for everyday transactions. WEIpartner – the world's first service for providing decentralized loans for startups, based on the principle of «risk sharing». A loan in WEIpartner is provided through the voting of blockchain nodes on a specialized platform. The principle of “risk sharing” means that in case of a commercial failure of the project, the user doesn't need to return borrowed funds. The WEIcrypto ecosystem shares entrepreneurial risks. Why will you do well? There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, it is the project team and its experience, that we are very proud of. The WEIcrypto project has united excellent specialists from economics, IT, marketing and jurisprudence who sincerely want to make the world a better place. We don't seek to radically and quickly change the financial system, but we want to make the use of cryptocurrencies in the world system more mass and understandable for ordinary people. The second reason is more technical. The pre-public version of the entire WEIcrypto ecosystem is ready and has passed internal testing. And, of course, we keep in mind ecology and the conservation of natural resources, so we use the Proof-of-Service algorithm. Where are you based? Our organization – Non-commercial fund «WEI Foundation» is based in Georgia, the country which was one of the first to develop and implement government-supported, blockchain solutions. When was the company launched? Work on the project began in March 2021, during the period of active growth of the NFT and Metaverse market. WEIcrypto was prompted by the obvious understanding that the interest of the community has moved from payments to the new assets (NFT, Metaverse), although what blockchain technology was created for (decentralized payments) has not been achieved yet. We bel...

On this episode of the Post Podcast, Hays Chamber president and CEO Sarah Wasinger shares details of the ongoing Business Showcase. By JAMES BELL Hays Post The latest Business Showcase Challenge is currently underway in Hays offering area residents an opportunity to explore local businesses, while at the same time offering the chance to win prizes from participating locations as well as from the Chamber. "It just started last week Friday, so from October 29, to November 19," said Hays Chamber president and CEO Sarah Wasinger. While this is not a new event for the chamber, she said this showcase features two premier sponsors, giving more opportunities to win prizes in time for the holidays. "We are very excited because Adams Brown, and Sunflower Bank are actually our sponsors, our premier sponsors for the events that we get to we have to this time," Wasinger said. "So we figured with it being Christmas time, it would be nice to give away more money." With the two sponsors, she said the chamber will have additional Chamber Check prizes given out. "We'll be drawing for four $100 Chamber Check prizes, and then two $50 Chamber Check prizes on November 22." Anyone interested in participating can visit any of the locations, or the Chamber office, 2700 Vine, to pick up a card that lists the participating businesses and relevant information for the showcase. "This card has all the locations listed as well as the addresses for the participating businesses, and of course, their hours of operation," Wasinger said. "So we take the guesswork out for you, you know exactly where to go and when to go." She said many of the businesses will also be offering their own prize drawings or discounts. And while the chance to win prizes or save money is important, the aim of the program is to entice area residents to explore area businesses. "So why we love Business Showcase so much is like you said there may be a business that you're not familiar with, you wouldn't normally have the opportunity to go in there or wouldn't perhaps think of that depending on what you're in the market for, for purchasing yourself or for your family," Wasinger said. "So these businesses would love to have folks come in." With the selection of participating buisnesses, she said the time required to complete the showcase is minimal. "If you have some extra time, it'll literally take you probably no more than an hour and a half to go visit all these nine different locations," Wasinger said. "And within that time, you're going to get a lot of different promotions and offerings, a chance to win extra prizes when you go to their locations, as well as just a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping." And the participants also offer a diverse representation of operations in the area. "So ABC Seamless, I know they're going to be having some discounts on their items in store so they are located at 1507 East 27th Street," Wasinger said. "Diamond R Jewelry is another one of our businesses this go around and they are going to be offering 20 percent off jewelry repair services through January 1 with a presentation of (the) card." "Hays Med is one that I am very excited to go to because with COVID they of course have been limited on who and how they're letting people into the hospital. But their gift shop is back up and running. So the Hays Med volunteer corner gift shop, they have such a wonderful variety of different items in there." In conjunction with the Business Showcase, they also have an open house planned on Nov. 11 and 12. "So you can go in there and actually register for a gift card while you're doing the business showcase too," Wasinger said. "And Nex-Tech Wireless is another one. ... They're gonna have some special promotions on the Samsung S 21 and iPhone 13. And they're going to also have some in-store giveaways for participants. So they're located of course at 1101 East 43rd Street. After celebrating a special anniversary at Rohr's Carpet Cleaning recently, she said she is excited they participated in the showcase as well. "They're gonna have a lot of different sales on in-stock items and different promotions," Wasinger said. "Plus, they're doing a drawing for a mop kit that can be used to keep your house clean during the holidays. ... They're located at 722 East 7th Street." "And then Sunflower Bank, their North location. ... So you'll visit the North Branch at 4720 Ross Avenue and they're going to be actually doing a special drawing for different branded items, as well as doing different chamber check giveaways. I think they're doing a $25 giveaway, a $20 giveaway. And customers can also get $100 if they open up their first personal checking account and get rewarded with extra perks." Thirsty's Brew Pub and Grill is also featured, in both the showcase, as well as on the chamber's Hot Deals. "They are always great about having a Hot Deal every month," Wasinger said. "And I believe this month it includes a very tasty steak with some sides. So you'll have to go check out Hayschamber.com and hit the Hot Deals and you'll be able to see that special." Rounding out the businesses is Vyve Broadband. They're going to be doing an in-store drawing for branded products valued at $50," Wasinger said. "So they're of course located at 1007 West 27th Street and are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m." "But United Way of Ellis County is also going to be joining us this go around and this is a special one because the end of the year is really such an important time for them. So they'll be doing some different raffle tickets for purchase and for their dine-out day. So visit them at 205 East 27th Street Suite 111." Once participants receive the stamp at each location, they can then return the filled-out cards to the chamber office. "You'll have to make sure that you do that by November 19," Wasinger said. "And then, of course, on Monday, November 22, we're going to be doing that chamber check drawing on via Facebook Live." For more information visit the Hays Chamber website hayschamber.com.

Ahead of Black Friday, sustainable accessories and footwear brand Allbirds is flipping tradition and is calling for consumers to ‘Break tradition, not the planet’. Allbirds: Fridays For Future Instead of slashing prices, Allbirds will be raising them and doubling its commitment to sustainability. On 27th November, all prices across its entire collection will increase by £1 and be matched by £1 by the brand, with the additional proceeds going directly to Fridays For Future, the youth-led international climate movement founded by climate activist Greta Thunberg. This continuation on urging consumers to consider buying better follows the brand’s initiative for 2019, which saw all of its UK stores closed for Black Friday, instead opting to provide complimentary workshops for consumers providing education around their buying decisions and how these have a long-lasting impact. The core belief of the brand is to showcase how a business can be used as a force for good and contribute to positive change and this continued reversal of the famed retail holiday is an ongoing proof point as to how consumers and brands need to and can take responsibility for tomorrow’s future. As a certified B Corp, Allbirds believe that business can be a force for good, and balancing purpose with profit is the future of commerce. To successfully tackle climate change, we need to collectively reduce our carbon impact and protect the earth’s resources. With a little more consciousness around how we consume, we can all tread lighter on the planet. About Allbirds Allbirds is a New Zealand-American footwear company that uses a direct-to-consumer approach and is aimed at designing environment friendly footwear. Allbirds’ first shoe was the Wool Runner, which is made from New Zealand superfine marino wool. More about Irish Tech News and Business Showcase here. The eCAI (eCommerce Association of Ireland) projects eCommerce to equate to 30% of all retail by 2030 based on current trends and analysis. 10,000 websites have pivoted to eCommerce this year due to Covid restrictions with 9000 receiving the Government Trading Online Voucher in 2020. eCAI: ‘The grass is greener at home’ “60% of Irish online shopping goes abroad. Huge swathes of shoppers have moved online in recent months and if that trend continues it’s going to be disastrous for retail, our high streets, and our culture as we know it”, explains Niall Bodkin, CEO of the eCAI, “The grass is greener at home, you don’t have to buy abroad anymore, the choice, convenience, and unrivaled personal touch is right here in Ireland ”. To tackle this impending crisis, the eCAI has launched ThinkIrish, a campaign to highlight the benefits of buying from local websites and support retailers on their eCommerce journey. 300 Irish websites have already joined the campaign in its first 14 days and have been listed on the www.thinkirish.ie directory. Shoppers can browse hundreds of shops and find exclusive offers just in time for Christmas. Companies who register on the ThinkIrish directory will receive free eCAI membership, which gives them access to the eCAI peer-to-peer learning platform, training, free mentors, and impartial advice throughout their eCommerce journey. “ThinkIrish is not just a directory, and it’s not just for Christmas, it’s a 10-year strategic plan”, adds Bodkin, “We aren’t going to tell shoppers they’re bad for buying abroad. They enjoy it. ThinkIrish aims to win that business back by developing a consistent, more enjoyable shopping experience across all our members’ websites”. “Irish websites have so much more to offer,” says Ruth Brady, a qualified teacher from Cogsthebrainshop.ie, an educational toys shop, based in St Stephens Green Centre, Dublin, “In our business, we encourage customers to reach out for advice. We want to give the same service online as you get in-store. You tend to build up relationships, even on Instagram”. The eCAI hopes ThinkIrish will resonate with shoppers who are keen to support local businesses. Any business or service selling online can register for free on www.thinkirish.ie and list their website and offers on the ThinkIrish directory and display the ThinkIrish logo. A new biannual report from Host in Ireland, in association with Bitpower, features the essential economic role data centres are playing during the pandemic thanks to €117B in computer service exports in the first half of 2020. Recent research from ESRI shows these exports, of which data centres are the critical backbone infrastructure, account for 26% of all of Ireland’s export activity this year. While exports fell dramatically for the vast majority of Ireland’s economic sectors – transport, tourism, retail, etc. – computer services, pharmaceuticals, and medicinal products have had strong enough performances to buoy the Irish export economy as a whole. The importance of data centres in our day-to-day lives continues to be a key factor as global lockdowns sustain the rapid shift to an online world to learn, work, and entertain ourselves. While many industries have struggled, the effect of COVID-19 on development within the industry has been minimal. Host in Ireland report- Data centre clusters continuing to grow This is attributed to continued investment from global organisations, high rates of activity from third-party developers, and established data centre clusters continuing to grow. This activity is expected to account for €1.25 billion of investment in 2020. Additional key elements of the report include: The energy related carbon emission metric introduced last spring continues to show data centre carbon emissions remaining at 1.58% of Ireland’s total emissions. A new business sentiment rating shows 96% of data centre ecosystem companies are optimistic about business for the upcoming 12 months. There are 66 data centres now operational, planned, and under construction in Ireland. “As we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic, data centres and their workers have been essential to keeping Ireland online and the economy functioning. The sense of pride and purpose from the industry is rewarding, but validation of the significant economic impact data centres have had during this economic downturn is invaluable,” said Garry Connolly, president and founder of Host in Ireland. “Future export opportunities look to grow even further when we take into account green electricity as a more valuable export asset in the form of data.” About Host in Ireland Host in Ireland is an award-winning strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland as well as Irish companies that are designing, building, and operating data centres globally. The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Leo Varadkar T.D, opened a new scheme on behalf of the Irish Government to help small businesses prepare for Britain’s exit from the single market and customs union at the end of this year. Government intervention: Providing financial aid The new Microfinance Ireland (MFI) Brexit Business Loan, will provide up to €25,000 to businesses whose turnover already is or is likely to fall 15% or more or if the business has a short term cashflow need as a result of Brexit. Loans are available for between six months and three years. The Tánaiste said: “I know it’s been a really hard year, especially for our small, local businesses and imminent Brexit feels like another body blow on the way. This new loan is just one of the ways we are helping businesses to prepare. It will provide low-cost finance of up to €25,000 and business owners can apply through MFI. 77% of MFI’s lending is to businesses outside of Dublin, which is important as businesses all over Ireland will feel the negative effects of Brexit. “If you are a business owner and are wondering where to start, I’d recommend filling out our Brexit Readiness Checker first and having a look at what needs to be done in your business. Then please reach out and use the help that’s there.” Damien English, Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail on behalf of the government said: “January 1st is fast approaching for many Irish businesses whose trade will be negatively impacted on as a result of Brexit. The MFI Brexit Business Loan scheme is an assured financial product that will provide some certainty to those sole traders and limited companies with fewer than 10 employees in Ireland as they continue to work through their Brexit readiness plans.” Irish Government want businesses to be ready MFI CEO Garrett Stokes said: “Businesses need to urgently start planning for the consequences of Brexit. While the impact will be greatest on exporters, importers need to determine their supply chain and source of imports and plan for any delays or changes required. Many businesses will be negatively impacted by Brexit or suffer a short term cashflow impact. The Microfinance Ireland Brexit Loan is ideally suited for businesses with these needs. Three Irish NGOs that support small businesses, job seekers and skills training will receive a share of €500,000 funding from Google.org to help them respond to the repercussions of the pandemic. The funding from the philanthropic arm of Google is the second tranche of the €1 million grant funding announced in April. The funding was dedicated in two tranches, the first of which was provided to help NGOs and non-profits providing vital services to the most vulnerable in our communities during the initial Covid crisis, followed by a second tranche dedicated to economic recovery. This second tranche of grants will be shared among NGOs that focus on upskilling, mentoring and supporting job seekers to help them gain the skills, knowledge and qualifications they need for roles in the tech sector. The projects to be funded by each of the grantees are: Jobcare delivers virtual, 7-week training programmes to job seekers in Dublin. Its goal is to support 500 participants and to help with this, they’re building a new platform for participants to use which will help them engage with the course material, other participants, and the trainers. Ringsend Community Services Forum (RCSF) provides mentorship, job training, and train-the-trainer programmes to 50 community leaders in Ringsend and Pearse Street. This will provide an opportunity for each of the leaders to deliver training to their own target groups. In partnership with St. Andrew’s and The Anchorage Project key support in digital skills and employment opportunities will be provided to job seekers in the wider communities of Pearse street and Ringsend. INCO provides virtual job and skills training to young people (18-35) who have been economically impacted by COVID-19, primarily in Cork, Galway, and Waterford (achieved through working with local partners). INCO focuses on developing tech skills amongst this group with a view to young people gaining vital experience that will help them get full-time roles in the tech sector. Nick Leeder, Head of Google in Ireland said, “When we announced this funding back in April, we wanted to ensure that the second tranche would be dedicated to organisations that are providing support to job seekers and people needing to upskill from different backgrounds and locations around the country. Jobcare, INCO and RCSF provide these vital services that must not only continue amid the pandemic and public health guidelines but must also continue to adapt their services to meet evolving challenges. It’s also very important to us that we continue to support our neighbours in Ringsend and the surrounding areas as they navigate this extremely difficult time.” Paul Mooney, Founder of Jobcare, one of the grantees to receive funding from Google.org said, “We are working tirelessly to support jobseekers, now including those who have unfortunately been economically impacted by COVID-19. It’s crucial that we continue our services during this extraordinarily difficult time, and the Google.org grant will help us expand our reach and adapt our platforms so that we continue to provide vital support.” The first tranche of the €1 million euro funding was shared among NGOs that address different aspects of the crisis in communities across Ireland, including FoodCloud, ALONE, A Lust for Life and the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, in addition to Google’s local community in Ringsend and Pearse Street. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has unveiled an end-to-end hydrogen refuelling solution supporting ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-powered test flight programme in Cranfield. The hydrogen refuelling solution, delivered by EMEC in conjunction with subcontractor Fuel Cell Systems Limited (FCSL), is a mobile solution consisting of a re-deployable modular electrolyser, trailer mounted air compressor and a first of its kind ADR-certified 350 bar refuelling truck. Delivery of the refuelling solution is a key milestone in the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK funded HyFlyer project. EMEC: Hydrogen refuelling system The three-part refuelling system uses the electrolyser for the on-site generation of hydrogen gas which is compressed and stored onboard the refuelling truck. The hydrogen can then be used to fuel an aircraft, in this case fuelling ZeroAvia’s Piper M-Class aircraft. Storing up to 55 kg of hydrogen, the refuelling truck can support multiple daily flights within the HyFlyer test programme. Having successfully gained ADR certification, a specialist test for vehicles carrying hazardous goods in bulk, the refuelling truck can now legally carry hydrogen on the roads, making it the first mobile refuelling solution of its kind available in Europe. The system is currently being used by ZeroAvia at its R&D base at Cranfield Airport where it recently carried out the world’s first hydrogen-electric flight of a commercial scale aircraft. ZeroAvia is now working on the next phase of the aircraft’s technology integration and testing programme using the mobile refuelling solution to support a 250-300 nautical mile A – B demonstration flight, expected to be the longest hydrogen-powered flight on record. Neil Kermode, Managing Director at EMEC, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting ZeroAvia’s test flight programme and developing EMEC’s hydrogen capabilities. Operating as a mobile 350 bar hydrogen refuelling solution, the HyFlyer truck can provide hydrogen fuelling service to locations with no existing or fixed hydrogen infrastructure which is enabling the solution to be used in an airport setting. “We found that there was no standard for hydrogen refuelling in an aviation setting so the mobile solution has been developed in accordance with the automotive J2601 hydrogen refuelling standards while being bespoke to best fit the project needs.” Tom Chicken, Chief Technical Officer at FCSL, said: “Achieving ADR certification, so that the truck can transport hydrogen legally on the roads, is a huge step forward to facilitate hydrogen-fuelled transport and is a first for Europe. We are delighted to have been involved in the HyFlyer project and look forward to continuing to provide our hydrogen refuelling services to the transport sector.” Val Miftakhov, CEO of ZeroAvia said: “ZeroAvia expects to deliver zero emissions hydrogen-electric aviation ready for passengers by 2023. We are continuing to develop and test our Piper M class model, which will be scaled up for larger aircraft and longer distance travel. “As hydrogen-electric aircraft enter service, the hydrogen refuelling solution developed within the HyFlyer project demonstrates the refuelling possibilities which airports and airlines will need to consider, to accelerate their own transition to sustainable flight.” The HyFlyer project is led by ZeroAvia with project partners the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) and Intelligent Energy. Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Leo Varadkar, TD, has announced a total of €8.24 million in grants to 95 enterprise centres throughout the country under Enterprise Ireland’s Enterprise Centres Fund. The funding is considered crucial for the future of the enterprise centre sector in Ireland as hubs around the country implement a recovery plan for businesses within their remit over the next six to 12 months. Varadkar states that funding will help enterprise push towards modernisation Mr. Varadkar said the funding made available through his Department would help enterprise centres all over the country modernise their facilities, protecting the health and safety of people working there and helping to secure jobs. The 95 centres will receive grants ranging in size from €10,000 to €150,000. A major analysis of the sector earlier this year shone a light on the devastating effects Covid-19 has wrought on enterprise centres in every county, with almost 88% of centres reporting a drop in income of between 21% and 80% as many of their entrepreneur tenants struggled to keep their own businesses afloat. Among its stark findings was that while the vast majority of hubs had seen tenants closing their doors temporarily (83.5%), one-third (33%) of centres said some tenants have shuttered their businesses permanently. The chairperson of the National Association of Community Enterprise Centres (NACEC), Gary O’Meara, welcomed today’s funding announcement, saying it was the culmination of months of research and collaboration between NACEC, Enterprise Ireland, the Dept of Enterprise and other key stakeholders from across the public and private sector, and which resulted in the publication of the Enterprise Centres/Hubs Covid-19 National Impact + Recovery Plan by NACEC last August. He added: “Hubs, if managed correctly, have the potential to really drive economic activity and social prosperity throughout our regions and across rural Ireland, and I believe NACEC is now very well placed to help make this new future of work opportunities a reality.” Mr O’Meara added that as traditional workplace dynamics have been overturned by Covid-19 and new social distancing requirements, enterprise hubs and co-working spaces are in an ideal position to provide a new ‘Hub-Home-HQ’ model as companies and their employees embrace new ways of working. Julie Sinnamon, Enterprise Ireland CEO, said: “Over the past 20 years, enterprise centres have provided important infrastructure for entrepreneurs and are an essential part of the start-up ecosystem across Ireland. “The centres, many of which are regionally based, provide space, connectivity, mentoring, and support to start-up founders and teams, helping them to scale nationally.” She added that the funding just announced would ensure that enterprise centres, many of which have been negatively impacted by Covid-19, can sustain their businesses, pivot, and further develop their services to support the next wave of start-up companies. Review of No Safe Harbour: The Inside Truth About Cybercrime, and How to Protect Your Business by Mark Sangster, see more on his website here. Stories of massive data breaches litter the 24-hour news day headlines. A who’s who of banks, retailers, law firms, and healthcare organizations are affected by hackers and cybercrime syndicates. These companies, however, are often those with the most sophisticated technological systems in place, designed to stop crime before it starts. So how and why do cybercriminals continue to breach their ranks? And how can smaller companies with fewer resources at hand protect themselves? The story of digital crime told by cyber security expert Mark Sangster is one that hasn’t been told before: one in which the key to changing the locks isn’t in our computers, but in our corporate culture. Sangster deftly weaves together real-life criminal cases in a thrilling narrative that illustrates the human complexities behind the scenes that can directly result in an open door to threats. Within a security context, deep social engineering is the newest and biggest means of breaching our systems. Sangster shows readers that, in a world where the notion of truth is evaporating, organizations need to shift the security discussion away from technology gates alone toward a focus on leadership, team behaviors, and mutual support. No Safe Harbour: The Inside Truth About Cybercrime, and How to Protect Your Business, reviewed This is a short, punchy, thoughtful and provocative book. Sangster walks you through a series of real world scenarios that are very real, risky and need to be considered. He maps out the challenges in an accessible and understandable way. Forewarned is very much forearmed and the insights are useful, as well as the risks identified being plausible. Mark Sangster tweeted: 83% Of Enterprises Transformed Their Cybersecurity In 2020 via LouisColumbus Forbes #cybersecurity The book covers a range of scenarios, some real, some hypothetical, but all plausible, and well worth considering, and trying to prevent happening to your company. Sangster clearly knows his subject matter, and it is presented in a readable and informative way. The title may be a little depressing, but far better to increase your company security to ensure that it is not trivial for your assets, important documents and hardware are easily accessible or hackable. A useful book to have on your bookshelf. Mark Sangster tweeted: Excited To Announce The Launch Of My Book, 'No Safe Harbor: The Inside Truth About Cybercrime And How to Protect Your Business'!!! Among total respondents, nearly one-third (32%) say AI and machine learning, followed by 5G (20%) and IoT (14%). These challenges include a permanent hybrid remote and office work structure (22%), office and facilities reopenings and return (17%), and managing permanent remote working (13%). However, 11% said the agility to stop and start IT initiatives as this unpredictable environment continues will be their biggest challenge. Another 11% cited online security threats, including those related to remote workers, as the biggest challenge they see in 2021. What’s more, of those who say they are better prepared, 58% strongly agree that COVID-19 accelerated their preparedness. When asked which technologies will have the greatest impact on global COVID-19 recovery, one in four (25%) of those surveyed said AI and machine learning, Cybersecurity The top two concerns for CIOs and CTOs when it comes to the cybersecurity of their organisation are security issues related to the mobile workforce including employees bringing their own devices to work (37%) and ensuring the Internet of Things (IoT) is secure (35%). This is not surprising, since the number of connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, sensors, robots, and drones is increasing dramatically.
